Matt Barnes Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The newest Los Angeles Laker is in some hot legal water, following an arrest on domestic violence charges.

Barnes was booked in Sacramento after a physical confrontation between Barnes and a woman he lives with allegedly took place.

KCRA in Sacramento has the report:

Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies say Los Angeles Lakers player Matt Kelly Barnes was arrested on domestic violence charges. Officials said deputies responded to an incomplete 911 call from a residence located in the 8100 block of Sunset Avenue at 4:16 p.m. Wednesday where they met with 30-year-old Matt Kelly Barnes and a woman who he lived with and had a dating relationship.

Deputies said they determined the two were involved in a physical confrontation during which Barnes prevented the woman from talking to 911 operators. Furthermore, while both parties had visible injuries, Barnes was determined to be the primary aggressor and taken into custody, officials said.

After posting a $50,000 bond and getting released from jail, Barnes went on the offensive, in an attempt to clear his name in the court of public opinion.

He tweeted his side of the story (in all caps) and also sent a text message to News 10:

“U know any domestic violence situation 9 outa 10 times the man gets arrested. That’s the case here I was the victim but still got arrested. No matter what I say people are gonna think what they want…”

The Lakers have yet to comment on the arrest.

“Matt Kelly Barnes”? No wonder he never used his middle name.

  • WangChung

Barnes does have a point about the fuzz overwhelmingly siding with women in domestic violence cases.

  • Overtime

in a lot of ways, this summer hasnt been great for nba players reps

  • Nigel

That’s what happens when you go back home.

Matt Barnes needs to hook up with Kat Stacks.

  • Fat Lever

Stay the f off twitter man after that incident. That ish is for 2 reasons, to get you in trouble or to make you look like a fool.

  • Aaron

Even if this article wasn’t published, I would know it’s true.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

3rd current Laker with a physical abuse charge ob a woman. Fabulous examples of how a man should act. Keep up the great work!

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

Surprise, surprise…but still they’re just charges, let’s let it play out.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Well Barnes, maybe if you made the phone call instead of the woman they would target her instead of you.

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

were the basketball wives cameras there? maybe it was staged for the show. just kidding! that was a very un-feminist thing to say! bad cheryl!!

  • JoeMaMa

Let the courts decide. If this peanut gallery had its way, Lebron would be dead, Kobe in jail, MJ would own at least 14 states, and Charlie V would have a full head of hair. Oh…and Chris Bosh would be banished to a wack reality TV show.

  • http://null.com Reemo

    Boo Eboy

  • The Philosopher

    Better him than me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

    Doesn’t look like the type…

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

@JoeMaMa, who has been wishing Chuck V some hair?

  • http://kb24.com DreXnaW21

so wait Matt Barnes’ girlfriend was the one beating him up? sad :(

  • Jay c

He should have paid her off the way Kobe paid that girl after forcing himself on her

  • ClydeSays

Twitter is a marketing/promo tool Matt, not a defense attorney….

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    The “type” you say?
    Does that work for everything?

  • NicktheQuick

Not a good look for him but he does have a point though. Any altercation btw a man and a woman and both have injuries, the man is usually said to be the aggressor and arrested unless there is overwhelming evidence that the woman started it and or if the man has more serious injuries. I dont condone domestic violence but cops officiate this type thing like FIBA refs.

If it aint rough, it aint right. Oh wait, wrong thread.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

One day I’m going to post a list of Dwyane Wade and LeBron James alleged (key word there…) transgressions so everyone will be able to help Eboy off his high horse. Wives with herpes, mothers on crack, mothers who allegedly sleep with teammates, fathers who aren’t reconized by their kids, business managers who ambush women over jewelry, and on and on. Not exactly Sesame Street material either. So just stick to being proud of your roster and not their upstanding reputations…

  • abaci

I hope this isnt true i have liked barnes since he was with the warriors. But any man who hits a woman is a coward

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So matt barnes wants us to know he got in a physical confrontation with some lady, she beat him up, semi-called the cops, and then blamed the whole thing on him. Is this lady Shaq?

  • unrel

this just proves that the lakers are getting tougher..

  • unrel

@abaci.. not saying this happed in this situation.. but if the woman is pushing and hitting the man.. and the dude grabs her or pushes her off him.. that can catch a domestic violence case also… happened to my neighbor when i was a kid.. couple arguing.. mostly the lady doing all the crazy-talk and physical.. once he did something.. called the cops.. they rolled him up.. 3 strikes law.. family moved out within a month.. whoever said cops deal with it like fiba refs was spot on..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Not in the mood to get into it with you Allen…

  • feez22

Well before i hear all the Barnes protecting that i heard when yall laker fans started protecting kobe during his situation i will put it in perspective. If barnes had done this in ORLANDO yall would be calling him a straight up THUG and wouldn’t even mind the facts or the situation and you know it. What did you laker fans say when artest went in the stands? what did most of you laker fans say when barnes was up in kobe’s grill? you called them THUGS (most of you) and most of you condemned him on the SPOT. yet as soon as he gets to your team you decide to look at the facts? that shows me that yall are indeed BIASED. How about looking at EVERYONE’S situation legal or not and looking at all the facts instead of condemning the players and people in the NBA that are NOT lakers or laker assosciated. lets tell it how it is. if you would call these players thugs out of L.A., call them thugs when they play for the lakers. It may not be fair but at least yall aren’t biased with your opinion. IMO, we need to wait for all the facts with barnes to make an opinion. However i think this with every athlete that gets in trouble including guys like Kobe and most recently guys with PR trouble in lebron and now barnes with no Bias.

  • teebee!!

like mike epps said…”who ever answers the phone first the other person is going to jail…” hahaha, ok thats not funny but still.

  • Robb

this guy is way too volatile

  • feez22

@ Myles Brown This is what you said. “One day I’m going to post a list of Dwyane Wade and LeBron James alleged (key word there…) transgressions so everyone will be able to help Eboy off his high horse”. This is what i will say to that. Dwyane wade and Lebron James have NEVER been arrested for an alleged CRIME. what you bring up are moral and social dillemas. Both of those are nothing when comparing matt barnes’ “alleged” scuffle. Stop with the laker defending. You seriously cannot defend barnes by trying to bring up wade and bron’s LEGAL transgressions thats just foolish. besides, “Wives with herpes, mothers on crack, mothers who allegedly sleep with teammates, fathers who aren’t reconized by their kids, business managers who ambush women over jewelry” really? thats Speculation. wives with herpes? mothers on crack? mothers who sleep with teammates? that has NOTHING to do with lebron and wade unless u think wade gave his wife damn herpes lol. btw, wade and bron’s kids recognize their fathers if you seen the doc on lebron or the fact that wade brings his son to all sorts of events and knows his sons and is trying to get FULL CUSTODY of his sons nullify this point. and ambush women over jewlery? really? the women had a STOLEN 10,000 dollar pendant and was arrested for theft. Lebron wasn’t even there so it has NOTHING to do with him. Its ok if you want to defend barnes. How about not trying to bring other NBA players down to defend him. Clearly bringing lebron and wade into this is foolish as they have never been arrested for allegedly beating on their wives. If u read my other post, i want to see all the facts before i make an opinion on barnes yet you pretty much ignore that and use SPECULATION (false at that) for lebron/wade. the IRONY.

  • http://sdjkflf.com Jukai

Myles: Do you think a zone defense w/o hand checking or a man-on-man w/ hand checking would have been better to prevent Barnes from smacking around this chick?

  • http://www.dontevenreply.com total scrotal implosion

Women can push your limits, but you must remain calm, and just leave

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

The point is that it’s all speculative and many players may not be the role models they’re purpoted to be. We don’t know what truly happened in any of these situations and to use it as ammunition against an opponent is unecessary, especially if your rooting interest have their own chracter issues to sort out. A woman getting beaten should never be something to crow about, no matter who her husband is or plays for. Right? But somehow these things always turn into something for fans to relish in.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Myles: LeBron has never had any type of dealings with law enforcement. Never been arrested or trialed in court. PR incidents, yes. Transgressions, no. I don’t know how his mom smoking crack or his father bailing out can be pinned on him. (I’m suspicious about the Delonte thing because that would have FOR SURE put a strain on their relationship and they’re as tight as ever). For the jewelry case, neither Lebron or Maverick were there at that moment. The woman is also a suspect on the theft case as she alledges to have bought the 10k chain for $5. / All 3 Lakers were arrested (wrongfully or not). That’s a big difference, no?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

No need to “get into it.”
It is what it is, and you wrote what you wrote.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

I would have gone with a box and one. As in go to your room and calm down before you ruin your life and possibly someone elses. No hand checking the ladies please.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

That is not me @ 1:52.

  • JTaylor21

@Myles Brown, when have Wade and Bron being ever charged with a CRIME unlike your laker lovers who are the example of how NOT to treat a woman. Do you have evidence to back up your claim that wade give his x-wife herpers other than what your DUMB A** heard on the news? So now it’s bron’s fault that his mother was “alledgely” on that Apple Jacks and slept with his teammate. Your vision is probably clouded by the bukkake of man juice left on your face by the entire laker squad that you’re not seeing or thinking straight.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

And I wasn’t comparing apples and arrests, just providing examples of “how a man should act” can backfire.

  • JTaylor21

Myles you’re my FAVORITE writer on this GREAT website but you FU*Ked up on that one. You can’t be making ish up without evidence to back you, feel me.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

And once again Jtaylor, can’t construct a decent argument/response without resorting to gay jokes. My friend, you’re either a unabashed homophobe who needs serious help or you’re the textbook definition of a closet case. There are no other options. If there is, please prove me wrong and dead the gay talk.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

And I appreciate the compliment, but again, no need for the homophobia.

  • Mr. Robinson

    What the f*ck is bukkake?!?!

On this episode of Basketball Wives…..

  • Klav

Forreal tho, this is what happens when u try to act hard. it’s one thing to never back down to anyone playing basketball, but when u carry that persona off the court it is bound to make a situation like this worse. if he was an all around nice guy off court but kept it 100 on the court, then I don’t see this being nearly as bad. hard to support a dude in uniform if he can’t suit up. own up Matt, he’s a millionaire he shouldn’t be in this situation.

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

the fued between allen and wayno is more interesting

  • http://aspov.blogspot.com Cheryl

I am not cheryl whoever that is

  • JTaylor21

@Myles, I’ve constructed MANY arguments without having to talk SH*T, my basketball knowledge is impeccable.

i was expecting a joke about barnes flinching in the comment section. no dice.

  • PapaBearATL

Get some money, get some tat’s watch a few music videos, swagger jack some musician now you are an official ‘gangsta’, I put this dude on the same list as JR Smith: Young, Dumb and Rich. These dudes need to pump their brakes, shut up, shut out the bs and just play ball. Also, I would never let any female I’m associated with go around any of the ‘women’ on the Basketball Wives show… ever… can’t even watch the commercial for the show.

following your debate with crawford about zone vs handchecking, youre hilarious for bringing it back up here

  • str8 from samoa

haha barnes is da man! gangsta haha

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Some of yall need to relax like the Ebay, trying to bring up the Lakers trangressions. You should have been a man and put Artest and Kobe name in their. The thing is alot of the suppose role models have done stuff too. I agree with Myles, I have read things about Wade and Lebron and Howard and others, that contradict what they try to put out as individuals. No one is perfect and all have sinned. Some of yall must live in a glass house and never had any stones thrown at yall, but to each their own, but yall taking up for Lebron and Wade DON’T KNOW THEM FOOLS, YALL ARE FANS and if you really knew them might never ROOT for them ever again. Also the Kobe jokes some of yall bring up from the past is getting old, but if trying to be funny is some of yall cats goal so be it. But some PUNKS up here need to MAN UP.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

If you point the proverbial finger at others when you are trying to defend someone elses dumb actions, you must be a moron or an enabler or Seed. Most of you cats are laughable, starting with Myles. Comparing what Myles cited in comparison to female abuse of any sort shows where your heads at and deserves no debate. Thats real.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Ive been there before.. Its pretty much your word against theirs, and the woman always gets the benefit of the doubt.. I had to confess to something I didnt do just to get outta jail, and into classes.. You could drop a dish in a sink and be arrested for d/v..

  • http://www.dontevenreply.com total scrotal implosion

Jukai and david, u dummies. Read the last line of 150. Then go read 1226 and tell me hes not being hypocritical. Anyways, any man who puts his hands on a woman for anything less than being domed with a frying pan is a pu@$y. If you cant take a womans best punch, you are not a man.

  • http://www.dontevenreply.com total scrotal implosion

Boss terry, I know what u mean. A friend of mine got domed with a glass by his girl, it cut his forehead. And she hit him with other items. He didnt touch her. He called 5 0, who promptly arrested him. You probably shouldnt have confessed, but I understand if that was your only way out.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Nobody know what happened or how this started. My personal opinion is that it’s never acceptable to put your hands on a woman out of anger (although sometimes you may want too). However, I hope that the facts are clear and in the end things are dealt with fairly. That’s all I hope for anybody, fair treatment. Being rumored to have done something, being charged with doing something and being convicted are three very different things and I don’t believe comparing ‘stories’ about what somebody was suppose to have done to a conviction is ever appropriate. Kobe was not convicted of rape/sexual assault so I think people need to leave that alone. However if you want to call him an adulterer or something along those lines then thats fair (he admitted it). LBJ/Wade haven’t been charged or convicted of any crimes and most everything else is just speculation. If you want to argue they are taking the ‘easy way out’ or made bad decisions etc, that’s o.k., but not criminal. Let the courts decide what happened with Barnes and base thoughts and considerations on facts. As facts should be the basis of any argument.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

but if we put up trangression by non-laker players you’d be just fine right Seed? So where’s the things you read about wade or lebron? Does it level to what Kobe, Ron and Barnes being charged of? Because if it is then we’d knew them all by now FOR SURE. Because thats a bigger story than our lives combined.. Every person who have done the same sh*t would be convicted in peoples minds. If he’s a non-laker you’d just get along right? Talk about being a man..

  • http://sdjkflf.com Jukai

TSI: HE IS BEING SARCASTIC. God, it’s people like you who force him to never post here anymore.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Stoopid d/v joke- What do U say to a woman with 2 black eyes? Nothing. (you already told her twice).. In all seriousness. It is not a laughing matter. I knew a girl who was beat to death by her boyfriend/pimp.. The law takes it very seriously . There really is no such thing as a “little bit” of domestic violence. In the eyes of the law. I guy who slaps his wife once will be punished the same as a guy whose been doing it for 20 years..

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

If the female threw stuff and punches at Matt Barnes first (who knows what happened), the female will still get the clear and Matt Barnes will be charged even if he was defending himself.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

    I was being sarcastic.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Myles Brown

And call it laughable if you want, but Id bet that most women would rather get punched than get herpes.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Wtf does that have to do with anything? That’s like saying “I bet you most men would rather get kicked in the balls and robbed at gunpoint than to catch malaria.” The fridge? Catching herpes by accident is not a crime–abusing your girlfriend is. Not that any of those is in any way, shape or form desirable.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

52 percent of domestic violence in America is female-on-male. Men just don’t report because of ego function or fear of ridicule for reporting. Just saying.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Been with mylady for 12 years, early in our relationship we got into it and she lost it and landed a slap on me that made my ears ring. I remember just seeing red, and being on the verge of losing it, so i picked up the car keys and walked out. When i got back, she practically begged for my forgiveness. It’s never happened again since. Being african, i got manhandled a lot in my youth and i don’t take kindly to being hit now, i’d rather beat someone to a pulp, but you.just.don’t.hit.women.

Trivia- On what day is domestic violence most common??? ansewer- Super Bowl Sunday… Thats a fact. (I learned it in those stupid meetings)

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

the zone vs man on man reference was brilliant – none hand checking zones is the only defense we should be playing with our lady friends…

  • JTaylor21

@BTerry you know why? Because all those stupid fat f*cks who watch football are drinking while watching football which makes you even dumber. No wonder why football is only popular in the US and the rest of the world could give a rat a**.

  • http://Slamonline.com Cmonpeoples

Jtaylor is a douche. Not my opinion but a fact.

  • Mike from Spain

I want this not to be true, but it looks plausible enough… I hope that the women beating is not contagious, I would hate to see Pau doing that

  • Love4Humanity

This isn’t about LeBron, his mom or Kobe. Kobe’s situation has long been over and done with and all that happened is he cheated on his wife. Let it go. Love him or hate him, it’s over.
