Miami’s Summer Motivated the Celtics’ Front-Office

The Heat signed three of the best players in the L this summer, and the Celtics responded by getting a couple of guys whose best days are well behind them. So, improvement? The C’s seem to think so. CSN reports: “When the final horn sounded in Boston’s Game Seven loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals, Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck immediately began thinking about next season. He saw a need to get more size, to be more physical. And then . . . the Miami Heat reloaded with what might be the most devastating 1-2-3 punch the NBA has seen in years, adding LeBron James and Chris Bosh to perennial all-star Dwyane Wade. ‘We were already going to try and get better, get tougher,’ Grousbeck told CSNNE.com. ‘But then the Miami thing just took it to a new level.’ Since then, Boston has gone from a team that clearly struggled on the boards, to one having arguably the deepest frontcourt in the league which will be led by Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O’Neal, Shaquille O’Neal and Glen Davis …  Although Shaquille O’Neal’s plea to Rivers to be a Celtic via texting and later, a visit to Rivers’ home, was instrumental, Grousbeck has had his eye on landing O’Neal dating back to . . . you got it, the NBA Finals’ loss to the Lakers. After the game, Finals MVP Kobe Bryant talked glowingly about how important it was for him to have one more championship ring than Shaquille O’Neal. ‘The minute I heard Kobe’s remarks about having one more ring than Shaq,’ Grousbeck said, ‘I said to Danny, ‘Go get Shaq!’ . . . and here it is.’”

EVERYONE is motivated by the Heat. Jealousy, envy and fear does that to you.

Click my name! This is what really happened.

Boston has the pieces and talent to still come out and represent the East in the Finals. Avery Bradley and the depth they added up front were some pretty underrated moves.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Didn’t Doc Rivers or Danny Ainge say none of the moves they made this summer were made with the Heat in mind? I might be mistaken.

  • Yesse

“The Heat signed three of the best players in the L this summer.” Word, they got Kobe?

  • http://google c_cantrell

they added much needed depth up front.. man shaq and jermaine on the same team? sounds crazy but anyway boston is the team to beat in the east as of right now.. they have proven themselves tremendously and present one of the biggest challenges to the heat.. size…

  • http://google c_cantrell

three OF the best.. not the three best

  • k

“led by Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O’Neal, Shaquille O’Neal and Glen Davis?” We’re bumping Perk to 3rd string center now?

  • anti-crust

@ c-cantrell, they got shells/shadows of shaq and jermaine….Celtics did improve but they aged as well, while Lakers are maturing like a fine wine. They are set for a four year push,” the Kobe Glory years”. Rondo is your best player and he never gets enogh credit, so when he leaves it’s because of that, and because it will be because all of the current Hall of Famers will be retired and he won’t want to go through that phase such as Kobe endured (Smush and Kwame). Did they drug test Doc Rivers yet for that “starting 5 vs starting 5″ comment? If it wasn’t drugs, beware it’s delusions of grandeur, or Alzheimer’s.

dude will be out most of the season im sure that is why his name was not mentioned earlier

Shaq and Jermaine are not in their prime, but they’re still absolute assets to the Celtics. Last year, Jermaine was good for 14, 7, plus a block and a half while Shaq put up 12, 7, and 1.2. Those are not elite numbers, but they are good numbers, and you can’t deny that their center position alone of Shaq, Jermaine, and later on, Perk will be tremendous defensive presences against the league’s best big men (besides of course KG and Big Baby at the 4). Under the radar yet big moves indeed.

  • http://google c_cantrell

well no jk lol u think i dont know they are past their prime? man lol.. i know the capability of both o’neals and i also know that tho they are both old they will both greatly help the celtics with their size.. celtics are loaded down low this season

  • http://google c_cantrell

huge moves for the celtics especially since size is what killed them in the finals last year

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

I like that it was motivated by Kobe’s comments about Shaq. Kobe brags about beating Shaq, and Rivers says, “Okay, let’s go get Shaq and see if we could shove those comments right back into his mouth.” I like that.

  • JTaylor21

Didn’t DWade drop 35 a game against a celtic team that lost it’s best defender. Then the Heat add a 20/10 guy who can more than hold his own against KG. Last but certainly not least, they add a top 3 player in the league who the Celtics have no one player that can guard him. The celtics are going have their plate full trying to guard all three guys at once.

  • ClydeSays

Meh. The C’s knew they had to beef up the front court after getting killed on the boards last season. I doubt the Heat had much to do with that…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If you’re trying to get better on the boards, getting Jermaine and Shaq is not the correct move.

  • JTaylor21

Do people know that the GREAT JO shot 16 FU*KING percent from the field in playoffs vs the celtics. WOW, it’s even more shameful for a player that plays so close to the basket.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

@AllenP: I can kind of see what you mean, since Shaq and Jermaine’s recent rebounding numbers don’t blow you away, but there’s a certain way to use a guy with Shaq’s size on the boards. he doesn’t have to be grabbing rebounds himself all the time; think of his potential for boxing other big guys out so that KG, Pierce, Big Baby, etc. can get boards. Jermaine can be effective in the same way to a lesser extent.

  • MikeC.

To me, this seemed more a response to getting destroyed on the boards by LA than anything Miami did. If they were responding to Miami, they would have loaded up on swingmen to run at Lebron and Wade, and a RuPaul lookalike for Bosh to cuddle with.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

If Shaq isn’t lazy I’m pretty sure he can snatch a fair share of boards, Allenp.

  • Rusty

@eboy, Does that mean the heats offseason moves were made out of Jealousy, envy and fear of the lakers?

I dont understand what your saying, every team wants to improve and win, it doesnt mean there jealous or whatever, it just means they think they gotta get better. You are just tying to turn this into the Miami heat against the world. I think you should just shut the F up and enjoy watching 3 of the biggest superstar in the game play for your team.

  • MikeC.

@Rusty – I agree with the core of your point, however, I wouldn’t classify Bosh as a superstar. Bosh is either a 3rd rate star who carries a team nowhere, or, Bosh is a superduper-roleplayer who gets in where he fits in to help superstars win rings. Since he had a chance to carry a team and failed to the point where he tucked his tail and left, I think we all know which category he belongs to.

  • Rusty

@MikeC i dont think bosh is a superstar either, it was just easier to type it the way i did. He is a really good player just not on the same level as LBJ,WADE or KOBE.

  • Ali

Just hope the Heat and Celtics live up to all this hype people are creating surrounding their new roster additions. Pressure busts pipes….

  • ab40

yeah you guys are forgetting kendrick perkins, luke harangody and semih erdin. the last one got no love on the celtics site by the way even after making the game winning block over the spaniards. way to go celtics marketing team

  • dsleepy

cosign rusty @10:11. don’t get me wrong, if 3 of the best in the League all signed with MY team all at once and received so much controversy/hate for it, i would also prob be waiting for my team to raise a banner and a big middle finger to the rest of the world in june…but to act like the world now revolves around miami is just arrogant and stupid. kind of like lebron believing the world revolves around him. i’d hate to see his new team’s fans taking on his personality.

  • http://thosefishtacosarethetits.blogspot.com Boston_Blogg3r

This article said more about reloading after losing to the Lakers than keeping pace with the Heat.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

HAHAHAHA, I’m sorry Teddy… When has Shaq been aggressive on the boards again? The Celtics are making a carnal mistake, similar to the mistake the Cavs made every year; by putting all your efforts into preparing to face ONE team the entire year. In the C’s case, the Lakers. The Celtics are gonna meet another team other than the Lakers (Heat probably)… and lose.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    16%? wow lol thats horrible!

  • eddieo

Any team that can’t bang out a +20 against Miami at the C plus PG spots is going to lose because Miami is going to have at least that at the 2,3, and 4. Good move for the Celts because Perkins – when healthy – is a 10 point 8 rebound dog. If Shaq can stand 5 feet away from the basket against Miami and dunk all game long then the Celts might have a shot. The Lakers will beat either of them though.

  • eddieo

Oh, and both teams are being rebuilt out of fear and jealously of the Lakers.

Boston from getting killed on the boards, and Miami because LaQueen James knew that joining with Wade and Bosh was the only way his choking asz was going to see a ring in the next 5 years. Doing it with a normal, best record in the league type team wasn’t going to work because he doesn’t deliver in the playoffs because his game can be schemed against. But if Wade gets enough falling and flopping calls from Bennet Salvatore maybe they can do it after Kobe retires.
