Ron Artest to Sell His Championship Ring

No one was happier than Ron to win a ring this summer, and now, he’s about to sell it for the greater good. Word. NBA.com reports: “Artest is telling others to get help. Yeah, he knows. He knows he’s asking for it. He knows every Internet comedian will jump on this with some crack, mostly behind the anonymity of a screen-name handle, of course. But he doesn’t care because shining a light on an urgent topic is more important to him. Here’s how more important: Artest finally won a title in June after 11 regular seasons of trying … and now he’s planning to sell the championship ring as a fundraiser to put more psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists in schools. ‘I’m never going to put it on,’ he said. Artest plans to soon announce details of what he hopes will become a worldwide auction, and he takes possession of the jewelry in an Oct. 26 pre-game ceremony before the Lakers open against the Rockets. It’s an incredible gesture. But it’s even more meaningful as a statement. ‘You work so hard to get a ring, and now you have a chance to help more people than just yourself, instead of just satisfying yourself,’ he said. ‘What’s better than that? For me, this is very important.’”

    You gotta keep your ring

  • Hussman25

Ron-Ron is a standup guy! I really commend him for doing this… He said he’ll never put it on. He can always buy another (replica) to have @ home. Mental Health is a real issue which needs to be addressed and if Ron can bring awareness to it… Im all for it! Kudos 2 Mr. Artest!

Ron Ron can sell all the rings he wants as long as he helps mamba get his 6th

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I agree with chazz michael michaels, if he feels so strongly about it why don’t he dig into his own pockets?

  • JTaylor21

@Jukai, you don’t make enough money working at the front door of wal-mart to buy the ring.

Classic Artest – doing something crazy and commendable in one move.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave.

Two points to Earl. Haw haw haw,

Love Artest! He is a good person. Plus, you never know what he will do next.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I could make a joke about how this is only about 10 years ahead of schedule, but since I really do like Ron, I’ll just say it’s cool that he’s willing to make this sacrifice.

    Shaq on line 1…

  • http://Slamonline.com NBA kid

@enigmatic, it’s not about the dollar amount, it’s the publicity that selling his ring for something would generate more than any sum of cash would

  • J

I think this is great. To Ron Ron, knowing that he’s helping people is more important than a ring that proves something everyone already knows.

  • http://psp2423@yahoo.com eboyhater

ill give 5 bucks for it and sell it to lebron for more

  • http://www.sonicbids.com Doyouwantmore

    @NBA Kid – fair enough.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Nice gesture, he played for a championship and not the ring. Some players just put the ring on a mantel or in a case somewhere and don’t really do anything with it anyway. It’s nice that the ring is actually going to help a cause. There will likely be more media exposure for the cause/shcools by him putting the ring up for auction than if he just donated more money to them.

  • logues

dude is a millionaire, just donate the money

  • Rusty

Very selfless of him but dammmm im sure there will be days when he regrets selling it. I mean given his fame and status im sure there is lots of ways he could raise some money, perhaps its more about the publicity.

I saved up to buy a star-spangled Tracy McGrady Blue Road Uni In 2001. I got it and went to visit my family in Dom. Rep. That summer. My favorite cousin and everyone else on the Island was complementing me on how good the jersey looked and and how he wished he could afford one. I decided to myself that since my cuz lived in less than fortunite circumstances, I was gonna leave him the Jersey right before I left home.
    ^
the look on his face was priceless and felt real good that I could make his day ( He still has it and treasures it till this day) but i think about it now and really wished I had just kept it in my closet cause I never got another one

Cosign Logues, I was about to say the same thing, he can donate money, why give up the ring. I think Ron is trying to do to much now. Just give them money and keep your ring. I thought he was giving it to his Dad or wife during the interviews after the Lakers win.

  • burnt_chicken

If Ron were to give TWICE as much money from his own pocket, it would generate ONE TENTH of the awareness (if that) as/of him giving up his ring.
    Wow, RonRon! Remarkable!

  • Rusty

cosign burnt chicken, is definatley a smart move as far as raising awareness.

  • bill breedley

and the highest bidder is….. Lebron James. The queen will finally get a ring!!!!

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

I think Myles might be right about taylor21.

  • 4thqtrHero

Serious note: Would we seriously be talking about this if Ron-Ron just donated the money?

Funny Note: That would go to Earl, nothing is going to beat that.

Serious note: When we all sit around and call Ron-Ron crazy it’s kind of true but then you go out onto the street and you see people who really can’t function in society and that’s pretty sad.

Hope: Whoever buys the ring should hand it back to Ron-ron. That’d be the classy thing to do.

  • http://Slamonline.com NBA kid

After this, I’m really happy for Ron I don’t think anyone should ever criticize or question someone for helping others.

  • Nashty

Or he should give the ring to the kid he punched back in Detroit…..

  • http://www.google.com The Big Fundamental

Dw, he should be able to get another one this season!

  • http://www.google.com The Seed

i’d do anything to get a hold of that ring ;)

  • Ronald

Good work Ron Ron. He should also do a charity event thing. To go along with it.

  • rikson

Kudos to Mr. Artest, thats agreat idea…

  • dsleepy21

Wow so much props to Ron. He worked and dreamed so long to get this ring, and then gives it up just like that to generate awareness to help others. It shows he’s invested not just the money, but a part of his own life. He may not have a perfect track record, but I have so much respect for Ron Artest. Man this dude is real. I never thought I would say this, but Ron Artest is inspiring me to be a better person.

  • Sturm Drang

……Ron, you are still a crazy, crazy man. On the other hand, I sure would love to see you do a charity boxing match against Tom Cruise, with the winner getting to donate the money either to psychologists/psychiatrists (Ron wins!) or to those EVIL anti-psych Scientologists (Tom Cruise will believe he can win! He’s supposed be ‘clear’ and have superpowers by now because he’s spent a bazillion on audits and whatnot!).

  • permaculture james

Props to Ron Ron. The championship is in the accomplishment and not the ring. Schindler’s List: remember how he said, I coulda sold this ring and saved how many? It’s sale value is at its highest. I hope Tom Cruise buys it.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

NOT ME: Somebody likes the name TOO!!!

i’d do anything to get a hold of that ring

  • tavoris

I’m starting to believe the Artest is a lot more sane than a lot of posters up here. They just don’t get his motivation.

  • xplor

I thought artest cut his paycheck on the Lakers to win a ring and now he wants to sell it. Maybe Malone can buy it or even lebron.

  • mike

omg i want it! what estimated price it will go for? seeing as though the game was fixed i recon ther should be a discount!

  • http://kanedaddyshirts.com Patrick

“Maybe Lebron Could buy it!!” Awesome

  • Kenton

He is also donating half of his salary as well.

  • Richon

I think Ron needs help. I don’t know who pitched this idea to him. Maybe he was on dope or something. Whoever gave him this idea to him should be fired.

  • Richon

    Crazy ass
