Suns Extend Alvin Gentry’s Contract

Phoenix has given Gentry the vote of confidence. The AZ Republic reports: “When Suns President Lon Babby hired Lance Blanks to be his general manager this summer, he said Blanks would be on board for as long as he was. Now the same can be said for Alvin Gentry. The coach that the new Suns front office inherited now has its hearty endorsement. Gentry signed a one-year contract extension that puts him and Babby under contract for the next three years. The Suns picked up an option on Gentry in June that guaranteed half of his salary for 2011-12, with the rest subject to a lockout season. That move followed the departure of then-GM Steve Kerr, who asked Managing Partner Robert Sarver to pick up Gentry’s option and add a contract year.”

Nice. I like Alvin. He does tend to say “O-Kayh?” a lot though, whenever they show him talking in the huddle. It’s kinda like Mr. Garrison from South Park. But yeah, I like his ability to get the guys to commit to D, without giving up offense completely.

This is going to be quite an imperative move – Alvin Gentry has proven to be a better teacher for younger players than I had originally expected. One of those coaches that really looks good with self-motivated types but shows his hand with young guys that need to learn more about the NBA game (I think thats where D’Antoni is at). Mr Alvin Gentry was a pleasant surprise for the Suns and I think is a great fit for a “Phoenix-style” basketball program. So many times you would see him with Dragic and be telling him to enjoy playing and not stress, let it come to you etc… It’s certainly working for the Slovenian. It’s going to be a fulltime job for Alvin to sort out what to do with this new-look team (can you believe they’ve actually gotten EVEN smaller?!) and remain around the top of the West as other teams get better (OKC, Portland, New Orleans?)
