Technical Fouls Rules ‘Expanded’

ESPN brings us the bad news that we can expect to see more techs called starting next season (a joy the recently-retired Rasheed Wallace will sadly not be able to experience): “Referees have been instructed to call a technical for: • Players making aggressive gestures, such as air punches, anywhere on the court. • Demonstrative disagreement, such as when a player incredulously raises his hands, or smacks his own arm to demonstrate how he was fouled. • Running directly at an official to complain about a call. • Excessive inquiries about a call, even in a civilized tone. In addition, referees have been instructed to consider calling technicals on players who use body language to question or demonstrate displeasure, or say things like, ‘Come on!’ They can also consider technicals for players who ‘take the long path to the official’, walking across the court to make their case. Ron Johnson, the NBA’s senior vice president of referee operations, said audience research was a major factor behind the change.”

This is great and will definitely make the game both more enjoyable and faster paced.

These sound like the Kobe Bryant rules. I’ll believe it when I see it. To be real…EVERY guy in the league thinks they can get away with that crybaby sh*t. There’s no damn way they’re going to curtail in one season…there’s going to be a sh*tload of techs this year.

  • Nick the Quick

I don’t know how long Sasha Vujacic will last in a game if they apply these rules. Dude has never fouled anyone in his life. Ever.

  • Nick the Quick

Also, is shouting, “Ball don’t lie!” after a missed free throw on a questionable foul still legal?

  • Ronald

Did anyone actually read the rules? They are borderline retarded. You aren’t even allowed to “gesture”, I think the league thinks they have robots as players. And, I love how they say this is what the fans want. I think we want less travelling, palming and star-calls, not less emotion.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

this is ridiculous… theyre tryna turn the NBA into a church league

  • http://www.bluefont.com Hisham

this is bullsh*t. i know players overreact but you can’t expect them to cease all emotional reactions in the heat of the moment. If these reactions are limited to a single cry of come on or a disillusioned gesture then no tech should be called

  • LeoneL

Eff Ron Johnson and these rules. I like my basketball with air punches thrown in liberally.

  • http://google c_cantrell

so they cant even throw some air punches huh? gay

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I wonder if a fist pump, ala MJ, is allowable after a big play?

  • Brian

If the refs enforced the rules consistently then the majority of this stuff would go away. You don’t see this stuff in FIBA because they bite the bullet and allow physical play.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

this is stupid sh1t, you cant take the emotion of the game

  • http://SLAMonline.com GotHandles?

retarded. half the calls or bullsh!t too. its no wonder players get pissed.

  • arjae828

“…And, I love how they say this is what the fans want. I think we want less traveling, palming and star-calls, not less emotion…”

took the words right out of my mouth. didn’t they try this a few years back? everyone hated it, commentators included. D.Stern on another power trip (this guy’s getting ridiculous). I don’t think it’ll last a full season. Everyone will revolt.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

this is so, SO very wack. Wow, I see the NBA has been taking cues from the wack NFL on how to treat players.
We can thank Mike Breen and his ilk for this.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I’m sorry, but they cry in FIBA all the damn time. All they do is whine, it’s crazy. I watched the world championships and they whined about obvious fouls they made on PURPOSE!
    Perception is a motha.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

At this pace the players will be playing with those Pulp Fiction style gimp-gag-ball-masks by the playoffs… The way he is going about things, one is lead to think that Stern must have been teased into a corner at every recess, gym class or coffee break for his whole life.

  • pk

    thank god that sheed retired

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

So wait, if you make a game winning shot and throw an air punch ala T-Mac (13 in 35 video), you get a technical? Annnd the other team can then tie the game up with a FT?
And you can’t just make a ‘judgement call’ on that. It either is, or it isn’t a technical foul.
Also, does this mean the tech foul ‘allowance’ will get raised to, let’s say, 50 per season?

  • MikeC.

This is horsesh!t. There is one point that I’d agree with. The ‘running towards the ref’ part. No matter who it is that’s running at the ref, I’m always 95% sure that it’s going to end in a flying drop-kick. Does this mean that Tim Duncan is going to get T’d up when he clasps his hands on top of his head and bulges his eyes out after he fouls someone? That dude is, literally, the exact type of robot that Stern wants every player to turn into. The only glitch in his programming is the eye bulge.

  • hammer

This is flat-out ridiculous! U can’t even give a solid foul these days w/out it being misconstrude as a f****n flagarant. Its pathetic! There killing the emotion from the game w/this bs. Air punches!? R u kidding me!? They went that far on this? D-ZAM!

  • http://gmail dirty frank

    What a F*%KING JOKE!

  • Will

When I first read about this, I just saw that excessive arguing was going to be outlawed which I was down with. This other ish about punching the air and raising of the hands is sheer ridiculousness. Higher ups and refs are not going to take away ‘emotion’, I hate to tell them. All this is going to lead to is an abundance of tech calls, more free throws, a slowing down of the game and disgust from fans. I hate constant whining and the like from players but some of these rules seem to be taking it too far.

  • Wut

Tim Duncan is literally a robot? They should get his knee bearings rerolled.

  • k

This is absurd. I don’t know who they contracted this “audience research” to, but it’s probably the same firm that told them what a great idea that new synthetic game ball was going to be in 2006.

  • K-Nas

Furthermore, after committing a foul, a player is required to immediately apologize to his opponent, then leave the game for no fewer than five minutes to think about what he has done.

  • JTaylor21

@bryan, that’s why FIBA sucks and shouldn’t be mentioned in the same sentence with the NBA. NBA>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Feeble Basketball.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

using a shotgun to kill a fly. sure, take all the emotion out of the games.

  • k

The NBA: I dispassionately accept this game.

  • Brian

Let me guess JT21 and Allenp, you’ve watched every FIBA officiated game since 1971 on YouTube?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Micheal Jordan in 2010-2011 would get T’d up for “The Shrug”…SMH

  • Sam

This is a bad idea basketball is an emotional sport. They say this is going to speed up the game? its going to slow it down to have to take a technical free throw every other possession. I really hope this doesnt effect the outcome of games!

  • Ronald

Bah, whining isn’t a sole trait of the NBA. There is whining in EVERY level. Except maybe pee-wee level? It’s part of the game and competitiveness of players. So are missed calls.

  • larrylegend

oh man, how i love fiba basketball….

  • http://screwjams.tumblr.com cramzy

there will be a few dozen incredibly dumb techs handed out that will affect games and they’ll adjust the rules again. Just watch

You guys know any good fishing spots for the 2011-2012 “season”?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

^ Kenai River in Soldotna, Alaska! Awesome salmon fishing! Might even see The Mailman too, since Malone has a house up there.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Nice! Me, Boozer, Mailman, and Palin will be the Fantastic Four of fly fishing.

They’re gunning for you Kobe! lol

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Allenp is right, again. Mike breen acts like a riot is going to breakout when a player disagrees with a call. Hes always ‘uh oh, so and so better be careful, hes about to go off, etc’. I HATE mike breen. Jvg needs to take more shots at him. These rules are insane. U cant put ur arms up? U cant say come on? I dont like the over demonstrative stuff, lebron! Running at refs isnt cool, but all this is going waaaaay too far. ……. And we should organize a slam fishing trip to alaska with enigmatic as our tour guide for when next season is supposed to happen.

  • Heals

Great, what other NATURAL, SPONTANEOUS things should be removed from the game… how bout’ no more no-look passes cause it shows up a defender, oh and don’t slam the ball too hard it could be intimidating.

What a joke so many issues with The L and BS like this is what the suits decide to crackdown on…

  • barnabusb

The league needs to get back to letting players dunk on someone, grab their nuts, and then taunt in their face. The way basketball was meant to be played.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Wow, no pleading, sarcastic clapping, wave offs, jumping around in a circle nothing. Apparently also no human beings on Nba courts this season, just androids pretending to be them. Has Stu or any of his cronies in the league rules&suppression of emotion department ever played a high octane sport? Serena threatened to make a lineswoman eat her racket at the US Open for chrissakes!! I hate a lot of the pleading that many the players do, but this new punishment is just too much. Why not bring back the papercut synthetic ball while you’re at it, Darth Stern?

  • NBA expert

This Is Gay As F*ck , That’s apart of basketball deal with it , Nba Players are not Robots

  • KING

The NBA is now officially the WNBA

  • http://big11mel@yahoo.com Big Mel

Nah they actually let them play in the WNBA
