Will the Miami Heat Lure Erick Dampier?

According to the Miami Herald, there’s mutual interest between the two parties: “Sure, the Heat has about 28 feet of bodies committed to the center spot in the likes of 7-3 Zydrunas Ilgauskas, 6-9 Joel Anthony, 6-11 Jamaal Magloire and 6-10 Dexter Pittman. Each has either unique size or gifts. None is close to being the complete package that would make him the clear-cut anchor at the position. And that’s why Monday is the start of an intriguing period for the Heat. With training camp looming in a matter of days, there could soon be one big man on the market who has enough intangibles to garner a high level of Heat interest. Monday essentially opens the official bidding for the services of Erick Dampier. Today marks the end of the 60-day period from which Dampier was dealt by Dallas to Charlotte, which can now trade the veteran center and his gold-mine of a $13 million, non-guaranteed contract. Dampier is highly likely to be released by any team that trades for him, meaning he’d end up a free-agent available at a drastically reduced price. Here’s where the Heat comes in, depending on how drastic a reduction Dampier is willing to accept. Despite four bodies at center, the Heat still has questions at the position. Unfortunately, Riley only has the veteran’s minimum of $1.3 million to offer – and Dampier already reportedly has turned down more than that in some preliminary discussions on a new deal with Charlotte. But this is Miami. And there’s known to be mutual interest. In fact, Dampier has already told at least one long-time associate in his Jackson, Miss. hometown that Miami would be at the top of his list if he’s released. Dampier’s camp also indicated that to the Bobcats, who are convinced he’s likely headed for Miami if Charlotte can’t find a trade partner.”

I think he would be serviceable as a starter, with Z and Anthony getting the rest of the minutes. Big Cat would have to go. I don’t think he would take the minimum though, so I don’t think this happens, but if he did he would make the starting center spot no longer a question to the clowns that think that will be this teams downfall.

If we add Dampier, the match up with the Celtics (as if it’s not already) will be one for the ages (and the aged!)

  • apeman

Since when does anyone want eric dampier??!

  • JTaylor21

@EBoy, why do clowns think that the center position will be the heat downfall. Teams have won the chip before without great centers and this team will be no different. Also there’s only ONE great offensive center (Yao) in the league, DHow doesn’t count. As long as bron/wade/chalmers continue to play great perimeter defense, they will be fine.

  • Jose

They see the Frontcourt weak bcuz well it isn’t as superb as others around the L and ppl are looking for any slight deficiency we have so we dont look unbeatable maybe?

  • Byebye

If e dam comes to the heat with all those hard fouls the paint will be secure. Don’t forget Labron or dwade hardly get beat off the dribble so all he will be doing is protecting the paint. The heat are gonna be so fast it’s SCARY when they run on people I can’t wait til the first preseason gm against the pistons I’ll be there in my custom Labron wade jersey

  • Love4Humanity

They need someone because they can’t play with the Lakers. Lakers are too tall and too skilled for them. Magloire is old and slow, same with Ilgauskas, Juwan Howard is too small, Joel Anthony is their best big man.

Wow. If they add Dampier (which I feel like they will), then… I don’t know what to say… that’s AMAZING!

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Though i agree he will be a very servicable starter for the Heat, i still don’t like him. I dont know why.. Maybe because i still clearly remember him saying he’s the 2nd best center next to Shaq years ago, and that he’s once called Erika by Dirk for being soft..

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Dirk has never called him Erika. That was Shaq.
Dirk would have no room to ever call another human being soft. Ever. And I love the big German, but he doens’t have that kind of cache. Besides, he would never do that because he’s not that kind of cat.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

^really? Cant remember clearly.. anyways my bad,

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Yep, it was Shaq who labeled him that, and as a bigtime Dirk & Mavs fan, i wholeheartedly support this insult. Damp always teases with his talent.. about 10x per season. That’s it. When he was vying for that big contract in his last season with G-State, he played so well that multiple teams wanted his services, and that was after a serious knee injury even. Alas, no joy after that.

dampier would be a great fit for this team considering anything else that might be available.. he would take over the starting position for sure and big z and the boys would be good for bout 15 mins a night.. this would be pretty big for the heat

I can hear the sewing machines stitching the Dampier on the Heat jersey now!

    Damp queer is MY MAN!!!

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Aww man we couldnt get a deal done. Happy trails Erica! I find it funny that the same people the slayed you for being a lazy piece of sh!t that ‘cant compare to their Shaqdieselbaby’ are now calling you ‘serviceable’ and a potential starter but times have changed!

who cares, another stiff,at center and heat fans are excited!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!THATS FUNNY,AND NOW STARTING AT CENTER Kareem bill russell dampier!!!!

  • http://www.manutd.com t-money

betcats: its about context. dampier has stone hands and no post moves but that won’t be exposed in miami. he is however a very good post defender and rebounder (his stats per min are excellent). that’s exactly what miami wants. / kinda like how LO was a disaster as a 1st option for the clips but a vital cog for the lakers. (not implying that LO and Damp are as good or important)

  • Byebye

He better than 90 % of the centers n the league not named bogut Howard Bynum kaman timmy if he playin center who else is a great center the heat shud Worry about Perkins hoooow oden yeah right kwame brown not in this lifetime hawks centers yeah right but keep in mind they gotta play the heat on defense the aren’t playing just defense the whole game and no offense what team in this league can match up with bron a dwade tell me no team

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

If you think Dampier is just a “stiff” then you don’t know basketball.
Dude rebounds and he defends quite well in the post. He regularly gives Duncan and other back to the basket players problems. They get him to pair with Haslem, Anthongy, Z and Bosh and they are set in the paint.
You could see an end of the game lineup of Bron, Wade, Miller, Bosh and Damp for bigger teams, and a lineup of Bron, Miller, Bosh, Wade and Haslem for smaller lineups.
Either way, those lineups only have one weak defensive player in Miller, and he’s a “smart” defender. With Damp, Bosh doesn’t have to guard the best big on the other team if that big is ridiculously bigger than Haslem.

  • Byebye

But you guys get the issue what team can stop both dwade and bron in the same game plus miller shot 50% from three last year and e house shot almost 40%

  • Byebye

I’m not gettin pain to put commas and periods lol

  • ilyasova

if dampier puts a ring on his finger, i’ll kill myself.

  • Bdub

Agreed Allen P. He is servicable. Especially in Half Court.

  • http://yahoo ddub

ALLENP. he is a stiif.Dallas paid all that money aand let STEVE NASH GO!!! IF you let NASH go and pay that kind of money, you want a hell of alot more from Dampier,If Cuban could do it over Dampier wouldnt get half of that,But I guess loser will pay a stiff LIKE HIM 50MILLION FOR 6PTS 7REBS and post def,Please child.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Do they even need to pay him at this point? Just set a hot pie on the windowsill and that should be enough to lure Erica.

  • Ronald

    @Byebye: Stay in School.

  • Joey E.

Damp sucks, I’d rather play small ball

  • Ali

Best days are waaaaaay behind him…a 6’11-7footer who has averaged a double double maybe once or twice in damn near 15 years. C’mon Son!
