Allen Iverson Headed to Turkey? (UPDATE)

by Ryne Nelson

After several months of waiting for a starting gig in the NBA, it appears there’s no market for Allen Iverson in America.

According to Basket Magazine, Turkey might very well be Iverson’s next stop — Besiktas Cola Turka has reportedly made Iverson an offer. The rough translation from The Hoops Market reads, “[The two sides] could be now negotiating the last details of the contract.”

Some reports say the economic terms have already been agreed upon ($1.5-2 million, including large bonuses and a percentage of advertising revenues), and a contract is just undergoing “minor” polishing (AI wants a luxury car, a villa, and to be payed every week, instead of every month).

One of the most dominant players of a generation may soon be taking his talents to the Turkish Basketball League. It’s a changing basketball world, indeed.

UPDATE: According to Woj, there’s a slight snag: “So far, Turkey’s Besiktas hasn’t agreed to Allen Iverson contract request that team can’t fine him beyond 1% of salary”

We’ll keep an eye on this over the course of Football Day for you.

First wow if he decides to go I wish him all the best. Gonna miss seeing him play though.

  • tavoris

substitute “Turkey” for “China”, and this is the exact same story we heard before.

  • 6marjons

I guess that ring was never meant to be for Ivey

  • http://aol.com RJ

This is possibly one of the saddest things I’ve ever read

  • Still ballin

China was offering him 5 million in one season..I guess he wants to play in a better league..good luck ai…

  • blk_majic

Which is why i find it hard to believe, if he cant chase a ring here why not just take the extra cash. He’d be way bigger in china too if it was a similar contract with a % of marketing revenue generated coming his way

  • The Philosopher

At least he’s still making a living.

  • Darius

2015 me & AI will win a NBA title

  • ai come back

i stil thin hes gotta shot……….

cosign rj. see that you egotistical players of today? learn to accept lesser roles as you age. still gonna miss iverson though, he was a great.

  • hammer

Some1 put a stop 2 this. This is sad and a travesty. The L is gonna let a legend, that can still help out a team,go overseas? Stop blackballing AI and sign him already!

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

I hope he f’ing tears up the Euros. Oh man, that will make me so happy.

  • LD

He’s not living pay check-to-pay check is he? Why does he need to be payed every week?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

@tavoris – True that. Iverson’s just keeping his name in the news hoping the Heat will come a callin’.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    cosign Jukai.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

These could truly be an attempt to get signed by an NBA team, very very sad to see this happened though if its true…. AI in Turkey!? wow.. This is whats making me think hes being black balled.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Iverson may as well start smoking, seeing how much stream smoke he’s going to be sucking in those smoke-filled arenas in Turkey.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

It’s Thanksgiving up here in Canada. Are we sure AI isn’t going to eat turkey?

  • james

    JUST RETIRE! DAMN.

  • kev

this sum bs. somebody need to pick my man ai up all the bum ass teams n the league sixers clippers cavs somebody jesus this is rediculous. i guess mo williams better than ai smdh

  • http://sdjfklf.com Jukai

The Iverson black balled rumor is dumb. His “My daughter is ill gotta go to a party” move in Phili killed his career.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

First Iverson quit on Detroit, then caused trouble in Memphis and got released, and finally he screwed up in Philadelphia and got released. That looks like three strikes to me. Right now, AI probably couldn’t even get his ol’ Coach John Thompson to vouch for him again. Bottom line, Allen Iverson is persona non grata and a pariah amongst NBA GM’s, Presidents, and Owners. Don’t cry though, it’s not like he’s poor like Antoine Walker. Iverson is clearly doing this for the love of the game. Hey, sometimes you need to lose yourself to find yourself. Maybe AI finds the Answer in Turkey.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Great, now we’ll all be treated to a bunch of stupid “Where is Anna? Last I heard she was in…Turkey?” comments from that annoying greek dude.

  • Atrain

The memories are all we have. Star and AI reppin the 90s but money management leave them in otherworldy places

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’d rather see him go to China. Large fan base there, and he can ball against Steph. No media h@tred for him in China either–the crowd will really like him.

  • shu

    NOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Nick the Quick

@ Enigmatic..this would have been a lot nicer if AI signed with a Greek team and tore up the league there. Greek dude would burst a coronary. AI killing his beloved Hellas, no way! YES WAY!

  • JTaylor21

It’s really going to be a sad sad day when AI puts it up for reals. Like it says in the 2k11 MJ intro: He made himself into a LEGEND.

  • Madex

i heard on sports radio the other day that iverson is in critical financial trouble, so the fact that he wants to be paid every week makes since to me now……that iverson really is in financial trouble is sad as hell..!!

  • Madex

yeah..i heard on sports radio the other day that iverson is in “critical financial trouble” …becuz he is always gambleing with all his money, to the point where he is almost bankrupt, so now the fact that he wants to get paid every week makes since to me now, pretty damn sad….

  • Madex

    sorry for the double post!!!!

  • JTaylor21

^DAMN, ain’t that a bit*h! I don’t understand how people can blow hundreds of millions of dollars so fast. I mean 2-3 luxury cars and 1 mansion max is all you need not 6-7 cars and 3 houses that someone of these athletes be having, not to mention all the leeches that pop up looking for a handout. Save and invest your money instead of buying useless BS like diamond chains and shinning rims.

  • feez22

the “iverson is broke” story is pure speculation. Iverson even though he gambles a bit has a manager whom has known him since he was a child. there is no way in hell gary moore would allow iverson to go bankrupt. there is just no way. you never know. iverson may want to get paid weekly bc euro teams sometimes like to stall on payments/not pay at all. at least he will be ahead of the curve in that aspect. again, iverson may be stupid but his manager sure isn’t. i highly doubt that he is almost bankrupt just speculation. On another note imo iverson going to turkey may not be great for some basketball fans here but it is huge for the game of basketball. ya iverson isn’t that #1 guy anymore but hey turkey now has the chance to see the toughest little guy to ever play the game all the time. this will grow basketball down there a bit. im sure he has a lot of fans down there that don’t give a hell about what has recently happened in his life. they want to see him play so let them. good luck iverson.

  • ai83

So he’s definitely going to Turkey or you think is to call the attention of NBA teams?
Allen can still play at a high level in the NBA, scoring 16-18 with no problems, do not understand how teams like Knicks, Cavs, Raptors will not sign him.
Perhaps this decision to play in Turkey will open the way for him to then come to the NBA again.
    Allen you are the best#3

  • stayweird38

this is weak cuss AI can still play. AI TO THE KNICKS or ORLANDOOOO

1)One more jewel for the crowN of the prince of unintentional comedy in this site (“jukai tavoris”):
“I hope he f’ing tears up the Euros. Oh man, that will make me so happy.”…..do i have to mention that Besiktas doesn’t even paricipate in the EUROLEAGUE..??!!! i will repeat: BESICTAS IS NOT A EUROLEAGUE TEAM!!!!!!
Dream on my little one !!!!and keep posting!!!(of course we talking about the same kid that was thinking last year that Anna can average 30 points in the euroleague….one word: brain surgery.)
Besiktas is TRYING to qualify for the second tier european league we have here. It is not even top-50 club in Europe which is fitting, just imagine a serious team like Barcelona adding a guy like him, they would have lost to the Lakers by 30 points…imagine Anna being part of a passing sequence like the video SLAM posted….hard eh?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Update… Iverson’s request is- team cant fine him more than 1% of salary.. I love AI just as much as the next guy, but is he planning to smoke weed and get into racial fights in Turkish bowling allys??

Anna is desperatelly trying to sign whatever kind of contract in whatever league for whatever team (he was REJECTED from CHINA,sorrry) just to make some extra dollars. This is what happens when you got no humility and respect: you spend all your money in changing everyday bentleys and then you move around the world begging for some $$$. Of course what respect&humility ot excpect from somebody that didn’t respected at all even the game that gave him everything… It is not hate when i said few years ago that this guy will end up broke somE day, it is called REALISM. Write this down, it is a general truth my little ones: A fool and his money are soon to be seperated. sorry.

@Bossterry……:the smoking thing is definitelly a good reason for him to choose Turkey. In China (even if they hadn’t rejected him) he would have much more problems to enjoy his favorite of-court activities….

I love the “every week payment” demand!!!! His agents know their client better and they think : “get as much as we can before this ‘genious’ do his ‘thing’ again and be sent back home packing”.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Dear Antonis- please shut the eff up, your an idiot, I usually dont disrespect Slam posters, but for you, I make an exception… Im betting AI will never again play organized basketball… Its sad because he was so fun to watch, he had the heart of a champion.. Things didnt work out in Detroit, Memphis threw him a bone, he didnt like it there.. Philly picked him up and gave him every oppertunity to shine (again). IMO once again the true diva came out in him, and they parted ways.. I dont think any team is willing to put up with him anymore, he J.R. Rider/Spreewell ed his way outta the league.. I Wish him the best.. Thanx for the memories…

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@ Antonis- No disrespect, but it seems alot of time your posts dont make any sense…. Keep watching the En’ Bee’ Aye’… God bless you..

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

^ and I take back the idiot comment…. Im sure your a smart guy that means well…. Again, no disrespect..

  • Ben Flook

@ Greek guy, if you bumped into Iverson in the street you would do 1 of two things, crowd him and act like his number 1 fan, or turn and walk the other way. All this stuff you say on here is just tough talk on the internet. Stop being so negative about a basketball legend.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?pcode=BEZ&clubcode=PAN&seasoncode=e2010 ANTONIS FOTSIS

@Ben……..:if i bumped him into the street i crowd him and act like his number1 fan(If i bump him into the street and he is homeless i take him to dinner and try to help him) it will be for his athletic abilities (phenomenal once upon a time) not his bball abilities. I just love track&field and great leapers(bball has the best ones nowdays cause it pays much better than athletics). What i say is not “tough talk” against A.I. cause a) i know the limitations that he had from the begining and i know he couldn’t do much different so up to a point he is excused to me (but he could at least try, he didn’t try at all) b) i ain’t writing only towards to A.I. when i’m posting, i ‘m writing basically towards all those wrong things in bball that he represents and for the sake of marketing/sales/$$$ we had to tolerate all those years….

  • kos87

Although usually the Greek guy’s comments are really annoying, I think he hit the nail on the head here.

  • Purple & Gold

I’m sorry but I just never was a fan of AI and I’ve been watching him since his days at Georgetown as a Hoya. He’s always been selfish his entire career. Even in his best season when he won league MVP in 2001 and lost to the Lakers in the Finals Larry Brown said he had a real hard time getting AI to play a team game and to get his teammates involved. As for he has legion of fabs on here and worldwide. It’s mainly because he appealed to the hip hop generation early on in his career that SLAM, Rebok did a great job marketing him before he had all of his crazy off the court problems. But after watching the goof ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “The Trial Of Allen Iverson” he already had off the court problems in his high school days and John Thompson knew even back then he had a lot to deal with. If John Thompson who people says AI looks up to like a father figure can’t get to AI now then it’s pretty much over and AI will continue his sad last playing days.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?pcode=BEZ&clubcode=PAN&seasoncode=e2010 ANTONIS FOTSIS

@purple & Gold……: A.I. largely being a SLAM & Reebok marketing result is 100% true. Mind you that this common sense truth just a few years ago was considered nonsence. What was obvious to those who know since 1998 is just now becoming edible to the average fun…at the same time somebody should be really retarded to expect coming here and having an impartial take on the Iverson case (bball wise, forget the off-court things). It’s like going to a car manufacturer that has spend millions promoting a certain model (AND has made millions in sales) and expecting from him to admit that this certain model is actually terrible on the road. Well, they were the ones who MADE the f…n thing what can they say…??!! Same with Anna and SLAM….

Stephen A. Smith, who actually knows AI, has said that Gary Moore is the reason why we have not heard from AI. I want to hear AI speak for himself. Apparently, he needs to stop partying, get in shape, and then he could play in the league again. Let’s be honest. AI should not have been coming off the bench in Detroit behind Rodney Stuckey (a shoot first point guard without a jumpshot). Michael Curry was a horrible coach who warranted no respect.. If he was in shape, he would have gotten offers from better teams last season. And he was a model citizen in Philly this past season before his daughter got sick. I don’t want to see him playing in Turkey when there are a few teams who could still use him in the league. I would rather see him retire now as a sure fire Hall of Famer. Sometimes, what works for you can become what works against you.

I’m an AI fan, but not an AI apologist. The phrase you reap what you sow applies here. At some point the one being dealt the bad hand has to look in the mirror. Happens once, ok, bad luck. But a continual pattern indicates that AI is just at fault as the so-called “industry” against him.

AI is definitely a Hall of Famer. That’s a sure thing. Just because one doesn’t like him, doesn’t mean you can discount what he’s done or the kind of player he was. His resume speaks for itself. The only thing missing is a ring.
@ Fotsis, you know nothing about basketball. That’s also a sure thing. To compare Anna Kournikova to AI? Maybe you should stick to tennis. Basketball’s not your thing.

  • rob stewart

A.I. is a hall of famer. Don’t get talent/skills confused with likability. I think Kobe is arrogant and was wrong for the Colorado incident. I’m not even a Kobe fan but I’m not stupid enough to discount his actual game. I guess Mike Vick is a hoorible QB because of his past too. AI is H.O.Fer

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?pcode=BEZ&clubcode=PAN&seasoncode=e2010 ANTONIS FOTSIS

@Bryan……:i already stated i won’t argue on this , time is on my side. Just remember this,it is one of the most important things i came to learn in my journey in the world of philosophy(take notes my little ones):
“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” (Arthur Schopenhauer) We are now moving from the first to second stage in the Anna case.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?pcode=BEZ&clubcode=PAN&seasoncode=e2010 ANTONIS FOTSIS

important note: don’t too spend much time on Schopenhauer’s writings, although we are talking one of the great thinkers in the history of humanity his ideas is clearly pessimistic…of course it merits to have a general idea of his philosophy. Just don’t over do it….

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

Someone didn’t watch the Euroleague Finals! Or, well, anything I guess.
Lots of dumb fouls, awful dribbling which caused constant turnovers, breakdowns in the zone, hell even layups are being missed because they’re just chucking them up. Fundamentals are disappearing.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Yeah…. European Basketball is booooring! At least AI will help it in that aspect.

  • VisionofGreatness

@Fotsis, No one cares about your philosophy. This has nothing to do with philosophy. This is about basketball. Spend more time watching basketball, less time trying to wax philsophical. All it takes is a look at his game, watch him play, look at his career and it’s easy to conclude that he is a Hall of Famer. In regards to your little attempt at philosophy with that quote, that would require you to actually be speaking the truth, which you’re not. So it will only get to the first stage…it will always be ridiculed. Because it’s false.

  • tavoris

@Pardeep-what r u talking about??? Euroleague is where it’s at!!! You didn’t know that 10 of the top 12 players All-time are in the Euroleague right now? Spanny’s rankings are GOSPEL.

read my 8:32 am comment AGAIN (while sober). I’ain’t saying he is making it or not,i just said “DON’T BE SO SURE” (certainty to me means first ballot, 100%,etc). At the moment it is 50/50. 50% he is ‘in’ (based on marketing impact, etc) 50% he is out (based on bball value). His (inefficiently inflated) numbers that avoided (for all the wrong reasons) the normal decline that suffer all serious all-time greats’ numbers (players that continue to contribute even when they are past their athletic prime) will lead us (maybe) to one of the biggest bball misjudgments in the history of the game.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Greek dude can’t just make a statement of “don’t be so sure” re: AI in the HOF and then in the same sentence back off and say he doesn’t want to talk about it and that time is on his side. You don’t like AI, we get it. What happened, did he embarass you on the court or something? All of a sudden you’re the “protector of the game” by bashing AI? Whatever… Allen Iverson changed basketball. He was good for the game. It doesn’t matter that he didn’t win. Lots of greats didn’t win (Reggie Miller, Pat Ewing, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Charles Barkely), it happens. But this personal grudge/vendetta that you have against Iverson makes me think he went to work on you somewhere and you’ve never gotten over it.

Wow, didn’t know that mental institutes recommended the Slamonline comments section as an emotional outlet to their worst cases. I haven’t reacted to anything the trolling, insulting pathetic excuse for a homo sapiens has written since his foot got planted firmly in his mouth during the World Championships and his merry band of 3pt chuckers shot their way out of the tournament (Bourousis was a revelation, what a center….attempting 5 three’s a game, such fundamental skills, wow) but he still rambles on and on, trying to start online fights, while murdering the english language along the way, making up tournament titles, goading people who have repeatedly proven him wrong on multiple posts. An obvious candidate for human of the year.

i’ve learned not to trust the euroleague since jasikevicius came over to the NBA and was absolutely terrible. i mean, i caught a game in spring 09 while i was on vacay in barcelona and david andersen was just KILLING mofos down there on the block. HAVE YOU SEEN DAVID ANDERSEN PLAY FOR THE ROCKETS LAST YEAR?!!! the euroleague can produce some good players here and there but the level of comp is still not very good compared to the nba. quincy lewis was running things for the team facing barça. quincy lewis! euroleague is where americans that can’t stick to the league go get a check.

Greek dude, is still insisting that time is on his side when it comes to AI in the HOF, haha. So when he does get in (which he will), Greek dude, what will you say then? Will you be disappointed? Will you blame SLAM? Or will you shut up forever and go away. The Euroleague sucks. How bad? They named the leading scorer award, not after a European, but an American. Your misguided hate is sad, yet so comical. The Euroleague will always be the step-child in the world of basketball. That’s why so many Euro players want to be in the NBA. But keep holding fast to the notion that Iverson isn’t a HOF’er. Time is on your side…you can talk trash until you see him inducted.

Just realized that while my earlier response to the Euro-brat’s taunting doesn’t constitute “flaming or trolling”, giving the fool any more of my attention and then firing back in kind does break some commenting rule here. Then again, 1 impolite, clueless fool who thinks he alone knows what basketball is, calling out commenters names and insulting them over and over again sure violates the commenting rules, too bad Ryne and Co. seem to give his Greekdoucheness carte blanche. oh well, “see no evil”, i guess.

@Darksaber-just comment about him as if he’s the slow person in the room.

  • http://Slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@Darksaber: It’s funny. You’d think Christos has a HOF vote or something… Hey Christos, just because you don’t like a guy or feel he doesn’t deserve recognition as one of the greatest basketball players to ever play, doesn’t mean he won’t be recognized as one of the greatest basketball players to ever play and be immortalized in the HOF. Sorry dude, but fortunately, nobody left the game in your hands. If they did, guys that you love like Scola (who you stupidly rank ahead of guys who are HOF’ers) and other random garbage Euro players would be in the HOF.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@cHRISTOS: You’re correct. Allen Iverson is not a HOF’er is a VERY complicated concept. And if you can admit as much, then it shows just how ridiculous the notion is and how it’s rooted in your own personal, and very misguided concepts. Unless you have a vote, I suggest you stop speaking for those who do and have sense enough to recognize Iverson’s accomplishments and achievements and what he brought to the game of basketball.

  • MikeC.

I skimmed through a good chunk of the posts, so someone may have already touched on this, but I find it very telling that Iverson is attempting to negotiate that only 1% of his salary can be taken away in fines. What regular-thinking person even asks for that? He’s already planning to break team rules and act like an a-hole and he’s not even on the team yet. Alarm bells are ringing.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

A 1-year deal with a percentage of ad revenues – that could be pretty lucrative. Throw in a house, luxury car, 1.5-2mil and incentives – not a bad deal at all. This may be his last chance to show NBA teams that A) he’s still got something left and B) He’s ready to ‘behave’. The whole 1% cap on being fined and weekly paychecks sounds like a protective measure or something where he doesn’t trust the team and making sure they don’t take advanatage of him or come up with un-justified fines for the sake of protecting team revenue. I can’t think of any other reason to even bring up the fine situation or getting paid every week unless there was something more to it. But maybe it’s as simple as he thinks he’s going ot bail on the team and ‘act-up’ again so he doesn’t want to leave with 2-3 weeks of pay on the table. I hope this isn’t his thought process, but this is AI.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Greek dude doesn’t like Iverson because he used to be a massive fan and got disappointed. He admitted previously that he was riding Iverson’s sack coming out of college, but felt like AI didn’t do enough to develop his God-given talent. I’m sure the cornrows and tattoos didn’t help either.
So, he’s basically a woman scorned. Are any of you still surprised by his reactions to Iverson?

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

    Spanoulis is still awful

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

@Allenp: I think we’re all a little disappointed that AI ultimately didn’t end up being the player (or person) that we all thought. Still, nobody should actually hate the guy for it. He was still a talent in the NBA. That goes without saying. But I didn’t know that Christos was an Iverson fan but knowing that, it all makes sense now. AI was his hero and “Chuck” subsequently let him down probably to the ridicule and embarassment at the hands of all his friends. Dude probably has a replica of one of AI’s tats and maybe even tried to braid his hair too. Poor thing… It’s hard out here for a Greek.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Bryan, I agree with you completely. No rational person can look at Iverson and say he reached his full potential as a player. Doesn’t mean he wasn’t great though…

  • http://MzColumbo5529@yahoo.com Mrs. Lee

This is definitely sad news. I agree with BryanC. A.I. is very talented. Just didn’t
have all the players he needed to help him get his real shine on. Probably had some bad advice along the way as well. I would have loved to see him get an ring while in the NBA, but it is what it is. A.I. is still trying to be out there doing it how he do!! Peace, love and life to A.I and his fam.

  • MikeC.

Iverson is simply a washed up headcase who isn’t worth the trouble any more. The cons heavily outweigh the pros in any scenario involving Iverson playing professional basketball. I enjoyed him at his peak just like anyone who enjoyed palming, traveling, terrible shot selection, alienating team-oriented players, and professionals who refuse to practice and act like professionals. Iverson is under 6-feet tall, too thin to withstand NBA-level pounding, and has arthritis in his knees. He also refuses to be a team player, play a role for a good team, and follow team rules. Sounds like the perfect addition to a championship contender, or building team.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

@Mike C: When in Philly did he refuse to be a team player? when did he not follow team rules(how do u even know what team rules are for an NBA team?), when did he take terrible shots in Philly? He played the most team oriented basketball of his career and this was after taking a month off…………..One big mistake AI made was adding that weight(20 lbs) after the 07/08 season in Denver, he got thick, lost some quickness and explosiveness, AI didn’t need to carry 20 more pounds around on 33 year old legs… he couldn’t blow by people with ease anymore the same thing happened to Michael Vick when he went to jail and came out he was thick and slow but this off season he and his trainer trained the right way doing plyometric drills and he got that quickness back. I am guessing and hoping AI did that same type of training he is a gifted athlete who can get it back in a month because he was naturally born with that quickness, that quickness has been doormat since he left Detroit and it took a big hit in the month off before Philly, playing in the Princeton Offense didn’t help his stats either. Bottom line is this all comes down to AI’s quickness he no longer has that quickness to blow by anyone he wants and its not all because of age the main reason is the weight gain and the change of training. If he gets it back which I hope he has, AI WILL BE BACK IN THE LEAGUE NEXT YEAR

  • kos87

You re all hating on Christos and I can’t blame you because his way is very annoying but what he says is not wrong at all.I loved watching AI during his prime, his quickness, handle, scoring was a sight to behold. But it grew old quickly and at the end I realised he is the most fascinating loser in the game. His style of play although very nice to watch, is more harmful than beneficiary to his team.Because of his streetball look, attitude and play he gained a lot of fans and the league promoted this for many years but after Stern decided the league needed a change of direction (from one-on-one,flashy to more serious, team oriented style) he no longer had the same promotion.Remember the dresscode?Nash 2 MVP’s?The hype guys like Darius Miles,Steve Francis etc had back then-they are running jokes now-?Things have changed and AI was exposed as an ineffective,high-volume,low percentage scorer and a difficult person to say the least. His inability to compromise and accept a different role didn’t help him either. It is always difficult to accept when an idol (rigthful or not) is presented in a different way…I don’t know about the HOF but his NBA career is pretty much over.

  • Joosh

Iverson is still amazing. he scored 26 ppg in denver 2 years ago. detroit was a team that emphasized team( no star player) which was the wrong environment for him. Memphis was unlucky because he had limited playing time. If i were the knicks, i’d sign him for a year and let him do his thang with amare. They would be amazing to watch, crossovers and facial dunks all day baby

one remind to you Besiktas is a 108 years old club..greeks knows better in history and in all branches in football we signed quaresma and guti and more famous names on the apst not only veterans like greek clubs..and please can you count me 49 stonger and biggest clubs than Besiktas if we are not in top 50..it is right Besiktas not in euroleague but in the uleb and turkish leage is in the top 3 league in the europe and besiktas one of the best teams in Turkish League , also Besiktas arena is very special and only we have this kind of supporter group whom has a decibel records…so It will be great chance for AI , We will see … THANK YOU AI and THANK YOU BESIKTAS !

  • MikeC.

@Joosh – I’m a Knicks fan. No thanks. D’Antoni’s system is predicated on ball movement, movement without the ball and outside shooting. Things that Iverson has never done. Never ever? Never ever. Also, the Knicks have a roster full of very young players. They don’t need Iverson to show them how to ruin their careers. We simply don’t need a 34 year old headcase with arthritic knees slowing down the development of the team. Donnie Walsh was brought in to avoid these Isiah-type moves.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Only won team can win the NBA championship.
It’s amazing that everybody laments the style of play Iverson used and how it couldn’t “win” while the style of play Steve Nash uses is considered the epitome of team basketball.
Yet, Nash surrounded by far superior talent his entire career has never been able to advance to the NBA finals. True, he’s played in a tougher conference, but he’s still been surrounded by great, Hall of Fame level talent his entire time in the league.
How can Iverson not be a “winner” when he regularly took a Philly team was woefully short on talent to the second round of the playoffs, typically losing to a title contending Pacers team, before he finally had his big breakthrough when the Pacers got old. His Sixers team was the ONLY team to win a single game against the Lakers that playoffs, and for the first three games of hte Finals, it was anybody’s series. And that was despite the fact that Mutombo had dislocated fingers, Eric Snow had a bad ankle and Aaron Mckie fractured his ankle in Game One of the series. Hell, the Sixers were a Robert Horry clutch three pointer away from having a 2-1 lead in that series, in case y’all have forgotten.
It’s amazing how people allow their personal bias to shape reality. I don’t deny that Iverson should have trained harder, or that he could have taken steps to make his game more teammate friendly. But, that’s a byproduct of the current NBA and the failure of most coaches to design offenses that utilize their stars strengths and keep their role players involved. It’s funny how Iverson is seen as a ball hogging chucker for basically playing the same game as DWade and LeBron.
    Perception is a motha.
