Blazers Interested in Fabricio Oberto

Rich Cho, the Blazers’ GM, tells the Oregonian that the Blazers are interested in Oberto but that a deal is nowhere close to being done: “The Trail Blazers’ revolving door of rumored big man targets now includes Fabricio Oberto, a 6-foot-10 Argentinian with five seasons of NBA experience. But reports suggesting that Oberto is weighing a contract offer from the Blazers are premature. Blazers general manager Rich Cho acknowledged that the Blazers have been in contact with Oberto — and a host of other centers — since Jeff Pendergraph was lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. But Cho also said the Blazers have not extended a formal contract offer to the one-time San Antonio Spurs forward. ‘I’ve asked about him, but we’re not close to doing anything,’ Cho said of Oberto.”

The Blazers seem to have a curse hanging over them. It seemed to start when they drafted Oden over Durant. Coincidence? Good thing Camby seems to be immune.

Oberto’s nothing without Duncan and Pop.

I dont get it, We have our back-up power forward go down, so we start signing centers like its going outta style?? Already had (healthy or not) Camby,Oden,Pryzbilla.. Just signed Steven Hill.. WE NEED A POWER FORWARD..

@BossTerry in today’s nba, C and PF are the same thing. just like SG and SF. positions don’t matter anymore; we just need a backup big.

True… Hope we have better health this season.. I got my tickets, but after dividing them up throughout the family, only keeping 2 games for myself.. (Id rather watch from home most of the time anyway..)

  • dma

yeah i’d prefer to watch this year at home too now that rebecca harlow is gone.

@BossTerry – know what’s sad about the PF need? Aldridge got a phat extension last season…FML.

I haven’t seen much of Oberto but he seems to have a healthy record..

@Anton- Provided he stays healthy, I expect Aldridge to have a great year, and maybe even an A.S.G. nominee.. (I think he could out play Z-bo thru-out a full season) Just wish they would sign a 1 year TRUE P.F. To back him up.. (would like to see them grab Flip Murray too, but im not holding my breath)

Because of the feuding with Roy, I think Dre Miller will be gone by X-Mas, I say package him with Fernandez (No time for Rudy behind Roy and Matthews) for a respectable back-up 4.. Sign and start f/a Murray with Bayless at his back-up, and Patty Mills getting garbage minutes..

I think this is a make or break year for LA in terms of him as a player. It really started last year when he didn’t raise his game with Roy out, but with Dre likely gone soon (which is in no way good for the team, only for Brandon), Aldridge needs to raise his game to the nth degree. It’s really a shame that Roy feels Dre is taking his playmaking role as the ball will always be in the hands of him in the 4th. Anyway, so far (I know, it’s just preseason), LA’s posting about similar rebounding numbers per minutes played and doesn’t look all that different from last year. The full season will tell the tale but I’m not feeling particularly optimistic about his ability to assert himself.

Remember when blazers had a glut of solid, young talent? Its gone, blake, outlaw, webster are all gone. Rudy will be too. Wes matthews was a nice addition, but overspend much? Blazers will have a tough time making the playoffs

Roy is not a point guard, but at the end of games, in crunch time, he wants to be the decision-maker with the ball in his hands, much like Kobe, LeBron, etc. I feel we could use a pg who is ok with this, I didnt really like him when we had him, but a Steve Blake type of pg who wont hoot and holler about sitting on the bench at the end of close games.. I do agree that it is a make or break season for L.A., and should the Blazers fail to reach the 2nd round of the playoffs, I think McMillan is gone..

Is it too soon to do a “for old times sake” piece on Oden?

  • dma

Miller was a horrible pickup. I don’t care what anyone says, he was trouble. KP cleared all that cap room and got NOTHING significant out of it. Matthews overpaid? Yes probably, but it’s going to be hard to play the Blazers with a (Oden) Camby, LA, Batum, Roy and Matthews crunchtime lineup.

  • SoCalHoopsFan

Miller is an overrated/under-performing pg that wasn’t the type of pass-first player they needed to place alongside Roy in the backcourt. They needed a pass-first, smart distributor that could hit an open 3 – someone like Steve Blake. Oh wait…

Pissed off Rudy too for his inconsistent minutes, he should have seen more time, but without bigs to spread the floor with, their entire team collapses.

A ton of people knew the Blazers were making the wrong move with Oden, but the curse has spread to the rest of their bigs. Aldridge seems immune to the post, maybe he doesn’t want the curse to strike him.

A couple years ago the Blazers were the ‘up-and-coming’ team? Now? They’ll be lucky to make the playoffs, and have been passed by the OKC and Grizz. Sucks to be a Blazer fan right now…

    uhhhhh……?????? why……????

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@ so cal- umm, no it doesnt suck to be a Blazer fan.. Yeah the injuries are frustrating, but even a short handed Blazer squad made the playoffs last year.. Blazers often beat (given your s/n) your beloved Lakers, and would probably be pumped to play them in the 1st round.. I dont see many teams from the west ahead of this Blazer team.. When (if ever) healthy, they are very solid at every position..

^i got the thunder ahead of them man
