Bulls Sign Joakim Noah to Extension: 5 Years, $60 Million

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Following months of negotiations (not to mention, trade rumors) the Chicago Bulls and Joakim Noah have agreed on a contract extension. Noah will be a Bull for a long time, something he will be well compensated for.

The deal is worth $60 million over the next 5 years, and includes performance-based bonuses. Joakim is coming off the best season of his young career, one that saw him average a double-double.

ESPN and Chicago Breaking Sports report:

The deal is worth $60 million plus additional bonuses, Dan Fegan, one of Noah’s agents, said. “We’re very happy for Joakim because Chicago was always his first choice,” Fegan said.

The exact amount of the extension is unknown but believed to be in the $60 million range total. Incentives can take the deal higher, and a source said the inclusion of these incentives represented the breakthrough in negotiations. Sources said earlier published reports portraying the negotiations as acrimonious or far apart were overblown.

With Chicago retaining Noah — one of the best young forwards in the League — it helps solidify the fact that they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA over the next few years.

The Bulls just gotta figure out how to stop their star players from injuring themselves in the absolute strangest ways.

This, kids, is why you make hustle plays.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Hustling will get you paid…take that any way you’d like.

  • Jer Dawg

If Noah could just make free throws and occasional J then this guy is Really earning his dough. He’s pretty good at lots of things on the court.

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstysyd Hursty

    That picture is highly disturbing.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Good to see him stay in Chicago. He deserved this extension. With Boozer out until December Noah and Taj Gibson are going to have to step their games up. I don’t see any reason that either of them won’t do just that.

  • Reflex

I REALLY like Noah but he just got overpaid, for $12m a year I’d like my forwards to play at a high level on BOTH sides of the court. jUST SAYIN’

Not worth that much and I am a fan of him, but when people on Slam are comparing him to Dennis Rodman, he gets Rodman money for being his poor man version. BOOK IT!!

I was at a Raps game when we gave it to Bosh in an iso, at the end of the game, down 2. Noah played him straight up, 1 on 1, and blocked him to win the game. Take from that what you will.

I understand why they did what they did but… let’s hope for the Bulls that Noah keeps on improving. This is going to be the team for a long time with 3 guys making 12 mil+ (Booz, Noah, Deng) and D-Rose waiting to be extended. Noah posted 10 and 11 with 1.5 blocks on 50% shooting last year. It’s good but even a guy like Dampier had a 12 and 12 year with 2 blocks on 53% shooting at one point.

@Jer Dawg – Noah shot 75% from the line, I don’t know why you’d single out a fairly decent percentage and say he needs to improve there.
@Reflex – First off, Noah is a center. Second, he averaged 11 points and 11 rebounds last year…which side of the ball is he not playing on??? That’s as balanced as it gets. I don’t mind people hating, but at least use facts.

  • http://Slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

With Derrick Rose up for an extension next year, don’t expect Luol Deng to be around much longer. They can’t afford to pay 4 guys that much money. They’ll have to find some way to trade Lu, or, like they did with Kirk Hinrich, just give him away.

I’m not hating, I like Noah & I appreciate his hustle but as you say $12m per yr for 11-11??, imo a centre/fwd needs to be nearer 20-10 money to be making that sort of guap. I reiterate, I really like Noah, but got overpaid, not like JJ or gay but still..

That’s 11 points without a single play run for him on offense. When it really counted, in the playoffs, those averages went up to 15 and 13. Its sounding like Thibs is going to be runing an inside out offense with the ball moving through noah or boozer on every play. If that’s the case I expect that number to go up.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Early on, with Boozer out, I fully expect Noah to average at least 13, maybe 15 points a game. If healthy enough, and Thibs decides to play Noah at least 35 minutes a game, which he has never averaged that many, I could see him averaging like 15 and 12. Not bad at all.

  • hammer

Bulls using their smarts. Nice way 2 elimin8 any and all trade rumors that were swirling round him. Especially that f**k up of a deal of noah 4 melo. Go toros!

  • http://sdfklflc.com Jukai

Might be a little much, but you know? Enough quoting his stats, He’s one of those guys who reallllly can’t be summed up with stats. Savvy passing, great ball movement, above average post defense, moves the floor well and is great at spacing, those things don’t show up in stats and Noah has them in spades. It’s not just hustle, the guy understands the game, even if he can’t dribble and shoot. He’s valuable.
Maybe not 12 million valuable but close.

  • larrylegend

bargain, mos def not too much, will pay off in the PO!

  • http://sdfklflc.com Jukai

I mean, doesn’t it say something that Noah knows his role, never demands the ball and scores solely on garbage buckets? Was it his lack of offense or lack of offense run for him?

  • Ghost

Nothing from Anton yet? I’m disappointed.

  • sheesh12

A little overpaid, sure. But relative to what he means to the bulls this deal is right on the money (no pun intended). Chicago simply couldn’t afford (again, no pun) to let him go, and every championship team needs a player like Noah. Tough, rebounds, nasty, and scores when the opportunity (i.e. missed shots or the occasional short jumper/dump-off) is there. Highly efficient player who brings a leadership presence to the floor and makes everyone else more comfortable alongside him. A vocal presence to complement Rose’s more quiet demeanor. And who doesn’t want their center to look like an amazon warrior???

@J-Ro – they’ve been trying to keep money free this year in case of a rudy fernandez trade. Otherwise, the Bulls have been operating under the assumption that they wouldn’t have any cap room for the next 3 years.

  • T-Money

i’ve always wondered: why doesn’t noah catch any heat from the league and the media for being a pot head? he’s been pictured on at least 3 different occasions smoking blunts and was seen in a head shop last year…i actually don’t care about the morality angle but smoking weed is kinda stupid when part of your job is to be as fit as possible.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

T-Money do some more research on the health effects….

  • SpaceJam

Noah completely deserves the money. He is the heart and soul of our team. He is one of the best passing bigmen in the league. He is a very good post defender. He runs the court well. Can initiate the break, rebounds top 2 in the league when healthy and can score 12-16 points without set plays. He deserves all the $ he got

  • T-Money

nbk: elaborate. are you arguing that smoking weed does or does not affect your heath. inhaling smoke is a health hazard in itself.

its not a theory. its been tested. i’m not saying its something people should be doing at all. I’m just saying, doing it recreationally (not all the time) is not gonna hurt your fitness as long as it doesn’t affect your excersice schedule or daily activity level. The actual Blunt Wrap on the other hand has obvious adverse health effects.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

There are studies that say anything.
Smoking is stupid because it’s illegal and getting caught means bad publicity and a suspension. Otherwise, it’s no worse than drinking alcohol.

  • http://sdjflf.com Jukai

Just cause there’s testing, doesn’t mean it is anything more than a theory.
However, on google, the only ‘growth’ I see about smoking weed is about cancer, not health. But hey, what does google know!

  • http://sdjflf.com Jukai

Allenp: I think weed is a bit worse than alcohol in that you generally drink way more than you smoke.
But cigs are a hella lot worse than both.
    Yer right though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Its not even close to alcohol. Alcohol is a poison, MJ is a medicine. Every US test on Marijuana is bogus – considering testing on the substance is illegal – most of what we learn in our culture regarding it is driven by political motives. Starting with how it became illegal.

Dude nbk, I generally don’t give a sh!t about pot but stop trying to pass it off as completely harmless. It obviously damages your lungs and messes with your head, which is why driving under the influence of pot is dangerous. Like alcohol. I’m not saying it should be illegal or legal, but if you’re going to use it at least know the potential harms… And yes it is a medicine, but no medicine is without side effects.
And Allenp: Just because something is no worse than alcohol doesn’t mean it’s smart to use.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

By don’t give a sh!t I mean, I don’t use it but enough people do so w/e. Legal or illegal it doesn’t affect me.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Teddy I am not getting in an argument about this with you. I didn’t say it was harmless. Understanding what it actually does to a person and believing everything you hear and see in anti-drug, politically driven “public service” “educational programs” are different. This subject is still dominated by ignorance, and this is not the proper place for the discussion.

I love how every stoner moonlights as a medical researcher. They can’t keep a job but give them 2 qtips, some dental floss, 3 paperclips, and an empty toothpaste tube and they’ll make you a bong.

  • JTaylor21

@Teddy, I’m going to have to disagree with you placing Weed and Alcohol in the same sentence because one kills tens of thousands of people each year while the other makes thousands of people very very hungry. There is no way that weed should be illegal while such a deadly killer like alcohol is so easy to get and is advertised at an alarming rate. Watch any game on Sunday and you’ll probably see an alcohol commercial every 20 seconds where everyone’s having a “Good” time but they neglect to show you the part where you’re throwing-up a lung in a toilet and driving without being able to see 5 feet in front of you. Weed is GOOD and Alcohol is the Devil’s drink.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Alcohol is literally a poison. That’s why your body reacts the way it does. Thats why you have Alcohol poisoning. There are zero reported cases of Marijuana caused death, in human history.
“the record on marijuana encompasses 5,000 years of human experience. Second, marijuana is now used daily by enormous numbers of people throughout the world. Estimates suggest that from twenty million to fifty million Americans routinely, albeit illegally, smoke marijuana without the benefit of direct medical supervision. Yet, despite this long history of use and the extraordinarily high numbers of social smokers, there are simply no credible medical reports to suggest that consuming marijuana has caused a single death.”

“By contrast aspirin, a commonly used, over-the-counter medicine, causes hundreds of deaths each year.”

Dont be that ahole who drinks a gallon of ‘ol tinys alkoswill’ and run wild thru town on your horse, lets your horse hump others horses, break fences, and jump in front of a train. Seriously, horse guts are hard to clean off a train. Have you ever tried? Jebus! It takes forever. So if your gonna get plowed on ‘ol tinys alkoswill’ stay off the roads and in a saloon. I don’t think MJ is THAT bad either, but it doesn’t really affect me at all, so yeah. There are positives/negatives to both keeping it illegal and legalizing it.
nbk, that statistic you used is sort of misleading. I highly doubt it took into account lung cancer patients who contracted the disease through the weed smoke they inhaled…
And T-Money is right about marijuana impacting athletes. Athletes need their lungs.
    Just some thoughts.

The rest are either exposed to 2nd hand tobacco use or the cause is uknown. CLICK MY NAME you will find an article that consisted of 1200 people. Here is a quote, the hypothesis came from people like you Teddy – “We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”

I wasn’t comparing weed to alcohol in the sense of which one is worse for your body.
I was noting that both of them are substances that impact brain function and motor skills and for one to be legal, while the other is illegal seems a little strange. I don’t think weed is on the same level as other illegal drugs, and I’m well aware of the hemp back story, so I have a good idea why it’s illegal.
Basically, I’m not positive about NBK’s medical studies, but I do reject the moral argument that weed is horrible in all forms. However, I think that if you’re an NBA player and you regularly consume an illegal substnace just for personal enjoyment then you are placing yourself and your team in a bad spot and you should catch heat.
    Sorry I wasn’t clearer.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

unequivocal truth? when did i say that? i was just citing one specific study, considering its the biggest of its type i thought it would get the most respect. Just database studies similar, there are plenty of resources out there with recent relevant information.
