Bulls Sign Joakim Noah to Extension: 5 Years, $60 Million

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Following months of negotiations (not to mention, trade rumors) the Chicago Bulls and Joakim Noah have agreed on a contract extension. Noah will be a Bull for a long time, something he will be well compensated for.

The deal is worth $60 million over the next 5 years, and includes performance-based bonuses. Joakim is coming off the best season of his young career, one that saw him average a double-double.

ESPN and Chicago Breaking Sports report:

The deal is worth $60 million plus additional bonuses, Dan Fegan, one of Noah’s agents, said. “We’re very happy for Joakim because Chicago was always his first choice,” Fegan said.

The exact amount of the extension is unknown but believed to be in the $60 million range total. Incentives can take the deal higher, and a source said the inclusion of these incentives represented the breakthrough in negotiations. Sources said earlier published reports portraying the negotiations as acrimonious or far apart were overblown.

With Chicago retaining Noah — one of the best young forwards in the League — it helps solidify the fact that they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA over the next few years.

The Bulls just gotta figure out how to stop their star players from injuring themselves in the absolute strangest ways.

T-Money do some more research on the health effects….

  • SpaceJam

Noah completely deserves the money. He is the heart and soul of our team. He is one of the best passing bigmen in the league. He is a very good post defender. He runs the court well. Can initiate the break, rebounds top 2 in the league when healthy and can score 12-16 points without set plays. He deserves all the $ he got

  • T-Money

nbk: elaborate. are you arguing that smoking weed does or does not affect your heath. inhaling smoke is a health hazard in itself.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

T-Money i don’t like this public forum as a place to discuss this, but there are just certain aspects of it (as long as its not an everyday consistent thing) that actual promote Lung Health and increase oxygen absorbtion.

deserves a raise, but 60 mil is overpaid in my opinion, not hating, good for him, you all can talk sh*t but it’s his money, doesn’t care what anyone else thinks

nbk: i’m sorry but i’m calling bs on that theory until proven otherwise.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

its not a theory. its been tested. i’m not saying its something people should be doing at all. I’m just saying, doing it recreationally (not all the time) is not gonna hurt your fitness as long as it doesn’t affect your excersice schedule or daily activity level. The actual Blunt Wrap on the other hand has obvious adverse health effects.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

There are studies that say anything.
Smoking is stupid because it’s illegal and getting caught means bad publicity and a suspension. Otherwise, it’s no worse than drinking alcohol.

  • http://sdjflf.com Jukai

Just cause there’s testing, doesn’t mean it is anything more than a theory.
However, on google, the only ‘growth’ I see about smoking weed is about cancer, not health. But hey, what does google know!

  • http://sdjflf.com Jukai

Allenp: I think weed is a bit worse than alcohol in that you generally drink way more than you smoke.
But cigs are a hella lot worse than both.
    Yer right though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Its not even close to alcohol. Alcohol is a poison, MJ is a medicine. Every US test on Marijuana is bogus – considering testing on the substance is illegal – most of what we learn in our culture regarding it is driven by political motives. Starting with how it became illegal.

Dude nbk, I generally don’t give a sh!t about pot but stop trying to pass it off as completely harmless. It obviously damages your lungs and messes with your head, which is why driving under the influence of pot is dangerous. Like alcohol. I’m not saying it should be illegal or legal, but if you’re going to use it at least know the potential harms… And yes it is a medicine, but no medicine is without side effects.
And Allenp: Just because something is no worse than alcohol doesn’t mean it’s smart to use.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

By don’t give a sh!t I mean, I don’t use it but enough people do so w/e. Legal or illegal it doesn’t affect me.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Teddy I am not getting in an argument about this with you. I didn’t say it was harmless. Understanding what it actually does to a person and believing everything you hear and see in anti-drug, politically driven “public service” “educational programs” are different. This subject is still dominated by ignorance, and this is not the proper place for the discussion.

I love how every stoner moonlights as a medical researcher. They can’t keep a job but give them 2 qtips, some dental floss, 3 paperclips, and an empty toothpaste tube and they’ll make you a bong.

  • JTaylor21

@Teddy, I’m going to have to disagree with you placing Weed and Alcohol in the same sentence because one kills tens of thousands of people each year while the other makes thousands of people very very hungry. There is no way that weed should be illegal while such a deadly killer like alcohol is so easy to get and is advertised at an alarming rate. Watch any game on Sunday and you’ll probably see an alcohol commercial every 20 seconds where everyone’s having a “Good” time but they neglect to show you the part where you’re throwing-up a lung in a toilet and driving without being able to see 5 feet in front of you. Weed is GOOD and Alcohol is the Devil’s drink.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Alcohol is literally a poison. That’s why your body reacts the way it does. Thats why you have Alcohol poisoning. There are zero reported cases of Marijuana caused death, in human history.
“the record on marijuana encompasses 5,000 years of human experience. Second, marijuana is now used daily by enormous numbers of people throughout the world. Estimates suggest that from twenty million to fifty million Americans routinely, albeit illegally, smoke marijuana without the benefit of direct medical supervision. Yet, despite this long history of use and the extraordinarily high numbers of social smokers, there are simply no credible medical reports to suggest that consuming marijuana has caused a single death.”

“By contrast aspirin, a commonly used, over-the-counter medicine, causes hundreds of deaths each year.”

Alcohol ad from 1816: dont drink and ride your horse. Dont be that ahole who drinks a gallon of ‘ol tinys alkoswill’ and run wild thru town on your horse, lets your horse hump others horses, break fences, and jump in front of a train. Seriously, horse guts are hard to clean off a train. Have you ever tried? Jebus! It takes forever. So if your gonna get plowed on ‘ol tinys alkoswill’ stay off the roads and in a saloon. Enjoy ‘ol tinys alkoswill’ responsibly.

a few years back a women died from over hydration (drinking too much water) during a marathon. Just an interesting fact considering the conversation.

  • Katbluefan

I don’t like Noah but I will give the him the credit he is due, he is one heck of a player and if anyone deserves the money he sure does. He does a lot more than about 60% of the other players.

  • Blackphantom

hahahaha nice Pulp Fiction quotes use

  • hammer

I c tarzan still on a hatin trip. Anyways. Just cuz alcohol isn’t illegal, doesn’t make it “safer” than mj. Remember prohibition? Alcohol is much much much worse. Alcohol poisoning, domestic violence, child abuse, car accidents, homicides. The list goes on when alcohol is a factor. Just stupid mofos who can’t handle their liquor. Yes mj has negatives as well but on a much much much less scale than alcohol. The 2 cannot b compared

  • Blackphantom

I agree with hammer, Alcohol is waaay more dangerous than alcohol

  • Blackphantom

But anyway, I think the Bulls did the right thing signing Noah to an extension, He’s probably the best hustle player in the league

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

blackphantom whatever made you say alcohol is more dangerous then alcohol is more dangerous then whatever your talking about. haha

  • Blackphantom

oh holy crap extreme typo, i meant alcohol is way more dangerous than MJ, holy crap sorry bout that

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

haha no stress just giving you a hard time

  • hangtime Hec

Marijuana is addicting, there is no medical use for it and is often considered a gateways. All of that can also be applied to Alcohol yet one is illegal and the other one is not. Oh and as nbk stated, MJ has yet to kill a single human being in the history of the world. Its pretty obvious that its illegality doesn’t stem from health issues.

  • hangtime Hec

    GateWay Drug*

  • T-Money

i really don’t care about the number of deaths marijuana can cause. what i do know is that smoking marijuana regularly will have a negative impact on an athlete’s performance, which is very stupid. noah should stop smoking.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Talk about going off on a tangent…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Kind of co-sign Diesel, no diss to anyone here of course.
nbk and JT: I never denied that alcohol is dangerous, and frankly I think the way we get bombarded with beer/liquor ads is stupid and hypocritical.
I don’t think MJ is THAT bad either, but it doesn’t really affect me at all, so yeah. There are positives/negatives to both keeping it illegal and legalizing it.
nbk, that statistic you used is sort of misleading. I highly doubt it took into account lung cancer patients who contracted the disease through the weed smoke they inhaled…
And T-Money is right about marijuana impacting athletes. Athletes need their lungs.
    Just some thoughts.

@Teddy – Find one person in the history of mankind who has been strictly a marijuana user who has lung cancer…85% of all people with lung cancer are tobacco users. The rest are either exposed to 2nd hand tobacco use or the cause is uknown. CLICK MY NAME you will find an article that consisted of 1200 people. Here is a quote, the hypothesis came from people like you Teddy – “We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use,” he said. “What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect.”
