Cavs: ‘We Are Going to Surprise a Lot of People’

Cleveland certainly kept its promise last night, by winning against the Celtics. And Dan Gilbert says the Cavs won’t be quite as awful as most expect them to be. From the Boston Globe: ‘What we’re trying to do is not really focus on the past,’’ Gilbert said before last night’s 95-87 win over the Celtics. ‘We’re trying to focus our efforts toward the future, and I believe if you do that, good things will happen to you.’ … So when Gilbert addressed the fans in a letter just an hour after ‘The Decision,’ he touched a nerve with those locals who expect bad things to happen. ‘I don’t regret it, and I said that over the last couple of days,’ Gilbert said yesterday. ‘That letter was to the fans. It wasn’t to the player that left. It wasn’t to the rest of the world. It wasn’t to anybody but the fans. I wanted them to understand not only how I felt but the organization.’ … In an Eastern Conference that is top-heavy but shaky following the first five teams, the Cavaliers have a legitimate shot at the playoffs — and, who knows, maybe a first-round matchup with the Heat. ‘We are going to surprise a lot of people,’ [Mo] Williams said. ‘We are going to win games. And this season, we deserve to win games.’”

Maybe this was the year, the Cavs as a team would have supported Lebron like everyone felt like they didn’t, eventhough the team had the best record two years straight in the Eastern confernce. Wouldn’t it be great for the Heat to play the Cavs in round one and the Cavs winning. That would go down as greatest upset ever, behind the Nuggets beating the Sonics in the first round best of 3 series years ago. BOOK IT!!!

that would be priceless Seed … and Mo take it easy cause you were thinking something else after Lebron left

I’m happy with the win and seing that we won’t just lay down there. But please no playoffs. We’re not playing for revenge. We are rebuilding. I’d be fine if the cavs miss this year’s playoffs to get a better chance on a higher lottery pick.

  • lexluther703

LOL at the Cavaliers who’ve built up this false sense of confidence when they’ve only played one game against an old Boston team playing the back end of a back-to-back.. hopefully Harrison Barnes is as good as advertised ’cause Cleveland will be in the lottery tryna get him..

  • ClydeSays

Didn’t think the Cavs would lay down, but like J said, they’re rebuilding and need to shed contracts and get some Lottery picks. Being the 7th or 8th seed in the Playoffs won’t help them long term…

  • PapaBearATL

Don’t get to excited Cleveland, you beat a fatigued veteran team that underestimated you, that’s all.

The Cavs played a solid team game on both ends of the floor. I didn’t expect much from them this season (and still don’t), however this was a solid win over a very very good celtics. They don’t have a realistic shot at a ring this year and will likely come just shy of making the playoffs (although it would not surprise me if they become the 7th or 8th seed). As of now, I’m just glad they are trying to win games versus throwing the season for a lottery pick. May not be the best rebuilding strategy, but it’s the ‘honorable’ thing to do. I might just become a Cavs fan.

lol, Mo was crying like a you-know-what when he heard Lebron was leaving

  • IHaveADream

Mo was thinking about retiring lol. His feelings were hurt. The Cavs will surprise people if they win more than 30 games. If they end up playing well after LeBron, why couldn’t they play well with him? They should have shown up in the playoffs. Mo Williams, the perpetual choke artist in the playoffs.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Does anyone else think Mo Williams will come back and screw up the chemistry by being too trigger happy? Its almost a bad thing the Cavs are starting out well, they need to bottom up so they can get a high draft pick.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Omphalos- I hope he won’t screw anythin’. Mo needs to get traded anyway. As a Cavs fan that would hurt me but he needs to. I like Sessions more as of late because of better playmaking.

  • kobesBESTfriend

Cavs are 1 superstar away from having the best record again…only if Dan Gilbert didnt burn all his bridges they could make Lebron look stupid 4 going to long beach

  • B-BallMaestro

I watched this game. Cav ballplayers and their fans were bonkers the whole game. It was like a College atmosphere after one of their top players had died and this was the next game to pick up the team and the community.

These guys hit a bunch of crazy shots, had crazy energy and got some home court cooking with the time keeper, when the Cavs tied the game with a three point shot late in the third quarter.

And of course the Celtics were tired and didn’t take them seriously.

  • http://slamonline.com Philly

Will be great if the cavs Can pull of a stunner against the heat in the first round

  • Drolfe

    Everyone else: No you’re not.

  • IHaveADream

At some point, that energy will die. A few blowouts and a few games where they need someone to carry them and no one shows up, it will die. Eventually, they will be like they were before LeBron got there. Jamario Moon and JJ Hickson can decide who will play the part of Darius Miles. Anderson Varejao can be a shorter version of Big Z. Mo Williams can be Dajuan Wagner.

  • Stepfan

Mo Williams said. ‘We are going to win games. And this season, we deserve to win games.’”…..IMPOSSIBLE.

“Even the sun shines on the dog’s a$s somedays”- Wesley Snipes, white men can’t jump.

  • LA Huey

Boston was playing on the road and has always had a reputation for playing down to their competition. Good win for the Cavs but let’s not take too much from last night.

  • spit hot fiyah

@seed: best of 5 that is

  • elmaar

they can get to the playoffs theoretically everything depends on team chemistry…
they can be pumped up after getting the win against the lackadasical celtics without lebron but truthfully they’re a lock for lottery and that because they are really weak at 3 and below average at the 2 plus nobody on the roster is a point guard except for sessions who might be an ok remember him from the milwaukee days when he was dimin pretty well, on the whole they’ll be in disarray when mo returns, that new gm needs to make some roster moves before they start announcing they will surpise anyone
that being sad lebron at the very least was half the team and that will translate in wins most definately

  • unrel

    b. scott is a solid coach.. he won’t let them mail in the season at all.. so i’m not surprised to be surprised.. i think bron/cavs just needed a serious big man down low.. that would have made a huge difference.. but.. no one wanted to go to cleveland..

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2010/10/cavs-we-are-going-to-surprise-a-lot-of-people/ Mike

I wouldn’t be suprised if the Cavs make the playoffs, they’re not the scrubs LeBron fans think they are

  • JD

They would be hard pushed to get into the playoffs but i they are lucky to have an owner like Dan Gilbert

  • CONEY ISLANDER

THEY ARE GONNA PLAY BETTER NATURALLY BECAUSE ALL THEY DID WHEN LEBRON WAS THERE WAS WATCH HIM IN AWE MAKE PLAY AFTER PLAY. BUT ON ANOTHER NOTE, IT’S ONE GAME, DON’T START MAPPING OUT PARADE ROUTES YET. YOU MAY SNEAK INTO THE PLAYOFFS IF YOUR LUCKY. SMH
    1 CELTICS
    2 HEAT

U got the Pacers playoff bound?? I was thinking top 5 pick in the draft..

  • IHaveADream

    Pacers aren’t making the playoffs.
Heat (LeBron’s the regular season winning machine)
Magic (Deeper than every team except Celtics and Lakers)
Celtics (could care less about having the best record)
    Bulls
    Bucks
    Hawks
    Bobcats
    Knicks

  • http://www.wimp.com/selfteaching/ Toni Kukoc

lol @ Cavs, have fun fighting for the worse record in the NBA with Raptors despite your ONE GAME UNDEFEATED START

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@ Ihavea, I think the (healthy) Pistons are better than the Bobcats and Knicks..
