David Stern Wants NBA Player Salaries Cut by One-Third

One-third? Wow. This is the type of report that keeps Billy Hunter up at night. From the AP: NBA commissioner David Stern says there was no quantifiable progress in collective bargaining talks over the summer, and the league has revealed it is seeking a reduction in player salary costs by about one-third. Stern says the league wants player costs to drop by about $750-800 million. Deputy commissioner Adam Silver says the NBA currently spends about $2.1 billion annually in player salaries and benefits.”

    I’m all for it…as long as ticket pricess are reduced as a result as well. Those savings can’t go back to the owners.

    I read a an article a little while ago that talked about players salaries. Asking the question, should we go back to the day that these players make more than the average person for playing a sport, or more than the average business. You can argue that they are business, but theyre are not…the bodys that play sports attached to faces that sell products. Not a business. My biggest argument againt them taking a pay cut is the idea of profit sharing. If the team makes alot on them, they should make some of the money..thats the business thought. But if these teams are losing money, shouldnt the players makes less?

    The league is about the players. People love the NBA because of the players, not because of David Stern or the owners. This man continues to do things to try to screw up the league. First it’s the new technical foul rule that must be changed immediately. And now this. If owners are stupid enough to give huge money to subpar talent, that’s their fault. Stern needs to keep his nose out of it, sit back and enjoy the game like the rest of us.

    Owners have been wanting a bigger piece of the pie, as far as revenue comes and they feel as if they arent getting their share. To own a team is an investment. Am I incorrect to assume that owning a team gives you a share of merchandise sales, and other bonuses, and such? I guess owners feel they arent getting enough cash outta this whole thing, which I would assume is the exact opposite

    Damn stern. Owners make so much, and they hide as much as they can, such as network profits. League has had one of best seasons ever, will have best ever this season, biggest tv deal ever. Most merch sales ever, expanding to china, europe, brazil, etc etc etc. Yet, somehow, owners are claiming poverty, theyre lying about not making a ton, thats the whole problem.

    They always whine about losing money, then ignore the television deals, which is how they all manage to turn profits every year. Yeah, they may not balance the ledger sheet with local ticket and merchandise sells but, that t.v. revenue makes it all better. Believe that.

    There will be blood. Union went hard after the NBA pissed them off with their 1st proposal. Brought Bosh, LeBron, DWade and Melo to the bargaining table to show maximum leverage. Now that all those cats other than Melo have their security, I find it hard to believe that they will care about the hard details of this negotiation. They will simply want to make sure their checks come on time. @eboy: That was epic. Nicely done.

    The leagues situation is looking worse and worse lately. I have a feeling things get rough soon. This is ridiculous… A 33% cut is just silly big. Like, joke numbers. All that will do is ruffle feathers among the players and fan the flames of the whole situation… What a great idea Stern.

    It’s probably real hard to give several million dollars to someone, for any reason. It’s probably 100 times harder getting those millions back, lol! Whatchu think they ball for, to push a effin’ RAV-4. They sacrifice their bodies and entertain the masses, they should take a pay cut when ticket percentages team sponsorship deals become a part of their contracts.

    This is just an opening gambit. The league will probably end up settling for something like a 10% rollback on player salaries. They can’t start by saying what they will actually settle for. They’re negotiating and this is Stern’s first concrete offer. The union will counter and they’ll barter back and forth until they reach a compromise.

    Actually I have 2 talk about this… Look no one forced Detroit to sign Ben Gordon as Charlie Villanueva to egregious deals. No one forced Minnesota to sign Darko to a 20 m dollar deal. However to say that you are gonna cut NBA salaries by a third is not fair especially to the stars. The big 3 in Mia is going to make Hundreds of MILlIONS for the franchise and will pump 1 BIlLION per yr into that economy. I just won’t fly with players being exploited like that ESP in a players league. You may say “these guys make millions” ever heard of a million dollar slave? Example: lebron in Cleveland made 62 million in his tenure with Cleveland. Dan Gilbert made 200+ MILLION off lebron. Think about that. Now we want our players and stars to take a third of a paycut? Im fine with lessening pay of the role players . HOWEVER faces of franchises should face no paycuts bc the are te primary attractions. Understand that if they did this b4 lebron a player that made hundreds of millions for the cavs, millions for the NBA and was responsible for 70 percent of the cavs fanbase would have to the FORFEIT 20 million dollars of salary? Ridiculous. GMs and owners need 2 do their jobs and STaoP handing out crazy deals to subpar players. That’s my take.

    See how much money these players make, I don’t see this as a problem. It’s okay as long as the NBA front office and NBPA agree on a way to spend the deducted money. I mean losing maybe $40 mil of a $120 mil contract shouldn’t be a problem. You still have endorsements and it is no way necessary for players to be spending an absurd amount of money on things.

    Im not against lowering salaries but im dam sure the players will fight it hard. Im saying, its the owners fault the players are paid so much isn’t it? They continually through more n more money at worse an worse players and look what happens?

    But at the same time im not really against the players earning as much as they do either, if they’re willing to give it to you then by all means get you money. As long as the players honour their contract I dont mind.

    First, I agree with everyone who said the owners were foolish for giving role palyers star salalries. No one put a gun to their heads. It’s their own fault that subpar guys are overpaid. Secondly, how badly is the money being managed if you can have one of the best seasons ever in last season, yet still be in financial trouble? The players shouldn’t have to pay for the mistakes of the owners.

    @Eboy, homie I will play for the heat during the lockout and all they have to do is match my current salary, I will even be responsible for the oranges at halftime and washing the jerseys. But I will require life long floor seats to all home games as a singing bonus.
