DeJuan Blair Will Start for the Spurs

Pop saw enough good things from Blair this summer to pencil him in as a starter going forward, something DeJuan is grateful for. The Express-News reports:  “At age 21, DeJuan Blair is about to become the youngest opening night starter for the Spurs since 20-year-old Tony Parker was on the floor for the opening tip of the 2002-03 season. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich will send Blair out with Tim Duncan, Richard Jefferson, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili to open tonight’s final preseason game at the AT&T Center against the Houston Rockets. He affirmed that the same group will begin the season as his starting unit. Blair dedicated his rookie season to proving the 29 teams that passed on selecting him in the 2009 draft had made a major mistake. His ascension to a starting spot on one of the NBA’s elite teams is gratifying affirmation of his place in the NBA. ‘Starting in the NBA is a big thing for anybody who’s in the NBA,’ he said. ‘Getting minutes is another big thing, and being smart. He’s giving me the opportunity, and I’m going to take full advantage of it and try to be the best I can be.’”

He’s earned it and he has looked pretty good this preseason. Wonder what will happen when Tiago Splitter is healthy…

  • Robb

Good for him. Just goes to show you don’t need ACL’s to be relevant in the NBA. Hope you’re watching JJ Hickson.

dude is a straight up beast if given the minutes to produce

  • Ben

    ACL’s are so overrated

  • http://SLAMonline.com GotHandles?

Str8 up double-double waiting to happen. Proud of the young fella. I’m a die hard Hoyas fan, but the first time I saw him in a game at Pitt, I was an instant of him. Short of an injury, he’s not coming out of the starting line-up. Book it!

    LMAO @ BEN!!!!!

Apparently he has yet to find a good use for them.

What would dude play like if he had acl’s? He’d be the new Jordan!

Blair deserves it, although co-sign Seth. The Spurs are probably the best team in drafting, Greg Popovich = best coach in the NBA.

This is great for dude. I like this kid, but I’m still glad Bulls took Taj Gibson.

so are we supposed to believe that blair is now a center and duncan is still just a power forward?

  • http://www.slalmonline.com Marcnificent

Geez, now will this prove that Duncan is a Damn center and not a damn power foward, what I been tellin people for years…The guy guards the opposing teams centers and they guard him, been that way for about the last 10 years or so, but yet hes labeled a power foward and will go down in history above Barkley, Malone etc as such. And everybody is buying it. Whens the last time Duncans guarded Nowitzki, Brand, Boozer, etc??? TIM DUNCAN IS A CENTER FOLKS

I guess as far as the ACL thing goes: You can’t tear what you don’t have.

  • k

Beast. Great pick at 13, Larry. Sigh…

Splitter and Blair are going to be the big men of the future for the Spurs franchise. When Splitter comes back I see him starting again though, Blair is great off the bench still.

  • haslem

If he can make it just 3 more years in the L that will be a major achievement. I don’t see how he can last much longer than that unless he has developed some sort of revolutionary way of landing his jumps unknown to us.

Anyone who thinks Duncan is a center hadn’t watched basketball the first seven years of Duncan’s career.

  • http://google c_cantrell

^anyone who thinks duncans a center jus doesnt understand basketball

  • http://slamonline.com MVPballer

Just ’cause Duncan plays center, it doesn’t mean it’s his natural position. He’s always been a power forward and always will be.

  • Marcnificent

The guy hasnt played power foward in probably 8 to 10 years look at the rosters, and was only a pf at first because The admiral was there and they did the twin tower ish…He would have been center on any other team….So I guess Dejuan Blair is the starting center this year and Duncans the PF…LOL, wow…But I just dont understand basketball so….
