Did the Nets Tank Last Season?

Chuck seems to think they did, but according to Marv Albert, they were just simply awful. Fox Sports has the quotes: “They tanked it last season,’ said Barkley, who is now a TNT analyst. ‘That team has some good players, but they tanked it to get the No. 1 pick.’ If that was the Nets’ plan, it didn’t work. They finished the regular season with the NBA’s worst record, but lost out on the first pick to the Wizards in the draft lottery. They settled for the third selection, which meant no John Wall, and instead picked Derrick Favors, a power forward out of Georgia Tech. The Nets started the 2009-10 season with a record-breaking 18 consecutive losses, but avoided total infamy by not being the worst team in NBA history — an honor that still belongs to the 1972-73 76ers, who finished the season 9-73. ‘If you just go out there and compete on a nightly basis, it’s impossible to only win 12 NBA games,’ added Barkley …  Marv Albert, who is a part-time broadcaster for the Nets on YES, defended the team from the tanking charge. ‘Players could care less about the next season,’ Albert said. ‘It was more of a case that they were so bad that psychologically they got despondent, (so) that you just go through the motions.’”

They wish they could blame it on tanking. I would if I could.

what is with everyone and the phrase “could care less”… it’s “couldn’t care less” – indicating that they don’t care at all… the writers on this site consistantly get it wrong

^and so do half the people being quoted

I really don’t think you can convince an entire team of competitive athletes to throw a season, let alone a single game. Take a look at the emotion in the sideline snapshots, they’re ball players, not actors.

I’m a Nets fan who watched 70-80% of games last season. They didn’t tank last season – they were just goddamn awful. Goddamn awful.

People who say “could care less” couldn’t care less what they say.

Of course they didn’t tank it. They just f****n sucked let’s b honest bout it. They were horrible and atrocious…Now the knicks DID tank it. From the players all the way up 2 ownership n an effort 2 get lbj, bosh or wade. And it was dam right hilarious when all 3 gave the knicks the finger. That was awesome. @ least my bulls remained competitive while slashing the payroll, including making the playoffs. Don’t get me wrong tho. I wish 2 c the knicks compete, but not by tanking on purpose a couple seasons n order 2 do so. Would luv 2 c that knicks/bulls rivalry renewed

@Hammer, you think the Knicks tanked last year without a first round pick? You trippin – just like Carlos Boozer.

THe Nets didn’t tank. They tried to ball. Unfortunately, injuries got the best of them. No way do they get such a bad record again…

Tanking don’t work anymore anyways. Who’s the last team to have the worst record and come away with the no. 1 pick? Cleveland in ’03?
