Dwight Howard’s Self-Punishment Push Ups

In case you made it through last night’s snooze-fest between Orlando and Washington, you saw Dwight do some push-ups on the sidelines late in the second half. It’s because he’s a terrible free-throw shooter, and this is how he punishes himself. From the Orlando Sentinel: “A moment many Orlando Magic fans enjoyed on TV Thursday night went unnoticed by  Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. SVG said he knew nothing about Dwight Howard’s push-ups in front of the Magic bench after Howard left the Magic’s 112-83 win over the Wizards with 47.4 seconds left in the third quarter. When Magic beat writer Josh Robbins asked him about Dwight Howard’s impromptu calisthenics, Van Gundy’s reaction was priceless and in midseason form. ‘I don’t have any knowledge of that,’ Van Gundy said. ‘I’m usually more focused with what’s going on on the court.’ … Dwight Howard said his because his teammates were riding him about going 9-19 from the free-throw line. ‘Well, my teammates said I missed too many free throws tonight,’ Howard said. ‘They were all talking about how my form was great on my jump shot, but on my free throws it wasn’t as great. So, they kind of clowned me with that.’”

And in ironic fashion, his physique become too big, restricting his ability to shoot free throws properly.

    Dwight is a dork

Practicing his free throws would help more. His form and technique won’t improve by making all those pushups.

I’m glad his teammates are riding him about it. Maybe he will take some additional accountability and do something to work on his free-throws. The push-ups aren’t going to improve his form, but at least he is trying to send some kind of message that he hears them – now he need to practice.

@robb He shoots 300 free throws a day after practice routinely making ~90%. Here he is hitting 18 of 20 in 2 minutes a couple of weeks ago. http://www.nba.com/video/teams/magic/2010/10/04/100410howardfreethrowsm4v-1431346/

Obviously it’s much different in the game. My guess is that it has more to do with how physically he plays and is played by others. Try this: go get into a groove shooting freethrows. Now stop and do 20 pushups to get your muscles super-activated. Now try shooting 2 and see what happens.

I’m not saying that he doesn’t need to figure out a way to overcome this, but with the banging physical players do in the post I don’t know if the solution is as simple as everyone seems to think.

On his fts, dwight has a fake, forced follow through. He needs to relax more, and shoot freely……… The mind is the greatest hindrance to the proper execution of all physical activity……….

if he keeps this up, he may end up doing more pushups than the oregon duck.
