Greg Oden: ‘I feel I Can Be An All-Star’

FanHouse checked in with Portland’s big man: “Greg Oden claims he doesn’t listen to all the talk about how Portland should have taken Kevin Durant instead with the top pick in 2007 and about how he’s joined Bill Walton and Sam Bowie on an infamous list of Trail Blazers’ injured centers. But there is one thing Oden believes should be heard when he speaks. ‘When I get out there 100 percent, everybody will see what kind of player I am,’ Oden said in an interview with FanHouse. ‘When I get 100 percent and I get to improve on the court, I feel I can be an All-Star.’ … Oden, taken No. 1 by the Trail Blazers in 2007 while Durant, the Oklahoma City star forward, went No. 2, already has missed a Walton- and Bowie-like 164 of 246 possible NBA games. He sat out his entire rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee and then came the surgery for the fractured left patella suffered when he went down 10 months ago against Houston.  ‘It’s just tough,’ Oden said of his latest injury. ‘This is difficult because you can’t really know what the timetable is. If I get out there and I’m not 100 percent, I’m not helping the team. I’m hurting them. So that’s what I’m waiting on, to get to 100 percent. But I’m definitely keeping my spirits up, especially being around all (his teammates). They definitely pick me up a little more. I’m always staying positive.” For now, the Trail Blazers have given no timetable on when Oden might be back. They won’t even speculate.”

All-Star? I feel the chances of him getting hurt again are much more realistic.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I think the Blazers and their fans would be happy as hell with him just making it through a season intact.

  • logues

he must hang out with beasley a lot

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Dudes still young and can improve to all-star potential. I just hope he gets 100% healthy.

  • http://www.nba.com/bulls The Babe

True dat Bryan and if Centres like Bynum,M.Gasol can’t get on how can you Oden

  • boggs

    was he on drugs?

They forgot to add the preceding statement: “The kush in Portland is really good.”

Greg’s comeback attempts are admirable. He knows he can’t move like he did in his ’63-’64 prime but gosh darnit he’s going to give it a shot.

  • Noel

I don’t really like the guy but I hope he can get healthy stay healthy and go hard. It’s good for the game to have good centers

i feel like i can be a granpa in no time

  • t-sizzle

more realistic would be, greg oden: ‘i feel i can be a p0rn-star’

  • Robb

    your knees don’t agree Greg

  • Anon e Mouse

    Sigh… Just sigh.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    @boggs: Probably drunk.

I really like GO but being an allstar?
not likely with your type of game(not to mention them damn injuries).
the only way I can see you picked for the allstar is if you averaged 16 and 12. just keep your head held high and be patient i know what you can do just focus on being injury free for the time being

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

some one take the well fare computer the government gave to the coney islander please…

lol at anton and t-sizzle and co sign Enigmatic…If hes healthy it will be automatic

Here’s the inherent problem with this: YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE NEXT DAVID ROBINSON. You were SUPPOSED to make it easy to pass on Kevin Durant. Making two or three all-star appearences will still label you as one of the biggest busts of ALL-TIME.
A half decade of 25-13-4-4 is what you need to be aiming for to even remotely make up for that pick!!!

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

Eh, I feel bad for the post above. Not’s not really GO’s fault he’s not living up to potential. It’s not lack of work ethic or a mentality that doesn’t fit for improving or a lack of killer instinct… it’s just his body is betraying him…
SO yeah. He doesn’t deserve the hate.
I wouldn’t put him in the Bill Walton category though. When Bill Walton did play, he put up NUMBERS.

  • LakeShow

    Dooooo it!

  • http://brimOsOlow@aol.com CHICAGO SAID IT YUP

gotta play half a season 1st greg

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Jukai, the problem is: he was never capable of 25 13 4 4. He never had that in him. 16 12 1 3 is more like it. But maybe we will never even get that. I never saw what others saw in oden, hes never had any offense.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I don’t think he’s anywhere near the biggest bust of all time.
    Kwame Brown?
Come on, he’s not even in the discussion with them. Oden has been hurt, sometimes the body betrays you. That’s not the same as being healthy and just sucking.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

if he’s healthy and stays out of foul trouble he is a top 5 center. check his per minute production

  • kudos

If Oden retired now, Kwame had a better career.

  • Yesse

Slow down there, speedy. Will just have to see and i really don’t expect to see an all star season by Oden.

  • twinparadox

I was gonna say something about people forgetting about how good he was 20 years ago but somebody beat me to the grandpa joke…LOL Anton

  • BostonBaller

PLEASE do NOT put Walton in the same conversation with Bowie or Oden for that matter. Walton may have been injury prone but he got it done in college and in the pros with limited health.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Boston Baller
Walton had one injury free year, and his team won the title with him as the focus. But, other than that, he was pretty much injured his whole career, sometimes missing whole seasons.
Dude could ball, and his college career was the stuff of legend, but in the League I don’t you can honestly say he “got it done.”
One title doesn’t really qualify given all the injuries and the fact he ws the number one pick.
And I think the main connection between the three is the fact that they all played for the Blazers and were injured, not their style of play.

  • ClydeSays

I feel like he’d have to put in multiple FULL seasons of 20/10 play to even be considered an All Star…

  • ab40

@ bostonballer you missed that ohio state florida game huh. he was killing their frontline he should’ve never balooned up to 280. he should go to 250 stop drinking work in his diet and get in amazing shape. he’ll get there he just needs some time.

  • tashay75

Ofcourse he IS going to be a All-Star, I don’t think this upcoming season cause he might be kinda rusty. So once he gets back into the swing of things (strengthens knee) the 2012 All-Star Games will be his show.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@Jukai, Walton did not only put numbers he led the TrailBlazers to an NBA championship, something no Phienix Sun ever did…and he´ll never be a 25 point scorer..he was drafted to be a dominant defensive big and he showed he could be that when on the court..16,12,3blks is what he can do when healthy, you should stop comparing him to KD, that will never look good unless he wins a ship as the paint protetor.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    @ G.O.- prove it!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

If Steve Nash can stay in the league for as long as this guy has done and still be playing at 60 there could be a few more mvps in the offing.

  • Michael

    talk is cheap

  • fiz

Dude needs to shut his mouth already. He’s just going to look dumber by December when he breaks something else and before you know it we’re seeing more cell phone pictures of his junk.

  • Saku 39

The only way he becomes an all-star is if he claims to be half-Chinese. Kidding aside, I’m pulling for him because I think he still can be a very good player.

  • http://www.wimp.com/selfteaching/ Toni Kukoc

Oden won’t even qualify for The Annual Cucumber ASG that will be held in Minnesota this year!

  • http://www.twitter.com/jtrain73 Jono

Yea right mate. And my dog can be the starting point guard for the Miami Heat.

  • teebee!!

@bryan crawford….LOL!!!! funniest ish i’ve read on this thing hahahahaha…keep ‘em coming.

  • JoeMaMa

He can do it. The microfracture surgery sucks, but with medical knowledge these days (look at Amare’s knee now) he can get past that. As for the other injury, you have to realize that sometimes people get hurt when playing this physical game. He’s bad some bad luck. Also, as a young center, it takes time to get used to the pro post game and the way fouls are called. I think that by next year he can be a real force. I BELIEVE!

  • michael

Hasnt the dude got one leg shorter than the other? He will NEVER play an 82 game season, his body is shot, if he can end up as a dependable 12/8/2 guy for a contending team he will have done the best he can. Can you imagine brandon roy and KD together for the next decade? Just fill the rest of the team with decent role players and you are set as a contender for years. Oops…instead they have a permanently injured nazr mohammed (no offense nazr)

  • smooth

i wouldnt be suprised he’s a realy good player mabey even beter than dwight howard but better than durant

  • smooth

    but not better than durant

  • Jumper

Technically, I dont think anybody can call him a bust if he’s been injured the entire time. Kwame Brown is a bust, That n**ga has been healthy his whole career and he has consistantly sucked the entire time. He EARNED the bust title

  • what

I believe Oden was top-15 in PER last year before he got hurt. Yeah, PER is far from reliable, but still… it’s not like the guy can’t ball. Comparing him to Kwame and Olowokandi is retarded. Those guys couldn’t hold a healthy Oden’s jock strap.

  • haslem

don’t compare him to walton. walton won an mvp, a finals mvp, a sixth man award, and two championships.

    I feel like laughing.

  • Ses

ALL STAR??!! He is lucky top still have a job!

  • PapaBearATL

Mr. Glass has to show and prove before he makes a statement like that. Start with getting 10 and 10 and playing a whole season, okay! He will never equal KD, though. It would have been a better choice but, hindsight is 20/20.

  • http://google c_cantrell

dude still has potential to shut all u haters up
