Lakers to Make Pau Gasol the First Option?

Phil Jackson says he may look for Gasol to carry the Laker offense early on in the season while Kobe Bryant (and his troublesome knee) rounds into shape. From the Press-Enterprise: “The Lakers are Kobe Bryant’s team, and that’s not changing any time soon. Well, not in the long term. In the short term, with Bryant still working himself back into game shape after arthroscopic knee surgery, it’s at least conceivable that Pau Gasol could be the first option for the offense when the season opens Oct. 26. ‘Pau’s going to have to take that role, maybe, early in the season,’ Coach Phil Jackson said. ‘It takes a lot of focus and energy. We’re just preparing for the worst-case scenario, and we’re hoping he’s ready to step into that space if it’s necessary. I don’t think it’s natural, but he’s been at that level.’”

I think this is the right thing for Phil to do at the moment, but when Kobe is fully healthy, everyone look out, he’ll undoubtedly be the man in LA

    To The SLAM Brethren:
Look, I love Kobe. I always have.
I do say some things about him just to solely stir up a debate.
Only an individual who does not watch or study basketball would truly undermine Bryanr’s immense contributions to the Game Of Basketball. Tryst AND believe, I know Kobe Bryant is going to do what he has always done. That is, come out, and set the example for every basketball player in The League.
    That INCLUDES The King.
I just like to see the true Kobe Bryant fans sweat. It is truly entertaining.

The Lakers are also going to make Ron Artest sane, Andrew Bynum durable, Kobe Bryant a good role model and Lamar Odom’s wife mildly attractive.

    Sorry about the typos.
    @Brother Jukai:
You know I am wholly appreciative of your compliment towards me.
    @Jim:
    What’s up, brethren?
I’m being cordial and civil with you, for you are a service member for your respective country, and I have nothing but respect for you in that regard.
Now, you can procure AND exact whatever you wish towards me on these threads. But, have you ever contemplated that what you complain about me is almost exactly the same thing that you in fact, are doing. It is said that you were worse than me.
    Contradictory.
I’ve never called you out of your name.
I have never disrespected you. Even before it was disclosed that you are a service member.
Again, you have done all of those things to other people on these threads. I have no problems with your disdain for me. I, honestly, believe that you think that I’m cool…
Anyways, I am on your mind on an unprecedented level, and it is becoming more clear AND obvious that…
    I own you.

@Philosopher: you are straight delusional. Also, stop using brethren when addressing a single person. Also, if you are going to use ‘whom’ use it properly, it is the object of the sentence that becomes whom, not the subject. I don’t want to be the grammar police, but your sad, failing attempts at sounding clever annoy me. Kobe washed up…smh!

@Philosopher: you are delusional. First, stop using the word ‘brethren’ when you are only addressing a single person. Also, if you are going to say ‘whom’ then learn when it is appropriate to use it, which is as the object of the sentence, not the subject. I hate to be the grammar police, but your sad, failed attempts at sounding clever annoy me… Kobe washed up, smh!

    I hope not.
You do not support me, financially.
You and I do not exalt in each other.
    We do not share loins.
    So, carry on.
    ‘Brethren’.
    I am too cool. lol

Hey philo pass the joint dude lol.
And for the record, I don’t believe for a second that Kobe’s going to give way to Pau being the man on the Lakers, even if temporarily. If he didn’t defer last season with a finger dangling on his hand, a busted knee, and a back giving him serious issues, what makes you guys think he’ll defer now? Kobe is Kobe, he’s that rare kind of athlete who will take any, and I mean ANY, type of hindrance to his game as a challenge. Injuries and coaching decisions to the contrary included. Watch. He’ll still be the man on LA.

  • KB8toSG8

LOL at the JT21 is brain dead comment. Anyways, its just Phil playing mind games with his players before the season starts. Last year was the same with Pau too (except that he was injured.) Anyways, I think Pau will will get a lot more touches this season after Jordan left the lakers. (Thank goodness for taking Farmar, NJ!) And no, Pau won’t be able to take us to the promised land all by himself, he’s not quite clutch…..But I love the offense of this new Lakers team. Its boom-boom-boom all the way once Kobe starts getting hot and the 3pt shot is consistently shot by Blake. Talk about a crazy offensive team lol…

  • KB8toSG8

And I’m surprised with this KB is washed up ish. Maybe washed up means getting 8 daggers into your hearts, scoring like crazy WITH a broken finger after reinventing his shot MIDSEASON and finally winning the chip lol. I love this. Makes me wonder what to call LBJ after last season lol. And bosh and Wade too.

  • KB8toSG8

@eboy hater……Kobe’s gonna score atleast 24 this season.

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

@KB8toSG8: mind games…to what end? If Phil is doing it for motivation, is he motivating Kobe to prove him wrong on what he admits is a knee at 70%? Or motivating Pau to I dunno, whine when he’s not the center of the offense? I don’t get it.

Jukai and The Greek had a conversation.
Jukai was humiliating The Greek by stating how PAPALOUKAS was scared to come up here and engage with Jukai because he knows more about International ball than The Greek.
Casey Jacobsen is a fraud, too?
But, yeah, real dumb on my part anyway.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com hoopistani

I’m not even surprised about this news – Pau is the best big man in the league. He can easily slide between first and second option.
Besides, Kobe’s got experience playing second fiddle to a big man before!
