Lamar Odom: ‘There’s Nothing Amazing About Not Showing Emotion’

ESPNLA got up with the big after he was assessed a wacky technical foul: “Midway through the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ preseason game against the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, Lamar Odom was whistled for a shooting foul against Carl Landry. After the call was made, Odom kept his offending arm up in the air for several seconds to indicate he believed his defense was legal and within the rule of verticality, and an official promptly issued him a technical foul. The explanation? Even though Odom’s mouth was silent, his arm was raised for more than three seconds. Automatic technical. ‘That was one of the weirdest technicals I’ve ever gotten,’ Odom said after the game… Even if Odom doesn’t agree with the rule, he does think that the fastest way to a player’s mouth is through his wallet. ‘You have to zip it,’ Odom said. ‘If they call you for a tech, it’s $2,000. That’s a lot of money in America or anywhere. I don’t want to give away $2,000 for going, ‘Damn, I thought I had the ball!’ or showing emotion. I want to keep my money, point blank.’ … Odom also pointed out the hypocrisy of the league’s celebrating emotional play in television commercials and advertisements, while at the same time punishing emotional reactions to the officials by doling out technical fouls. ‘It’s kind of crazy because that’s what people love to see. You watch the commercials and the NBA has dunking, [players making] faces and ‘Where Amazing Happens,” Odom said. ‘Now it’s like ‘Where Normal Happens.’ … There’s nothing amazing about not showing emotion.’”

It’s crazy. The dude is right. Let the players show emotions!

  • Groves

Where Normal Happens!… Lamar you preach the truth

  • Karl

If I was to receive a technical for something like that, I would show a lot more emotion and anger than Lamar’s calm response.

    cosign everything Lamar Odom said!!

  • andy

everyone probably knows this…but for the sake of emphasis, david stern is a complete d-bag.

  • http://ohlaglambam.blogspot.com Zabba

They’re gonna change the rule before the christmas showdown. Mark my words.

  • Thor

cosign lamar and Zabba, the league has got to do something if they want to remain a popular and successful business

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Amazing, this year is suppose to be one of the best in a long time. And they are slowly taking the fun out of it!

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

co-sign James; so many great storylines this season I want to see play out, but this stupid ruling could overshadow them all. New rules stole Lebron’s thunder as the most impactful change this off-season.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

    This situation is beyond stupid.

  • KB8toSG8

Maybe the League’s treasury is empty…..

  • burnt_chicken

Let’s hope that the new Sternconian Technical Laws go the way of the ‘new! improved! Tougher-than-leather’ deballcle of a few seasons ago…

  • J.C.

It’s getting beyond absurd right now with the technicals. I guess they’re just cracking down on it in pre-season to get their point across; they’ll probably ease off a bit once the season gets going.

  • burnt_chicken

The Sternbot is not shuffling quietly off this immortal coil. Much to the collective chagrin of, oh, EVERYONE
    (apologies to Dick Bavetta)

  • The Philosopher

    They’ll ease up, hopefully.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

Lamar is right; the NBA wants emotion after a dunk, but if a player shows too much emotion after a dunk, you also get a T. If you hang on the rim for only 1 or 2 seconds, that’s a T. Shawn Kemp is rolling over in his grave. We’ll never, ever see another Lister blister.

  • MikeC.

Good think Deke retired, or the finger wag would end up getting him a 10-game suspension.

  • Blackphantom

Boy the NBA’s technicals are becoming beyond B.S. Just let them play the game! Emotion is apparently a big part of the NBA, don’t pettily penalize it

  • al

he raises a really good point, they are being flip flopping hypocrits, and trying to spin the media while controlling thier players, tyrantical crap.
Good shout to lamar , freedom of speech is in the constitution, least they can’t take away what you say off the court.. wait a min that’s 3,000.00 dollars please..

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

@al, complaining off the court can run up near $75,000 sometimes. Just ask Cuban…And this entire technical fouls thing is ridiculous. The Grant Hill ejection was Fu**ing pathetic; two guys slap each other out of respect and for fun but they both get thrown out? I can only hope for the day when some kind of Luke Skywalker unseats Darth Stern from his evil throne.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

As much as it pains me to say this… he’s completely right

  • Elvis Freshly

This new rule is pathetic…this sport is about emotion and passion for the game, how can you NOT show etheir of these two. These man are playing the game they love so of course they’ll be some plays where a player might get upset.. they’re grown a$$ men, not 12yr old kids.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

He’s absolutely right. And $2000 for a technical IS bullsh!t.

  • Elvis Freshly

  • JTaylor21

Stop crying people some little technical rule is not going to impact the season that much. This season is going to be one for the ages regardless of some petty rule.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Once again JTaylor, you are wrong. Based on these rules and from what I’ve seen in the preseason, Kobe, Bron, KG, Dwight, and Wade will get ejected from about every 4th game. How disappointed would you be if you were a T’Wolves fan waiting to see the Miami Heat come to town with Bron and Wade, only to have them both leave the game in the second quarter? If the emotions of the game are really restricted this much, we’ll never see the kind of magic that the NBA of the 90′s had. Stupid Stern.

  • JTaylor21

NO superstar is going to get ejected just because of this rule and it would probably be reversed back to the old rule by the middle of november. Anyways it shouldn’t dampen people’s excitement for the upcoming season.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I disagree, Caboose. Whether these rules stick or not, the superstars will get preferential treatment, as always.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Perhaps I was too harsh. Yes, the superstars probably won’t be ejected but what about the role players in the league who have made their living on being tough? I’m talking about the Matt Barnes/Reggie Evans/Chris Andersen kind of players. I like seeing those guys do what they do best and this rule change could severely limit them.

  • MrGoodfellow58

This(NBA) is not real basketball anymore. Too much power is being given to the referees. When Team USA played in the World Championship, you could tell the Americans were frustrated by the contact. News flash… It’s called tough basketball. Are the refs now going to call techs for a player having a thought??? lol. Stern is taking his name too literally. Literally… The players are already soft nowadays, so leave these overpaid fruitcups alone, and let us enjoy what you have left us with to call basketball.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Who Cares, the rule is meant to stop show boating of players and refs. BOOK IT!!

  • Michael Whyte

@Gerard Himself. Shawn Kemp is rolling around in no grave. He’s probably looking after one of his 15 children. Alive and well. Maybe on another cocaine binge.

  • Michael Whyte

Also wanted to add that i read so many people bagging out the NBA lately (@mrgoodfellow), since Jordan piped up (dont worry Mike, everyone still loves you). The nba is great, this season is going to be amazing. I dont hate any nba players either, its so annoying reading haters all the time!

precisely why he’s never lived up to his potential…he just doesn’t want it that bad….but he’s got 2 rings so I guess he feels validated

  • JTaylor21

MrGoodfellow, what the HELL are you talking about? Didn’t team usa without any TOP-5 players beat down each and every european country. Physical play or not, team usa will always beat down those tissue paper soft euro teams. NBA>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>eurosoft ball.

JTaylor, when you start posting do you know you’re completely wrong about everything while your’e doing it or do you reread it later after everyone’s pointed out what a dumbass you are and think “Man, what was I thinking?”

JTaylor – Why isn’t Kevin Durant a top 5 player again?

  • JTaylor21

Dacre, name one thing that he does well other than score points? Take your time I’ll wait……….

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

well fare called jtaylor, you must return your computer.

  • Michael Whyte

    cosign JTaylor21′s last comment

  • KB8toSG8

@JTaylor…..he can get rebounds. And if he didn’t have Westbrook to handle the ball, he might’ve been as good a ball handler as LeBron. Oh yeah, he ain’t an elite defender but he can play solid D. He can also penetrate and get into the paint (not as well as Melo though…..). He’s also still 22 years. Think of how much he can still develop in those 4 years save for a horrible injury? However, one thing he does well other than scoring : REBOUNDING…..

  • KB8toSG8

However, I still think Durant is 7th. Melo, LBJ, Wade, DWill, Paul and KB are still better than him.

  • KB8toSG8

But KD is still 7th best in the L. KB,LBJ,D-Wade, Paul, D-Will and Melo are still better than him.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

…..discount my last comment….didn’t read the article, misread the title….it happens lol, anyways totally agree with LO

  • Michael Whyte

@KB8toSG8 “And if he didn’t have Westbrook to handle the ball, he might’ve been as good a ball handler as LeBron”… stop it. please stop it.

  • rich

i think it goes kobe bron wade dwight paul are the only guys better right now. i think dwight is really slept on because he is a defensive guy. durant wouldnt have won an offensive player of the year award cuz of lebrons all over the court insanity, but dwight is gonna b DPOY til at least 2013. paul i think has led his division 2 quality team as well as humanly possible. wade lebron and kobe are self explanitory why theyre better, u can at least argue hes the 5th best in the L though

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Hi JTaylor I’m back… thanks for waiting.
Kevin Durant is a great leader for that young OKC team. Infact his leadership characteristics carried over into world championship play.
He can rebound well (7.5) and makes the extra pass (2.0) whilst still providing that scoring scoring punch. I’m not going to argue straight up against anyone just mentioned, even right down to who you would take instead of Chris Paul or Dwight (and leave out otherwise). But when I think of the top “5″ I find it hard to exclude Durant out of hand….on any given day he could win a game against those other guys and if he ever wins a series and dominates as we can all expect him to achieve somewhere over the next 10 years then it’s going to be good to see him go head to head at LeBron or Kobe (again).

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Just out of interest his numbers also included 1.00 blk a game 1.5 stls a game 90% from FT and over 50% from the field. So his efficiency looks to only be on the up and up.

  • JTaylor21

Dacre, if you’re going to state stats to back up an overrated player at least let them be FACTUAL stats. Dude shot 47% from the field and 2 freaking assists is PUTRID for a guy who has the ball in his hand as much as him. Also are you just going to ignore what he did or should I say didn’t do in the playoffs. I know that you are going to say it was his first playoff series but before you do remember that Bron in his first series; dropped a triple dub in Gm1, and had TWO game-winning shots. So it doesn’t matter that it was KD’s first series, dude was downright GARBAGE. He’s a great player but there are 8-9 players that are better than him right now.

  • Overtime

8-9 players better than KD? I literally think JTaylor waits to see what everyone thinks, and then says the opposite. You know, just so he can be that guy

  • Morgan

@Jtaylor – according to slams top 50 list, there aren’t 8-9 players above him. Infact he is probably looking at a top 5 place this year. And judging from the comments it seems like 90% of the people on this site agree that he is a top 5 player. Should you really be arguing with people that he’s not.

  • Anthony

Once again, JTaylor is ruining an other tread. You think by now dude would get tired but no.

  • Michael Whyte

im cosigning @Jtaylor. Everyones love for KD is fine. But dont go ranking him too high. He gotta learn to play D, learn to read the floor, and a big one for me is he has to make others around him better (j harden). brilliant scorer though.
