Larry Johnson Q + A

Catching up with the man on our first cover.

by David Cassilo/ @dcassilo

Larry Johnson will always hold a place in SLAM’s heart. Johnson was the first player to ever grace the cover of SLAM back when our current cover athletes were in grammar school.

Knicks fans share a similar feeling due to his famous four-point play, and on Thursday he was back in the area at Packer Shoe’s in Teaneck, NJ, to promote Fila’s re-release of the FX-100 shoe with a special “4-Point Play Pack.” A big crowd of his many supporters turned out to meet the former Knick.

While he was there Johnson talked about the event, told the real story behind becoming “Grandmama,” and reflectLarry Johnson & Ray Allened on what it means to him now to be the first to ever grace SLAM’s cover.

SLAM: How’d you first get involved with Fila?

Larry Johnson: I was with Fila my first year with the Knicks after I had a bit of a falling out with Converse. It was professional. Then I wore the shoe here today while I was with New York. The people at Fila were first class and they treated me great.

SLAM: They’ve tied in the four-point play too, right?

LJ: It was my biggest play in New York. I can’t get by without anybody asking about it.

SLAM: Why do you think that play has become so iconic?

LJ: Because it happened in New York, and it happened against Indiana and Reggie Miller in the Playoffs. In the Playoffs, at that point, you only have four teams going, so everybody is just watching those four teams.

SLAM: What else have you been up to since you retired?

LJ: I have seven children, four boys, so that’s a whole lot. I mess around with them a lot. I went back to UNLV in 2007 to get my degree in communications. I mess around with the team every now and then and show them some post moves, and I hang with my sons. I also have this bottled water company. We do spring water, an energy drink called Hydro Power and a sweat tea. So I’ve been keeping busy.

SLAM: Do more people remember you for that four-point play or being Grandmama?

LJ: There are women 40, 50 and 60 years old who don’t know anything about basketball, and I tell them I played Grandmama, and they go, “Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.” So I would say Grandmama.

SLAM: What do you remember from doing that commercial?

LJ: When I signed with Converse out of college, they told me we were going to do a commercial with me, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. They said they would have me on a gurney sleeping and covered up so you don’t see me. Larry Bird was on one side and Magic Johnson was on the other. They were doctors. They were creating the best basketball player. So then they say we have to name it. Larry Bird was going to say, “His name should be Larry,” and Magic was going to say, “His name should be Johnson.” Then they would go back and forth saying “Larry” and “Johnson.” Then I would raise up. So then I signed with them. Then they come back two months later after I spent the money and bought my mom a house, and they say, “We’ve got another idea. We want to put you in a dress.” That was Grandmama. [Laughs]

SLAM: So, what you’re saying is that wasn’t exactly by choice?

LJ: I spent the money so I had to do it, but if they came to be right out college and said, “We want you to do Grandmama,” I would have never done it. [Laughs]

SLAM: And then what do you remember from bringing it back for Family Matters?

LJ: You know Jaleel [White] can really play. He’s tall, but he just fell into that Urkel role.

SLAM: As I’m sure you know, you were on our first cover. What do you remember about that?

LJ: When I got on the magazine cover, I was hurt. You guys had the magazine out with me on the cover for about three months, and I wasn’t even playing. I did a press conference on when I was going to come back, and you guys held up the magazine, and the first question you asked was, “We got you on the cover of our magazine, when are you coming back?” I was a little offended because I was hurt. I didn’t give him the benefit of the doubt. If you’re on the cover of the magazine, they want you playing. I was a little offended, and I would like to apologize.

SLAM: Do you think some pride in having that distinction of being on the first cover?

LJ: I take a lot of pride in that. I have it laminated and everything. I didn’t know SLAM would be like this back then.

Still remember picking up the first issue at Waldenbooks. I was the only dude that had it for a month and then I forced a couple of dudes to buy it too. Larry was great as a Hornet. I kind of didn’t care anymore when he went to the Knicks. Nice read.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Great stuff, Dave. Thanks. Love Larry’s quote about having issue 1 laminated. As you might imagine, I bought this first copy too. Not only that, I said: it sure would be cool to work at a place like that someday.

I’m a bit of a Johnny-come-lately. My first Slam issue was #12 with MJ on the cover.

  • http://twitter.com/soulonice6 Kenny

It’s crazy how time flies. I remember looking at the first issue way back then, but I had no idea what was gonna come. It’s unreal. Great article.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

I was there last night. I reminded L.J. that (i) he was the first person I ever saw do jump over someone and dunk it and (ii) he went to Skyline HS back in Dallas. He was a super nice guy and seemed appreciative that his impact in basketball has lasted so long. That 4 point play couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy.

  • shu

Damn, SLAM 10th annaversary (KG) was my first. What could have been with him, Zo and Mugs. Big three fo sho.

  • tavoris

    sweat tea? yuck

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I stole issue #1 from a K-Mart back in the day. I’ve bought quite a few since then, but I’ve been hooked on SLAM ever since. And I had the same thought that as Ben… Who knew?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    B,so did I….oh wait.

  • K.a.

Wow, i had to re read the bit where he apologized. Class act. But all i can think now is urkel walking backwards on defense after a tthree trash talking DID I DO THAAAAAT? i also have this memory of him post back injury with the knicks and he got open for this wide open dunk and i waslike OMG GRANDMAMAS BACK but it was just him being super open n i remember being sad afterwards. Him n kemp (who both loss to dee brown in the dunk contest IIRC) got the slam cover curse yall :p

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

E, I’m sure there are very few of us here that actually remember Charlotte Hornets LJ.

    Dear Slam,

You had me at the LJ w/gold teeth cover. One of my favorite covers of any magazine ever. I’ve never been the same since.

Man, on of my all-time favs. I loved that Knicks team so much. No questions about his future plans or coaching? Smh.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Shock Exchange

L.J> and the Shock Exchange spoke for about 20 minutes. I then recommended him a good restaurant to eat at in Brooklyn. We seemed to go back like “fuzzy dice around the mirror” >> http://clicky.me/2WHg

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

My Gramps took me to see him play JuCo ball at Odessa College before he headed to UNLV. First NBA caliber player I ever saw in person.

  • andrew

I remember picking this up on a newstand, just below a citycentre mall in Kuala Lumpur. Long time.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I also loved that Knick team he was a part of. I have this issue also. I think I have more of the older issues than I do the newer years. It was a battle years ago, deciding whether to get those Iron Man, X-Men comics or SLAM mags….of course there was the BBALL cards. Anyone collect those anymore?

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

I honestly thought a couple of months ago: “what is LJ doing?” Thanks for the update!

  • MikeC.

My first SLAM was #3(?) with Starks on the cover. I miss LJ’s playoff beard. He was flatout nasty before the back injury. More of an all-around player after, but the lift and viciousness were gone.

  • http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100000580635564 Bryan

I remember LJ , my first nba game ever was Knicks/Hornets game at the garden with Zo and Muggsy and Lj. I always thought the Knicks underutilized him to appease Patrick Ewing.

Look at your comment, now back to mine. Now back at your comment now back to mine. Sadly it isn’t mine, but if you stopped trolling and started posting legitimate comments it could look like mine. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re scrolling through comments, writing the comment your comment could look like. What did you post? Back at mine, it’s a reply saying something you want to hear. Look again the reply is now diamonds. Anything is possible when you think before you post

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

That prior post of mine wasn’t directed at anyone….just thought it ws funny….you know that old spice ad?

  • goattree

My first Slam was #4, Sprewell and Timmy Hardaway. Missed this cover by a couple months.

LJ was my fav player growing up. Dude was basically the same size as LeBron, but was the best young PF in the game for a few years. I hope Blake Griffen turns out to be a similar player.

Anyways, those Hornets were the bomb. I caught a game in Dallas when I was like 12 and on a family road trip, all the way from Northern Ontario. My brother dug the triple J’s and I was a huge Hornets fan (LJ, ZO, Muggsy, DELL Curry, Kendall Gill).

  • MikeC.

@goattree – living in Northern Ontario has benefits. Clean water, fresh air, trees and rock cuts for miles. But it sucks as an NBA fan. I’m in Sault Ste Marie. Where you at? My wife flew me down to T.O. a couple years ago to see the Knicks play at the ACC. Too bad it was during the Isiah years.

  • The Philosopher

    Look at Larry Johnson.
The King has his build. I’ve always said that.
The King isn’t supposed to be able to do the kind of things he does.
    Anyways…
    Great piece, as usual.

  • johnny

@ BEN – well, I’m sorry that SLAM is no longer anything like it was back then. Its technological now (this website), and that’s cool. But the magazine itself turned straight wack a while back. Not “slamming” SLAM, a lot of people sell out eventually, but the mag today is horrible compared to those first issues. Yall are scared as heck to cuss now, it’s just funny.

  • Rich

As a down-since-day-one Slam reader, I associate LJ as much with that first issue cover as with Grandmama or the four point play. Good hearing from him again.

  • Jer Dawg

I was turned onto SLAM by my friend who we were all hardcore basketball fans to start with in HS. He saw this article about Coast to Coast, with Paul Pierce and Ricky Price representing the West Coast, NYC with black/white photos of kids waiting for next, and 4 DC area kids who got game.
Larry Johnson was my favorite player at that time because I was a 5’8″ power forward who dreamed of being like LJ. lol. But, I loved the intensity, enthusiam, and the game of Larry Johnson back then and I have been down since day 1. I have a couple issues missing since day 1 because of friends stealing my magazines like issue 2 with Shawn Kemp on the cover and the in depth article of his favorite player then, Jalen Rose, or the postal worker purposely not giving me my 100th issue with MJ on the cover. I swear its not an accident I never got that issue.

  • BostonBaller

I have that 1st cover, I was in a smoke store looking for something to read during linch and saw what at the time was an innovative cover for a sports mag. I bought it and sat in a small diner to eat and read and got so wrapped up in it I was late going back to work.. I was hooked from day 1 and have every ish ever put out. Ol’ Skool rules!

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out @BostonBaller.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

He was his best with the Hornets and the injuries came and he then was half man half good with the Knicks. Good to hear, that he save his money, and used his money to make other businesses, because alot of NBA players waste their money then become broke. Also seven children, if not by the same women, child support must be killing him. BOOK IT!!

  • Mike Myers

Proud to say that I have been with Slam since issue # 1. I even had #1 autographed by LJ himself. I said had because it was lost in a small house fire along with some of my favorite Adidas basketball shoes. Thanks to ebay, I have recovered most of the mags lost but no luck with the shoes yet. Anyways, I think a LJ interview should be in the mag soon.

  • hammer

Always have been a slam reader. But my 1st official mag was #10. Pip on the cover. I remember having it 4 like a couple weeks. I let a few of my homies borrow it and 1 of them lost it. Man I was dissapointed. Wish I could have that 1 back…Count me n on 1 of the people who wished granmama and zo would have put their egos aside and remained hornets. 2 me it will always b charlotte hornets, not bobcats

  • http://Slamonline.com ENDS

yall should reprint retro issues I gaurentee that they would still sell if not better than the currant issues today

  • http://www.halloffamebeverages.com/ hfbg

I remember LJ from when I was a kid, loved his grandmama character, you can buy his company’s stock real cheep right now.

  • Paul

Larry was awesome… I remember he was on the cover of my first SI FOR KIDS back in the day also

  • Brickshooting J

They do “a sweat tea” (sic)? Damn! I guess it takes a really hardcore fan to drink that. Is it guaranteed to be LJ’s sweat, or he just endorses the product?

  • abaci

My first ish had GP on the cover #26!
It was later named worst cover, I was crushed.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Funny how he said he had to do grandmama cuz he already spent the money. Too bad they didnt release the commercial with larry and magic.
