LBJ Joins Auction for Cancer Research

Via our friends at Charity Buzz:

To mark the 10th anniversary of Pink Pony, Polo Ralph Lauren is launching its first Pink Pony Online Auction in partnership with luxury charity auction site charitybuzz. The auction will showcase more than 300 unique, once-in-a-lifetime experiences offering bidders a chance to step into the world of Ralph Lauren.

One of those experiences is the rare chance for one lucky fan and a friend to meet NBA superstar LeBron James and watch him play from VIP seats at an upcoming Miami Heat game. LeBron is also offering to autograph jerseys, basketballs and any other memorabilia the winner brings along. Bidding is open through October 21st here, and is currently up to $2,500.

Other auction items include the chance to be Ralph Lauren’s guest at the 2012 Summer Olympics, the chance to ride with Lance Armstrong, and many more incredible opportunities.

100% of net proceeds benefit The Pink Pony Fund for cancer research. The online auction began October 1st and runs through October 21st at www.charitybuzz.com/RalphLauren.

Launched in 2000, the mission of Pink Pony is to reduce disparities in cancer care in medically underserved communities and ensure that treatment is available at an earlier, more curable stage. The Pink Pony Fund supports programs for cancer screening, early diagnosis, treatment, research and patient navigation.

Regardless of how you may feel about LeBron the person or LeBron the player, you gotta applaud dude for doing something like this.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

Dude has always been more than willing to give back to the community……..Respect

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

But by tomorrow he’ll back to being the worst thing since Cancer, right?

  • Brian

    I hope he catches cancer!

  • Mo

    @ Brian:

I don’t believe you can “Catch” cancer dumb-a$$. It’s not a dam cold/STD or something. So thanks for showing how stupid u are. Lol!

  • tato

The guy is not like the best man in the world for doing this you know? These are Tax write offs. Many players do this kind of thing but they don’t brag about it. He’s doing it because his brand is hurt so these kind of stuff helps him.

  • Brian

@ Ho: So you mean you literally extend your hands to catch a cold/STD and it isn’t a figure of speech to show you going from not having to having a malady? Is that what you’re claiming?

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

    He’s such a jerk

  • http://www.slamonline.com jumpman3224

I give him credit for lending his celebrity and time to help raise funds for such a wonderful cause. This is the best Decision he has made all summer.

  • JTaylor21

I bet that you won’t hear any of this on Espn or see it on the front page, the media and fans hate it when players do good but love it when they slip up once.

  • larrylegend

lbj has good pr people, anyone surprised?

  • Mo

@ Brian: Go and kill yourself. Or better yet, as you would say: Go “Catch” a bullet!

  • namik

Ulterior motive or not, if it helps people, its commendable.

  • Brian

@ Ho: It’s catch. Capitals are used to start sentences and not placed randomly throughout text smart guy.

  • Dagger

I don’t know what comment is stupider: the one suggesting Lebron has good PR people, the one insisting that Lebron is doing this for tax writeoffs (check the nature of the charity), or the one in which Brian hopes Lebron will “catch” cancer. Thanks, guys, for for lowering our collective IQ.

  • EJ

I think race played a part on this.

No Offense to anyone, but NBA Players do this all the time, it just certain players get articles about it. Lebron probably consulted his non english speaking Guru and had to donate six figures again to him to see if this is a good business decision. BOOK IT!!!

  • T-Money

Does LeBron get good PR advice or bad PR advice? You guys need to make your minds. Haters.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

If the Lance Armstrong bike-ride garner a higher bid than LeBron’s VIP seats will he label it as racist? (jokes aside, good move for once by LBJ and his marketing hobos)

  • hammer

Stupider is not a word by the way. Just sayin

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Shout out @ The Philosopher and Dagger

  • Big Clover

Am I the only one thoroughly enjoying this back and forth between Brian and Mo?

    EJ hit it spot on.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Whether you mean it or not Brian, your 3:56 comment is such a stupid thing to say.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

LBJ like most other professional athletes do a lot of public/community service and/or have a lot of charity involvement. Very little of it is reported on. Many of them have foundations etc. that manage and track what they do – including keeping up with cost for tax purposes etc. Regardless of the ‘real’ reason, I commend them for lending their celebrity, money and/or time to a cause. I’m glad they do what they do because at the end of the day it’s going to help people.

^ cosign Nupe, and again Brian you’re stupid.

This is good PR for Team LeBron.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign Nupe.

  • MikeC.

    This is all Lebron’s fault.

  • Red

He’s trying to fix his image, it’s good that he’s doing this but more awful that it’s for a personal motive.

  • Noel

To “catch” something in that sense is a figure of speech for contracting a communicable disease, which cancer is not. That is all

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

He can’t join cancer research better than Kobe!!!! Sike, fooling wit y’all. Good look LBJ.

  • T-Money

Red: so you’ve just unilaterally decided that he’s doing this for a personal motive? word?

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

red: your post is stinking the place up, having pulled it straight out of your @$$. What the fudge is it with the comments on this thread?

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

    cosign namik.

  • Brian

@ Noel: Tough to argue with that one. What I wrote was very awkward.
@ J: Thank you, that’s what I was looking for instead of the visit from the syntax police I got. Who knew that would upset people so Much?

  • Dagger

Hammer: stupider is, in fact, a word. Granted, because it’s usually preferred to add “more” in front at adjectives of two or more syllables “more stupid” sounds better. But then most of us are in a rush when we write here, and there’s a big difference between being blatantly ignorant or crass, and making a minor grammatical slip.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Brian- Im not upset. I just find you stupid making that statement. Do you hate the guy? I don’t know and I don’t care. But regardless of who we’re talking about if you make that kind of wishing to anyone who’s done nothing to you, you stupid.

uh..uh…tried to, but couldn’t hate on this–Good on you, Bron.

  • http://slamonline.com Saviour

J, just stop….I appreciate your trying to correct your post, but learn to spell first time son.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think Lebron slept with people’s wives in here. That’s the only way to explain the hate.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Saviour -I just corrected the last part (you= you’re) but my first correction didn’t appear so i repeated it. But then, both of them appeared, so that’s not my fault. My phone’s browser has crappy web connection so.. I guess you failed.. son.

  • kudos

Why the hell doesn’t lebron just donate more than what it takes to “meet” dude for 5 min. It isn’t gonna get more than a few thousand. While, lebron has over 200+ million dollars untouched. Great guy right?!? LOL

  • Brian

@ J – That was a 2 part statement. I was looking for people to call me stupid for wishing cancer on someone and was surprised people would get so upset at me for misusing the “catch cancer” thing.
I also appreciate your efforts in trying to correct your post despite what some people are saying.
You are all right by me even though you call me stupid a lot. I guess if the shoe fits…..
LeBron and his crew Cut me in line at the movies a while ago so I don’t like Him.

  • KB8toSG8

This is a great thing. Pity Dalembert doesn’t also get this publicity. He too gave back to his community and his story really is heart-rendering. So is DJ Mbenga’s too.

    Good job LBJ.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Brian- alright, no beef man. now let’s go back to basketball..
