Orlando Opens New Arena, May Lose Howard, Though

The Orlando Sentinel is talking Amway Center, and Dwight Howards Extension: “There was a buzz in the air before the opening tip, when Magic coach Stan Van Gundy walked out in a new fitted suit and tie, saying goodbye to the mock turtlenecks. It was his homage to the new place and the people who made it happen. ‘If it takes a new arena to get Stan to wear a suit, we might get one every year,’ Howard joked afterward. This one will do just fine, thank you. The question is this: Will anyone outside Central Florida notice? Nobody cares about the Magic this season. They are the warm-up act, the acoustic guitar guy opening for the Eagles… The Heat are the greatest team in the history of planet Earth. The Boston Celtics are a formidable adversary. They will meet in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals. So it has been ordained by the talking heads on ESPN and other media outlets genuflecting at the presence of King James and his noble court. You’d think the Magic would have no worries coming in way under the Heat Index, but that’s not necessarily so. The demands to win within the organization will be greater than ever. And it’s not because they are playing in a fabulous new building that makes Amway Arena look like a subsidized housing dump. The contract extension that the Magic recently offered Dwight Howard looms in the air, clouding the future. Howard remains non-committal. ‘I can’t answer that,’ Howard told the Sentinel when asked whether he would sign the extension. ‘I mean, I love Orlando. I don’t want to leave.’ Um. Sounds a bit like the line we heard a few years back, when Shaquille O’Neal said, ‘Orlando is my No. 1 option.’”

Interesting that LA will be under the cap in three years…

  • JTaylor21

The reason why no one cares about the Magic is because the supposedly best center can not even make a simple hook shot. The magics have to be the most annoying team in the league always crying and b*tching about one thing or another.

I’m imagining an acoustic guitar guy opening for the Philadelphia Eagles at the 50 yard line :D

damn dwight don’t do it to em. I wonder if cp3 went to sleep last night wishing orlando had pulled the trigger last summer.

  • cadmus

melo, cp3, d12.. lebronze cannot dig that..:)

No one is talking about Howard’s extension. Interesting. Hell, more people are talking about Jamal Crawford wanting an extension. I guess Howard realizes that he is in the same boat as Melo. Carter and Lewis are aging fast with all their numbers dropping every year. Nelson is hurt a lot and Van Gundy won’t play his bench to save his life. Yeah, Dwight, I’d hold out too.

@Kap.. i thought the same exact.. LA has a history of great bigs..

Dwight, don’t go down the Chris Paul/Carmelo Anthony path. Be your own man. If you want to stay in Orlando, sign the contract and be there. If not, be a man about it and say you want to leave. His best bet is to stay and have them build around him. Team is just two seasons removed from a Finals appearance. But with the punk trend that’s seemingly going around, I won’t be surprised if he ditches his management, signs with LeBron’s people like Chris did and ends up wanting to be traded to New York.

otis smith will do what he has to to keep dwight. hopefully that includes moving vince this season, and if it comes to it – firing van gundy to get someone who can use our bench better.

dwight looked pretty good with a jumper last night and some nice post moves in his other games, i think he really made some strides this off season in terms of his personal development. its good to see him expand his game

    Hmmm

  • Jake

I’d actually think it was funny if 2 of Miami’s three stooges got injured for the season or the playoffs.

JTaylor needs to shut up and watch the preseason. Dwight has shown some solid post moves and it’s not like he had NO moves last year either. “Don’t criticize what you can’t understand.” Bob Dylan

to be real i dont see dwight leaving orlando.i was watching the game and saw the arena and its beautiful. the weather is great. no state tax. i mean lebron went to florida for alot of those reasons. as long as they keep talent around him i dont see dwight leaving

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Dwight Howard is just keeping his options open. I like it.

  • jnuggz

whats up jtay? there no way the magic complain as much as those crybaby celtics. the magic are going all the way this year!!! i agree dwight does need to learn to shoot though, he should dominate games more than he does

  • ATR4life

Howard should get out, orlando has no future and he’s the mv center. He has his pick of the lot

  • hoodsnake

Dwight can also sign with the Celtics, KGs contract is coming off the books

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

There is absolutely no way Dwight leaves Orlando. Period.

  • stayweird38

DWIGHT HOWARD TO THE NUGGETS PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE DWIGHT WITH MELO AND BILLUPS ON THE NUGGETS WOULD BE SO SICK! THATS ALL THEY NEED TO WIN IS A CENTER!

  • Big C

Any one reckon a mid season trade of Vince Carter and Jameer Nelson for Chris Paul would work? I mean Jameer is a legend and it would be sad to see him go but Chris Paul might get them a championship…
