Rookie Favors May Start Opening Night

Derrick Favors may be a starter in the League from Day 1, but only if a back injury keeps Troy Murphy Out. ESPNNY with the 411: “New Jersey Nets power forward Troy Murphy may miss the season opener because of a lower back injury. Nets coach Avery Johnson said Saturday that Murphy had a “bad disk” and would be sidelined indefinitely. He does not think Murphy will require surgery. Murphy will not accompany the Nets on their upcoming trip to Russia and China. He will be reevaluated when the team returns… Derrick Favors, the No. 3 overall pick in the NBA draft, started for the Nets on Saturday in their preseason game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Johnson noted that Favors might be the team’s starting power forward on opening night. ‘It gives us a chance to prepare because we probably won’t have [Murphy] to start the season,’ Johnson said.”

They will need Murphy if they hope to suck less this year.

Just wish the guy best of luck.

The fall of Troy. Hopefully he’ll be back soon.

  • Seven Duece

Sorry, but if he can’t beat out Troy Murphy regardless of injury, there’s a problem.

Right Seven Deuce, because the guy who averaged 12 and 8 in college must be better than the guy who’s averaged 14 and 10 in the NBA last year. Doesn’t mean a number 3 pick shouldn’t start over Troy Murphy, but perhaps not this one, right now.

Seven Deuce: it’s not the point whether or not Favors can beat out Murphy (who, like “Somedude” said, is a pretty good player himself). The Nets’ plan was to bring along Favors slowly. He is the youngest player in the NBA, is a raw player who still has a lot to learn. So losing Murphy messes up that plan a bit, but we’ll see what happens.

I wonder if NJ could play both Murphy and Favors together since Murphy can shoot on the perimeter. That would be a solid combination if Lopez has to sit. Favors is not a bad replacement for now though. He’s had a good preseason.

I have a feeling Favors will be really good for the Nets, but he’s a prospect at this point. Murphy is actually very good, and very underrated. Good rebounder, decent scorer, excellent shooter–perfect stretch 4 to complement Lopez.

Sort of off-topic, but how come any game highlights with the Nets can’t be watched on NBA.com?

@ Bob – Because Net highlights had been a major reason behind the spike in deaths for men aged 15-27 last season… if the performance of the Nets through the regular season picks up they’ll probably be viewable again soon.

Their 2nd pre-season game vs 76ers was awesome. Funny thing is that people started to leave when the Nets were down 7 to go then Bam! Morrow hits a three 13 sec left, Holiday miss 2 free throws, then Farmar hits a turn around three 9 sec left, Nocioni misses one free throw so its a 2 point game no time out 7 sec to go, Harris dribbles up the court makes a play for Morrow but passes it to Stephen Grahm for three point buzzer beater to win the game. This definitely should of been top 10 on nba.com if it was broadcast!
