Stern: NBA Franchises Will Call Europe Home

Within the next decade, David Stern predicts that the NBA will include a European franchise or five. NBA.com has the full 411: “NBA Commissioner David Stern told a luncheon audience in Miami on Friday that he envisions a five-team European division within the league sometime in the next 10 years. It’s not a new notion, but Stern’s words nonetheless represented a strong stance that the NBA is more committed than ever to expansion and further globalizing the game. ‘It’s a wonderful topic, because 10 years ago, I said, ‘Oh, it’s inevitable, it’ll happen in 10 years,’ Stern said, speaking to business leaders. ‘And now what I’m saying is, ‘It’s inevitable, it’ll happen in 10 years.’ But in terms of globalization, we’re going to see a desire for franchises in Europe – and in about 10 years, you’ll send me a postcard.’ As for now, the Nets and Raptors will play two regular-season games in London in March.”

stern has bigger issues to worry about back home. if anything, league needs to look at the officiating and possibly contracting, NOT expanding to europe. europe has never been about franchises, all their local futbol and basketball clubs are individually owned (eg. barcelona), the nba would not be viable there and the product would be poor if you expand even more.

Stern is losing credibility. First, the funky accounting and now this? The league is “losing money” so you’re talking about contracting in the U.S. to… expand in Europe? Right.

I think the NBA should consider holding summer league overseas.

    What about Latin america?

cosign T-Money. Did Stern not say he was considering contraction last week? He may want to review his notes before speaking.

Again, shout out to The Council on Foreign Relations.
For those who do not know (I’m sure more know than not) Stern is a member.

How bout expanding to freaking China; there are over 300 million people who LOVE the NBA. The league could make three times the money there than in euro.

David Stern should spend time trying to make sure that there’s a season next year….forget Europe. Worry about the current franchises right now.

  • Heals

Last week he is talking about the possibility of contraction, now he wants to expand in Europe with the hopes of a whole division… Dude is a straight mess!

  • thegfunk

Representin Leeds uk. The nba as always been the big stage in the states. Maybe I am deluded but speaking for a majority, it has always been on another level to european leagues. We need to big ourselves up which is happening slowly. But business is business and money makes the world go round.

Contract the Nets, Kings, Pacers, Grizzlies and Clippers, hold a dispersal draft, then see how the league is doing financially in 5 years.

They are bigger problem’s mister Stern…set you’re priorities straight

I hope billy hunter is taking notes on all this monkey poop flying out of sterns mouth. ………. Shout out to. The bilderbergers

Would really love it if this happened this could be the solution to the problem of contraction move 5 struggling teams to Europe where they’ll have much bigger markets.Though i do think they should find another way to improve the quality of the basketball.

That kinda sums it all up right there. What is this guy smoking?

expanding to canada or mexico maybe, but all the way in europe? i can already imagine a logistical nightmare. imagine if john wall got drafted to play in europe. we’d never get to see the new generation play cuz those euro nba teams would suck for awhile and inhale all the fresh talents.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

This would suck for any American drafted to a euro team. Also, travel would be a nightmare. This is just daft to me. Get a team in Seattle before you think about Europe.

  • markojaric

the thing that would kill this would be the travel. teams would be flying for extended hours to play one away game and then back. jet laggggggg

    Co-sign omphalos. Seattle 1st b4 anything

  • Morgan

@ markojaric – there would be a division rather than 1 team so they would fly all that way to play 5-10 games then fly back. It would be like any other road-trip they currently have in the L. The logisitical problems only come when it gets to playoff time where games are only 2 in a row.

  • MikeC.

@Morgan – David Stern invented teleportation last week. Didn’t you hear?

  • Andy

Travel would kill the players. Imagine the Lakers, or Golden State, travelling somewhere in France. 20 hour flight:D

  • Yes.We.Did.

10 things more likely to happen before a European division

    10) Shaq shoots better than 75 percent from ft for a year.

    9) Udonis haslem cuts his braids

    8) Minnesota wins the Northwest

    7) Minnesota wins more than 40 games

    6) Kobe changes his jersey number back to 8.

    5) Manu stops flopping.

    4) a lockout *knock on wood*

    3) david stern actually gets his ridiculous salary backpay (800 million my a$$)

    2) Darko and Kwame win co-MVP’s

    1) In a swift coup de tat of the NBA Dan Gilbert uproots Sterbot from power and imposes a lifelong ban from the NBA on Lebron.
