Thunder Will Let Jeff Green Become a Free Agent

OKC and their young forward couldn’t reach a deal on an extension, so they’ll allow him to test free agency next summer. The Oklahoman reports: “Jeff Green will become a restricted free agent next summer. Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti confirmed to The Oklahoman that contract negotiations between the team and representatives for the 2007 fifth overall pick have ended. The two sides had until Monday to reach a deal on an extension for the fourth-year forward. But barring an unexpected last-minute concession of some kind, Green will be allowed to test the free-agent market in July. ‘Signing a player to an extension is certainly a positive but has become more unique,’ Presti said. ‘We explored the concept and had positive dialogue, but we will have to revisit the discussions in the future.’”

    Keep him happy, OKC.

  • Clay

I think I read last year that Green had one of the worst plus/minus ratings in the league. Regardless of that, he’s a good player. Oklahoma City may lose him because some teams in the league enjoy overpaying. Hopefully they hold on to him.

love him…. but no loss. start Serge at PF and now you have a solid defensive lineup. Collison backing him up.

  • Morgan

cosign Clay and Eboy. Hopefully Green has a big-contract-type-year and helps OKC get further into the playoffs because this team is fun to watch…even for a Laker fan

already got 2 players in durant and westbrook but this is the glaring prob with the thunder, they dont seem like the type of team willing to spend and they are already in a small market. they need to try to model after the spurs, another small town team.i dont know if this team can ever win a championship but eventually they will have to pay up

  • tRay

^^ I agree he will help with his length and as a Laker fan that team is hella fun to watch.

Urm, you mentioned that the Thunder need to model themselves after the Spurs. (Which they due, hence all the ex-Spurs management that exist within the OKC organization) yet you mention that they need to spend. Spurs have a tradition of being tight with their money especially regarding non-star players. They understand that talent is abundant in the NBA and that it’s more important to find players who are hungry and talented than overpaying 2nd tier players. If it wasn’t for the fact that Timmy’s career is near it’s end Holt and Co wouldn’t have allowed the splurge the past two years.

If some team is going to overpay him then they have to let him walk. I’ve watched quite a few Thunder games and when he’s on he’s good, but when he’s off he’s really bad and its usually more of the latter.

Anytime he touches the ball he shoots it like he thinks he’s not going to get it back. And he shoots too many 3 pointers.

Of course he’s still young, but I think a core of Durant, Westbrook, Harden and Ibaka is good to build on.

i wrote about this in my “Let’s Change the Conversation” blog. I also pointed out that GSW could be a problem.
In case y’all want to re-read it.

Ideally, Green would be their sixth man backing up the 3 and the 4.

^^ yes T. He would fit nicely there. OKC lacks scoring punch from the bench. Plus Ibaka and Krstic provides more defensive approach. Though I like Green, and I want him in OKC, he’s no more than 10 mil a year. 8-9 maybe?

    Easily replaceable.

  • unrel

    jeff green isn’t a 3rd option, anyway…

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com CHICAGO SAID IT YUP

first of all NOBODY is going to OKC as a free agent. nobody good anyhow. so they have to build through the draft which they have done well.Remember the spurs made some great/lucky draft picks late 1st and 2nd and got guys like manu and parker.if they ever want to be a championship level team they will have to keep the players they draft

A lot of people in here love the way the Spurs do buisiness in a small market which is great. But what people don’t realize is that the Lakers front office of Jerry/Jim Buss, and Mitch Kupchak do a great job also. A lot of people are going to say “Well they play in the #2 media market and can just buy talent” which isn’t completely true. Kobe is the highest paid player in the league because he’s been with them his entire career and the way the CBA is currently setup and with the “Birds rights” that allow teams to sign players for max contracts and go over the salary cap and pay the luxury tax. Same goes for the Lakers other high paid players with Gasol, Bynum, and Odom. The rest of the team and bench of Fisher, Brown, Blake, Walton, Vujacic, Ratliff, Caracter, Barnes and Ebanks. Make no more than $5 million. Yes Luke Walton is overpaid and did not deserve the extension and money he got, the same goes for Sasha Vujacic. The point is what makes the Lakers argueably the best front office & organization is that we play in the # 2 media market and have the leagues highest payroll but we aren’t like Knicks who for years were reckless and overpaid for garbage players and had the leagues highest payroll and were missing or barely making the playoffs.

Let the market dictate his value, and dont overpay

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Slide Durant to small forward, Ibanka starts at PF, and have Harden start at sg. Switch up the defensive assignments so Harden guards the small forward depending on who they play, and use the money saved on a good rotation player and the Thunder are not any less of a force without Green. But the chemistry Durant and Green has is going to be hard to replace.

Ibaka needs to learn to catch a ball first. terrible hands. also: jj hickson

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@Betcats, slide Durant to SF?! yeah cause hes been playin what position? you´ve not been payin attention

  • BRAVO

JEFF GREEN PLS LEAVE THAT TEAM. YOUR SKILLS WILL B MUCH BETTER IF YOU WERE COME TO TORONTO. WE PAY YOU BIG BIG BUCKS! NOT LIKE MILWAUKEE!
