Allen Iverson Misses Flight To Turkey

AI was supposed to fly to Europe on Friday but missed his flight, causing Besiktas to delay its press conference. From Philly.com: “Former 76ers star guard Allen Iverson was scheduled to depart for Istanbul, Turkey today. Iverson signed a 2-year/$4 million deal last week. Just now, while waiting for Doug Collins at the Wells Fargo Center, this news came from Twitter. From @ismailsenol: ‘Besiktas Cola Turka’s Allen Iverson missed his flight to Istanbul and his arrival delayed to Monday.’ And then this a few minutes later: ‘Besiktas board announced that they delayed the big public press conference to a further date.’”

He had to practice — what’s the big fuss?

  • Bear

    Wow…great start Iverson.

  • The Wize

    We’re talking about a flight. A flight. Not a game, a flight…

  • neaorin

If this was the game, the actual game… but we’re talking about the press conference right now.

  • hoodsnake

    A legendary start…

  • Nashty

not a game, not a game that I go out there and just die for…, not a game, but we’re talking about a flight?!? How silly is that, man?

  • IAMORANGE4VER

LOL at some of the comments.

  • MikeC.

Well done gentlemen. I had a lot of excellent practice-related jokes to crack, but you guys all got out of bed earlier than me. It’s the early riser that cracks the freshest jokes on SLAM.

Somewhere out there, Greek dude is reading this and shaking his corn-rowed head.

Got a title for an A.I. sitcom, “Iverson, you can’t make this sh*t up!”.

Well, I guess I won’t be making any jokes on this one.

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

Wait, he misses his flight so his next one is… two days later? He can’t get an earlier flight?
I think Iverson needs his own comedic sitcom theme music whenever he does something

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

lol at everyone, mainly nickdaquick, and of course AI

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

    Saw it coming.

  • The Philosopher

This is one of the reasons why I never liked Iverson. He never respected the game. He never respected himself.
We want to see a guy make a living, but he does not care, even though he says he does. How can we root for a guy who doesn’t care?
Allenp asks how can a man cry on stage if he does not care.
    I’ll say this, Allenp;
I am not calling Iverson a crack head, but he keeps doing things that make me wonder.
And, crack heads have a tendency to cry and put on a show in public when they have their “moment of clarity”, just to get sympathy.
Let us see who he blames this time.

  • ciroqobama

    Wow what a bum

  • mp73

Isn’t any wonder he got blacklisted from the NBA?

  • The Philosopher

I’ll go out on a limb and predict that he doesn’t play out that contract.

  • kos87

    LOL!
Where is the Greek dude when you need him haha…

  • RedRum

just a reminder… european teams run two-a-day practice systems… not one, two! I am sure AI will reduce it for two-a-week for himself.

  • http://sjfdklf.com Jukai

The Philosopher: That’s jumping the gun a bit. AI has a bold history of f*cking up, but we don’t actually know why he was delayed. For all we know, it was something simple like massive, unavoidable traffic. You’ve never missed a flight before?

  • Dan Druff

Iverson has enough cheddar to just chill. He don’t need the nba, he don’t need China, he don’t need Turkey. He got a life contract w/ Reebok, right? He’s straight. This is sad, though. one of the g.o.a.t.s goin out like this. It don’t do nothing but adds to his legend and his mystique, though.

  • The Philosopher

    Jukai:
Maybe you’re right. I hope you are.
But, at the same time, there are still people who are giving him the benefit of the doubt on the Philadelphia quagmire.
I hope I’m wrong about how I see this, because Iverson is a pleasure to watch on the court when he’s right. Even in his decaying state.
It is just that there are too many times where this kid just sh1ts on the game, and then blames everybody else when he gets ridiculed.

  • The Philosopher

And, Dan Druff now has the g.o.a.t. user name.

  • Chris

Jukai; if you were going to a prospective employer, or for your first day of work, wouldn’t you make entirely sure that you made that flight, out of respect?
Isn’t it check-in 3 hours before departure for int’l flights? Could Iverson not get up earlier to avoid traffic, or whatever situation, because he happens to have pride and respect at turning up on time?

That said, of course he has no respect. He did the fitst press conference, a 30-something man, in a t-shirt.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

This is exactly why he demanded to include max 1% fine.

  • flipnoyce

He just don’t want to show up for practice, arriving on time would be the exact opposite of what he is trying to accomplish. And that’s why he doesn’t have an NBA job. Love his game but the way he carry himself outside is just plain stupid. You aint No young buck anymore AI grow the **** up or just retire.

  • http://sjfdklf.com Jukai

@The Philosopher: No one should give him a pass for the Phili thing, especially after the nightclub incident. The Memphis gig was totally his fault, and the Detroit thing was half his fault too. He did it to himself.
That doesn’t mean that missing a flight should be something we should automatically assume was his fault. Don’t jump the gun on this.
@Chris: Yes. Yes I would. But I’ve missed a job interview because of a late flight. I thought I had everything under control but got a late start and hit massive traffic. I arrived 20 minutes before my flight left and they wouldn’t let me board. And that was a domestic flight. You can f up and it not be a sign of disrespect.
That all being said, I’m not discounting the fact that Iverson just got a late start then realized he wasn’t going to make it and said ‘f it’ then decided to wait till Monday because that was the best first class flight and not the earliest.
I’m just saying that things aren’t always his fault.

  • The Philosopher

I really hope you’re right, man.

  • The Philosopher

He must have known that he was due to catch this flight, no?
He’s been at this since he was young enough to get a pass.
Should not he have been better prepared? There should be no way he missed that flight outside of extraordinary circumstances. Circumstances that would have come out by now.

  • http://fdsjklf.com Jukai

The Philosopher: I once again ask you, have you never missed a flight? Something as simple as a misconfigured alarm clock, a massive traffic jam/detour or even some sort of misinformation could have caused it.
And I’m not saying Iverson simply didn’t sleep in last minute and take his sweet time getting there, or not know the gates closed a certain time before closing. Hell, we all know Iverson’s track record, it certainly doesn’t help him. All I’m saying is that we DON’T know what happened, so there’s no reason to shun Iverson at this point.
More information will certainly come out over this.

  • The Philosopher

    Jukai:
I am the type of individual who will show up for a flight hours in advance. I am wired that way. I am prepared for the variables you listed. I can say with pride that I have never missed a flight.
And again, he has been at this too long to misconfigure an alarm clock, or be ill prepared for a traffic jam. This kid is world wide, you know?
    I’m positive that you know.
And, if something serious was going on, by now it should have been common knowledge, no?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

SO I guess he just maxed out his 1% fine total?

  • http://fdsjklf.com Jukai

The Philosopher: Iverson is pretty well guarded. I doubt if something major went on, we’d have any clue.

  • Yesse

Looks like Iverson is still the same. Hope he would be the same in the court too.

  • The Philosopher

We know about everything else, though, Jukai.

  • ClydeSays

I’m willing to believe AI just got delayed or whatever, but can’t he just jump on the next flight? He can probably afford the upcharge. Most people who miss the first day of a new job generally get a phone call telling them not to show up at all.

  • http://hibachisabas.blogspot.com/ Toni Kukoc

    “Great Success”

    oh thats Borat, my bad…

  • http://fdsjklf.com Jukai

The Philosopher: Do you know exactly what was wrong with Iverson’s daughter, Philosopher?

  • http://fdsjklf.com Jukai

@ClydeSays: That sort of bothers me more than AI missing the flight in general. But I’ll wait to withhold judgment until more information comes out. I’ve embarrassed myself before by jumping to conclusions about Chris Bosh.

  • The Philosopher

    Jukai:
God probably doesn’t know what’s wrong with Iverson’s daughter.

  • The Philosopher

And, when I say “everything else”, I mean the bar fights, the drinking, the fake illness with his child, the party afterward, the women he and Jay Z has bedded.
All of that. All of that which some consider major.

  • Chris

@Jukai; I understand there are variables.

You’d have to be made of stone though to admit you didn’t roll your eyes when you saw the headlines.

From what I have seen of him, he does get a bad rep, and he seems like a genuine guy.
But with that comes genuine….ly stupid sometimes, because he does nothing to try and alter the perception of him.
Should he care what others think? I know he doesn’t.
I know he just ‘does his thing’.

Maybe there is a reason, that would make us all shut up.
Or maybe, it is Allen Iverson, chapter 2939749.

Hardly a vote of confidence for his new employers.

  • http://simonlawy888.blogspot.com Simon Lawy

@The Philosopher, you’re one helluva loser, now shut da F**K up

  • The Philosopher

    @Simon:
    You love me…

  • Towelie

    Iverson being Iverson. hahah

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

    He’s already quit on them.

  • http://ohlaglambam.blogspot.com Zabba

Geez, ain’t anybody ever misses a flight before?

  • jufu

and naturally, with the first fail-proof situation he gets in years, he fails in the one possible way.

  • rikson

Stop defending an a**hole, just because he played good basketball!

  • James aka…

The think about missing flights though is that the rules about boarding times changed a decade ago, and he’s for certain taken flights since then. Maybe he’s been given passes on domestic lates, but this being an international, they wouldn’t take the chance. Maybe he just thought he could get on because everyones always let him, assuming he made it before it actually took off.
