Amar’e Stoudemire: Knicks Lack Winning Attitude

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

It has finally dawned on Amar’e Stoudemire that he now, in fact, plays for the New York Knickerbockers. This miserable reality can’t be avoided, not even for a guy with $100 million coming to him.

The Knicks — a team Stoudemire declared was “back” this summer — fell to 3-7 last night, falling at home to the Rockets. It was the team’s fifth consecutive defeat.

Following the demoralizing loss, Zags Blog captured the quotes from a dejected Amar’e:

“It’s a foreign land for me right now,” said Stoudemire, whose team has dropped five straight to fall to 3-7 and is about to embark on a brutal four-game Western swing.

“I’m not sure if it’s the fact of maybe a winning mentality has never been here,” said Stoudemire, who scored 25 points on 10 of 19 shooting. “I’m used to winning. I’m used to talking about winning and having that confidence toward winning. We just can’t have guys complacent and comfortable with losing. I keep saying that.”

Ten games into what was supposed to be a turn-around season, some in the NY media are already wondering if it’s time to start thinking about firing Mike D’Antoni.

Welcome to the Big Apple, Amar’e. This is what you signed up for.

I wonder if he really felt his signing alone would be enough to catapult this inept franchise back to what used to be it’s winning ways? Must have hurt for him to watch the Suns beat the Lakers without him last night

  • amir

    at least he cares..

  • basketblogger

the first couple of wins were cute… knicks are another superstar or season away from playoff contention

  • letsmotor

d’antoni needs to go. they need a coach who gives a damn about defense.

  • http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/ Anthony

Can someone give the coaching job to Charles Oakley already ?

  • Justin

Yeah, blame D’Antoni. Typical when a team doesn’t have talent that people think it’s the coach’s fault. Phil Jackson and Pat Riley couldn’t coach this team to 22 wins.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Bottom line, the Knicks really miss Ronny Turiaf. Also, I’m sick of the way they play offensively, and Felton needs to step up more as a floor general by talking to his teammates on the floor (a la Billups) to help get them in better position to score easier baskets. Well, at least Landry Fields is showing to be a great pick.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

Perhaps Amare should not let another Pforward drop 31 and 31 on him them. ZING

  • MUBWAR

It just got to you huh, after spending a few mil this summer. I believe STAT only sign that contract because of the money, he didn’t really care where he was going. Reality Check Stat now go out there and show us why your deserve 244 000 a game.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Co-sign justin. And getting rid of D’Antoni would put NY in rebuilding mode once again, cause mike had his greasy fingerprints all over this masterpiece. What they need is a time machine. Now listen…

  • edsel

please bring melo and cp3 to ny. pleeeaaaase!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Another thing, Anthony Randolph needs to man up and stop hanging around behind the three point line, and just focus on rebounding the ball, being an offensive garbage man, and playing solid defense. Baby steps!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Last shot – Felton is NOT showing to be a leader right now. He plays more like a rookie than Landry Fields.

  • logues

amare: u lack a defensive attitude, and maybe if u played some d, that would translate to the rest of the team and maybe u could win more games.

  • rainman

Well STAT, u being eaten up by players like KEVIN LOVE(31 and 31 anyone?) and Luis Scola sure doesnt help now does it?

shoulda stayed with my Suns, even when u were being eaten by the Big out there, u at least had a competitive team, that woulda been TRUE contenders with u there this year.

u picked the money over winning, ur own fault dude, u had it coming.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Bitter Suns fans need to get over it.

  • All Day

Amare, you’re the highest paid player on the team, so you should be the leader of that team. It’s your responsibility to develop a winning attitude with your teammates. It starts with you, bro! Real leaders don’t complain to the media about their team, they address the situation behind closed doors. It’s clear to me that you’re not a leader and I don’t think you want the responsibility of being a team leader.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Really? The Knicks don’t have a winning attitude. Damn, the only thing “back” is the Knicks grossly overpaying players who can’t do squat for them.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

I’d love to see Oak coach these Knicks. “Dolan, trade all of them. Get me Ron Artest, Matt Barnes, Shane Battier and a big ol’ stick. We’re going to the conference finals by fair means or fouls.”

  • cklyn sazer

every year i see the jazz with guys who fly under the radar (the same radar that walsh missed b jennings btw) and they play hard and are coached on both sides of the ball, mike antoni is a joke- he hasnt won anything as a coach or player in the nba w/out steve nash. he is an asst at best (ask coach k) keep it real he and donnie are giving us the same crap that all the others not named pat or jeff has given us in recent memory and both of those guys preach defense first and defense wins titles offense wins coach of the year and mvps (biggest joke that sloan never got that c o y award)

  • B-BallMaestro

Amare is a pretender to the throne.

Not only does he play no defense or rebound, but he also get’s mauled by the likes of Louie Scola, Kevin Love, while the Knicks blow 20 point leads and lose to inferior teams at home.

Plus, didn’t I see Amare jack up meaningless shots last night at the games close?

Now who’s playing with the losing attitude?

    Amare’s a punk!!

  • wall-e

What he really lacks is teammates who pass him the ball. Watching the Knicks is extremely frustrating because you have a whole bunch of selfish players like chandler, felton, douglas, etc trying to go one on one every play.

  • KH10

as a lifelong suns fan, I am happy to say it couldn’t have happened to a bigger douche. STAT wanted to move to the big city and become a big name on Twitter and TMZ, if he really cared about winning he would have stayed in Phoenix and had another crack at the Lakeshow.

  • letsmotor

lmao @ugh. a big ol’ stick! haha

  • Kid Dynamite

    Someone misses Steve Nash…..

  • EtheKnickfan

    uh oh.

  • http://www.yamahyouth.com Gerwin

Lol @ Ugh. I’m seeing it in front of me!

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Walle is right. Knicks guards are selfish. Felton doesnt know whats going on

  • 80

@cklyn sazer you are totally right, utah had 7 guys on their roster last year who were undrafted, and they competed and were successful in really congested western c. You can acquire decent talent if you know how to do it, and to be honest i am glad things dont work out just like miami thought. Anti-instant success:).

  • bashmo

I said this a loooooong time ago regarding STAT. He left a near-championship caliber situation in the suns for a New York team with little chance of making noise in the eastern conference for bread. Money talked, Amare listened, and now, he is talking about the lack of wins with the knicks. He shouldve just stayed in Phoenix!!

  • Rich

I like Amare but he has delusions of beings an elite player rather than a very good one. He was never going to single-handedly rescue the Knicks.

  • tRay

Someone said it best earlier that he needs to focus on his defense a little bit more. They are a good team but if anyone who thought Amare was gonna put this team to dominance so soon you must be smoking that stuff I used to in high school lol

  • ClydeSays

Must be something in the water in PHX. Decent players leave a good team to go to worse teams. Then complain about losing…

  • JalepinoSausage

Is this supposed to be news ? Dooooohh!

  • http://mail.google.com Jayo

The Knicks should pull off a deal with the Mavs! They should include a 1st round pick in this deal:

    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=37khmy7

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Everyone criticizing amares move to ny needs to realize, there was no future in phx. Nash only has a couple years left, then what? Amare had some great years in phx, even before steve got there. Amare knew there was no future in phx, so he took more money to go to a team with a possible brigh future. You cant knock that at all. You wouldnt stay in a dead end job when theres another company offering you a better paying job would you?

  • truthteller

You guys think Amare misses Nash right about now? LOL

  • truthteller

But seriously though, I thought the Knicks got Amare to “save” them from mediocrity and help bring them back to at least a decent, respected team. So, what the hell is he talking about?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

the Suns wouldn’t fully guarantee the last two years of Amare’s deal.
Why would he potentially sacrifice $30 million? Did the Suns ask Nash to have his contract tied to his minutes or production because of his back issues?
Nope. They gave him his money, and if he wants to resign, they’ll give him more money. It’s funny how folks just ignore those facts.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

I love the apostrophe in your name but I’m thinking we add a little more punctuation, like an exclamation point. Pow! Pow!

  • JalepinoSausage

tarzan don’t lie not everybody. your’e not :-)

  • Justin

Allenp…of course they wouldn’t guarantee his final two years. He hasn’t proven to be an elite players. He has shown signs of being a very, very good player but not one you can count on night after night. Ever since the microfracture surgery he hasn’t been quite the same player. Nash, on the other hand, has proven himself time and time again and that’s why he makes the money he does, no questions asked

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

so justin, how exactly has amare not “been quite the same”????

  • Chi-Town Stand Up

@Tarzan…I wouldn’t say that Amare hasn’t been the same as much as I would say that he is not the player I thought he would be when his career first started. How can this dude complain about winning when he plays for a coach who doesn’t coach defense?! And secondly, Amare’s lazy ass has never played defense or rebounded a day in his life! I’m not mad at him for taking that 100 million cause i would have too if I knew that I wouldn’t be required to at least average a double double! Kevin Love said something before his rookie year that i still remember to this day…which is that he could get 10 and 10 on a bad day in the NBA! Now if a non athletic white guy who can’t jump can have that kind of mentality then why can’t a 100 million dollar “franchise player”? He has a lot of nerve complaining when he single handedly allowed Kevin Love to have the game of the year so far! Kevin Love snatched every board away from this guy because Amare is too damn lazy to put forth half of an effort to go get the ball off of the rim instead of waiting for it to fall in his lap! Thats why the knicks were dumb for not paying David Lee and overpaying Amare!

BTW…D-Rose is coming for your favorite PG! Whoever it is!

  • MrSuper

In all fairness, Nash has 2 MVP awards on his back. And Amare NEEDS to rebound more to justify his paycheck. I mean 100 mill for not even a double-double? Come on now…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The tired Nuggets are in trouble tonight! Go Knicks!

  • MikeC.

@IAMORANGE – you just jinxed it man.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Luck is the residue of a good design, MikeC, not comments on SLAMonline.com. lmfao

The team needs to hire an assistant coach that specializes in defense.Just like the Celtics had Thibadoe( I know I spelled that wrong).Amar’e can’t fix this team by himself,he needs atleast two teammates that want to win whatever it takes.Knock somebody on their rump when they try to go to the basket. Each man has six fouls, use them. They have enough players that don’t play to use fouls up. Something!!!

  • kendall1

Also,Amar’e needs to get more then six or seven rebounds. You’re a power forward getting $100 million, time to earn it.

  • rainman

    POW!

  • Harlem_World

I said it before and I’ll say it again, Mike Antoni (intentionally left of the ‘D’ because he has no business using it in any capacity) is not the right type of coach for New York City. We hang our hats on the defensive end of the floor and he wouldn’t know good defense if it hit him in the face. Felton is a poor-average guard, how much better is he really than Duhon (who was terrible). Who else does Amare have? Fields? I give him credit, he’s a hungry rook doing his thing – but we don’t have any proven talent on this team outside of Amare. First of all, we need a new coach and new mentality. With the personnel we have, we could be a much better defensive team who scraps and leaves it out on the floor every night – but not as long as Antoni is in charge. BRING BACK JVG and hire Oak and X-man as assistants. Know chip until more talent arrives but we will STOP being an easy out.
