Freeway Q + A

One of Philly’s finest talks Sixers and Iverson

by David Cassilo / @dcassilo

1One of Philadelphia’s best-known rappers for the last decade has been Freeway. Always quick to represent his city, it’s no surprise that he is a huge supporter of the Sixers.

A fan since he was a kid, Freeway has been following the Sixers his entire life. He was there for the glory days of Allen Iverson and stuck with them through the struggles of last season.

With the season opening up last week, Freeway talks about his expectations for his hometown team, his take on Iverson’s choice to play in Turkey and what projects he is currently working on in his own career.

SLAM: I hear you’re an avid fan of SLAM. Do you go back all the way to the beginning?

Freeway: I don’t go that far back, but I remember anything with Iverson on it. Being from Philly, I always support AI.

SLAM: What do you think of Allen Iverson’s decision to go play over in Turkey?

Freeway: I think going there was an okay move. He needs to feed his family. I wish we took advantage of being back in Philly last year, but he had family issues, and I can’t complain about that.

SLAM: Do you think we ever see him in the NBA again?

Freeway: I think we will see him back. He just needs some time to get his thoughts together.

SLAM: Where do you think Iverson ranks in NBA history?

Freeway: I think he’s top-5 all-time. He was a little guy, but he was aggressive. He was always doing his thing.

SLAM: Your Sixers are looking to get back to where they were when Iverson was there. What do you think of their team this year?

Freeway: We got some nice pieces. We got ET [Evan Turner]. He was college play of the year. And Andre Igoudala is stepping up to. We got some pieces.

SLAM: What is it going to take for them to become a contender again?

Freeway: Together everyone needs to step up their efforts. It is going to take a collective improvement.

SLAM: The Sixers haven’t drawn as well recently. What do they to do to get that arena packed again?

Freeway: Iverson [laughs]. They need a big name to generate some excitement. You gotta be doing something. There used to be excitement. There was crazy Philly support. It felt good to be from Philly.

SLAM: What team should we be looking at to win it all this year?

Freeway: The Lakers are always the team to beat. You know with what happened in Miami, Kobe has something to prove.

SLAM: Are you a Kobe or LeBron guy?

Freeway: I go LeBron. He’s my man. I like Kobe as a player, but he doesn’t rep the home team. You gotta represent.

SLAM: Any other teams we need to look out for to challenge theirs?

Freeway: We can’t leave the Celtics out. They are going to give the Heat a run for their money.

SLAM: What do you think of Kevin Durant? Any chance he can lead his team to knock off Kobe?

Freeway: He’s the [expletive]. He did his thing at the Olympics. He’s the [expletive]. He’s coming for Kobe and LeBron. I give him the nickname “The Quiet Riot.”

SLAM: Who would you say you consider some of the best players of all-time?

Freeway: Jordan, Iverson, Shaq, Dr. J, LeBron, Carmelo, Russell.

SLAM: Now switching over to your career, I hear you have a clothing line coming out?

Freeway: It’s called Freestyle. Basically the slogan is like, “Let your style be free no matter what it is.” That will be out at the beginning of next year.

SLAM: And there’s an album on the way too, right?

Freeway: It’s called “Diamond in the Rough,” and it looks like it will be dropping on November 30th. It’s going to be crazy. I just dropped the song “Escalators,” and that’s been getting a lot of play. The whole album is soulful and real. It’s me, and it’s different than what everyone else is doing.

SLAM: Any good features on there we should be looking out for?

Freeway: I just sent something to Rick Ross. I’ve got Black Thought from The Roots. There is also production from Just Blaze.

SLAM: I know you’re a big Sixers fan and Rick Ross is a big Heat fan. Is there a lot of trash-talking about the NBA among rappers?

Freeway: Definitely. Everyone has gotta rep their own city. There is a lock of back and forth with that.

SLAM: I know there’s also a lot of debate over MTV’s “Hottest MCs in the Game” list. What do you think of them putting Eminem No. 1 and the rest of the list?

Freeway: They got No. 1 right for now. The list is what it is. We’re coming for that list next year, though.

SLAM: Does it motivate you to be on that list and be doing what they are doing?

Freeway: I think we motivate each other. Kanye is dropping a song a week. Well I was dropping a song a day during my “Month of Madness.” I’m sure that motivated him. For me, I’m motivated by whoever is a success.

If you havent grabbed Free’s latest release: The Stimulus Package… ur truly missing out. Free is the best rapper in Philly hands down. If not the best… then the most consistant.

  • add

and i got what it take to roc the mic right

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

LeBron/Carmelo/Iverson up there with Russell/Shaq/Jordan?? Ehhhhh. Hard to take a lot of it seriously with that there.

  • B

Free the best in Philly? Have you seen the Freeway/Cassidy battle?

  • underdog

“I go LeBron. He’s my man. I like Kobe as a player, but he doesn’t rep the home team. You gotta represent.” – How exactly LBJ represents the hometeam? I thought he left Ohio…

  • Rashawn

^^ Thank u. Cass is the best rapper in Philly. It’s amazing how people try to count athletes out because they have no rings. SMH it’s a team that wins a ring, not a player. AI top 5 dead or alive.

  • The Philosopher

    Good piece.
I have a lot of respect for Freeway.
He has always worked hard, and he has heart to spare.
He is a good, loyal soldier.
Now, he is NOT the best rapper out of Philly.
    Period.
    He’s decent. Has his moments.
    Kurupt.
    Beanie Sigel.
Cassidy’s humiliation of Freeway on live television was a Hip Hop classic.
Never saw Freeway the same after that.
Not a bad thing, but, an alleged “world class wordsmith” should NEVER get clowned like that.
    On wax, maybe.
    On t.v., never.

  • Hussman25

Kurupt shouldnt be allowed to be mentioned as a Philly Artist as he grew up mainly on the WC… If that’s the case then Jay Electronica may as well be mentioned as a Philly Rapper too. (Then he would be #1) Beans was possibly the best but he cant stay away from the “pen” and legal issues… Cass is nice; NOT A BAD WORD TO SAY ABT THE MAN’S LYRICS OR SKILLS… BUT I will admit; to me tho until he can duplicate his success on mixtapes and features and puts them into a full album and can avoid trouble and issues like some of his Philly Peers then maybe… My personal Top 4: Free, Peedi, Beans, Cass…

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

phil did u really just mention kurupt as a philly rapper? yeah he was born ther but he is straight west coast.and for that comment yourpost will be ignored by everyone for two days.. lol. And cassady is a battle rapper, he was in his comfort zone when he took freeways lunch money in that video(put a beat on.) but as a artist and mc he is not better than free.

  • T-Money

underdog: I think he meant reppin’ in everyday life. Bron keeps putting OH and Akron on the map, Kobe rarely mentions Philly. I think he meant to say that Bron is closer to the streets. / This is what I don’t like about hip hop right now, he sent something to Rawse. People don’t kick it in the booth anymore, everyone does his 16 and sends it to the sound engineed. Sigh.

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out @Run’n'Gun219.

  • B

underdog, free was talking about Kobe

  • Hussman25

    co-sign Run&Gun…

  • Fat Lever

Best rapper in Philly debate begins and ends with Black Thought. Ab-Liva is crazy underrated too. Free is really dope too. Respect to Free, you can tell dude really puts his emotion into his craft. That always deserves props.

  • The Philosopher

And, He’s in L.A., but Kurupt has no problem stating that he is from Philly.
    That is representing Philly.
Tupac is from N.Y. He has said so. He reps N.Y. and L.A.
    He rapped in L.A.
    Anyways,
    Cassidy is better than Freeway.

  • Fat Lever

Cassidy might be a better mc than Free, but as an artist, Freeway is light years ahead of Cass. Freeway has put out consistently very good albums, while Cass has yet to put out one.

  • The Philosopher

Well, as an artist, that is debatable…
    Freeway is overrated.
He gets punked by his own comrades when on radio show ciphers.
Guys telling him to “fall back” on “Special Delivery” after Sigel goes in on Nas and Jada.
Again, he has a lot of heart.
    I respect that.
A guy keeps getting clowned, and keeps coming back.

  • Fat Lever

Uh, Free was telling them to fall back, on the version I just listened to. Call Free overrated if you want, but while most of what used to be the Roc is taking shots at Jay to keep their paper up, Free is actually putting out music that has no shock value as far as trying to go at Jay for publicity.

  • The Philosopher

    Nah, man.
They are telling Freeway to fall back.
    Trust that one.

  • Fat Lever

    You got a link?

  • The Philosopher

I guess rating rappers varies according to the individual “rater”.
To me, a guy who is not taking “shots” at another rapper does not determine how good of a rapper he/she is.
    Nor does album sales.
Nor does the popularity of a rapper.
    Jeru.

  • The Philosopher

    I just listened to it.
Maybe they are telling someone else to fall back.
Who were they telling to fall back?

  • Stepfan

That rap battle between Cass and Free is dumb old. Since then what has Cass put out album wise ? Oh that right a song on NBA 2K11. Get out of here.

    Best Rappers out of Philly

    1. Ab-liva
    2. Freeway
    3. Beans

Cass it doesn’t matter where he ranks.

  • Fat Lever

Sounds like Free is telling Neef from the Young Guns to fall back. And again, if you read my post, I said Cass is a better MC. But if you want to talk about hip hop artists, which is ultimately how people are judged in the music industry, then Cassidy doesn’t compare to Free.

  • The Philosopher

    I concede.
Please forgive me for my arrogance toward said subject.
    Shout out @Fat Lever.

  • Hussman25

Black Thought isnt just an MC… He’s an artist. I dont mention him in my 5 Rappers any longer cause he’s such more than Rap now. The man and the group have evolved into a true “Band”. If U dont know… come to Philly and see them perform July 4th or during their Concert they do on Penns Landing every summer… Thought is in a class by himself…

  • T-Money

Hussman: That’s dumb. That’s essentially saying that rap as a genre is beneath others. You never hear people say that Jimi or the Stones are “much more than rock”. Black Thought raps, he’s a rapper straight up and down. He’s just really, really nice with his. Rap can be done with live instruments and thoughtful rhymes, you know.

  • Filer

Is everyone forgetting about will smith? Hahaha

  • Hussman25

T-Money: In some instances there are certain rap artist that dont necessarily fall into the genre they perform in… Ur entitled to your opinion tho.

  • http://dez@nba.com dez

i hate it when fat dudes stand in the middle of the road. slows down everybody

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

How you gonna be a “rap artist” but now fall into the genre?
That’s illogical. Black Thought raps in front of a live band. And, while his lyrics are nice, he ain’t breaking all kinds of new ground. Dr. Dre gave you the blueprint for 95 percent of most rap on Straight Outta Compton, and Black Thoughts follows it completely, although he does it better than most.
I appreciate rappers who bring something different to the table.

“can somebody throw a beat on!” freeway a clown
