Isiah Thomas to Miami Heat: Enjoy the Hate

Zeke has known hatred throughout his life in basketball rather intimately, and advises the dudes down in South Beach to embrace it. From 790 the Ticket (via SRI): “On being the bad guy in other arenas: ‘As a competitor and as an athlete it’s probably the most exhilarating feeling that you have outside of playing in the Finals. When the building is charged like that, the city comes to a stop, and you’re the hated team that’s coming in and it’s your job to make everybody unhappy in that building, it’s a great feeling and a great challenge when you can accomplish that. The electricity that this team will provide throughout the year in every city they go to, it’s something they will remember for the rest of their lives.’ On the Heat being hated: ‘Hate is not a bad thing in sports. You need the good guy and the bad guy and not everyone can be the good guy. When you have the good guy matched up against the bad guy, that’s what we all want to see. We don’t want to see two good guys go at it. We want to see the adversaries and the rivalries. Right now I think it’s great for the NBA and it will be great for all these guys in their careers as time moves on that having a little hate and being a little despised that’s not bad all the time. That means that you’re pretty good, you’re touching people’s emotions, a little controversial, and you’re being talked about. That’s what sports is all about. It’s not about the good guy all the time. If they’re chosen as the bad guys that means they’re going to be on television a lot, they’re going to be written about a lot, and they’re going to win a lot of games.’”

This is the smartest thing I’ve heard from Zeke in the last 10 years.

  • JoeMaMa

@Eboy: Isiah stopped being hated when he retired. When he bankrupt the CBA we shook our heads. When he failed in his powerplay to own the Raps, we laughed. When he blew up the Knicks and sexually harrassed Ms. Brown, we shook our heads. And when he tried to get back in again…we shook our heads some more. I guess there’s a parallel with the Bad Boys in the Heat regarding hate, but the context is way different. The Bad Boys and Heat would’ve hated EACH OTHER.

  • JoeMaMa

I mean to say: Isiah makes a good point. But it’s coming from a guy who really shouldn’t comment on anything league-related. Stick to FIU, work your way back, get your cred up again, and then we’ll listen. At this point Zeke is annoying, and not only to Raptor, Knick, Magic, CBA (are there CBA fans still?!) and NBA fans. But people fans too.

Hi Joe, I’m pretty sure we Knicks fans hated his guts after the mess he made in NY. Also, I thought the headline was saying that Isiah is going to the Heat. Hahaha

  • JoeMaMa

@LeoneL: I’ll grant that. Different kind of hate, though. Not the “you’re awesome, I’m not…so I hate you” hate. It was the “Mommy, make the Bad Man stop…Hey Bad Man, stop harassing my Mommy” hate.

  • http://bugmarley.com LeoneL

Hahaha.. Agreed Joe! And fortunately, Mommy’s now recuperating and the Bad Man was stopped by the Sternbot from coming back and harassing Mommy.

  • rikson

““you’re awesome, I’m not…so I hate you” hate” -> maybe call it envy..?

  • rikson

    …such a beautiful language.

  • JoeMaMa

@rikson: hater sounds better than envy-er. But yeah, you’re right. Most hate is just that.

  • http://bugmarley.com LeoneL

envy/jealousy breeds contempt, contempt leads to anger, anger leads to fear, fear leads to hate. whatever. hahaha… although strictly speaking envy is different from jealousy.

Could we call Miami “The Sith” if they truly embrace the hate?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    ^ I like that.

  • EJ

I’m actually starting to like Lebron more now that he’s a villain, I still think he’s a douche tho.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

The entire Heat can’t be called The Sith because there can only be two Siths at a time (damn, I felt like suck a freakin’ nerd typing that), SO Wade and James can be “The Sith”….besides, Bosh as a villian is laughable. He’s more Jar Jar Binks than Darth Maul.

  • JTaylor21

This is why I like and always loved Zeke because dude was the one that thrived and dominanted while being hated by MJ and his cronies and the fans. Dude didn’t give a f*ck and stood up to Bird/Magic/MJ when everyone else were bowing down and kissing thier a**. Zeke I salute you and shoutouts The Philo and C-Cantrell.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Bosh can be General Grievous.

  • hoodsnake

Lol @ Enigmatic. The Dark Side is gonna hit hard but nobody outside of Ohio can ‘hate’ LeBron although its not really warranted also

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Pat Riley speaking to LeBron James at their meeting in Cleveland during his free agency – “Something…something…something…dark side.”

  • flippity

I’ll listen to Isiah. He’s done more than most players in the L. I love this new Heat! I’m tired of goody goody teams. Now they have personality and it’s fun to see them evolve. It’s scary to think how good they will be after a few months…and even next year.

  • Martey

So Zeke was probably reaching climax when the whole Garden was screaming Fire Isiah in ten different octaves. That’s why he keep a smile

  • tRay

    @Enigmatic LMFAO

  • http://slamonline.com mason eberle

i hate star wars. But love the heat.

  • ClydeSays

Whatever respect I had for Zeke went away when he took on a ruined Knicks franchise and…. ubelieveably… made it much worse. It could take Walsh and D’Antoni another season or two to clean up Zeke’s mess…

  • cklyn sazer

The knicks haven’t won crap since “zeke” was” tuss” !!! so he did not ruin anything, he made the mistake of believing players would work in a system and up to their potential.. Ms. brown?????? please, laughing all the way to the bank without one shred of real evidence video or audio, just steph getting it on with an intern,, huh? what?
