Kevin Love Posts First 30-30 Game in 28 years!

by Ryne Nelson

Last night was a night of improbabilities. First and foremost, for the first time in years, people were caught uttering, “I wished I would have watched the Wolves‘ game tonight.” This is progress.

Kevin Love‘s 31 points and (franchise record) 31 boards marked the first 30-30 game in the NBA since Moses Malone did it in 1982. It was also the first 30-rebound game since Charles Barkley pulled down 33 for the Rockets in 1996.

Adding to the improbabilities, the Wolves handed the Knicks arguably their worst loss of the Mike D’Antoni era, surging back from a 21-point deficit in the third quarter to win, 112-103, at the Target Center.

Not thoroughly impressed yet? Listen. Love had 6 points and 9 rebounds at halftime. Then, read what the AP reports:

At one point in the third quarter, Kevin Love leaned over to Michael Beasley on the bench and whispered in his ear.

“I’m going for 30 tonight,” Love said.

With Love having only seven points at the time, Beasley looked at him and said, “Thirty what?”

Incredibly, Love was talking about rebounds. But he didn’t stop there.

Nope, Love went for 25-22 in the second half, with 15 boards in the third quarter alone — just 3 off the NBA record for a single quarter.

For many SLAMonline readers, Love’s was the first 30-30 game they’ve ever witnessed… or didn’t witness — the game wasn’t broadcasted on local TV. So, sadly, what happened was something most won’t see again for, oh… a few decades.

The Wolves rode a 55-25 run to end the game. And they couldn’t have done it without another impressive offensive night from BEasy.

Again, talking about improbabilities, Beasley became second player in TWolves’ history to score 35+-points in back-to-back games. Kevin Garnett did it in March 2000.

Most dominant game of the season?

  • JTaylor21

The best rebounder since Rodman and Barkley and will lead the L in rebounds for the next 7 yrs. Looks like all those people talking about DHow winning the rebounding title for the next decade were mistaken. When you’re on a list that includes the impaccable Moses Malone and Kareem, you’re doing something right.

  • Nick

    Much love!!!

  • http://kb24.com Bigi

    LOVE IT!

  • slamfan4life

Why doesn’t he play more again?

  • Robb

    What???? Wow!

  • Skaye

31 ponits 31 boards in 41 mins!Man… what a beast. And he also got double 20+ against Lakers several days ago.

  • letsmotor

31 and 31 is just crazy. congrats to love. it’s good to see a bright spot for the t-wolves.

  • Miamijoker

They wanted to trade him pshhh

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Love is the best rebounder in the game today. No question.

  • Tony

The Wolves didn’t want to trade him…Houston asked about Love but were denied.

Get well soon Ronny Turiaf! smh

  • hoodsnake

    Dwight is worried

  • vtrobot

wow. that is amazing. good for you, k. love. look forward to wolves games being on TV again at some point.

  • -Mas-

That’s what I get for making fun of Kevin and Rudy playing for the same team and marketing them as Gay-Love on the Hardwood!
And to top it all off I fall asleep and miss the rest of the game. Damn it!

  • http://slamonline.com JJAkroyd

Also massive ups to B-Easy who’s making Miami kick themselves for not sticking with a Haslem-Beaz-better centre combo rather than an overpaid Bosh-unappreciated Haslem twosome.

  • Omar

    Amare doesn’t get it! Still!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

I got nothin but Love for you baby!!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@JJAkroyd nope. Beas just couldn’t live in Miami, and playing with Lebron would’ve just added even more pressure on him. Minnesotat was the best case scenario for his career.

  • larrylegend

i always told ya! on the bandwagon is still room…

  • http://www.acb.com A l a n

    just amazing!!

  • KB2412345

i really do love this dude. just awesome. i think Anthony Tolliver should still start and get the majority of the minutes. so much upside. (insert sarcasm here)

  • Atsushi

KG would say “Moses f*cking Malone”

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Have the Wolves learned yet that Love should play more than 30 minutes a night?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

“Hey Kevin, Ryan Jones said great game.” “Tell Ryan I said f*ck you” #truestory

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    My man.

  • http://slamonline.com mason eberle

the wolves need to play him more, and he should be the best rebounder in the leage

  • Trout

Kurt Rambis is either a phsycological genius or a complete tool for not giving this guy more playing time.

  • Jackie Moon

Could Love be a better rebounder than Rodman?

  • http://sdjfklf.com Jukai

    This is amazing.
If Love had scored 25-22, it would have been an amazing game.
But he did that in the second half.

  • the nerve

rambis is a dumbass 4 not playing this dude. WTF

  • http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/ Anthony

too bad the game wasn’t broadcasted so someone could have send the tape to Bosh.

  • bnets

another milestone set against the knicks, and overpayed amare wtf u let that happen hahah

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Amazing… Wolves look like they are getting on track to be a decent team..

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Amazing performance after just a few nights ago grabbing 25 rebounds or so. And overshadowed in this game was Beasley’s second straight 30+ points game, after struggling to start the season.

  • kev

well theres a lot of rebounds to be had when you play the sorry ass knicks.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

That’s an insane statline… Love is legit. And apparently, so is Beasley.

  • The Philosopher

    I’m really happy for Beasley.
Getting out of Miami essentially saved his career, in my opinion. They used to clown him down there.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

@Anthony – no worries, Bosh now has League Pass so he can watch his testosterone levels decrease with every Love rebound.

  • JER Dawg

Props to Wolves for playing impressive this past week. Keeping Lakers in sight even in loss. It’s more to do with Wolves effort than Lakers LACK of effort. Impressive road win @Sactown: taking care of business. Then another great win at home vs. The overhyped NY knicks. Common thread in all these: the development of Beasley and Love. They had an impressive combo attack I’ve seen by 2 forwards. Beasley gets freedom to do his thing and Love does what he does. I don’t remember 2 frontcourt players being so impressive in a long while. Props to Wolves. FreeKevinLove!!!

  • Overtime

    League Pass here I come

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Damn it! I HAVE League Pass and still missed this!!

  • estoniandude

Maybe.. Wolves want to traded workhorse Love for Bosh?! Haahaa.. whom im kidding.

  • iheartcoffee

I couldn’t be more happier for both Beasley and Love! Although I really wanted to see Beasley in a Raptors uni this year, oh well.

  • http://gregoden.com roybot

He’s on my fantasy team and I freaked out when I saw that he did this on Sportscenter. Turns out, I had forgot to put him into my lineup, and I had just wasted a once-in-a-lifetime performance. FML.

  • JTaylor21

Jackie Moon, you moron, how the hell is KLove a better rebounder than a guy who once avg. 18.5rpg in a season, led the league in rebs for 7 seasons and is considered by many to be the best rebounder of all-time even with guys like Russell and Wilt putting up astronomical numbers. Another laker fanactic sticks head up a** thinking it’s the Black Mamba.

  • LeBron de Con

Young Love = just turned 22!

  • whalleywhat

He actually yelled “Suck it, Rambis!” after every rebound.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

    Whoa. Incredible.

  • LBCaliKush

KLove is the sh!!!!t. remember watching this dude every game at UCLA. Too bad the TWolves didn’t draft Steph Curry, instead they draft 3 PGs and Telfair is their starting point.

  • LeBron de Con

Beasley is the Alpha Wolf now. Beasley and Love were trying to decide which superhero each is. Beasley = Superman (sorry Shaq and D’Howard) and Love = Batman. Love prefers being Robin because Robin does all the dirty work. These young men are funny dudes, man.

Wolves got Wes Johnson + Martell Webster. They’re gonna be fine.

  • Mike from Spain

    Let’s show Kevin some love…

  • http://slam FLIGHT 9

This kid can average at least 22 ppg. 14 rpg. 3 apg. if stupid rambis gave him 39mpg…….

  • http://slam FLIGHT 9

  • http://slamonline.com JJAkroyd

I never said Miami would necessarily be the best place for Beaz. But Miami would have loved the way he’s playing right now. Also, playing with LeBron would add pressure? He’s dealing with the go-to guy role pretty well, I’m sure he’d be fine taking pass after pass in his spot.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Nazr put up 22 20……… And the jazz won another game coming back from a deficit….

  • http://hibachisabas.blogspot.com/ Toni Kukoc

JTaylor: I’ll start this off by saying I don’t agree with Jackie Moon.
    Well, ever.
It’s ten games into the season and we have NO IDEA if Kevin Love, who has been known for stamina issues, will keep this up. Rodman had an unlimited motor. So it’s ridiculous to say Kevin Love will be anywhere near the rebounder that Rodman was THIS season, much less for his career.
But— statistically, Jackie Moon is not entirely in the wrong.
Dennis Rodman’s best season was 9.8 points and 18.7 rebounds (6.4 offensive, 12.3 defensive). That’s an insane amount of rebounds. In 40+ minutes a game.
Per 36 minutes, Rodman’s numbers were 8.7 points and 16.7 rebounds (5.7, 11). Still outstanding, and still better than Kevin’s 14 a game the dude is averaging now. But Kevin Love, right now, is playing below 30 minutes a game.
If we expand his time to 36 minutes a game, he’d be fetching 21.9 points and 17.8 rebounds (6.7, 11.1) rebounds a game– which blows Rodman out of the water.
So, by a statistical standpoint, it’s not out of the question to say Kevin Love COULD be better. But it may be a bit ridiculous after ten games. Can K-Love even PLAy 40 minutes a game?

  • http://upandfresh.fr frednetick

Let’s face it : great game but 11 for 26 and some rebounds from his own missed shots. But anyway it’s the best performance for a while. Remember à few ones by C-Webb (51-26) or shaq (61-23) or Big Charles in PO (44-24 against seattle)..

We already praised KL for his numbers this summer with the US team, he keeps on pulling down big ones !!

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

Just when I thought the Knicks were out of the dog house……

How in the world can you allow one man to grab 30 rebounds is beyond me.

  • Kadavour

Rodman was 6’6″ 230? and a physical specimen of a human being. It almost seems like he NEVER stopped moving. During timeouts he was on the bike, and he rode that bike for 2 hours AFTER games. Freak of Nature that man. K. Love is great, but Rodman is in another stratosphere.
