LeBron: ‘I Don’t Want to Be Called a Point Guard’

James may be playing the role down in Miami quite a bit, he just doesn’t want the label. ESPN reports: “Compare him to Magic Johnson — just don’t call him Magic Johnson. Watch him bring the ball up and get his team into the offense for at least half the game’s possessions, just list him at forward on the All-Star ballot. The Miami Heat public relations staff is fully on board. Tuesday night they announced James’ 12 assists in the team’s latest blowout victory (129-97 over the Minnesota Timberwolves) was the highest in franchise history by a forward. Lamar Odom, who had the mark dating to 2004 with 11, might consider filing a protest. James is playing point guard for the Heat and a lot of it. He is playing the Magic role that team president Pat Riley sold to him during free agency. The offense is running though him and he’s taking turns feeding Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and even James Jones, who had 17 points. Not that James is willing to call himself a point guard. ‘I know I’m going to do a lot of ball handling for this team,” said James, who was bothered by a sore leg and had no rebounds, but 20 points. ‘Do I want to be called a point guard? I don’t know.’ Actually he does know. This from a minute later in the conversation: ‘I don’t want to be called a point guard, but I can’t stop it.’”

He’s been handling the ball when Dwyane is out of the game more than any other time in the games they’ve played. At the start, Arroyo brings it up, Dwyane handles a lot when Bron is out. The only time Arroyo is fully trusted with the ball is when both Bron and Dwyane are in together.

point forward sounds better n hes really not playing a different role he is still doing almost the same thing that he done in cleveland its jus that now he has another great player to share the spotlight with.. and what is it with bosh?? big disappointment so far

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Shaq is right, LeBron and Wade are a historic backcourt.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    ^^^^^^^^^
Then I guess Magic Johnson was a point forward too.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^AMORANGE4EVER..
no bud dont try and be a smart ass ok.. johnson was an extremely versatile point who was the jack of all trades and master of none (except passing of course he mastered that one pretty well).. he could score he could rebound he could pass he could play some d.. he was a good point guard.. james is a small forward i was jus saying point forward emphasize on his skills.. he could easily play the point if need be but all he is doing is the same thing he did in cleveland

  • http://slamonline.com ben osborne

I’ll stick with calling him the ‘best player in the game.’

  • http://twitter.com/jew94 Ariel

Then what would you like to be called? You only really have 3 options

  • jtam101

I don’t understand why some of these guys dislike being labeled as a certain position (Lebron doesn’t want to be called a PG, Duncan doesn’t want to be called a C). Does it even matter? They’re BASKETBALL PLAYERS. Their legacy won’t be any different because they were considered to play a certain position. It’s not like if we considered Lebron a PG, his legacy goes from being possibly one of the GOATs to a scrub. They play basketball. Put them at any position and they’ll give you the same things. Throw Duncan at PG and he’ll still be Tim Duncan, so does it really matter what position you’re labeled as?

    Fine … a&&hole!

  • Anon e Mouse

Statement: “I don’t want to be called a point guard.”

    Response: “Don’t play the point.”

  • Chris

Lebron is acting like a real whiny b*tch these days.
‘Don’t say this, don’t call me that, don’t tweet this, don’t ask me this, get over it, i’m taking notes, you’re all racist, what do you want me to do’ blah blah blah.

He’s more high maintainence than a pet.

How about we just call you jackass? Good, thats settled.

  • T-Money

I know exactly why Tim Duncan (and probably LeBron too) insist of being called PF and SF. They have a very good shot at being the best 4 and the best 3 of all-time. Actually, TD is probably already that. Put him at the 5, and he’s barely top 5.

  • Don

Yeah not accepting being attacked racially is a real b*tch move. Lay down and take it man.

Who cares what he wants to be labeled, he’s not the PG on the Miami Heat. Unless Carlos Arroyo is the starting SF? The term point forward is much more applicable.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Didn’t KG refuse to acknowledge that he was 7′ 0″ foot too?

  • rich

actually hes 7`1 so is dirk and tim is 7. guys.

  • rich

guys have been lying to be smaller when they dont wanna play a certain position. scottie is taller than he was listed the guys i mentioned above did it. its the same as ppl trying to seem taller because they cant play point or when 3-4 tweeners try to be taller to play 4

  • ab40

dude’s a baller. nothing more nothing less all this labeling is stupid. kobe had at least 15 post ups vs memphis he isn’t a center now is he. these guys can play 1 through 5 if their body holds up. It’s called evolution and it’s safe to say it’s in sports too. tim duncan is 6-10 maybe shorter. They only listed him at 7 feet so they could promote the twin towers when he and robinson played together. btw duncan always won when he had a big 5 next to him in 07 it was nesterovic?

  • rikson

SImple: Its a stat thing! Take LeBron as SF he dishes 6-8 ass and everybody is hyped by the number. Put him at PG and 6-8 ass is the min he should average… Very, very simple!

  • http://dez@nba.com dez

i tell people not to call me a point guard as well. but thats mainly bc i suck at passing.

  • ClydeSays

    Silly.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

This is why Lebron will not be considered a MVP canidate for the next 6 years. Wade is outballing him and Wade cannot either because Lebron is out assisting him. As a Lebron watcher, His stats will fall and everything else. Heck Kobe might have more rebs and pts and be close in assists per game to Lebron. This is not the Lebron that I have watched the last few years, that I have grown to see. What is America Coming Too?

  • http://google c_cantrell

^uhh this is the same lebron bro he jus has another great player to share the spotlight with.. if it was kobe and dwade instead of bron n dwade then kobe would not average near what lebron is averaging for the heat

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

LeBron can play 1, 2, 3, and sometimes 4, he’s that gifted. Let’s think outside the box, and call him a power point forward.

  • Sparty’s Law

Given the way most people outside of Miami feel about him, I’m sure he’s been called a lot worse.

  • http://google c_cantrell

^haha never heard that one before

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Even if it’s the same Lebron, consider the award he’s talking about “Most Valuable Player”. On a team with Wade(and Bosh… I guess) his value drops. If he wins it this season it will be plain silly.

  • http://google c_cantrell

well i doubt he wins it this season im predictin kd to win it but his value doesnt drop at all just because he is surrounded by more talent thats the most ignorant thing iv heard all day

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

lol @ Eboy everyone knows KG is 6’12″

  • saveahoe11

You can call Lebron the most thin skinned, paper champion, overhyped, corny chump there is….

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

I want to be called a Point God. Matter of fact let’s just drop the point part!

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^YKnot..
ok your jus coming off all stupid so u can shut up now

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

It’s a joke get off my knuts!

  • http://www.twitter.com/chris_griff_3 Chris_Griff_3

Eboy: Kevin Garnett is 6’12″ lol

  • robb

@YKnot how you dare! making jokes about the king oooooohhhhh blasphemyyyyyy.

  • http://slamonline.com YKnot

I know right? I thought it was funny, and I’m a fan of LeKing. Lol

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Bottom line, LeBron is the best player in the league and no position title really captures everything he does. He could play the 1, 2, or 3 and be the best in the league at that position. IMO there are really only two positions in the league, either front-court or back-court. The only difference after that is how the team uses you. He won’t win the MVP this year because his stats will be way down because how he’s accepting his new role. MVP and “best” are not always the same.

  • JTaylor21

The seed just shut ur mouth you’re sounding really stupid with each passing moment. Kobe will never ever avg. as much assists as Bron and Wade would this year, dude is a ball-hogg who only passes when he’s forced to. bron will be fine as evidenced by his 20/12 with only 1 TO last night. By the way, his assists will only go up as he learns the heat offense and players more.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

DAMNIT, who the hell is posting as me?? LeBron the best player in the league?? Only two positions? Huh???

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

well, in fairness, he plays more SF than he does PG in the game.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^the seed..
i have a bit of a split personality towards you..
i wish you wouldnt comment on anything because your absolutey ignorant and usually have no idea what your talking about but at the same time i always find humor in your reasoning and stupidity.. your quit hilarious man but your pretty freakin stupid

  • T-Money

The reason why Bron and Wade will suffer a massive drop in stats is that they won’t be playing at all in a lot of 4th quarters this year. Wade at like 26 at the half. Bron had 20 and 12 after 3.

  • MUBWAR

Lebron starts at small forward and Magic was the starting PG. Point Forward seems fair to LeKing’s talent. And when the post move comes UNSTOPPABLE will be the new nickname.

  • robz

i laughed wen i saw dat word point forward

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    “LeKing”?? oh god….

  • LD

LeBron don’t wanna be a point guard because that requires decision making.

  • The Philosopher

I’m looking like a genius lately.
    LONG… LIVE… THE KING!

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^wouldnt go that far bud

  • kev

Lebron has been a point guard since he entered the league. If you bring up the ball, set the offense in motion, and lead your team in assists practically every night……. um your the point guard. It’s not a slight so I’m not quite sure why he doesn’t want the label

  • The Philosopher

Penny Hardaway used to say the same thing when he went over to Phoenix.
    This is not unusual, brethren.

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

kev: Uh, so Scottie Pippen and Rick Barry were points? Was Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson and Clyde Drexler a point? F it, Garnett lead his team in assists, was Garnett a point guard? CHAMBERLAIN LEAD THE LEAGUE IN ASSISTS. Did he play point?
