Miami Heat to Sign Erick Dampier

Now that surgery for Udonis Haslem has been confirmed, the Heat had no choice but to bring Dampier aboard. From CBS Sports: “The 35-year-old center arrived in Miami Monday night and, pending his passing of a medical exam, will join the team to replace Udonis Haslem, who is out until at least February with a torn ligament in his foot. The deal is for one year at the prorated veteran’s minimum, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Heat will have to release a player to create a roster spot for Dampier, likely Dexter Pittman or Jamaal Magloire. The Heat previously worked out Dampier in September, but decided not to proceed with an offer. The Suns, Raptors, Rockets and Bucks pursued Dampier, who had a verbal agreement to join the Rockets. But Houston surprisingly backed away after failing to clear a roster spot for Dampier. In the end, Dampier got his preferred situation: a title contender forced to accelerate its pursuit of him based on a need that arose during the season. His patience, it turns out, paid off. Another team inquired about Dampier Monday: the Hornets, who caused Dampier to give them serious consideration based on their 11-1 start. But the Heat remained the ideal fit from Dampier’s perspective, and he becomes the latest free agent to join Miami’s title pursuit — albeit under unfortunate circumstances.”

So it’s come to this then…

  • Anthony

    Just play Joel Anthony more

    About time.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

This can either be a great pick-up or an epic fail……

  • Chris

Title contender; contending for ‘Most Disappointing Team Preceded by Most Hype’ title.

  • Mvp23100

Yeah Chris it’s easy to make that observation after 15 games dummy

  • Mvp23100

We got it handed to us by the pacers last night I’m not worried at all I’ve seen bron win 60+ by his lonely the main problem is chemistry we still haven’t seen a starting heat lineup when it gels we will see if all these haters panties are still moist

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Nice pick-up but I’m not thrilled.. I’m hoping he’s in great condition and healthy all-year long. Interior defense is still a problem until solved.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

And I really hope Riley doesn’t stop on just this..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Does Ericka have a little brother that can play point and make wide open 18 footers?

If I’m Riles, I’m shopping Bosh once December 15th gets here, but keep it hush hush. See if I can pry Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol from the Grizzlies for Chris Bosh and Joel Anthony. The trade actually works financially, and gives the Heat some options by next summer, due to the fact Z-Bo’s contract expires after this season. Let’s be real, the Heat need to make their frontcourt stronger, and adding Z-Bo and Marc Gasol does just that. I’m just stirring the pot. lol

What I don’t get is… they lack decent bigmen. So they are going to get rid of a bigman… to make room for one?…

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

Dacre: If you factor in the keyword ‘decent’ then you realize why they’d get rid of Pittman or Maggloire

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

If bringing in Erick Dampier is seen as a good thing for Miami, they’re in worse shape than anybody thought. To quote Russ Bengtson: Yes! Now they can play even slower!

  • Sparker

patience? those workouts must have been brutal or he’d be employed. and magloire must be horrendous.

  • catchmeimballin

hope they keep pittman…they already got rid of dasean butler

  • vtrobot

He won’t pass the physical becuz the doctors will find that he has no heart. Erick Dampier to the rescue!?! Wasn’t Mikki Moore available?

  • Ali

@ Royal…Epic Fail! The whole “Decision”/3 100milli so called Big 3 has been, and is going
to continue to be a EPIC FAIL all season! Erik Dampier!
    c’mon son…getdaf***outtaherewitdatbullshi*

  • Mario

This old, slow, overweight mummy isn’t the answer. Bron and Wade had teams built around them, with a focus on their weaknesses. The collection of players in Miami isn’t a team, it’s a collection of players. To be a elite team it’s not just the stars that makes them great, it’s also good role players and a great system put in place by the Coach. Miami does not have a system in place, it’s all iso’s and pick and roles.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

BC: Actually I’m starting to suspect this team if they could really run. Or if it is the right scheme for them. The starting lineup actualy doesn’t fit running. In this era of a wide running offense a PUJIT is critical for success. The starting five don’t have ANYONE capable of doing that. Even if the Frontcourt is small, they can’t run and proven to a more half court type bigs. Anthony and Haslem is not that type! Arroyo kills running not just because of poor shooting but also lack of decision making. Running doesn’t need to start on a defensive stop. Uptempo offense is dictating fast pace both sides of the court regardless of when you’re down 20, killed by a dagger or forced a turnover.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

I really hope they keep Pittman over Magloire. That guy is very light for his size. I honestly think he can play uptempo.

  • Noel

What the hell is a PUJIT

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Awesome…the slowest player in NBA history is bringing his talents to South Beach to save the day! Actually, I like this move…it Gives Miami a defensive presence in the paint, and they desperately need it.

  • JTaylor21

J, this team should run more at all costs regardless of how slow their frontcourt is. The celts with all the dinosaurs they have in the front-court push the ball every play, even the oldies like the spurs run a much faster paced offense than the heat. I don’t know why the hell a team with two of the best athletes in the L choose to walk the ball up the court time after time again. Speed up the damn tempo, Pac-Man’s brother or maybe you should join him in the philippines for good!

  • KB2412345

They should have gotten a bunch a players to fit dwayne wades skillset, and traded LeBron to the Cavs or some team like that where they could fill a roster to suite his needs. and should try and get rid of bosh. and then compete against eachother.

  • http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/ Anthony

You know something is wrong when you are forced to call Dampier to the rescue.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Jtaylor: Though they have Wade and LeBron, ask yourself this. Has there been a time both of them had been successful in a running offense implemented ALL GAME LONG? Answer? NONE. Wade won a title playing half-court offense. James got to the finals playing the same. I NEVER said they can’t run, I’m just SUSPECTING and being OPEN to the idea that they could be more effective in half-court (with a LOT of movement ofcourse). Learn to read.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    @Noel, Pull-up-jumper in transition.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Erick-is-Damp played a great season in his contract year in G-State, then proceeded to steal money from the Mavs after that.
And the Heat grab him AFTER passing on him earlier this season???
    Cue the laugh track…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Dark….they also claimed to have interest in Eddy Curry if/when he shook free…..which is funnier?

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

If the Heat can make ZzZZz (proud of my guy..) fit like that, I think they can do it to Erika too. But in Curry’s case..

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Oh…my…gawd. Eddy the lardface Curry? U would develop a facial tick and lose all your hair if that guy joined your team, E.
(at least Dampier seems to stay in shape during a season, chicken legs and all…)

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

I’m sure Erika could claim he’s still the best center after Shaq now.

  • Cizzo

Man all of your arguments are pointless and centerless Like the Heat….

  • johnny c

why won’t they play magloire? he’s a big guy who’s proven to be servicable, look at his numbers when he gets minutes. i’d take big cat any day over erica

Just LBJ said, as heat fans we’re keeping everything 4 the playoffs. KingJames don’t disappoint me and more importantly don’t disappoint yourself.

  • vtrobot

eddy curry is always funnier than anyone you compare him to, damp included. damp or all-star center magloire? that’s a fine mess you’re in, spo.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

    cosign Anthony, Erica to da rescue means p r o b l e m s

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    More Eddie House, less Carlos.

  • izzo

I hope they’re paying him by the quarter.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Even Fox News couldn’t spin this in a positive way.

  • http://google c_cantrell

should have signed him sooner honestly

  • YokoDMV

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Magloire played fine last season. Dont know why hes not playing more. With z, magloire, and now damp, theyve got a decent center by committee. Zs shooting being the most eeffective contribution of all. They will be ok. O uh some canadian joel will do….something

  • aLEx_002

this isn’t the same HEAT team… Haslem, their best rebounder, great at drawing charges, and nice jumpshooter is out “indefinetely”, Wade isn’t looking the same, and Spoelstra looks like he’s gonna breakdown. The team with Mike Miller, Dwyane Wade, and Udonis Haslem all healthy and ready to play was the REAL title contender.. i miss those times :/
