Phil Jackson to Pau Gasol: Marc Gasol is Tougher

The Zen Master has needled Pau about a supposed lack of toughness ever since the Lakers acquired him, and no matter how many titles the big fella wins for him, Jackson simply won’t let it go. The latest jabs (jokingly, of course), via the LA Times: “So do the Lakers have the wrong Gasol? Of course not. But Lakers Coach Phil Jackson jabbed at his all-star forward when asked about Pau Gasol going up against his brother, Marc, when the Lakers play Memphis on Tuesday at Staples Center. ‘It’s been very hard on him,’ Jackson said of past battles in the post between the brothers. “A lot of times we say we traded the wrong guy and tell him that Marc is a tougher, more powerful player than he is. [Marc] doesn’t have the shooting touch yet, but his defense, his rebounding is very good. He gets a kick out of playing against Pau. He’s actually a little more physical than Pau is. I like to bring it to [Pau's] awareness.’  The Lakers acquired Pau in February 2008 for Kwame Brown, Aaron McKie, Javaris Crittenton, two first-round picks and the rights to Marc, who the Lakers drafted with a second-round pick in 2007.”

    Well it’s true

  • KB2412345

    Fatter = Tougher

  • http://www.twitter.com/hurstySYD Hursty

I’d rather have the guy averaging 25, 10, 5 and 2 over someone slightly tougher.

  • http://ohlaglambam.blogspot.com Zabba

Yeah, but who would you rather have in bed?

  • http://gmail dirty frank

Pau plays much tougher than he did his first year with the Lakers. Phil’s gotta keep him on his toes though.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

if I’m correct, this issue of toughness is something Pau takes to heart….perhaps Phil is just “keeping him on his toes” as you say but you never know how things can backfire… nah Pau’s too level-headed a dude

  • Love4Humanity

Pau is Good. But Marc is tougher. And has the potential to be better than Pau if he was on a different team with a better coach

  • gerardo

    Lol @ zabba

    LMAO at Phil Jackson.

  • http://masterx1983@hotmail.com marchalmadness

not interesting, marc is tougher but pau is better so wo do you rather have?

  • http://kenrod_ps@yahoo.com KRod

Kwame Brown was tougher than the two!

  • flippity

Lol at Zabba. Seriously though, I have always said that Pau would be the starting center for an All Ugly NBA Team. Dude looks like the in-between stage of a man turning into a werewolf. Sam Cassell would play the point.

  • JTaylor21

^Popeye Jones would be the “Face” of the team.

  • Yesse

Well he is bigger. Still doesn’t mean he would be better.

  • ClydeSays

Pretty sure Phil & the Lakers knew what they were getting when they traded for Gasol (scorer, rebounder, capable defender). To his credit Pau has improved his D a bit. But I doubt he’s ever going to be an elite defender or even ‘tougher’ at this point in his career…

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

Scottie pippen would be the starting sf. and George Muresan will anchor the middle

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Tyrone Hill would be the 6th man.

  • CAPTAIN HINDSIGHT

LAKERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TRADED CARON FOR KWAME.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/olybb/news/story?id=5493184 Jackie Moon

Eboy thinks that Pau and Phil must have major beef.

  • JTaylor21

Calvin Booth, Greg Oden and AK47 round out the roster.

  • JTaylor21

I forgot to add known beauties such as Micheal Ruffin, Wang Zhi Zhi, and Ms. I’m with Ugly> Shelden Williams.

  • Heals

It’s true, but not in the sense that Pau is a total softy. Usually little brothers
go that extra bit to try to be better than a big bro that excels at sports…

  • jakedouglasroberts

seeing as i’ve seen both play up close and personal for the majority of both of their careers, i can comfortably say that marc IS the tougher of the two. pau is more skilled, and not nearly as much of a pushover as some people would have you believe, but marc is just an oak. the guy stands his ground under the basket, and he has a sly way of getting under people’s skin. i still remember when he got dwight howard tech’d up in the magic-grizz game early in the season last year. the one that rudy won at the buzzer. that incident sticks in my mind because you never really see dwight lose his cool, and marc definitely got to him. i’m not really trying to start a debate or an argument, but can anyone explain (with the lack of legit centers) how marc ISN’T a top 5 center in the L? even though i was born and raised in memphis, i’m not really a diehard grizz fan (lifelong pistons fan because of my family), but alot of times i think that he’s the second best, and maybe THE most well-rounded center in the NBA. he’s an incredible passer from anywhere on the court, easily comparable to his big brother. he can score legitimately out to 15 feet, and with both hands around the bucket. he’s a good man defender, and decent weakside shot blocker. also, he and Z-BOUNDS make up the best 4-5 rebounding duo in the NBA.

  • jimmythesaint

like Steve Nash said … “no one GAVE us Pau Gasol”
How did Jerry West not get charged and convicted of fraud for this deal?!

  • unrel

he’s tougher.. because he’s bigger and stronger.. good eye, coach.. but pau’s skill level and game is light years ahead of his brother’s.. but marc is still really really good..

  • ripslam

    This is true.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Ah, no big deal. Zen Master knows his players. It’s Pau Gasol, not Randy Moss — you can say these things to him.

  • http://dodgers.com Joey E.

hey jimmythesaint, Jerry West was retired at the time of the Pau trade. THat was all Chris Wallace

  • JD

I wonder when its all said and done which Gasol brother will be considered better

  • Blackphantom

Marc is tougher, but Pau is more skilled, experienced, and better all around

  • Haslem

is pau gasol really considered ugly

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

where does Phil say Marc is tougher… still trying to find it

  • reflex

cosign onlyclipsfan, Slam need to stop with these tabloid-esque headlines. It’s lazy journalism & they’re better than that

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Don’t know how y’all forgot Adonal Foyle on the ugly team.

  • Groves@UWA

    LOL@ zabba

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

marc might be tougher, but THATS AN UNGRATFULL SOB, THAT PHIL JACK…AT LEAST KOBE IS GREATFULL CAUSE HE KNOWS BETTER THAN ANYONE PAU WAS INSTRUMENTAL TO HIS 2 SHIPS AS A FIRST OPTION.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Sebasti%C3%A1n_Gipuzkoa_BC A l a n

Pau: 21 pts, 13 reb, 5 as, in 29 min.
Marc: 11 pts, 8 reb, 5 as, in 28 min.
Who cares who’s better?? Both are. I just hope Marc gets out of hell as soon as possible, it took Pau 6 and a half years… and I mean no offense for the Grizz, but that extension to Conley means they will do nothing for the next 10 years.

  • http://www.acb.com A l a n

I just hope Marc gets out of the bottomless pit he’s playing ASAP (Grizz will NEVER recover of those extensions they sign…). And you cannot compare players at different stages of their carrer. At his age Pau was more skilled than Marc, but Marc is more of an interior force. Together they are super, as seen when playing 4 Spain.
