Post Up: Deng Drops 4-0

And ‘Reke Evans calls it a comeback.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Chicago 110, Portland 98

Oh hey, Luol Deng. A career-high 40 points on 14-19 from the field? Not too shabby. Derrick Rose was also solid, with 16 points and 13 dimes, and apparently he’s doing something right, because the Chicago crowd was raining down “MVP” chants as the third-year player shot free throws in the final minutes. LaMarcus Aldridge (33 points, 9 boards) was pretty great—though Joakim Noah’s foul trouble didn’t hurt—but nary a single other Blazer did enough to make this one competitive. Brandon Roy was their next highest scorer with 17, though it was one of the quieter 17-point performances imaginable; I watched the majority of the game and don’t remember him putting in more than a couple baskets. In other news, the Bulls might be really, really good this season. They’re coming together nicely, and DRose is living up to the hype—plus more. Like, a lot more.

Sacramento 111, Toronto 108

Right off the bat, the Raptors jumped ahead with a 17-point lead in the first quarter—a lead Sacramento spent the rest of the night chipping away at. The Kings finally caught up in the fourth, led by Tyreke Evans (23 points, all but two after the first) and DeMarcus Cousins, who was able to manhandle Andrea Bargnani in the post. Bargs did put up 28 (dude’s a fantasy beast), while DeMar DeRozan tied his career high with 24. DMDR posterized Samuel Dalembert to put Toronto down one with 13 seconds left, but the Kings were able to hold on for the W. Anyone think Sacto would be 3-1 after four games? Yeah, they’ve had a relatively easy schedule (TWolves, Nets, Cavs, Raps—OK, “relatively easy” might be a slight understatement), but still, props to them for taking caring of business.

San Antonio 97, L.A. Clippers 88

Despite some monster throwdowns from Clippers Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin early on, this one was pretty much all Spurs. Their attack was well-balanced, as every non-DeJuan Blair starter went for double figures, with Tony Parker’s 19 leading the way. Baron Davis, who’s been a mere ghost of his former self the past few games, sat this one out with a sore knee—though he basically admitted that “sore knee” means “out of shape”. For what it’s worth, big ups to Baron for coming clean about the situation, and hopefully he turns it around and gets back on the court asap. An 0-4 record is not a good look for a squad with so much talent and potential sitting around.

Performance of the Night: Luol Deng: 40 points (14-19 from field), 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal
Moment of the Night: Manu Ginobili gambles and fails, allowing Eric Gordon the opportunity to do something terrible to James Anderson. And better yet, the Clips’ commentator cuts off the sideline reporter to yell “OHHH ME OH MY,” which was both rude and hilarious.

A slightly more loaded schedule’s on tap for tonight, dudes and dudettes. Back tomorrow.

See what happens when you don’t shoot 31 times, Derrick? Good work, young man!

  • CoachWalt_W

Derrick does what’s needed, and Portland did a good job of bracket defense on him. Luckily Deng jump shot was falling as 14-19 with a couple three’s made means very few free throws shot to attain 40. If shots are falling all the time for his teamates Derrick has no problem passing, as years prior we have had to beg him to be more aggressive on offense b/c we had lack of others scorers. Lastly 10 or more assist can be nightly when guys hit the wide open attempts Derrick creates for them on a nightly basis.

  • http://hansdeiter33@gmail.com Bmack

Yeah Derrick you should listen to Eboy, he’s obviously what got you this far.

  • http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/ Anthony

Richard Jefferson is playing well for us so far.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

    Man the dunk is sexy!!

  • http://thahiphopcorner.com Kevin

Manu straight set James Anderson up for failure lol. Great win for SA though

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

James Anderson lost his face last night.

i can’t possibly see how any of the drose haters can pick on his game last night. see what happens when other people produce on the team? derrick doesn’t HAVE to shoot 31 shots.

  • The D Train

21, 6 and 6, 45% FG, 33% 3-pt, 6 TO’s per game. 28, 9 and 5, 45% FG, 21% 3-pt, 5 TO’s per game. Line one is LBJ. Line two is Rose. Pretty nice first week for Rose, regardless of any backhanded compliments that people on these boards might continue to lob his way. (And before everyone gets their pantaloons all twisted up, I was just using LBJ’s numbers as a reference point, not trying to say that Rose is better than Lebron, or anything crazy like that.)

  • PapaBearATL

Big up to DRose; What the heck is the problem with the Clips defensive rotation?

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

An opposing SF burned the Blazers? If only they had an elite SF to counter…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Perhaps the dumbest thing D-Train has ever posted, and he’s normally a top notch comment producer.

  • The D Train

i beg to differ, E. i have posted much dumber things, many times over.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

DRose passed more, but he also had like six or seven turnovers, many of them easily avoidable. Dude has to get better at understanding when to attack and when to slow it down. And, he needs to know where he’s going and what he’s going to do before he attacks the rim. Sometimes he just barrels into the lane and hopes for the best. Not a good move.
But, I totally disagree with people who think he’s not a willing or very capable passer. Dude sees the floor, but he’s just moving to fast out there. Young, quick point guards should be required by their coaching staffs to watch game film of Chris Paul all season long. And the bigger ones should have to watch Deron Williams.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Just to reiterate, I thought D-Rose played excellent ball last night.

  • Ptown

Everybody that saw the Bulls game saw that Derrick only started turning it over when the game was practically out of reach in the fourth when the blazers bench came in. My blazers had no answer for him, they basically tried face guarding him full court to no avail

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

and I hate the clippers. I hate them with a deep and abiding hatred. Vinny Del Negro is already proving that his horrid coaching in Chicago was not a fluke.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

@papabear – the problem is Vinny D doesn’t coach. There is no reason a team with that much talent should be 0-4. Thibs has been a welcomed change in Chicago.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Agreed with Diesel.
Last year, the Bulls were decent defensively because of the principles Skiles instilled, but Del Negro didn’t reinforce them. This year, they are much better on defense, and they seem to have some sort of idea about what they want to do on most offensive possession. They just lack talent right now.
The Clippers have so much talent it’s sickening. On that bench, they have a playoff team. On the floor, they have a lottery team. That is solely a coaching problem.
If Lionel Hollins could get Mayo, Gay and Randolph to buy in and compete and share the ball, then there is no excuse for what is happening in L.A.

  • Feez22

Deng had a great game. Probably won’t have one as good as this again this yr by nonetheless a great game( something about former dukies… Play good in stretches and then fall off the face of the earth for long stretches whats up w/ that?). Rose is definitely developing as he should be. I just don’t think he will leapfrog deron or cp3 anytime soon as best pg.

  • http://slamonline.com SpaceJam

D Rose has excellent court vision. Deng finally stepped up and Korver started making shots so he could actually get those assist. He didn’t need to take the 30+ shots as he has before because his teammates actually made the shots he creates for them on a consistent basis. The turnovers happened @ the end of the 4th when the blazers bench doubled @ half court and his teammates were not very close to him. He is playing great, as of right now the MVP chants are well deserved. I can’t wait to chant when I go to my Bulls game this year.

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just Bcuz

whats with all the d.rose hate? iis it that hard to give deng props and talk about the bulls without trying to knock rose? geez let it go

  • http://bulls.com airs

@just bcuz, actually this is the lightest drose hate i have ever seen on slam. actually i don’t really see much hating at all.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

My Bulls are looking, as Slim Chin would say, NIIICE! Rose is solid, hopefully Deng is awake now, LOVE their defense (especially Bogans, Noah and Asik). The November roadtrip is huge, hopefully they can go at least .500 on it. One HUGE area of concern – our two “shooting” guards, Keith Bogans and Ronnie Brewer, are averaging a COMBINED 5.6 points per game on 26% shooting from the field, and 22% from 3. JJ Redick would look real good in a Bulls uni right now…

  • B-Ball Maestro

SportsCenter said that this was a career high in assist (13)for Rose.

    I hope that’s not hating.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Calling Ronnie Brewer a “shooting” guard should be illegal.

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

nobody saw the Kings comeback cuz kings games aren’t televised anywhere =(. People are going to be thoroughly surprised when they see them play.

  • Feez22

@SpaceJam… To be frank the only player(s) that should be chanted as MVP’s after their 4th season game should be former MVP’s or NBA champion type players… I can’t say that rose MVP chants this early are well deserved for this reason. Why?Melo balled out in the 1st month of the season last yr and wasn’t even in consideration at the end. Same with bosh 2 yrs ago. Hell same with lebron 3 yrs ago(from 1st in MVP Early to 3rd behind Kobe and cp3) Save the MVP chants for midseason.

  • B-Ball Maestro

Unless I’m new here or something, you guys also kinda butchered your title on Deng (“4-0″)?

What team is 4-0 now (Sacremento)?

  • http://bulls.com airs

i think the MVP chants are about his supporters being defensive and jabbing at the drose haters, but im sure some of the people chanting it believe it. it is just a tad early though. a tad being about 4 months early.

  • http://bulls.com airs

and seriously, keith bogans is out starting 2 guard? jeez.

  • B-Ball Maestro

PS: I know Deng had 40 points. Lol.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Adam Figman

Most surprising part of the MVP chants were the commentators’ reactions. After hearing the screams, the guys were like, “Well, yeah, look how well he’s playing. He’s definitely an MVP candidate.” There are MVP candidates in early November?

  • http://bulls.com airs

    ^thats stacey king for you

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just Bcuz

in the end…watch all the d.rose haters turn into diick riders…..i dont wanna hear that shiit then

  • Jagster

The Bulls announcers are a bunch of homers. Can they just break out the Pom Poms please, next time?

No wonder there is such rabid fan-boyism for Rose. I know Tommy Heinsohn with the Celtics cable network is the same way (though at least his parter plays the straight man).

But these guys look like they were working on a Rose promotional video.

Now I can see why people hate New Yorkers so much. Their broadcasters are crazy! NY announcers rarely get involved in this type of homerism (and I know it’s worse in places like Oklahoma, etc.)in any sport. Trust me. Even when they do, they usually do it from a distance.

I think part of the haterade toward Rose, comes from his fans, which comes from those two crazy TV announcers. Them guys is rabid man!

But they still have their moments. They actually called Noah the teams best passer and said that Deng had Deng Looked best in the pre-season out of all Bulls.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Yeah Adam you can’t take Stacey King serious. That’s his shtick…he plays it up for the local audience. Chicago loves him, everyone else hates him.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I love Stacey King! That’s my dude! Johnny “Red” Kerr is still the GOAT though when it comes to Bulls color commentators. And hell yeah they’re homers. Don’t like it, hit the mute!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Oh, and RIP Johnny Kerr, since I mentioned him.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

I’m with you Enigmatic – My personal favorites: “If you’re scared, go buy a dog” and “He was late on the defensive rotation but right on time for the poster”…and then he follows it up by signing the telestrator. Top notch stuff right there.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I saw the Kings game. Andrea is wack as hell. That boy softer than a motha.

  • Feez22

As a non bulls fan I don’t hate Stacey king he’s actually pretty funny and entertaining. It’s just that as a commentator I believe you need to have some sort of outside perspective considering MVP talks. You should know MVP is won at the mid portion and even end of the season and not super hype a player that has played well the first 4 games. That does a disservice not only to rose but to his fans for putting that expectation on his shoulders (ya rose said he wanted to be MVP too but u get the point). Rose has enough on his plate should a MVP candidacy even be priority? It can all come crashing down on his shoulders at the end of the day. I expect him to have a strong 3rd yr and establish himself as a force in this league. Nothing more nothing less. Seems realistic to me. MVP? After 4 games that’s not realistic.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Are we really trying to determine if Rose or Lebron can be MVP less than 5 games into the season? What the hell has this place turned into?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Adam Figman

I see some talk of what to make of the chants, but I don’t see anyone trying to determine if LeBron or Rose can be MVP. Maybe a little in 1 or 2 comments, but that’s it.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yeah, Diesel! Ha ha! I loved it when, don’t remember who but it was probably either Rose or Deng, went into the lane last night and powered it in against three defenders, and King went nuts – “If you’re scared, buy a dog, Portland!” LMAO. My personal favorite though is whenever a Bull does some absolutley freakin’ nuts, and King freaks the hell out and shouts “OH! STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT!” Ha ha..

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Allenp: Bargnani is a good scorer, but 2 rebounds? Wth? He’s not a real center, of course, but he definitely isn’t wack.

  • http://Bulls.com C-Lo_The_Great

^^ love that Drose commericial at the end when yon hear King’s voice say “This is why this kid is special. This kid special.”

  • ballinnn

Dude i’ve always been so happy Stacey King is our announcer. I always hear clips of other announcers after people do sweet plays and the lack of excitement sometimes is really annoying. Plus who cares if he panders to the Bulls, that’s the team that’s paying him and who he played for.

  • Jagster

I hear you on Stacy King. And I don’t have a problem with it. He’s not my announcer. He’s yours. But as Fee22 said. Where’s his perspective? He is a color commentator/analyst after all. It’s just an observation. Some broadcast are professional and some are homers. I know Harry Carey was the same way for the Cubs.

I was just trying to illustrate, why they appeared to be so many D.Rose fanboys (because of him) and consequently why there’s been so much Drose hate as of late (along with his World Championship play).

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

bulls annoucers are sh1tty as hell enigmatic, good fair win for your bulls though, blazers didnt play defense..gotta bring back oden to dominate noah like he allways did when matched up…and rose´s improving but 13 assists is his carreer high?lol at somebody sayin hes top3 pg

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Oden hasn’t dominated Noah since the NCAA title game…
