Shaquille O’Neal: Celtics ‘Best Team I’ve Been on’

Shaq, who has been accepted with open arms (and nostrils) in Beantown, says the Celtics are the best team he’s ever been a part of. Perhaps it was just the natural high he was on after his big performance last night. From WEEI: “O’Neal said he was just happy to give the Garden crowd a Thanksgiving Eve treat – even at a bargain rate of $1.5 million annually. ‘I think people appreciate my hard work, especially over the past 18 years,’ O’Neal said. ‘I think they understood that when I came here for the 1.5, they knew what was on my mind. For them, it’ll be [NBA title] 18. For the big three, it’ll be two. And for me it’ll be big number 5. That’s the only thing that I’ll focus on right now. This is a great team. The best team I’ve been on. They’ve got a lot of weapons on this team, so on any given night anybody can be the leading scorer. The team’s very unselfish, so the shots are going to drop off and they easily could have shot them and did that but…great game. Great team effort. And now we’ve just got to keep it going.’ Best team O’Neal has ever played on? Even better than those three NBA title teams in the early 2000s and the 2006 Miami Heat? ‘Yes. Best team,’ O’Neal repeated. ‘As far as players….as far as guys being really close…I know we’ve only been at this for two months, but hopefully the outcome to be a good one.’”

He has people on his team he truly respects.
A coach he truly respects, also.

I agree, 1-12, this is the best team Shaq’s been on, and that’s no disrespect to some of those great Lakers teams he was on.

  • Chris

He’ll be saying this in 2 years time when he is with Sir Charles and Kenny on TNT. And that time, it WILL be true.

  • WB30

SHAQ is saying that about every team he’s been on thus far..

  • The Philosopher

Wait, he did respect Phil Jackson.
    For a little while, anyway.

  • namik

Every team Shaq has been on has been the best team he’s ever been on. Can’t wait till he proclaims Rondo to be the “best player in the game”. That’s usually the next step. Then he bums around. Then relations sour. Then the coach sucks, the team mates suck etc etc

  • benno

    Yeah Shaq!!!!

  • rainman

“this is the best team i’ve been on”

Shaq has sweet talked all 293838973737 team’s his been on in the exact same way. Then qhen he leaves he has nothing but shots to take at his former coaches, and players. This doesnt surprise me in the slightest lol

  • hoodsnake

I’m not a LA fan but Kobe will be explaining to you that you are wrong in June with 6 fingers Mr Big Irrelavant

  • neaorin

    what WB30 and namik said.

  • Yann Blavec

Do you remember when scottie pippen said the portland trail blazers were the best team he had been on ?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/32JSE Yesse

Oh my God. Shaq has said this about every team he has been on so far.

  • ShadiestBen

Philo – Yep Shaq had a lot more respect for Phil than Kobe did during the three peat years. Didn’t know that had changed, Jackson was always vocal in his support of Shaq in LA.

  • EJ

Well if you take Shaq away from this team and the early 2000s Lakers teams, then these Celtics are better.

  • The Philosopher

I only say for a “little while” because when Shaq got to Miami, he was telling everyone who would listen how Pat Riley is the best coach he’s ever played for.
Straight disrespecting Phil, in my opinion.

  • mp73

So I’m not the only one who sees through all of Shaq’s B.S. and realize he’s doing the new boyfriend is better routine. Maybe he’s closer to this Celtic team because it has other broken down old horses (j. Oneil/Garnett) or he gets to play grab ass with others like Nate & Big Baby. It will be his last chance ring chase for his 5th ring and the best chance at that but no way is the team better then the 99-01 Lakers.

  • boggs

kobe just put his fist through a wall…

  • Ken

@boggs: why do you think his finger never heals?

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Shaq leaves old team. Trashes old team.
Shaq arrives to new team. Praises new team.
Wash, rinse, repeat; this should not be news.

  • Kobe

Shaq only has 4 championships? LOL

  • LD

Shaq only has 4 championships? LOL

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

    Never change, Shaqtus.

  • Jackie Moon

And Boston is his favorite city EVAR!

  • Heals

He’s right, although a couple of those LA teams were stacked, but without a ring in June it won’t be remembered as such…

  • paul

Wow. The haters are amazing. OF COURSE he’s just smoking happy smoke, on one level, but let’s get a tiny bit real here, ok? This is basically the Celtics team that won a championship three years ago and almost won one last year. And Shaq is a key piece added to that team. So yeah, there’s obviously a strong case to be made that this is his best team. But the proof will be when we see how much (NBA playoffs) Spring the Celts have in their step…

  • Sam

Delonte West give you some drugs Shaq? WHO GAVE YOU THREE RINGS? WHO GAVE YOU THREE MVP AWARDS???? WHO GAVE THE HONOR OF BEING POSSIBLY A TOP 15 BEST CENTER OF ALL TIME? The Lakers. You made it to the Finals with the Magic, you won a ring with Miami, and you made it to the second round with Cleveland. Sure Boston is a great team, but the best you’ve been on? NO WAY.

  • riggs

this is the best TEAM, he’s ever been on. TEAM which the lakers WERENT when he was there…

  • dfortruth

This after he rode Kobe and D-Wade’s back, Lebron couldn’t get him number 5 so,now it’s time to ride the Celtics.

Still chasing Kobe ha Shaq, the question has already been answered. Did the Lakers keep the best player? hell yeah…can Kobe win a ring without Shaq…hell yeah. Argument done.

  • http://yahoo.com Eboy

I wonder when the time comes which team is going to retire his jersey. The Laker the Heat The Suns Cleveland or The Celtics. Slam should make a poll about this.

  • Robb

    They are nothing without rondo

  • ab40

boston lakers 2011 is gonna be a finals for the ages. the storylines alone will be epic. Bring out the boston ghosts. I still wonder why they didn’t do that last season vs the lakers in the finals

  • ab40

dfortrught check the stats please. any of those early 2000s swingmen would win a title with shaq he was that dominant the fact he only has one mvp and steve nash has two is still the bigest travesty of the last decade in my humble opinion. Hey he’s having fun he’s never played with an elite point at the top of his game. And this years KG is better than the karl malone he played with when playing on the lakers making kg the best pf he’s played with.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

thank you ab40. these kobe stans are beyond reality.

  • LD

I almost agree that Shaq in the early 2000′s would have won championships with any early 2000′s swing man provided that Phil jackon was the coach of the team. Shaq and any all-star swing man would not have won without Phil Jackson. Shaq is best productive when he has a coach who has already won championships. (Phil and Pat Riley) Brain Hill, D’Antoni, Mike Brown, and Alvin Gentry were not gonna get the best out of Shaq. I don’t understand why players refuse to do THEIR best when they do not have such a mighty coach.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

This is why Shaq will not get a statue in LA and this is why Bron and Wade did not let him play on their MIAMI stacked Team. This is why Kobe did not let him come back to LA. This is Why Shaq has only one 4 Rings, but people still proclaim him as most dominate player ever. LOL. This is why Kazaam is his best role ever. This is why when he becomes a real police officer/sheriff he will get his but kicked. This is why Shaq is playing on gang green. This is why I HATE SHAQ and his corny lines and if people believe this ask the teams that played against the Shaq/KObe Laker teams, like Blazers, Jazz, Pacers, 76ers, Kings (got robbed) and many others. BOOK IT!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

What player plays in the NBA for the goal of getting a statue? He’s obviously having his jersey retired by LA… “Only” 4 rings. Right. “Only.”
Kings did get robbed though, co-sign you on that.

  • The Philosopher

    Shaq is a Laker.

  • Kevin McHale

Raise the banner now. The Celtic’s are winning it all baby.

  • fitzy

“….as far as guys being really close…”
how bout people read the entire article before they start arguing about things he did or didnt say

  • http://blogs.thescore.com/tbj/author/hollymackenzie/ Ghost

    Shaq is a magiclakerheatsuncavalierceltic.

  • MattF

I think he may not be referring to the talent level – but they are the best team in terms of playing as a team, his comments about how they make the extra pass, not force their shots after his best team comment kinda back that up.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

What does the interviewer expect Shaq to say? I mean, let’s be honest here.

  • T-Money

I can’t believe people are even asking if the Lakers are going to retire his number. He gave them a 3-peat, with 3 finals MVP! Cmon son.

  • http://jayemmbee23.tumblr.com Clutch Performer

why do people ask stupid questions and get mad at the answers they get?
besides i think its the friendships, these guys look like friends, they look close , like buddies as if the chill off the court like its fun, he wasnt having fun in LA, despite winning its was business but whats better than working with your boys? and no just coworkers, and it helps most of the team is his contemporaries, they were all drafted around the same era, they are mostly 90s boys so its no wonder they click, guys who like to ham it up

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

” So I’m not the only one who sees through all of Shaq’s B.S. and realize he’s doing the new boyfriend is better routine”
Are you kidding? SHAQ doesn’t even believe this. He’s been saying for years he’s the best marketer in the game, and we’re all talking about him. He wins again.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Just happy he can still move that massive frame around to the tune of 25 & 11. Not too shabby, “l’il warrior”.
After that kind of game, i’d probably get all hyperbole-iy too.

Look at these current Celtics from top to bottom including the coaching staff, then juxtapose them next to any of those Lakers 3-Peat teams, and tell me which one of those Lakers teams is better than these Boston Celtics. If you are honest with yourself then you know Shaq is speakin’ da truth right now. I’d say it’s a safe bet that Shaq will finish with at least one more ring before he decides to replace Kenny Smith’s over at TNT.

    *Kenny Smith

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

orange, i hope youre right. about shaq replacing the bum. kenny is just turrible beyond words. he almost ruined horse

  • flipnoyce

Damn there’s so much HATERS up in this joint!!! Shaq just wants to get another ring and he’ll say whatever he has to say and do what ever he has to do to present himself LIKABLE and chase the chip. Which doesn’t bother me because its better than the silly joint he used for the PRINCE SHAMES, “Get a ring for the King”. He knows the deal, at 38 still holding his own.

  • Pau Gasol

I’m just enjoying every game at the moment we’re winning. The big green liability is winning over the heat. Kobe is looking forward to june!

Estoy disfrutando de cada juego en este momento estamos ganando. La responsabilidad es grande y verde ganarse el calor. Kobe está a la espera de junio!

  • biged

In all fairness he did say they are the best team when it come to personalities and “as far as guys being really close”….That doesn’t mean he thinks it’s the best team ‘skill wise’ that he has been on’…

  • compa dizzle

I feel like all the haters in this mess are just sad because shaq may have finally found a team he’s comfortable with. And its no longer LA.He was a great player in his prime, now he wants to go out with a bang. what’s the matter with that?

  • vtrobot

EJ and riggs said some of the only smart comments in this post. c’mon, even IAMORANGE4EVER know what’s up and he’s a Knicks fan. @ dfortruth: the only people who think that shaq rode on kobe’s back and not the other way around are blinded by mamba love. those of us who are not huge fans of either know that shaq is the real reason for those LA championships. yeah, kobe definitely contributed, but he didn’t lead that sh*t. what were those finals MVPs for? those were all a mistake? please.

  • heh8meN1

The question as to whether the Lakers will retire the big F-R-O-N-T-R-U-N-N-E-R’s jersey is predicated on two things:
    1. Which team he chooses to go into the HOF on.
    2. Whether or not Kobe & Gasol win more than 3 chips together.

If he does go in as a Laker that ensures Kobe will have TWO jerseys retired (8 & 24). “Tell me how THAT one-up taste” big F-R-O-N-T-R-U-N-N-E-R.

There’s a reason Shaq only has 1 regular season MVP- he played with KOBE.

And for all of you knuckleheads that were too young to remember or too dumb to look it up- yes the big F-R-O-N-T-R-U-N-N-E-R was the “man” during the FIRST ‘chip:

YET Kobe averaged 28ppg 5.3apg 6.5rpg during the playoffs the last TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS of their 3peat.

FYI- DWADE averaged 28ppg 5.7asst 5.9rpg during the playoffs in ’06. And everyone with eyes know he WON the chip for the big F-R-O-N-T-R-U-N-N-E-R’s fat a$$.

So NO, SHAQ wouldn’t have won a ring(s) with just ANY all-star wing player during the 3peat. Stop with the historical inaccuracies and intellectual dishonesty.

FACE reality or just HATE IT…or just keep drinking the SHAQTUS juice and the half-time Heinsohns.

  • heyallindishit

go go go look at stats they dont lie…. everyone hatin on shaq he and the celtics will win it all so yall can s t f u in june right

  • Badmax

I love Shaq, but he is getting old, senile, he doesn’t know what he is talking about. Sad, very sad.

  • Vik

Yeah…Shaq “only” has 4 rings. And Show-be Bryant would only have TWO if Shaq didn’t carry his sorry *ss back in the early 2000′s. Show-be is the greatest though…the greatest Michael Jordan wannabe to ever play.
