Reports: Peja to Raptors in 5-Player Deal

UPDATE: It’s a done deal.

by Ryne Nelson

The Hornets‘ interest in swapping Peja Stojakovic’s large expiring contract has been well-chronicled. And, now, it seems like Hornets GM Dell Demps has found a deal to his liking.

ESPN‘s Chris Sheridan is reports:

The New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors are in serious discussions on a five-player trade that would send Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless to the Raptors for Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks, a source told ESPN.com Saturday.

The deal was close to being completed Friday night, but was held up over the amount of cash the Hornets would send to the Raptors in the trade.

Still, the holdup was not believed to be insurmountable, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A reliable Greek news source first got wind of the trade this morning. Peja lives in Greece in the offseason, and the report’s author is good friend of Peja’s.

The Raptors get younger and acquire a $15 million expiring contract. The Hornets receive a much-needed big (Andersen) and arguably the best player in the package (Jack). Jack is also one of Chris Paul’s best friends.

It seemed like the Hornets were going to keep Bayless, as they recently traded a first-round pick to acquire him and picked up his player option. He isn’t eligible to be traded until December 23… unless he’s traded individually. So, in order for this deal to happen, it’d have to be broken into two trades.

UPDATE: According to the NBA, it’s now officially a done deal: “The New Orleans Hornets announced today that they have acquired Jarrett Jack, David Anderson and Marcus Banks from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Jerryd Bayless and Peja Stojakovic. ‘We are excited about the players acquired today and feel that our short-term and long-term goals will benefit from this move,’ said Hornets General Manager Dell Demps. ‘Peja has been a valued contributor as a Hornet for years and we wish both Peja and Jerryd all the best in their future and thank them for their recent contributions in helping us get off to a strong start.’”

Didn’t Toronto trade for Jack in an effort to keep Bosh since they were supposedly good friends? Becoming BFFs with the stars is supposedly a good way to boost your trade value.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Ree Roe

    Good move the hornets

  • http://Slamonline.com BK Chris

WTF!!! The Hornets are trading away Peja??!! oops my bad I thought it was 2001! lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Wow. Did not see this coming, especially since Jack is the starting point guard and David Andersen has been pretty decent as a back up.
I hate how the Raptors always pick up players way past their prime (Peja). And I kind of see Jerryd Bayless as the guard version of Anthony Randolph…So much potential, but never able to break out…

  • Sam

I’ve always talked about this: Peja leaving the hornets in the past year and a half. Peja cannot really play anymore and he was the only setback for the Hornets to become a true playoff team. Now, if they get Jack in the mix, they will be a HUGE threat to possibly the Jazz, Spurs, and Mavs.

  • tavoris

The Hornets stacked their bench with da quickness. Dell Demps for exec of the year?

  • Waters

So where does this put Jose Calderon in terms of fantasy?

  • Flight

Yessss. Let Bayless emerge into a deadly scorer with tons of PT in Toronto. As for Peja? He’ll just fit in with the other soft-outside shooting-euros we have. Pull the trigger Collangello,

  • tavoris

@Flight..where’s the PT coming behind Derozan, Barbosa, and Calderon? Dude just has the worst luck so far

  • http://ww Gerard Himself

@tavoris: I think they’ll find a way. Calderon has been losing minutes to Jack anyway, so he and Bayless will probably split time at the pg position. Barbosa can play next to any of them (like he did with Nash)

  • Flight

@tavoris I see Bayless splitting time with Calderon at the point. Replacing Jack as that shoot first type of point guard. The backcourt for Toronto is still up in the air, they’ll be testing out a lot of line ups throughout the season.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Jack would be a great addition. A tweener guard who can come off the bench, or even start, and give you some good minutes a la Jannero Pargo (with better play making skills). Belinelli > Stojakovic

  • http://google c_cantrell

good deal on both sides honestly

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Good deal for the bugs. Pg is locked up now, jack, then banks. Andersen with some nice depth behind meka and west. Nawlins is movin up in the world.

  • Tommy

toronto gets closer to their goal of having a nba franchise without any american player although they got bayless in this trade they will lose jack and banks xD
maybe they should trade away all of their not european players and try to get into the euroleaugue

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Doesn’t this trade kills the Hornets’ flexibility? They traded their biggest expiring. They have huge ties with Emeka and Trevor. Though both are playin well atm, you’d still want to have that flexibility especially when in case Paul somehow left the team in the near future. I’m not updated with their cap so I’m not pretty sure about their finances..

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

hahaha, lets get some sh1t straight; David Anderson is a scrub, thats not depth, and Jack is in fact a slight improvement over Bayless but with no upside at all..wow, they gave up on Jerryd in a couple days! hope he does well in TDot

  • matt

BC is going to test out Bayless to see how good he can be as a starter. Jose and the bench crew have been playing really well together. Im kinda shocked that NOH isn’t using peja’s contract to get a starting sg.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

    Colangelo’s trade criteria:
    - Can he speak a foreign language?
    - Can he shoot the 3?

  • JTaylor21

Good deal for NOLA but how does this help the raps? They already have enough euro-soft jumpshooters.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

Jtaylor; this trade is Jack for Bayless, the rest is gravy

  • andreanglais

The raps will miss Jack’s rebounding and scoring, but the contract flex will be nice. It would be nice to see Bayless pan out, but really, this is about the $. Is that an obscure contract kicker or what? And if it is so easy to sidestep, whats the point?

  • JD

The long era of Jerryd Bayless in New Orleans is coming to a close

  • JoeMaMa

Ed Davis(soon), Jerryd Bayless, Demar Derozan. Bargs puts up 20, Kleiza puts up 12-15…and with three young studs, I’m happy. Colangelo gets ripped for a ‘Euro’ team, but he’s putting together a youth movement in front of us. And with another draft pick…and quite possibly, with this young group, a high one, the Raps will be a very exciting, athletic, and very good team in 2-3 years. See, my Raptor brothers?! That’s how you spin this trade into success. Oh, and David Andersen moving opens up time for more Amir. I mean, while I’m on the optimism streak…

  • http://jayemmbee23.tumblr.com Clutch Performer

Euro Squad: NBA Edition we are.
we need to be trading for big bruisers like Reggie Evans, but who can be an Offensive Threat
None of this soft euro BS, We already have enough of that, and Jump shooting,Peja is an older Andrea

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

I agree with trailblazing, this looks like a trade between jack and bayless, and with that being the case, NOLA’s side does not make any sense. Bayless and jack are practically the same player, with jeryd earning less and having a better upside as a project player. They just gave out peja’s expiring 14mil for banks and his expiring 4mil, and andersen whom I’d play mbenga first for.

  • dma

Jack and Bayless traded for each other yet again..

  • TDotLove

    Fken hate Colangelo

  • MrSuper

Now I know Peja is past his prime, but in NO WAY is he a liability to any team. I see a lot of people with harsh words on these boards, now I want to see this trade completed and learn finally if one player was holding a “contender” team from reaching its goals…

  • G

@JoeMaMa: You said it. Colangelo is dropping salary and building a young, athletic, exciting team.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Bayless to Toronto would be f*cking sweet!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’m a big fan of Jarret Jack but Bayless’ athleticism and shooting (he’s got an underrated jumper imo) are desperately needed in Toronto. Joe is right.

  • Flight

    Lol @ Anton.

  • burnt_cheicken

Bayless for Jack helps both teams. The Raptors wouldn’t be giving up their starter if they weren’t planning on giving Jerryd minutes. And Andersen for Peja is essentially one Euro-style player for another.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Can anybody tell me when Ed Davis is expected to play? And why how he was injured?

  • Sao

Not a good trade for the Raptors. I don’t understand the logics behind.

Anderson has been playing well and he is solid off the bench – shoots the ball well and plays better defend than AB.

Jack isn’t playing well but his salary is attractive.

The thing is we need a good Strong Centre and a quick decent size PG who can penetrate and dish out.

  • burnt_chicken

Anton: so explain Bellinelli for Wright. this trade gives one softy (Andersen) for another (Peja), and gets someone with potential in exchange for a player at the peak of his abilities. I don’t like a lot of Bryan’s moves, but this one seems fine.

man i hate the fact that my fav player on the raptors is GONE! Jack was playing so good for us that I actually saw this coming! I like the trade tho. Our Staff in Toronto likes it to bcuz we now have money to RE-BUILD a SOLID TEAM!

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

hopefully this is Bayless’ chance to actually make some noise.

  • mAMba

Why would we trade Jack he was holding it down for the Raps and now we just added another soft euro 3 point shooter. Lets see how good Bayless fits in cause hes gonna get a lot of PT for sure.

  • http://www.nobrain.dk omer urundul

    @anton rep+

  • The Philosopher

Jack is a great pick up.

  • ShadiestBen

Jack is a great pick up. Andersons been the Jay Smith of Toronto CP3 can turn any jump shooting big into atleast 8-10 points a game. Thought they would of held on to Peja though he lit Dallas up on Monday.
Bayless deserves somewhere where he will get major minutes dont think he will in TO Calderons playing great recently Barbosas back today Derozan is a soon to be all star. Weems is tough off the bench. He may end up just getting backup pg minutes like he was in the NO.

  • goattree

I agree that it’ll probably take an injury (or a Jose trade as well) for Bayless to get big minutes. But it that happens, he could break out. The big difference between Bayless and Anthony Randolph is that Jerryd has been playing behind great players during the season, whereas Randolph had a situation and coach that should have maximized his athletic talent, but it never came together.

As for Ed Davis, he’s been practicing I think, I might be getting sent to the DLeague with Alabi as early as next week. Injured his knee in a summer time pickup game.

  • mAMba

I think Bayless could be starting pretty early on for the Raps cause Calderon and the 2nd unit have had great chemistry for a while now and Triano doesn’t wanna break that up.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Migs

I don’t know why people can’t envision Bayless getting any PT. Barbosa is currently nursing a shoulder injury, on top of a wrist injury that will eventually need to be fixed; Calderon hasn’t exactly been an ironman in the last couple years; and the Raps just traded away the the only other two players on the roster that could handle the ball. Good trade on both ends. Peja’s $15mil expiring + Reggie’s $5mil expiring + a whole slew of young prospects + 2 first round draft picks = a Raptors rebuilding youth movement. That’s something many of us fans have been wanting for a while.

  • Hammer Time

Peja is nothing special, and Toronto won’t be special with him.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Bayless will get plenty of playing time, especially at the point. This is a really good trade for both teams.

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

Teddy, there are some reports claiming that he should be ready sometime next week. They didn’t give an exact date though. And I don’t have an injury report in front of me but at the top of my head I would guess either wrist or back .lol

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Bayless might finally be given the reins to a team, because Calderon is playing awful and Bayless is young enough to form a group for the future with DeRozan, Weems and the other young Raptors.

  • rich

davis will b back this week or early next week according to the papers in the dot

  • barnabusb

    Is Davis actually any good?

  • JoeMaMa

Ed Davis got injured playing pick up ball before the season in Mississauga; I think it was at the Erindale Campus of UofT. He injured his knee; a slight cartiledge tear, I think. He should be going in a couple weeks. Also, I don’t know why people are even saying Peja’s name right now. Toronto made this deal for Bayless and Peja’s CAP SPACE. Maybe Peja gets minutes, maybe not. But it’s the money that motivated that move. With Andersen gone, it gives more time for Davis when he returns, and Amir Johnson for D and boards. Why give minutes to that guy when you have young bigs who need court time? As a Raptors fan in the midst of a lost season, these are the trades that keep you hopeful of good things to come.

  • ClydeSays

Just seems like a cap relief deal to me. Doesn’t improve either team significantly, except for the fact that the Hornets now have a better quality backup PG.

  • Shem

LOVE this trade as a Raps fan! Banks only played during garbage time, and now that Ed Davis is coming back, we need to give time to him as well as Amir Johnson. I think the Hornets are looking more towards this year acquiring Jack and the Raps are looking toward the future getting Bayless. As for Peja, he’s washed up but his 17 mill expiring contract will be nice next year so good move Raps.

  • matt

ppl, BC didn’t trade for peja the player, he traded for peja the contract. I actually checked it out and raps save about 2.7 million not including peja’s trade kicker, but apparently NOH gave TOR 3 million. also, bayless should start. Shocked though that NOH didn’t get a quality wing using peja’s contract.

  • Vince5

I always wait a few games to decide if the trade was good or not(Raps fan), except the Carter-Nets sh*ts trade which was arguably the WORST trade in NBA history.

  • http://slamonline.com niQ

omphalos. I don’t think we should let Bayless have starting gig for the future. If we get a top 3 pick it’s going to be Kyrie Irving! lol Optimistic thinking tough.lol.. But then again there’s still Brandon Knight!

  • T-Money

F-ck BC. Miami offered him SuperCoolBeas for free in the Bosh sign and trade and he passed… in order to give 35 mil to Amir Johnson. The same Amir Johnson who’s behind Reggie freaking Evans in the depth chart. F-ck BC for real, go win a Euroleague Cup or something.

  • Jose

Peja’s contract might’ve been nice to trade for Melo, that woulda been epic right there but idk what Denver woulda got outta it other than cap room

  • rich

this aint too bad of a trade

  • ktokyo

the Raps love their Euros. Actually, they should just pay their team in Euros. That’s where all the money is going.

  • bnets

Hornets will then buy out Marcus Banks then get Eric Dampier. And Jack gives Hornets get a better back pg next to CP3 than Bayless cause he`s only a scoring pg which they dont need. In all this, Hornets are gettin ready for playoffs.
As for the Raptors, they are goin to trade players except Bargs, startin a rebuilding process

  • Pharoah

Youth movement for raps in full effect.

  • burnt_chicken

All the idiots posting about how TO loves their Euros blahblah should realize that this trade is for BAYLESS and CAP ROOM/RELIEF. And then they can go back to sucking on mommy’s shrivelled titties and leave the sports talk to the big boys.
Oh, and know how many Euros are on the Raptors roster, idiots? FOUR–and that’s counting Peja–(but not Barbosa) out of FOURTEEN. So shut up, please.

  • uv

Youth movement? Peja is older than everyone on the raps lol.

  • Shem

DUMBASSES, Peja is a 15 mill expiring contract do you really think we want him for him? We want him for the cap room he ll give us.. ignorant idiots

  • Towelie

I don’t get it…why would you trade away Collison, a solid backup behind Paul, then acquire Bayless, who has more to prove (imo), then get Jarrett Jack…someone explain to me please.

  • http://nicekicks.com Meloman2.0

People are so focused on Peja…. but Peja is not what the Raptors gain with this trade. Bayless will flourish and be the starting pg b4 the season is done
