Reports: Peja to Raptors in 5-Player Deal

UPDATE: It’s a done deal.

by Ryne Nelson

The Hornets‘ interest in swapping Peja Stojakovic’s large expiring contract has been well-chronicled. And, now, it seems like Hornets GM Dell Demps has found a deal to his liking.

ESPN‘s Chris Sheridan is reports:

The New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors are in serious discussions on a five-player trade that would send Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless to the Raptors for Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks, a source told ESPN.com Saturday.

The deal was close to being completed Friday night, but was held up over the amount of cash the Hornets would send to the Raptors in the trade.

Still, the holdup was not believed to be insurmountable, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A reliable Greek news source first got wind of the trade this morning. Peja lives in Greece in the offseason, and the report’s author is good friend of Peja’s.

The Raptors get younger and acquire a $15 million expiring contract. The Hornets receive a much-needed big (Andersen) and arguably the best player in the package (Jack). Jack is also one of Chris Paul’s best friends.

It seemed like the Hornets were going to keep Bayless, as they recently traded a first-round pick to acquire him and picked up his player option. He isn’t eligible to be traded until December 23… unless he’s traded individually. So, in order for this deal to happen, it’d have to be broken into two trades.

UPDATE: According to the NBA, it’s now officially a done deal: “The New Orleans Hornets announced today that they have acquired Jarrett Jack, David Anderson and Marcus Banks from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Jerryd Bayless and Peja Stojakovic. ‘We are excited about the players acquired today and feel that our short-term and long-term goals will benefit from this move,’ said Hornets General Manager Dell Demps. ‘Peja has been a valued contributor as a Hornet for years and we wish both Peja and Jerryd all the best in their future and thank them for their recent contributions in helping us get off to a strong start.’”

Bayless might finally be given the reins to a team, because Calderon is playing awful and Bayless is young enough to form a group for the future with DeRozan, Weems and the other young Raptors.

davis will b back this week or early next week according to the papers in the dot

  • barnabusb

    Is Davis actually any good?

  • JoeMaMa

Ed Davis got injured playing pick up ball before the season in Mississauga; I think it was at the Erindale Campus of UofT. He injured his knee; a slight cartiledge tear, I think. He should be going in a couple weeks. Also, I don’t know why people are even saying Peja’s name right now. Toronto made this deal for Bayless and Peja’s CAP SPACE. Maybe Peja gets minutes, maybe not. But it’s the money that motivated that move. With Andersen gone, it gives more time for Davis when he returns, and Amir Johnson for D and boards. Why give minutes to that guy when you have young bigs who need court time? As a Raptors fan in the midst of a lost season, these are the trades that keep you hopeful of good things to come.

Just seems like a cap relief deal to me. Doesn’t improve either team significantly, except for the fact that the Hornets now have a better quality backup PG.

LOVE this trade as a Raps fan! Banks only played during garbage time, and now that Ed Davis is coming back, we need to give time to him as well as Amir Johnson. I think the Hornets are looking more towards this year acquiring Jack and the Raps are looking toward the future getting Bayless. As for Peja, he’s washed up but his 17 mill expiring contract will be nice next year so good move Raps.

ppl, BC didn’t trade for peja the player, he traded for peja the contract. I actually checked it out and raps save about 2.7 million not including peja’s trade kicker, but apparently NOH gave TOR 3 million. also, bayless should start. Shocked though that NOH didn’t get a quality wing using peja’s contract.

  • Vince5

I always wait a few games to decide if the trade was good or not(Raps fan), except the Carter-Nets sh*ts trade which was arguably the WORST trade in NBA history.

omphalos. I don’t think we should let Bayless have starting gig for the future. If we get a top 3 pick it’s going to be Kyrie Irving! lol Optimistic thinking tough.lol.. But then again there’s still Brandon Knight!

  • T-Money

F-ck BC. Miami offered him SuperCoolBeas for free in the Bosh sign and trade and he passed… in order to give 35 mil to Amir Johnson. The same Amir Johnson who’s behind Reggie freaking Evans in the depth chart. F-ck BC for real, go win a Euroleague Cup or something.

  • Jose

Peja’s contract might’ve been nice to trade for Melo, that woulda been epic right there but idk what Denver woulda got outta it other than cap room

  • rich

this aint too bad of a trade

  • ktokyo

the Raps love their Euros. Actually, they should just pay their team in Euros. That’s where all the money is going.

  • bnets

Hornets will then buy out Marcus Banks then get Eric Dampier. And Jack gives Hornets get a better back pg next to CP3 than Bayless cause he`s only a scoring pg which they dont need. In all this, Hornets are gettin ready for playoffs.
As for the Raptors, they are goin to trade players except Bargs, startin a rebuilding process

  • Pharoah

Youth movement for raps in full effect.

  • burnt_chicken

All the idiots posting about how TO loves their Euros blahblah should realize that this trade is for BAYLESS and CAP ROOM/RELIEF. And then they can go back to sucking on mommy’s shrivelled titties and leave the sports talk to the big boys.
Oh, and know how many Euros are on the Raptors roster, idiots? FOUR–and that’s counting Peja–(but not Barbosa) out of FOURTEEN. So shut up, please.

  • uv

Youth movement? Peja is older than everyone on the raps lol.

  • Shem

DUMBASSES, Peja is a 15 mill expiring contract do you really think we want him for him? We want him for the cap room he ll give us.. ignorant idiots

  • Towelie

I don’t get it…why would you trade away Collison, a solid backup behind Paul, then acquire Bayless, who has more to prove (imo), then get Jarrett Jack…someone explain to me please.

  • http://nicekicks.com Meloman2.0

People are so focused on Peja…. but Peja is not what the Raptors gain with this trade. Bayless will flourish and be the starting pg b4 the season is done
