Spike Lee: God Willing, Carmelo will be a Knick

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Though he doesn’t have an official position with his beloved Knicks, the press often turns to the team’s most famous (and visible) fan for his opinion on all critical matters.

Spike Lee is convinced that Carmelo Anthony will end up playing in Madison Square Garden once he extracts himself from Denver.

Of course, it is generally accepted that New York is Anthony’s preferred destination, so this isn’t exactly groundbreaking insight or that far-fetched of a prediction. Lee also used the opportunity to slyly promote his latest documentary.

From the NY Post:

Knicks season-ticket holder Spike Lee, from his seat on celebrity row [Saturday] night, acknowledged his friendship with fellow Brooklynite Carmelo Anthony and delivered his wish for the coming year. “I have just one sentence for you,” Lee told The Post before the Knicks’ 100-95 loss to the Trail Blazers in their home opener. “Carmelo Anthony will be with the Knicks if God is willing and the creek don’t rise.”

An old saying meaning a goal will be achieved as outside forces do not wreak havoc, “If God Is Willing and da Creek Don’t Rise” is also the title of Lee’s latest documentary on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Following the Nuggets’ season opener, Anthony gave the strongest hint yet of his desire to bolt town: ”They want to sit down and talk, but my thing is it’s way beyond this year. It ain’t got nothing to do with the new GM, Josh, the players. For me, I feel it’s a time for change. If I do nothing now, I’m never going to do anything. I feel like my time is now to make a decision if I want to leave or if I want to stay.”

Knicks fans can only hope that God will be on their side once ‘Melo is a free man.

i honestly dont see him doing that much to help the knicks. this year anyway. he doesnt suit run and gun basketball and the knicks are gonna struggle for the playoffs without him so what, they make 6th/7th seed with him and get knocked out in the first round by orlando or atlanta/boston? hardly worth the money in my opinion. he should go to houston that would be a nice fit and theyre actually already on the cusp of something nice

Gotta love Spike Lee. I just wonder who the Knicks would have to part with in order to get Melo to NY. So it was the summer of LeBron but will this be the season of Melo?

  • True Talkage

Knicks will grab melo, and then clean up in order to pick up Chris Paul when he becomes a free agent.

  • http://ohlaglambam.blogspot.com Zabba

    He should seriously consider Miami.

  • kenNY

is it just me or has Lebron personally perverted the word ‘decision’? I shudder anytime I hear or read about it.

  • IHaveADream

Knicks still won’t be winning as long as the Heat and Magic are around. So who cares? And is anyone investigating to see if Melo is really sending messages to the Knicks through Spike?

  • http://gmail dirty frank

I don’t think God cares where Carmelo plays.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

Seems to me that the Knicks biggest issue right now is interior defense and rebounding.

  • NJ4Life

Keep deluding yourself NY. We don’t want any bandwagon fans in Brooklyn when Melo’s puttin up 40 for the Nets.

  • ImNotRacistIfIHateYourMovies

I hate spike lee his movies suck.

I love how Knicks fans think playing for the Knicks is some life-long goal for players playing today. Unless you actually live in Ney York, NOBODY cares about the Knicks. The Knicks haven’t been relevant since the days of Ewing 25 years ago. And even those teams didn’t win anything. And to be honest, when Ewing was there, it’s not like they were some exciting team that captured nation-wide attention…they were still only relevant to New Yorkers. So a majority of the players playing today grew up not thinking twice about the New York Knicks. So I find it hilarious when all these New Yorkers say stuff like “He’s either going to Lakers, Boston, or New York.” You guys lump your decrepit team, that have never won anything, in there with multiple championship winning dynasty teams. Amare is the first and last star you’ll get. Stop this nonsense for every free agent that hits the market. No one wants to trade their superstar for Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari. Just had to get that off my chest.

    In’sha Allah, indeed.

  • Fat Lever

Hahahaha, Diesel. Very true. Tell em why you mad!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Diesel, your last line is exactly why the deal hasn’t been done, yet. They need to rope a 3rd team (w a “star”) into joining the fray.

That is unless it was 11:58 PM EST the night before the trade deadline.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    Lol@ Diesel’s comment

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Knicks fans forgive him for the sucker punch on Mardy Collins?? I know if a rival player did one of my home teams players like that, He would be booed everytime he entered our arena for the rest of his career..

  • Abaci

C’mon Melo do the right the thing! (Now on blu ray)

  • http://www.twiter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

@Diesel I understand where you’re coming from, but I think its the media more than the Knick fans that have created that perception of NY. Knick fans just want their team to be good, thats the bottom line. They don’t think they’re owed good players or player should want to be there. The media are the ones that call NY the mecca of basketball and all that other nonsense. And Melo himself said NY was one of his preferred destinations, NYers didn’t make that up. SO really I think your beef is misplaced.

  • Abaci

    CRAP *do the right thing

  • cadmus

the empire is definitely on melo’s mind.

Each day that draws closer to the 2011 NBA trade deadline the Nuggets lose leverage, while the Knicks position becomes stronger. Should Stan “I’m allergic to luxury tax, but not buying more pro franchises” Kroenke be stubborn about it, and this goes all the way past the trade deadline, Carmelo likely won’t even want to do a sign and trade next summer for the extra year on his contract, due to too much bad blood created by Denver’s ownership being so bitter towards Carmelo for wanting to “keep his options open.” And let’s be real, Denver won’t be able to franchise tag Carmelo next summer (Kroenke PIPE DREAM), should the NBA come out with a new CBA that has a franchise tag, because Carmelo will likely get grandfathered as an unrestricted free agent, and it should be that way for an 8 year NBA vet. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Kevin Garnett is fortunate the Timberwolves traded him to where he wanted to go, when he was in a similar position Carmelo is in right now with the Nuggets.

dfrance – I’ll admit that certain media members play up the New York aspect. Exhibit A: Chris Sheridan is just a glorified fanboy that’s as much a reporter as you and I are. But the media aren’t the ones posting comments on this site. Obviously, as with all things, it’s not all fans, just most. Melo also said he’d like to go to Chicago, but Vince Vaughn isn’t out there quoting the bible and praying for Melo’s decent upon the windy city. Everyone wants good players on their team. But there’s a difference between being the girl sending out subtle signals of interest and the needy troll who opens up by asking the guy about his feelings on marriage. BE COOL is all I’m saying NY fans.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@Diesel, Im a TrailBlazers fanatic and actually care about the knickerbockers, and im not from NYC…i´ve a soft spot for them, like the arena, the energy of their fans EVEN with a crappy team, its been 10 years, they deserve to be good again, THEYRE A TOP 5 HOMECOURT IN THE L…im hoping Melo gets there (obviously woudnt hurt me seeing the Thuggets a lil weaker).

  • jay

squeeze me, if I may, but GOD CHOSE MEMPHIS.

  • EtheKnickfan

New York isnt just a place its a historical state of mind. That and pizza just sux everywhere else. Ive visited many states and it always seems like the locals aspire to see NY at least once in their lives. Also for the price of garden tickets Spike should be asking God to play pg.

  • EtheKnickfan

Ask God for Chamberlain Ask God for Chamberlain Ask God for Chamberlain Ask God Ask God for Chamberlain for Chamberlain

Speaking of New York-style pizza, I just had some for lunch with an ice cold Aquafina to wash it down. Nothing beats that first bite.

  • MusketeerX

Melo understands the only way he stands a chance of winning a ring in the next 5 years is to create a championship team.

Miami already crushed one of the best teams in the East and they haven’t been playing together for more than a month (including preseason). There will be some ups and downs this season, but by this time next year they will be practically unstoppable.

CP3, Melo and Amar’e may not be enough to dethrone them, but it stands a better chance than the Nuggets will have…

Plus, if you do win a ring in NY, you become a basketball legend.

  • Hammer

If god is willing and the creek don’t rise,we will cease 2 hear ANY melo-trade scenarios till something is official. I swear 2 god, this is worse than the lbj watch. Sick and tired of it all ready. Every1 needs 2 just SHUT…THE…F**k…UP bout it. Yes,u 2 spike

  • Rich

It doesn’t matter who the Knicks get. They’re the Knicks and all they do is lose.

  • http://www.twiter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

diesel- Honestly I don’t see any of that on this site. The article posted above that you’re referring to is just another example of the media asking a fan(who just happens to be a famous person) his thoughts. The God reference was a plug for his movie. He doesn’t honestly believe God wants Melo on the Knicks. No one asked Vince Vaughn anything because he’s not a known Bulls fan the way people know Spike is a die-hard Knicks fan.

  • bnets

The Bulls will get Melo & shun the Knicks making the Bulls beat the Knicks again hahhahaha

  • Naiym

Melo will leave Denver, adn THEY must trade him by the dead line, Why??? A LBJ scenario will be in full effect..A superstart draw, and huge player, will just walk leaving Den , a okay team , but NO hope or chance at post season play. I say if he doesn’t sign by All-Star…well there’s no way around it…no sign by All-Star trade him, but to NJ, cause Gallanari and Rudolph for Melo?? yeah right..that’s like trading your full size Snickers bar, for old lady butterscotch. Just get her done..And I’m SO TIRED OF NBA PLAYERS and thier psuedo BIG EGO CONFIDENCE..I miss the days when players stayed trying to fight for thier legacy a la…K Malone , Barkley, and Ewing…Aren’t you in the NBA, aren’t you the biggest and baddest…can’t you do it and make the other 13 guys around you do it too!! uhmm MJ did…yeah he did!….this crap makes no sense..Ol genetically modified super hybrid teams…give me a break. NBAs gonna be a frikin Monopoly a dat’s no fun!

  • Jose

God has nnot been to fond of NY these last few years, or he’s ignored em…we’ll have to wait n see

  • ClydeSays

What does NY have to trade? Galinari and Curry’s expiring deal (11 mil!!!!)? Wouldn’t Philly be a better fit? They could trade iggy and change. Brand would be a better fit with Carmelo. But neither team is getting out of the East anytime soon, so I dont see how that works for Anthony….

  • http://twitter.com/nbatalkandkicks Eduardo

Spike Lee probably knows more about managing Basketball than Isiah does.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jtrain73 Jono

Shut your mouth and play for the team that is currently paying you, the same team that is stacked 8 deep and represent your best window for a chip. That is of course unless you don’t respect the concept of winning.

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com don

As much as I’d love seeing Carmelo play for the Knicks, my spidey senses tell me to not get my hopes up high due to the fact that who really knows WHAT tomorrow brings, besides more Justin Beiber trending topics?

  • flash

david lee is the best thing that happened to the knicks and they let him go

  • http://www.nba.com Hey there

Hey guys is Orlando still in thie Melo race> Is Melo willing to sign an extension there?
