Stan Van Gundy: Dwight Howard Criticized Too Much

Dwight‘s coach once again goes to bat for him in the press, wondering why his guy supposedly gets nitpicked more than any other superstar in the L. The Orlando Sentinel reports: “There’s little question Dwight Howard is the best center in the league and one of the league’s most dominant players along with LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul. But there’s one discernible difference between Howard and those other guys, if you ask Stan Van Gundy: Howard gets criticized much, much more. His free throws. His perceived lack of a low-post game. His foul trouble. His turnovers. Many are fair criticisms — some, maybe not. But they’re always topics of conversation in the national media. ‘There’s more negative said about him than any of the other top guys,’ Van Gundy said. ‘He’s won as much as much of those guys, his team’s have beaten those teams head to head, and yet they find a lot of negatives. I don’t hear the negatives on LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. I don’t. But I hear the negatives on Dwight. I don’t quite understand why that is.’ Van Gundy continued about why Howard is targeted more than those other guys. ‘Maybe it’s a size thing. Maybe people are harder on that. But he’s a guy who clearly is the best guy in the league at his position, and has been. He’s still very young, he’s improving, he’s won, he’s a damn good person … I don’t understand why there are so many negatives on him in comparison to the other guys. I’ve always felt since I’ve been here that he’s taken more of a hit than the other people.’”

SVG can’t hear negatives about LeBron??

Lebron and Wade don’t get criticized? What planet has Van Grumpy been living on the past month? Those two have been criticized every single day since the start of the season and twice on Sunday. Has there ever been a day without a heat article its just getting so old. All I hear about Dwight is that he can’t shoot free throws and has a limited offensive skill set. Free throws, a fair observation, they are terrible. Offense, most people have been praising him for a slight improvement. Stan Van Jeremy should just be quiet.

I do agree with SVG on Dwight getting his game critized more. But, I think it’s because his flaws are so obvious. Most of the superstars in the L are good allround, but Dwight isn’t an allround great player. Sure, he’s a good offensive player and he can dominate. But, his offensive game is very limited, and the biggest reason he can dominate that much is because of his freakish athleticism.

SVG is full of ish…a lot of players and coaches today are too damn sensitive…make your millions and STFU…if you can’t handle the criticism, then find something else to do!

Dwight should stop smiling on the court. He’s a monster. Act like it!

U don’t hear negatives about LeBron? The world has been at this mans head since the decision. No doubt Dwight is the best center but thts by default. Look at the great centers of the past they didn’t have as many flaws in their game as Dwight does.

The negatives you hear about LeBron have nothing to do with his game, for the most part. I think with Dwight everyone see’s his potential and wants him to live up to it. He has the build, athletic ability to be so much more impressive than he is. I think it also has to do with how SVG utilizes him on offense that makes his flaws stand out. Play inside out with a dominant big, why does he need post moves if they don’t?

that is exactly right my friend

I agree with PapaBear that the Lebron negatives are about his off the court issues – not his skills – and that has really only started in earnest this month. For example, the press will praise Lebron as possibly the best in the NBA but rarely is his poor shooting mentioned or the fact that his post game is lousy for a guy so much larger and stronger than others at his position.

I think SVG’s complaint (which is less true this season) is that when the league’s other great players are talked about, their name isn’t immediately followed with “yeah, but…” Everyone has room to improve, but Dwight’s heretofore unreached potential seems to uniquely negate all of the things he HAS done.
