D’Antoni on Eddy Curry: ‘Do You Risk It?’

by Ryne Nelson

On paper, the Knicks could use another healthy body, especially a big one. But past cancers have a tendency to relapse.

But, as much as fans may hate to admit it, the Knicks could use Curry out there. It’s a tough call for Mike D’Antoni.

Marc Berman of the New York Post has the report:

Eddy Curry is ready to play, but Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni doesn’t think he is. Surprise, Curry and D’Antoni are on different pages.

Though starting center Ronny Turiaf‘s left knee is a chronic concern and rookie center Timofey Mozgov continued to regress last night, D’Antoni refuses to budge in suiting up the embattled center, who has warred with the Knicks coach for two-plus seasons.

Curry, meanwhile, is getting “antsy” and said he’s ready to rock.

“Yeah, I am. At the same we’re winning, and I’m not trying to disrupt that or disrupt anything around here,” Curry said. “It’s been a while since I played, but I haven’t been sitting around. I’ve been practicing, doing extra work to make sure I can get up and down. At the end of the day, it’s just basketball, what I’ve been doing my whole life. I don’t want to get into deserve or not deserve. I’m ready whenever he needs me.”

“Do you risk it?” D’Antoni said. “We’re playing pretty tight. We want to only do things when we’re sure. We got to get our record straight and can’t experiment right now.”

As always, there’s two sides to the coin: a) Give Curry a look if he’s actually healthy, and b) Playing Curry would send the wrong message to the rest of the team — the ones who work hard.

The best answer might be a compromise: Give Curry garbage time minutes, and quit the complaining.

give him some playing time..then ship his ass to denver to get melo already!!!!

  • doyouwantmore

LOL I’m ready to stop hearing about Eddy Curry now.

  • the nerve

another dude from tha chi always cryin. antoine walker another one.

  • Jake

The Knicks ruined Curry’s career. He was posting solid numbers when healthy, then all of the sudden they bench him and he starts getting called a team cancer. I’m sick and tired of the NBA right now, they ruined Iverson’s career, Curry’s, JR Smith’s is in danger, Kareem Rush….I could go on and if you don’t believe me you’re sheltered. There’s no excuse for gluing someone to the bench just because you don’t like them. Play the skilled players and don’t be vindictive coaches or GM’s.

  • the nerve

the gm/ coaches feel like that if players don’t do it on or off the court like they think it should be done, they fuk him up.

  • 2k champ

I cant believe homie had “the nerve” 2 dis the chi…thts why d rose conquering the league right now

  • the nerve

^^nah, i’m just clownin tha white boy crawfid.

  • vtrobot

“Boss, since you’re paying me $11.2 mil this year, I thought it might be in your best interest to let me show you that I’m capable of working now.” ?????? This is the most f*cked up story ever in the history of life. At first I thought the title referred to whether you risk Eddy’s (heart) health by requesting him to give some effort for the first time in his career. @ Jake: Yes, I’m sheltered. I would love to know how NY ruined the career that Eddy would have had. Did Eddy tell you this secret? Eddy is currently making more than Chandler, Randolph, Mason, Douglas, Walker, and Gallo combined.

  • Isaiah Anthony

Curry and Iverson did it to themselves, the league sucks because of them not the other way around. Go watch And 1 tournaments all day and stop crying.

  • http://www.diimemag.com Royal

SMH if Crawford was to call you “tha black boy(or whatever race you are) nerve” , then people would be calling for his head….calm down with the race talk

  • 80

Whenever someone gets tagged as lazy or problematic, he should work his ass off to get rid of that reputation. What I can’t believe is that all those guys you mentioned before, regardless of their skill and ability didnt do anything to reverse the perception the league and public have of them. Examples are countless and teams just don’t want to lose time with guys like that.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@Jake, what a fu(kin ridiculous sh1t to say you idiot fool!!! JRSmith, AI and Curry get paid MILIONS OF DOLLARS to be unprofessional, drink, smoke, eat a lot in Eddy´s case, to dont give a sh1t bout the fans or the organization who pays them WAY TOO MUCH…you stupid a$$ Jake, THEYRE THE LUCKIEST GUYS IN THE WORLD THE NBA salary structure is so flawed or else they´d have fired their a$$es long ago…when you put a list of 3 guys and the better pro is JRSmith you know smthing is wrong!

  • MikeC.

Nobody on the Knicks called Curry a cancer. The writer called him a cancer. Curry isn’t a cancer to the team, just the salary cap. He has a habit of acting in an extremely professional manner. If professional manner means showing up to training camp ridiculously out of shape every year, getting hurt on day 2, not being able to participate in preseason, spending most of the season trying to get into shape, finally logging some court time in February but quickly getting injured again, then promising to get into shape and reneging on the promise. Curry is not motivated to play NBA basketball.

  • MikeC.

    C’mon Dave. Touch it.

  • Towelie

lol Eddy Curry is a peice of NYK’s inventory.

  • ClydeSays

They won’t play him unless they get hit by the injury bug. EC is just an Expiring Contract right now. I expect him to get traded
    at the deadline.

  • ben

curry’s career was never “ruined” by the knicks, he had a huge set back in 07-08, isiah thomas’s last year as he finished laying flames to this once proud franchise. (yes, i realize isiah inherited a god awful situation left to him by layden, and wasn’t given a free reign to rebuild, but the self proclaimed drafting genius should have never traded draft picks like they were skittles). curry was a very solid nba player in 2007, a near all star. then, isiah acquired zach randolph, thinking 2 guys w/ great low post games could work well together. of course, he failed to realize that neither cared at all about defense. he went from averaging 19 and 7 (still paltry rebounding for a center) to 13 and 4. then, isiah got fired and at no point did mike d’antoni when inhertiing the job expect curry to be useless. he would certainly have been in d’antoni’s plans, had curry not showed up to camp so out of shape AND with an infection from a new tattoo (in excusable). so the knicks never ruined curry’s career, his littany of off the court issues (some, like the brutal murder of an ex lover, were not his fault) coupled with a lack of desire to really ready himself for this team and d’antoni, ruined his career…

i personally had the highest of hopes for curry when he came back last year rather thin, i barely recongized him, but they tried to force him into the rotation, and it didn’t work. at that point, it should have been on curry to dominate practice scrimmages, to do his best amare impersonation, showing d’antoni that he could roll of a pick as well as dlee could, and then slam it home.

and then this summer, after not going to vegas, being the 2nd to last guy into camp, and working out on his own down the jersey shore with a guy named john porter (who should really lose his job, liscense, livelyhood and all else), curry did not show up in shape, the weight was back.

he should look at teammmate shawne williams as an example of how hard work in practice will get u minutes in the game. curry feels his ready, well then he should go at it hard in practice, dominate, ask for run w/ the 1st team instead of amare, show that he can set the pick for felton and roll to the hoop and finish in a similarly effective manner. show that he can come out there w/ the same defensive intensity as turiaf…

if curry can do these things, show some wants, show some fight and hunger, and show that he is a broke man really in need of 1 more contract, then by all means take all of timofey mozgov’s minutes

Jake, kareem rush???????? Reaaaaaally????. How so? I remember he played well for lal early in his career. He hit many 3s in 04 wcf, one game he hit 5 or 6 I think. ……… Pringles man has to see what tthe fridge has in him, food. But maybe that food can help the team. One way to find out.

  • richard

imo the knicks always over pay semi garbage players are we still paying allen houston lol and passing on brandon jennings was a big mistake eddy curry might not be a good fit for mikes system imo it happens

@Royal: erbody think i’m black. why? hypocrite. all y’all racist

  • Fat Lever

Hahaha, Jake with possibly the most stupid post of 2010. Is playing Curry going to automatically improve this team by 10 wins, 5 wins? Hell no. Let his @$$ sit on the bench, he didn’t want to put in the work before when he had his chance.

  • http://www.diimemag.com Royal

Nerve: I also said “or whatever race you are”…

  • the nerve

yeah, but u thought i was black 1st right? now tell me why u would think that? i’m being for real for once.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ Run’n'Gun

D’antoni doesn’t know what to do with guys who are taller than 6`11″; just ask Darko Milicic. Oh wait!

Although it exist everywhere, racism is more commonly associated with people from the south and not the north. But of course if you’re not — at the very least — reasonably intelligent, then you wouldn’t know that.

  • the nerve

yeah ok. the northeast are undercover racists. Massachusetts. Boston Massacre. Obama getting drunk w/the racist cop and the professor. im surprised u seem not 2 b hip 2 that. u know, given all of your irish slave master history.

@ the nerve-BOSTON has more diversity than SOME of the states FYI. Racist people exist everywhere and most of them from down south, KKK. The Carolinas, E n W Virginia’s, Kentucky. If you talking about the 70′s then your right and cops well they are all racist in my eyes. Where is you from that aint exactly the racist type? I think you watch too many movies. Maybe you need to get out of state and see the world!

Does actively seeking internet fights qualify as “dumb@$$edness”? Hmmm… Oh well, I guess looking in the mirror everyday and seeing the face of complete loser who is going absolutely nowhere in life leaves one with inner demons, pent up aggression, and a level of immaturity equivalent to a classroom full of 10-year-olds.

  • the nerve

    @the nerve:
Calm down there, cowboy. The word “groupie” is being used loosely on this board. I was not particularly referring to you. I saw the word, and it made me think of the song.
As far as being a “fence jumper”…
I would not call it that, exactly. It is more or less being a “company guy”.
    Nothing wrong with that.
And, what positives are you REALLY gaining with these attempts?

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

As the first graph of this post states, “…past cancers have a tendency to relapse.” I couldn’t agree more.

  • the nerve

u know crawfid, u sayin i ain’t goin nowhere in life. its funny cuz alot of yall thought james tha balla was this and that b4 yall found out what he really do. u judging books by they cover. so, what that say about u? r u at yer peak? is this az far as you going? im tellin u son, u slowly losin some cred jiving w/me. u still think i know u.

I know you’re a “Stan” of mine, but how far and where I’m going in life should be the least of your worries. What I eat don’t eat make you s**t… And you’d be better served worrying about where your own life is headed if you constantly come to the comment section of this, or any site to start random internet fights with people. And you know something else nerve, you’re right. I am losing cred by “jiving” with you. I look incredibly stupid going back-and-forth with someone who is so INCREDIBLY stupid. It’s been fun shawty…
