Kevin Garnett Injures Leg, Exits Game (Update)

by Tzvi Twersky | @ttwersky

With 2:38 left in the first quarter of tonight’s Boston vs. Detroit game, Ray Allen sliced through the lane before hitting Kevin Garnett with a perfect lead pass. The 34-year-old completed the play with an easy dunk. Somewhere between taking off and actually throwing it down, Garnett suffered a non-contact injury to his surgically repaired right leg.

Minutes later, after grimacing on the bench while trainer Ed Lacerte looked him over, KG limped his way to Boston’s locker room. X-rays on the leg came back negative, but the 6-11 big won’t return to tonight’s game. As of now, according to Woj, he’s scheduled to undergo an MRI Thursday morning.

If the injury turns out to be moderate, this will be much ado about nothing. But if it’s severe, which judging by Garnett’s facial expression on the bench it may be, the Celtics may have just ceded their No. 1 contender status in the Eastern Conference.

Stay tuned tomorrow for further updates.

UPDATE: After the game, the Celtics announced that the injury was to KG’s calf and not his previously injured knee. He will miss a few games, but the outlook is much more optimistic than it was a few hours ago.

  • William

Apparently he fist bumped everyone but Charlie V before the game, don’t like seeing anyone injured but maybe it is karma…

  • Angie

    I pray for Kevin Garnett!

  • MikeC.

Sounds like the same thing that happened last time he hurt his knee. He went up for an easy dunk in Utah and hurt it on the way up. Hopefully it’s just a strain and nothing serious.

  • Metrobus

Sucker twisted his knee on the way up, watch closely. His foot is going one way while his upper leg and knee is going the opposite. Karma is biatch! As for the celtics and their fans, now they’ll have another excuse when they get SCHOOLED by the HEAT come playoff time. Bunch of old f@rts! Give it up already

  • slamfan4life

without him and rondo…………..wow gluck beantown!

Calf, hmm? Thats what i first strained before i aggravated it and tore my heel weeks later. Take time to heal, Big Ticket.

  • hobbes

damn since i’m recovering torn ACL injuries myself, really feel bad for Da Kid

  • Eddie

Damn KG be out like Dudley from Diff’rent Strokes.

  • http://www.kwapt.blogspot.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

Looks to me like he strained the calf while pushing-off to grab Ray’s alley. Let’s hope it’s not a major setback. Unless of course you’re a Celtics hater.

  • JTaylor21

Shame on all you clowns that are happy and talking about karma. You never wish injury on someone and all those who do will get ya issue. I hope KG is fine and that this is only a minor setback.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Bummer.. Hope they dont try to RUSH him back, gonna need him 100% after all star weekend and into the playoffs.. Get well, Kage..

  • Michael

    tmac balled in this game.

  • showtime24

as laker fan i hate the celtics but it always sucks wen good players get hurt

  • Rabbitman

    and it begins…..

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

Why we praying for Kevin Garnett? Dude hurt his leg. Why don’t we pray for people with more serious injuries, damn…

  • http://shinefluid@aol.com just bcuz

didnt look that bad…honestly i think he will be alright…it wasnt a knee or anything. it was a muscle

  • greg

he will prolly b okay. looks like all the prayers for tmac are working tho he had a great game

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

    strained calf huh? …….
jukai, people can only have one prayer at a time?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I get Jukai. Praying for Garnett’s injury seems over the top since it’s not life threatening. Nothing is wrong with it but it seems a little extra.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Not to be outdone in the spotlight, Bosh starts to hit himself in the knee with a hammer.

  • http://psp2423@yahoo.com Eboy

Yes this is the Heats time to shine and rise up in the east!

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

Tarzan: Nothing is wrong with it as long as yer praying for all the people with AIDS and cancer and debilitating physical diseases and genetic defects… it’s a calf injury, for chrissakes. He’ll heal. He’s not going to lose a leg. We’re going to pray for him so HE CAN GET BACK TO PLAYING BASKETBALL. That’s way over the top.

  • http://slamonline The D Train

I’m just sayin’, I love the smell of girl’s feet, and sometimes pay fat chicks to spit on me.. A little perved, but thats just me…. I love you all!!

  • Ansonpanson

  • EJ

I’m kinda happy for this, even tho I’m injured too.

  • hoodsnake

Its not like he will go broke if he never gets healthy. And Go HEAT!

  • ClydeSays

Hope it really is just a calf or knee strain. KG, take a seat. You deserve a break…

You are the Alex P. Keaton of SLAM.
    I’m a winner. Psshh. lol

  • benno

gotta love kg, showed how he was a true proffesional last night charlie v shoulder barged him- Get well soon kg!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/_K_O _K_O

calf injury? no chance. Ya don’t cringe like that with a calf strain…and the takeoff was all around awkward on his right knee. Here’s hoping its a mild short-term thing

  • marc

Did anyone else notice that tayshaun grilled kg when he got fouled? lol. Good thing its just a calf strain though.

  • Reign

KG has always been 1 of my favorite players, it hurts 2 see him get injured every season. Wish him and the Celtics the best

  • ErnieD

Looked pretty painful. I get so much as a cramp in my calf muscle and I’m wincing like KG. Agreed, I’m soft.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

No sympathy from this corner of the globe. Bah, humbug!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Jukai
it doesn’t seem strange to you that you think praying for garnett is ok only if you pray for people with more serious problems but you didn’t see the point of bringig up more serious crimes when discussing vick?
Seema like your saying that focusing on garnett for prayer when there are so many other worthy things to pray about is stupid.
Kind of like focusing so much outrage on vick when there are bigger crimes and injustices.

  • http://sjfklfsl.com Jukai

@allen: No, actually those two things seem totally unrelated at every angle I can think of. Maybe you can elaborate?
My point was Garnett doesn’t need your prayers, while I believe that Michael Vick really did need to be incarcerated.
