Kobe’s Teammates at Fault for Him Over-Shooting?

Everyone realizes that KB24 fired too many times (and inefficiently to boot) during the Lakers‘ third-consecutive loss last night (and he’s been gunning quite a bit of late), but Phil Jackson places the blame on the supporting cast for constantly looking his way instead of smartly feeding the post. From the OC Register: “Bryant made plenty of poor decisions Tuesday night, including not finding Gasol more often. But as Jackson tried to explain to reporters after the game, the onus is and always has been on Bryant’s teammates to do something productive to prevent him from lighting his own fire for energy to ride to victory. ‘Kobe’s going to come out there and attack if no one else is aggressive enough,’ Jackson said. ‘I always say, ‘If you feed him the ball, then you’re responsible for a lot of what’s going on.’ The simplest way for the Lakers to shake that bad habit? Reprogram themselves as a team that will go to Gasol every single night, appreciating how good he is at creating easy shots for himself and his teammates. Yet this remains a team – even with Gasol’s ridiculous efficiency early this season – ever-ready to fill supporting roles for Bryant, not Gasol. ‘That’s a problem for us,’ Jackson said.”

I thinks it’s a little bit of both. Kobe has been chucking a little bit, but when the team overall is struggling (including Pau in the past couple games) it’s Kobes duty as the leader to try to will his team to victory.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Isn’t their whole team shooting 40% over the last three games, led by Bean’s pretty crappy fg percentage?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Pau has been shooting the ball pretty poorly lately and playing very lackadaisical on defense. But the lakers shots havent’ been falling. Anyone notice the same teams the put LA on this losing streak also beat Miami?

  • T-Money

I see what Phil did here. That quote wasn’t for the role players but Kobe himself. It was his way of telling him to pass to Pau w/o calling him out. Smart.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

Hasn’t Kobe already proven that he can function as a playmaker with good results in the past? No offense, but I smell BS here from Phil. I don’t get it; if you feed the ball to a chucker, it’s you’re own damn fault if he shoots you out of games? So…Kobe’s a chucker? Is that what he’s…oh. Well played Phil. Well played.

  • JTaylor21

This is what I’ve been saying the whole time. Kobe needs to stop trying to be the hero all the time and allow Gasol to get more shots. Gasol shooting in the paint is way better than Kobe taking a fadeaway turnaround jumper fading out of bounds. It’s amazing that people labeled AI a ball-hogger when Kobe’s notoriously worse.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

lol T-money beat me to it

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@Jtaylor…watch the game and not just the boxscore. Only reason he starts chucking is bc players like Artest and Gasol get off the poor starts and have not been producing lately.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

    Yeah, feed the Spaniard.

  • http://www.slamonline.com melvin ely

Kap, only reason he starts chucking is cause he feels like it. Kobe’s got to be the most evolved player the league has right now; He’s adaptive enough to be either a facilitator or a go-to guy at any given point of the game. He’s had success being both, games when he’s had 12+ assists and other with 40 points. The biggest knock on him is he can’t mentally adjust quickly enough to fit his team’s needs, and the coach has to go all psy-ops to relay that to him.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I see your point but the other players have been shorting poorly while wide open and we all know how impatient he gets with teammates. You gotta take the bad with the good.

  • http://www.slamonline.com NickthaQuick

I had a $20 bet JTaylor would be quick to label Kobe a ball hog, selfish etc etc. Gasol hasn’t been playing well either the past few games. He’s been missing shots in the paint, playing below average D, getting stripped/blocked but his rebounding has been solid. The bench has been missing shots too and there hasn’t been any consistent scorer besides Kobe who ends up taking more shots, some questionable. For this to be portrayed as Gasol doesn’t get many touches is a far from the truth.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Perception is a motha.

  • JTaylor21

Nick, am I right or am I right? The man’s a great player but an unselfish player he is not.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Thanks NickthaQuick. I’m glad someone watches the games and not just the boxscore.

  • kobesBESTfriend

let Mamba chuck all the shots he wants…we all know the west is a cakewalk this year…let him get his mvp #s so he can have the hardware that has been unjustly given 2 queen James the last 2 years in late may…besides the rest of the lakers look bored out there besides Shannon Brown

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kobe can do what he wants. Gasol needs to step up defensivley. He made Hibbert look like a number one draft pick and made Darko look like Joe Dumars really is the GM of the Deacade with that pick. Also Gasol sometimes has problems posting up on stronger players who will muscle him out of his position on the court. Kobe does take shots, but what would you rather your star do pass the ball to people already struggling or try to be a HERO. Its Kobe team and he will do it his way, but I need all of the Laker players to step up. Because Brown, Blake and Barnes has won some games Lakers should have lost to and defense is lacking thats why Bynum is needed back, because Gasol is still soft. BOOK IT!!1

  • EJ

I watched last night game on League Pass, and Kobe was HOT in the first quarter and a half, but then he went all Iceman, and not in a George Girvin kind of way. The problem is simple: Kobe was the second banana on the 1st three-peat, and at the beginning of the season alot of people were talking about Gasol being MVP, and he just won’t let it happen to him again. He must be no. 1 at all times. So he rather throws up shots, than sharing them with Gasol. Kobe is a great player, and all of ‘em have their weaknesses, sharing is his.

  • Jahmai

What the hell? This the second time I posted something this day that has somebody else’s name above it! This time it’s EJ, last time it was LeoneL.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

    GTFOHWTS Jahmai…

  • unrel

if you’re role on the team is to score.. you’re not a ball hog.. i’ve never called kobe, AI, MJ, even orlando t-mac or whoever a ball hog.. because their F’n role is to score.. so, they will shoot.. just because you shoot a lot doesn’t mean you’re selfish.. it’s what asked of certain players.. technically, then.. nash/cp3/young j.kidd.. were ball hogs because they controlled the ball for 90% of the time.. right?.. where’s ed lover at?.. come on, son..

  • Jahmai

    @Kap, dude I’m 100% serious. I don’t know wtf it is.

  • unrel

i’ve watched almost every lakers game for the last 10+ years.. and when shaq left.. regardless of who was playing with kobe.. at times.. had lapses of ‘kobe watching’.. give him the rock.. and stand around.. even fisher does it at times.. and they’ve played together (almost) their whole careers.. so i know what PJ is saying.. so yes.. he’s reminding the whole squad, including kobe, to go inside-out.. and reminding the rest to not ‘kobe watch’.. is it a problem?.. no.. because the lakers will come out the west.. it’s just fine-tuning team chemistry..

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

jahmai, it’s been a known issue for over a year now. random info will show up in your box. still waiting on the fix..

  • MUBWAR

Can we just to come to conclusion that Kobe sucks or is that only my opinion?

  • http://slamonline.com JL

anybody who says kobe sucks is just being a troll and doesn’t know basketball. he has his faults but he definitely doesn’t suck.

  • Cizzo

Kobe is coming out to win games, bottom line! We already know what the Lakers are champs……….

  • MUBWAR

Hey JL it’s like people calling Lebron queen James. After all the 30-9-9 he droped, original cavs fans and bandwagon Heat haters should just shut the **** up.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Kobe gets his teammates involved by creating ample opportunities for offensive rebounds.

  • Jackie Moon

Kobe, he’s not perfect … just the best.

  • Airnest

    Vintage Kobe FTW!

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Ive said it before, and jahmai said it too, kobe saw what pau was doing early, and heard mvp talk. No way in hell will kobe let himself be no 2 again. Even if going thru pau is whats best for the team, which it is as phil says. …… I see all you lal fans saying the west is a cakewalk, better check the standings, and see whos playing great. Spurs=champs in 11

  • Jackie Moon

Yep, because Kobe will do anything for the glory, even sacrifice the win, and the only time the Lakers win is despite Kobe … did I get that right?

  • http://Egotastic.com Michael

Kobe is who he is. Sometimes he shoots to much, sometimes he over facilitates, it usually evens out in the end. It’s been 14 years it’s getting boring to talk about.

  • kc

in other words…. kobe is a gunner, he always has been and always will be.only way to stop a gunner from gunning is to not give him the ball.

  • Hideko Cross

This blame game indicates clearly to me
that they lack in sense of unity and harmony, and I think it’s the most important in teamwork.
I still think if the Lakers(or any team) learn such thing as rebound(both offensive and defensive) they will score much better.
All in all I recommend that each player treats every ball like this is the only ball we have, and I mean each and every single ball.

  • cobra60

when he shoots the same number of shots and they win not a sound. i would like them to beat undefeated but i’m so glad they are not, they would be so arrogant proably headed for a downfall. Remember they bring their A game when they play the LAKER’S.
    I love LA Lakers.

  • Akber KASSAM

Kobe Bryant is one of the best players of LA LAKERS. No other players from any basketball team can match with Kobe.

People don’t seem to remember MJ shooting a huge percentage of the teams shots. Ho Grant and Scottie complained about it one time in a book. One game, MJ hardly took any shots in the beginning of the game sorta saying like ‘I shoot too much, I shoot too much, look what happens when I don’t’ I think thats Kobe’s state of mind. Like he’s shot the team to wins plenty of times and guys like that feel like hey, if your teammates aint clicking, I’m the resident gunner, here we go.

  • http://www.slamonline CeeGee

LeBron: Call Kobe. I’m sure he can give you some tips on how to conduct yourself in a hostile environment.

  • http://www.slamonline.com NickthaQuick

The thing about Kobe (and many other elite scorers) is that they feel that they can score at any time at will. If their teammates are struggling to score then it’s their responsibility as the star player and gazillion dollar contract player to bail them out. Sometimes this means they shoot more and try to lead by example. Sometimes it means doing everything neccessary to win the game. MJ was the same way back in the day. He wasn’t always down for the triangle/team work thing. He once told the coach(not sure if it was Phil or Doug Collins) that it had better work or he’ll start jacking up shots. I would much rather see Kobe shooting more when his teammates clearly are struggling to score than for him to be passive and passing more with little or no success. Sometimes he ends up shooting the Lakers out of the game but in many cases, he ends up winning the game for them when they would have surely lost it. I can live with the few losses that come with wins that he sparks. Don’t always agree with his shot selection but who are we to decide.

  • Walter

I think the Laker’s have no problem . The thing that show’s is the Laker’s are bored . They are banged up , Andrew Bynum is still out . In the beginning of the SEASON the new bench guy’s did click . I saw Gasol a little tired in the last 3 games . But look who they played so far (so so team’s). The Spur’s will lose soon , I think the Laker’s only problem is Heath .It’s a long 82 game Season .It’s not even All Star Break yet . GO LAKER’S

  • http://bleacherreport.com enut4eva

What a lot of people don’t realize is that home games vs the lakers is like their championship, Conley had a once every 30 y 30 game night artest wants Phil to approve of him, fisher is too old and is their because of mamba, Gasol is scared of his brother and Kobe doesn’t need to take less shots he needs to drive more scared to reinjure himself he settles for outside jumpers. Kobe is the smartest “I said it”,basketball mind in the game for the last 6 yrs his game has matured he is sacrificing his stats to allow his team to evolve(backtoback champions) three game losing streak nothing but a mere frustration and stealing a little media time from the southbeach gLee club. Nobody AND I MEAN BODY CAN GO INTO LA AND WIN 2 NOR BEAT THEM IN A 7 GAME SERIES WIG BYNUM BACC R ANY OF THESE GAMES TRULY COMPETITIVE (NO) SO SPIN WHAT U WANT TO WRITERS IN THE END IT’S THREEPEAT RING SIX BEAT SHAQ AND THE CELTS IN BOSTON GARDEN WORLD CHAMPS BELIEVE THAT U DIG!!!!!!!!

  • http://bleacherreport.com enut4eva

AND UNTIL THE INJURE TO RATLIFF WE HAD A DEFENSIVE PRESENCE OR AT LEAST A 7’0 BACKUP NOW WE HAVE NO INTERIOR DEFENSE AND ARE BEING ABUSED TO THAT POINT 9 PLAYERS PLAYER LAST NIGHT WITH GASOL AND IDOL BEING THE TALLEST, FATIGUE DEFIANTLY HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT ALSO TIME TO TRADE THE POPCAP AND A DRAFT PICK FOR VOSKUL OR FOSTER. WOULD SOLIDIFY THE MIDDLE ON THE SECOND SQUAD AND WOULD BLLLLOOOWW TEAMS OUT THE BUILDING….

  • Demi

I am a season ticket holder for the lakers and for the record kobe is a great bball player you either love him or hate him but you have to respect his game. This man on practice days is always 2 hours early for practice first there and last to leave. On game days its the same regimine. Kobe is always working on his game and has always gotten his team involved is it his fault the team cant self motivate kobe would care less who stepped up to shine as long as they come away with a win. As for Pau he is a great player but I think if he got alot more physical in the paint on offense and defense he would be a force players would not want to F with.

  • tatang

Kobe, never mind queen james` 2 mvp reg season awards— he`s proven nothing yet. NO RINGS TO SHOW

  • TIP

I understand what Phil was saying but when you say “feed him because he can make it happen”, what do you expect the supporting players to do? I can say Kobe can’t do it by himself, he does need the 4 other players on the floor with him and to address Phil’s comment, Kobe can also pass it on to Gasol just as easily as it was passed to. Him!!!!!!

  • victoria

Kobe and most of the starting team are
getting to the other side of the “Lake” so to speak. They’re getting older. Age will claim Kobe. That means Ron Artest, Derek fisher
, Kobe… even Odom and Gasol will be pass their prime. That’s why Shannon Brown MUST get his 3pt shooting back. Steve Blake needs to do more of what he did last night, and Matt Barnes has got to STOP MAKING SO MANY FOULS!! He was fouling out so much that Barnes just raised his arm w/out being told to by the refs. The Bench are our future
Lakers starting team. Come on- B’S.

  • Walter

I have seen team’s play the Laker’s hard here in regular SEASON . But no matter what is said the LAKER’S alway’s had problem’s in REGULAR SEASON , but they work on their Bench , and ROTATION in REGULAR SEASON , because the LAKER’S are best in the second half of the SEASON , and PLAYOFF’S . Their key is HEALTH , and ROTATION , in the regular season ,to get ready for the PLAYOFF’S .Most other team’s CHAMPIONSHIP are here in the REGULAR SEASON because they play so hard . The LAKER organization know the LAKER’S are banged up . They know the key is as long as every body is Healthy by the PLAYOFF’S . GO LAKER’S

  • Gabe

what the lakers need is a better and efficient point guard; however, even without one they are a stacked team. But, in my opinion, I think Pau Gasol should be the first option on the team because he is typically closer to the rim and has a higher field goal than Lamar Odem or Kobe Bryant. Bryant should be the second option on the team most of the time unless the switch in him is turned to turbo. But, even if Bryant misses, offensive rebounds can be obtained by Pau Gasol and Lamar Odem who will be more prepared for the rebound.

Anyways, Lakers should win it this year. Their team is too stacked.

  • skd

    This aint news

Kobe always been a gunner, aint never shot 50% from the field EVER.

In fact Brons rookie year was the only time his shooting percentage was lower than Kobe’s HIGHEST for a season

  • http://masterx1983@hotmail.com marchalmadness

    and Bron averages more assist
    and Bron averages more rebounds
and Bron averages more efficiency etcetera

only thing kobe has more is rings(thanks to his teammates Shaq and Pau mainly)
    Kobe in finals = choker

  • alfonso ponce-enrile

This works both ways…if Kobe’s team mates get a feed from Kobe they must decide on that instant if they are in a good popsition to make a good shot…sometimes a feed is not always a good feed…it may be a desperate way to get the ball off one’s hands for a lot of reasons…sometimes a feed is simply a “pause” to give a player more play options…I’d like to see the Lakers do their “triangle” with more quickness and rotation in the triangle…unfortunately and characteristically, the Lakers pause or hesitate far too long as though they’re not sure of what to do next with the ball giving the opponent’s defense the needed time to set up or break up the play…another way to put it is, the Lakers have a bad habit of “telegraphing” their offensive intentions…the opponents know that when Kobe gets a feed HE will go for it!…simple as that, and that’s why he’s double or triple teamed always…I’d like to see the Lakers really attack the paint area more…but that would mean more feed to Pau, Lamar, Matt or Ron…and to the Lakers in general, your shots off the dribble are so predictable…have any of you really studied seriously the ART of the head or shoulder FAKE? It’s always a good idea to FOUL BAIT your opponent’s aggressive defenders (Celtics/Heat/Nuggets/Thunders)…as NIKE would say, “Just Do IT”. Finally, the Lakers defense sucks…I’ve seen many easy lay ups as well as unguarded low posts…and after an opponent’s conversion, I see the usual three Lakers defenders under the basket dead on their tracks and just looking at each other as though saying, “I thought you had him covered!”….come on guys, you’re PROS and you do this for the money…we love and expect pros to play beautiful basketball the way it ought to be played (at best I’ve only been an amateur player)…if only you guys had the dedication and motivation of Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao whenever he gets up on that ring…and quite frankly, in the long haul he probably makes less money than you guys!…stay healthy and help each other when playing.

  • http://vihoops jayga

kobe is a selfish yall stop acting like yall dont know dat
it took him 13 yrs to start passing the ball=
to a person who dominates the ball so much
