Lower Merion High School Naming Gym After Kobe Bryant

Kobe‘s name will grace the walls of his old high school gym, after he donated a nice chunk of change to the school district. The Philly Inquirer reports: “A school official said Monday that the district had sold nearly all of the 1,100 tickets for Bryant’s Dec. 16 appearance at the dedication of the gymnasium bearing his name. This year, Bryant, the perennial all-star and face of the Los Angeles Lakers, donated $411,000 to the Lower Merion School District. The gift, the largest ever to the district, is to help fund ‘a series of inspirational, interactive, and educational displays’ at the newly completed, $100 million high school. The school board voted to name the gym after Bryant, citing not just his donation but a history of support for the school, whose Aces basketball team he led to a state championship in 1996. Bryant recently agreed to help raise more money by attending the dedication on a week when the Lakers come to town to play the 76ers on Dec. 17.”

Good gesture giving back to the school that helped make him who he is today. How long before a SLAM commentor finds something negative to say about this. My guess, not very long.

Cosign amir. 100 mil high school? Wow!

  • amir

no hate, because it is admirable that he gives back, but does a 100 mil school really need a 411k donation for displays? share at least some of that for afterschool care, books & computers for the schools in the innercity.

@arjae828 – Wilt Chamberlain went to Overbrook High School, which is also in Pennsylvania.

  • Jackie Moon

Overbrook is also in Philadelpia, like Lower Merion High

While genereous, Kobe’s contribution has fine print reading “This money will only benefit kids who refuse groupwork and do everything themselves on projects.”

  • JTaylor21

amir is right, why not use that on the education side not only on sports. Not everyone is going pro.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

The proceeds are to go to the Education Foundation of Lower Merion, a nonprofit formed four years ago to provide a new funding stream for the district. It’s not just going to athletics. Read before you criticize.

  • Jackie Moon

@Anton – Exceptions will be made if you have someone else help you, but you get most of the credit?

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

No doubt, I make my group better by pushing them away.

  • Remo Williams

@Jtaylor… read the article again… where does it say that the “series of inspirational, interactive, and educational displays” are being used for sports?

    chalk 1 up to idiocy

  • Pugz

It’s the way it should be. Go Kobe.

  • ab40

wow already?! in year 15 of his career? and donating to a school and an area that is one of the richest in the area. wow thumbs up kobe

  • T-Money

Nice! I have no idea how much building a school costs but 100 mil is a pretty sizeable chunk of change.
