OJ Mayo’s Father Arrested

WSAZ 3 News Channel has the details: “The father of a local basketball star is in trouble again with the law. Huntington Police told WSAZ.com that Kenny Ziegler was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Thursday … Officers say Ziegler was arrested after a short struggle. He’s charged with attempted murder on a police officer, fleeing in a vehicle, fleeing on foot, possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine and obstructing justice … Ziegler is 39-years-old. He’s the father of NBA star O.J. Mayo. Mayo played for Huntington High School and currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies.”

i gotta couple questions for yal.. why the hell would yal put this sh*t on here about mayos father? what the hell does this have to do with basketball? are yal just trying to embarrass and humiliate this man? this is ridiculous.. do yal feel the need to post personal matters of ppls lives like this for the sole purpose of getting a good read and making some money? wtf SLAM.. im so dissapointed with yal..
yeah so the dude may have messed up.. but do yal really have to post his mistakes on here? i mean im pretty sure he knows all by himself that he messed up and im also pretty sure that he doesnt need any help for SLAM in knowing that he messed up.. this is just f*cking immature and completely degrading.. and all for the sake of a good f*cking read.. and its almost christmas.. man yal are pitiful..no f*cking morals at all

Wow. This dude is gone for life.

  • Baller20

@c_cantrell good sh*t, my brotha. I completely agree SLAM. Nothing to do with actual basketball. This isn’t TMZ man. Ridiculous.

very disrespectful by slam posing this. If it’s not about basketball or a little info about players here ad there, we as fans don’t wanna hear about it. Now you guys shame that family for life with something that doesn’t concern us.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

agreed agreed, I continue to look sideways at some of the stuff yall are pushing out there. If it ain’t basketball we not really tryna hear it.

I just wanna say i’m really proud of the above commenters, it’s good to see that our society hasn’t devolved into celebrity obssesed people who know more about their idols than they do themselves. You guys show that you know this doesn’t have any place on this site, and you did it respectfully. Thanks for showing me their is still some good people in the world who don’t wanna exploit a man’s mistake.

    SLAM is GOAT.
Anyways, I KNEW Mayo had sh1t on his mind.
    I am a BEAST.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Alot of us might find this story a little intruding, but I think the reason Slam posted it is because if they didn’t, someone else would, and Slam doesn’t want to be second best when it comes to getting basketball related stories.. Which isnt a bad thing.. Slam keeps it real with the stories, doesn’t matter if they’re good (news), bad (news), or down right silly and pointless, I’ll still read them here..

  • Ray Smoove

Damn right this shxt wack SLAM. we dont care about this bullshxt thats just wack as hell to let everybody know about somebodys private life who’s young and is trying to make a living playing basketball.

    terrible, he’s a fool

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

This story is already out in open air anyway, why WOULDN’T slam make a story of it being that its related to a basketball player? Plus, a player’s father doesn’t reflect the type of man the player is, has nobody seen ‘He Got Game’?

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

@BossTerry I think the reason people are upset is because this is the exact type of thing SLAM used to distance themselves from. They prided themselves on being all about ball and being different from “other” sites (Worldwide follower anyone?) and they’ve really gone away from that in their effort to constantly provide content throughout the day.

I’m disappointed because a few years ago, SLAM would have called other sports sites out for posting this type of crap and now they ain’t no different.

  • Epic Win

SLAM is just reporting what’s going on. So stop hating.

  • pistol

This story is also reported on NBA.com, so put down your hatorade haters. SLAM is the king and this story goes a long way to me respecting OJ Mayo more, seeing that he made it in the world without a decent role model for a father.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I can see your point dfrance, I remember being in the 9th grade at the school library, and my buddy had a copy of Slam ish#1 and reading it while everyone else was using internet-less computers to study old dead guys. Slam has always been unique and different from other bball mags, especially when Scoop was writing. But over the years has become more mainstream and expanded with a website, and in order to keep it “fresh”, sometimes post stories that we can all see on our local news.. The stories in the mag still have the same “feel” as they always had IMO, but now with more followers then ever, some of use like to read about the dirt..

  • http://google c_cantrell

i dont give a f*ck what anyone thinks.. this is just completely uncalled for

  • T-Money

i agree with most of the commenters. SLAM has been TMZ’ing for a minute now. we all probably knew this story already but we come on slamonline for BASKETBALL-RELATED news. if at least it was about OJ than i’d kinda understand but this is not an NBA story, his dad is not in the public sphere.

  • the truth

c cantrell spittin it. This ain’t f*ckin TMZ

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Alot of yall are being two faced on this article. Other basketball online mags have the same article up. I actually read this article already on ESPN website. Slam puts up what everyone else puts up. It has been other articles that really had nothing to do with bball and no one got this upset about it. OJ Mayo has had the spotlight on him since middle school, so I understand why the next suppose big thing gets this air time. When Slam put up about Melo sister dieing it was the same thing. No one got upset, its the same as this. If you are a NBA star, then media will be there, so people acting like this article needs to come down need to find something else to complain about.

  • jeemy

Lol at the twits here saying that ‘Since other websites are doing it then Slam should do it too’. Have you sheep heard of independent thinking or are you all herd followers?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

OJ Mayo is 23 and his pops is 39. Word…

  • High School Hoops Junkie

Whether it’s an appropriate story to post here or not, funny thing is folks read it. You saw the headline, which was not in a secret code, and you still read the story… If you don’t want stories like this posted, then ignore it when you see the headline. If something is not in demand, it won’t be supplied. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!!

  • neaorin

I agree that nothing of value would have been lost if SLAM had just ignored this story, but I see nothing in Marcel’s summary that can be described as embarrassing or humiliating for the father.

c cantrell, People at SLAM are Journalists and reporters. These people are doing their job. This may not be relevant to basketball, but its related to an NBA player. Of course people want to know whats going on. If Mayo is playing bad, i want to know why and this could be a reason. Dont sit there bash at Slam. The person who posted this on SLAM might have been told by his BOSS to do so. Next time try not to be a dick to a person doing their Job. Merry Xmas

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

I love the soap boxing and the elevated ponies up in here.

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

I am apathetic whether this story should be here or not, but a few notes on the people sticking up for slam:
    1. SLAM has always tried to distance itself from others in the biz. Pointing out that the story is on ESPN and nba dot com is only proving the detractors right…
    2. Ignoring the story ISN’T going to help, actually commenting and writing criticism is.
