Pau Gasol: Lakers Need to Pound the Ball Inside

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

It’s not exactly time to push the panic button in Hollywood, but there’s definitely cause for concern in Laker-land these days.

Following their humiliating defeat on Christmas Day against the Heat, Kobe Bryant fumed and promised hell for his teammates once they hit the practice court. They were supposed to come out guns a-blazing against the Spurs during their showdown last night, and though things began on a promising note, the wheels came flying off in the second half and the Lakers were once again run off the court.

Pau Gasol — who only put up eight shots against San Antonio — thinks one of the team’s biggest issues is their offensive execution; namely, they’re not getting the ball inside enough.

From the LA Times:

“I don’t think we played the smartest game, put it that way,” Gasol said. “I don’t think we attacked smart out there. We’ve got to recognize what’s going on and understand where our strengths are against certain opponents and try to exploit them.”

“Whatever it is that needs to be fixed, you’ve got to do it all together,” Gasol said. “It can’t be an individual effort from nobody. It’s got to be all together, on a string, like a family.”

Phil Jackson agreed that Kobe Bryant’s 27 shot attempts against the Spurs’ swarming defense (coupled with 19 misses) were far too many, but once again, he pointed out that Gasol wasn’t nearly assertive enough and failed to play well.

It’s no secret that the key to the Lakers’ success over the last three years has been their dominant inside play. With Andrew Bynum‘s early-season injury issues, plus Gasol’s recent struggles, the team hasn’t been able to put this proven formula to full use yet.

The good news for the Lakers is that January is chock-full of relatively easy and winnable games, where the touches for Gasol and other bigs should be plentiful.

    This warms my soul. lol

This seams to be an annual “problem” for the Lakers… Gasol complains, Kobe jacks shots up… nothing to be worried about IMO

  • Morgan

Did they not have the same “issues” last season? Except it was Gasol coming off the injured hammy and (surprise surprise) Kobe taking too many ill-advised shots…up next will be the bench mobs inconsistant play and inability to hold on to comfortable leads..

Stop being in denial lakers have problems 24 looks a step slow and old and they have yet to beat any top tier teams These last two games meant something potentially deep playoff matchups the league is too good and too deep to turn it on and off this year

  • mp7three

In theory Pau is correct…but he has been crap lately. He is getting pushed out of the post, he is throwing away passes, and isn’t making shots around the rim. And defense is lacking also…just yesterday letting Parker score over him. Maybe the lack of touches is affecting his defense (aka Shaqitis).
Kobe has showed he can let the offense go through Pau with no problem…but that’s the Pau who finishes at the rim and isn’t getting outhustled and acting “tired”.

This is definitely a recurring problem for the Lakers. They lose whenever they stop feeding Pau. But their problems might go deeper than that. Kobe does look a step slow. He hasnt been attacking the paint, and has been jacking up too many bad shots during their recent struggles. But most troubling for me is how they’ve been blown out by every good team. Where is the fight? Where is the pride? They’re defensive effort has been atrocious this year. Unless they turn up their effort, especially on the defensive end, the Lakers are not going to repeat, despite the talent on their roster. At least it’s a long season. Who knows? Maybe they’ll just peak at the right time, and everyone will forget this rough patch. But the Lakers need to show urgency NOW to get to that point.

I’m an upset Lakers fan with 3 straight blowout loses. This same story pops up again and they seem to never play with urgency. Very maddenning for myself personally given fans tend to get emotionally invested in home team’s successes/failures. Xmas game was just the worst because Lebron just beat Kobe again. I’m convinced if Lebron could ever meet Kobe in championship that he would win. There were ample times before where Kobe can beat Lebron, but win/loss record don’t lie. I hate admitting something that’s true. Sure, Lebron shot himself in the foot, figuratively speaking, numerous times in the playoffs and failed to advance. But IF the stars aligned & Lebron vs. Kobe finals then Lebron would win. The truth does hurt.

excuses…Him and Odom got toasted by Bosh on Christmas. and Last night, he couldn’t even handle Blair, a man 5 inches shorter then him. Hey Pau, go borrow some toughness from Mark.

  • Hursty

Pau led the Lakers in assists. With 5. Their problems aren’t just on the defensive end.

    Duh. Now tell lobe.

you guys are panicing for no reason .. they neeed these loses to get motivation. last year it was fairly the same thing they lost to wolves, clippers, and okc in a row and they said they wont repeat..all team goes thru patches.. the diffrence in this team thier rough patch is ussally not in the PLAYOFFS..-unlike dallas, lebron, orlando, and the jazz..relax we can talk in april

    Pau knows basketball.

It’s funny how laker fans are still thinking that this team could turn on the switch anytime they wish and start beating good teams. Umm NO, it’s not that easy. Even though they struggled at times in the RS last year, they never were manhandled this badly by bad and good teams alike. When you get destroyed by the freaking bucks at home without their second best player and then don’t even look competitve vs two top teams, there’s something wrong. But it’s called la la land for a reason.

  • Stepfan

How does this man only get 8 shots up when he has DeJuan Blair checking him!!??????

  • wall-e

It’s funny how the Lakers have been babied by the NBA and have had by far the easiest schedule up until this point. They have failed to capitalize and are sitting on 10 losses. Kobe is being selfish Kobe as always, yet these brainless pundits call it leadership, hahaha. It’s not Gasol’s fault he’s not playing as well as he was during the beginning of the season. He needs someone to pass him the ball on a regular basis. He is their most effective and consistent scorer. If he only takes 9 shots to Kobe’s 27 there is something seriously wrong with the team and there will be absolutely no chance of a three peat.

Kinda getting tired of Gasol, and his pouty ways. You see it in his body language whenever he misses an easy shot, or turns over the ball, or gets muscled out of the paint and wants a foul called. It’s like he feels sorry for himself. With Fisher, I think he’s having to fight the same detractors every year, because he’s older, and each time being exposed by the faster or bigger PGs that he can’t contain. It affects him on the court. Fisher isn’t really effective unless he’s scoring, and when that’s not happening for him, you see how easily frustrated he gets. He starts forcing things, and charging his body into a player an attempt to hit them and still draw the foul. Jefferson knocking him over last night, was the icing on the cake; Letting Parker do what he wanted, not getting the ball, refs not calling fouls. I felt bad for him.

Gasol and Kobe really have been stinkin up the court in the last three games. And nobody on the bench has been hittin shots. But Lakers are havin problems on defense. they get leads in the first quarter and then when the other teams comes back its almost like they give up. i’m a pissed off lakers fan right now but i cant front the Lakers can turn it on whenever, they just really have to want it. I know thats cliche but its true

Is it just me, or this piece of news has been resurfacing two or three times a year since Pau Gasol was traded to the Lakers?

    Laker problems
Kobe has been shooting like sh*t these last games
Gasol has been letting anyone get to the rim and doesn’t contest a shot.
    Odom has no post moves
Artest is incosistent in the offensive end
    Fisher is always incosistent
Blake and Brown are hitting anything
    Bynum hasnt fully recovered
Barnes is the only Laker playing consistent ball.

When you win 2 straight chips getting to the postseason doesn’t seem like a challenge, when it actually is. If you don’t play consistently throughout the year you could find yourself in 6th or 7th and battling teams who want it way more. The Lakers just need to focus because if they just get their heads straight and take it 1 game at a time they are the best team in the L. You can’t think ahead and think you have a free pass to the playoffs just because you’re the champs.

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

I get the whole “Lakers did this last two years and were fine” state of mind, but in fairness, they did not struggle like THIS in any year they were championship contenders.

  • http://SLAMONLINE.COM LAKERSLEGEND

LAKERS ARE PLAYING SO POORLY IT SEEMS THE CLIPPER GAMES ARE MORE EXCITING LATLEY !!! CMON MAN

  • ryan

@Jukai: Your exactly right , sure they had losing streaks the past couple of years in the season but they werent getting their @$$ kicked in evrey game like this year. Two of them at home i might add.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Lakers are struggling, and it does look worse than the speed bumps of years past. Still, I wouldn’t panic if I were an LA fan. They’ve been there, done that. The pieces are still there, the talent, the system, and the coaching. I think they’ll be right there by season’s end once again.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

And I don’t blame Miami fans or Laker haters for any overexaggeration of these struggles either.
We (not Laker fans — I’m not one; just a happy hater) did that to the Heat. It’s fun to do. Carry on!

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

Tealish: I think there SHOULD be panic… I think that’s the entire problem with the Lakers to begin with. They all think “well whatever we’ll get it eventually” and there is no urgency. If I were you, I’d be worried by the LACK of panic.
