Phil Jackson Not Sure Rudy Tomjanovich is a Hall of Famer

Jackson takes a dump on Rudy T’s HOF candidacy and the Rockets‘ titles while MJ was watching Minor League curve balls sail by. He’s the best. From the Houston Chronicle: “Lakers coach Phil Jackson said that it was ‘wonderful’ that former Rockets and Lakers coach Rudy Tomjanovich was nominated for induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Jackson offered a less-than-enthusiastic endorsement. sked if he thought Tomjanovich was deserving, Jackson said, ‘We’ll see. I’m not on that committee. I like all the coaches to get a chance to go in.’ Jackson agreed with the argument that the Rockets’ championships were tainted because Michael Jordan was out of the league for the first of their title seasons and much of the next. ‘Definitely,’ Jackson said. ‘Without a doubt. Clearly, if the Bulls were whole, we would have won. It’s pretty much registered by now. When Michael played, we won the championship.’ Don Chaney, Tomjanovich’s predecessor as the Rockets’ coach, offered more of an endorsement. ‘He’s due,’ Chaney said. ‘He won two championships and was a great player. I’m wondering why it took so long.’”

I’m not seeing how Phil is “taking a dump” on Rudy’s candidacy. Also, if he gets in, wouldn’t it be kinda dope if the HOF made an exception to its rules and allowed Kermit Washington to introduce Rudy T?

  • http://www.iowsports.com/ Blue

@ Enigmatic: It would be awesome if Kermit Washington introduced Rudy T and Rudy punches the sh*t outta Kermit…and Phil could never have won a championship at any given point with a team like the 93-94 Rockets. He should get in…

For the record, I don’t have an opinion either way about Rudy T getting in the Hall. However, Phil bringing up could’ve/would’ve/should’ve about Jordan should be below him. I could sit here and make the case that Jordan’s body wouldn’t have been able to take on the toll of a 4th/5th consecutive run in the Finals…

  • riggs

so let me get this straight, he lambastes doc rivers for saying the celtics wouldve won last year if a key player wasnt missing, and then goes and say the same thing? stfu phil thanx.

  • Drew

There was no dump on Rudy by Phil. It’s the truth and we all say it. If Jordan didn’t get suspended for gambling the Bulls would’ve had 7-8 championships in a row.

  • M

F*** Phil, im getting tired of him talking ish. Im sure Rudy T would have loved to coach the best player ever on the planet, another one of the top three or four 2 guards ever in Kobe, the best big man of his era in Shaq Daddy, two more hall of famers in pippen and Rodman, and the best power forward in the league today in Pau

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I’m not sure Phil took a dump, but certainly did not endorse him. I’m not sure 2 rings makes you a HOF coach or not, wish there was some ‘formal’ standard to compare to. Plus Phil shouldn’t be talking, w/o MJ, Scottie, Kobe, Shaq he wouldn’t have any rings as a coach. the would/could/should stuff has no business in a game of w’s and l’s. I’m not saying Phil is/not HOF coach himself, but it’s clear he’s had arguably the best personell to work with than any other coach.

  • unrel

i don’t think he’s dumping on Rudy.. he said it was ‘wonderful’.. and he just agreed with the argument that if MJ played they would have won.. what’s he supposed to say?.. ‘No, if the GOAT played for us instead of baseball.. we would have lost’.. but be honest.. rudy t has back to back chips.. but is he a clear cut hall of fame coach?

  • LeBron de Con

hahaha you jus watch myself ballin v. cavs 4get phi…its bout myself

  • http://www.slamonline.com peter

The clearly we would have won comment reeks of sarcasm. Don’t get worked up fellas

  • MikeC.

I don’t know if Rudy is a HOFer or not, so I reserve comment on that. I will comment on Phil. Usually I think his verbal jabs are funny because he’s trying to manipulate a current opponent and he usually ends up winning the battle. To comment on another coach’s past achievements by saying they don’t mean as much is petty and should be beneath him. Saying that Houston wouldn’t have won if Jordan was playing is ridiculous. It’s probably true, but Jordan WASN’T playing. Each team in the league had to play the games that were on the schedule, and go through whoever was in their way in the playoffs. The Rockets did it and won a championship. Then they did it again. If Jordan was the reason all championships were won in the 90′s, what does that say about Phil as a coach?

  • MikeC.

^^ I think Phil is salty about the HOF process because Tex Winter isn’t in. Which is ridiculous since Tex adapted the Triple Post offense into the Triangle and gave Phil a great tool to use on his way to his own greatness. In my last post, I shouldn’t have said “what does that say about Phil as a coach”, but more like “what does that say about Phil as a person”? He seems to enjoy undermining other people’s achievements to make them seem lesser than him.

  • The Philosopher

Again, as the G.O.A.T., Phil can say whatever he wants…

  • burnt_chicken

that’s why they play the games, Phil…those rings were earned. Normally, I laugh at Phil’s digs, but this one just seems sour and childish.

  • ClydeSays

Is this Phil’s last year? I guess he figures he needs to get in all these digs before he the mics go away…

As far the Bulls could’ve won those titles, maybe, but any team that lost a close series, had a key injury or maybe just had bad luck or bad calls could say the same thing. You lost, take your lumps and stfu about it.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Phil is such a dick. Houston earned their titles. Chi had a great chance in 95, but couldnt beat orl. If mike was the end all be all for chips throughout his career, how come he only got 6? You cant just say if mike stayed, everything would have worked out for them to win 8 in a row. Would they have still got rodman? Kerr? Etc etc. and cosign nupe.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Thats defintely a dig. Whether he meant it in terms of Rudys qualifications for the Hall or not is whats up for debate. He’s basically saying the Rockets and Rudy got lucky because MJ wasn’t playing. It’s like people think the NBA was supposed to sit and wait to see if MJ would come back, because without him playing, winning a championship doesn’t mean anything.

@The Nupe, if 2 rings can’t get you in, does that mean that Jerry Sloan doesn’t deserve to be in the HOF?

  • Jackie Moon

    Phil, you meanie.
But I don’t think he said Tomjanovich was underserving, he merely said that the Bulls would have won the title instead of Houston.

  • jdubbs29

Phil responding to Rudy is like Jay-Z responding to Soulja Boy.

  • Heals

No knock on RudyT but there are a handful of much more deserving players and a couple coaches that should be ahead of him, but we all know how these HOF committees work (politics)…

  • Papa Smurf

Phil Jackson’s a joke. Rudy could just as easily say that Phil wouldn’t have coached a single championship team if he didn’t have the most dominant player in the league each year that he won.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

Phils Right. leave it be people. ahaha

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Mike C might be onto something. I’d be a little heated if my (well-deserving) mentor never made it into the hall too.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    Rudy T is a HOFer. That’s all

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Also Rudy won with lesser talent than Phil’s teams. I have one thing to say to those non-believers.. Don’t ever underestimate the heart of a champion.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Riggs: that makes so much sense, because here I was thinking who would be at par with Michael Jordan in his prime, and the first to come to mind was 2009 Kendrick F*cking Perkins. Bravo.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Oh shut the hell up already, Philly. Jordan WAS playing in ’95 and you got your @sses whooped by Orlando–the Rockets didn’t even NEED to play you. Is it me or does Phil Jackson get more and more annoying every time he opens his mouth for a quote? Rudy T won two titles with far worse overall teams than Phil has EVER had to coach. Phil wouldn’t have done sh!t with that ’94 Rockets team–just like he hasn’t done sh!t when he wasn’t given two future Hall-of-Famers. Now, 10 titles is obvious still 10 titles, but the guy needs to shut his trap once in a while.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Switch Jerry Sloan with Phil Jackson in those two Bulls/Jazz Finals match-ups and we’re talking about Sloan as the greatest coach in NBA history. Switch Phil Jackson with Rick Adelman in those Bulls/Blazers or Lakers/Kings match-ups during the early 2000′s and we’re talking about Rick Adelman being the best coach of at least this decade. Sh!t, Greg Popovich is a better coach than Phil Jackson imo.

  • Bayer

    Phil’s a hater.

  • lecram

anyone can tell me when phil became such a jerk? press seem to have found a golden mine on him by asking questions that shouldn’t be of his business and getting stupid answers … remember the Spoelstra’s case. Maybe he might just try to end his team losing streak

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Teddy is not just right, hes supercorrect. Way to go ted!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

This will be Phils last year coaching, …. until he heads to Miami next year. Gotta ride deem coat tails hey Phil???

  • Mariano

Phil was just lucky that he had so many HOF players on all of his teams, or else he wouldn’t be talking as much trash

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Oh jesus Phil, write another book already, you petty bastard.

  • flipnoyce

This is the guy that coached the Greatest baller in my opinion and goes to the Lakers,to coached SHAQ and Kobe. Retired after 3peat, Wrote a book that says Kobe’s uncoachable and then unretire back and says KOBE’s better than MJ just to kiss KOBE’s ASS. Why don’t you just retire now then so you can be in the ballot, I’m pretty sure they already got your name in it!!!

  • Tony

Phil can’t coach nor win when he doesnt have the best player in the league with him at that time. With the Bulls it was Michael, with the lakers it was Shaq, and with the current lakers its kobe. I hate the bastard

  • paul

    Cheap shots from Jackson.

  • JC

11 rings give you the right to say whatever you like !!

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

@JC: Well, Rudy Tomjanovich’s should be able to put in his ‘two rings’ worth…

  • ClydeSays

I don’t think 11 rings doesn’t give you the right to say WTF you want about other ppl’s accomplishments. But I’m sure Rudy & the rest of the NBA take Phil’s comments for what they are; Phil spewing freely after a few hits of prime weed. 11 rings or not, you won’t hear Bill Russell throwing whoever under the bus.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Here’s the thing though: I think Phil’s right. Did he have to say it? No. A-hole move nonetheless.

  • Cizzo

Phil lost cool points for hating on Rudy T… Rudy T is a great person on top of being a excellent coach… I don’t see Phil logic behind that comment besides negative press…………

  • Cizzo

where is Kermit Wasington? Phil needs on of those runnig punches like Rudy T caught, to knock that hatred out of him……..

  • Clark Rone

If Phil did not have Michael and Kobe on his teams 99 percent of sports fans would not even know his name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
