Post Up: In Cold Blood

Paul Pierce puts an end to the Knicks’ winning streak.

by Adam Figman | @afigman

Philadelphia 105, L.A. Clippers 91

The streaking Sixers continued their streaking ways, easily taking down the Clips at home after delivering the knock-out punch during a 34-18 scoring advantage in the third quarter. Jrue Holiday, by far the most impressive Philly player during this stretch (the team’s won seven of nine now), led them with 24, while Spencer Hawes had another great night (I know!) with 16 points and 14 boards. Blake Griffin (20 points, 18 rebounds) was a force, but, you know. Free Blake.

Boston 118, New York 116

Wow. Just, wow. After the Knicks led (mostly by single digits) for almost the entire game, the two teams traded buckets and shit talk in the final few minutes of the fourth quarter. A huge Ray Allen three-pointer gave the Celts their first lead since they were up 7-5, but a goofy Danilo Gallinari and-1 tied it up. Of course, as he loves to do, Paul Pierce put on his assassin mask and went to work, drilling an elbow J over Amar’e Stoudemire (more on him in a sec) to put the C’s up two with only 0.4 seconds remaining. STAT found himself open at the top of the key during the in-bounds play, and proceeded to hit a pretty three-pointer FOR THE WIN! But no. The ball clearly left his hand after the red light went off, and it was negated.

Still though, this one will go a long way in legitimizing the Knicks’ recent success, as a last-second loss to Boston is nothing to complain about. Stoudemire was brilliant, hitting 39 points by dominating the post and drilling a barrage of mid-range J’s at will. With everything going on, it was hard to notice that Pierce was having a pretty incredible game as well, as he went for 32 points and 10 boards. Multiple Celtics also put up strong efforts: Rajon Rondo (who was hobbled by an ankle injury late) dished 14 assists; Allen scored 26; and Kevin Garnett had a 20 and 13 line to go along with a whole bunch of intensity. Next up during the Knicks’ dream (err, nightmare?) week is a matchup with the Heat Friday night at MSG. If you like watching basketball, you should probably check that out.

Chicago 110, Toronto 93

The good: The Bulls won, easily, and by a lot, and they’re playing great ball. They’ve won seven in a row, and Carlos Boozer (34 points, 12 rebounds) is beasting away. Derrick Rose (only 6 points and 11 dimes, but in only 29 minutes) is getting increasingly comfortable, and Luol Deng (19 points) is hitting a nice rhythm.

The bad: It was reported last night that Joakim Noah (11 points, 11 rebounds) will be having surgery on his right thumb, and could miss up to 10 weeks. This means the Bulls just got a lot weaker defensively, lost a huge source of energy, and won’t be able to fully develop their on-court chemistry until a number of weeks from now. Unfortunate news, all around.

Miami 101, Cleveland 95

LeBron against his former homies, part two. This time, there was no joking or joking-masked-as-trash-talk going on, as both teams meant business. The Cavs meant a little more business than last time, but the Heat still have all those good players, so they were able to get by. It was only a one-point game going into the final quarter, but a few big hoops and some important stops down the stretch was the difference. Dwyane Wade led his crew with 28 points, while Bron scored 21 and collected 13 rebounds. LBJ’s old bud Boobie Gibson scored an impressive 26 in the loss.

L.A. Lakers 109, Indiana 94

Pau Gasol scored 14 points in the first six and a half minutes. The Lakers outscored the Pacers 36-22 in the first quarter. They went on to outscore them 59-37 in the first half. In other words, this one was over nice and quick. Kobe went for 31 off 11-18 shooting, while Lamar Odom scored 13 and grabbed 17. L.A.’s road trip continues tomorrow night in Philly.

Oklahoma City 117, Houston 105

The Thunder shot 57.7 percent from the field. When a high-octane team like Oklahoma City shoots 57.7 percent, they’re probably going to get a W. And so it was. Houston’s been playing well, but couldn’t keep up with Kevin Durant (32 points) and Jeff Green (21 points) last night. The Thunder have won four straight, and chances are they’ll keep that flowing tomorrow night against Sacramento.

Memphis 113, Charlotte 80

The Bobcats are generally known for hard-nosed defense, and when they lose their defensive focus, they lose games. Like this one. The Grizz walked all over the ‘Cats in the second quarter, outscoring them 35-16 en route to an easy victory. OJ MayoZach Randolph and Rudy Gay combined for 66 points, and some solid bench assistance was the icing on the cake. Gerald Wallace’s (out with a sprained ankle) absence was felt, to say the least.

New Orleans 94, Sacramento 91

Down 23 points in the third, Chris Paul and the Hornets decided they were tired of the losing thing, and spent the rest of the game storming forward. They finally did caught up in the fourth, jumping ahead with a few minutes to go and not looking back. CP3 had 22 points and 11 dimes, while Marcus Thornton stepped up and scored 19 in the W. As we’ve seen numerous times this season (Knicks, Heat), sometimes a couple of games against sub-par teams is all it takes to turn around some negative momentum, so maybe this’ll be the start of something bigger for the Bees. Stay tuned.

San Antonio 92, Milwaukee 90

Manu Ginobili, ladies and gentleman. Talk about a comeback season. Not only did his stat line read 26, 6 and 4 (on 9-13 shooting), dude drilled a very contested jumper at the buzzer to give the Spurs their sixth straight win. San Antonio continues to sit atop the NBA, now with a 21-3 record, its best in franchise history. Video of Manu’s heroics below.

Phoenix 128, Minnesota 122

Fifteen threes. 128 points. Phoenix Suns basketball, folks. Of course, they gave up 122, but that’s usually how it goes. Jason Richardson scored 29, as his team ended its three-game losing streak and sent the TWolves packing. Also, Steve Nash: 11 points, 19 assists. Kevin Love (23 points, 16 boards) put up another incredible line, but Minny had no answer for Phoenix’s barrage of offensive firepower.

Dallas 103, Portland 98

After having their win streak put to an abrupt end against a scrappy Milwaukee group, the Mavs rebounded against the Blazers last night. Dallas shot 53.4 percent, and though the Blazers played well, some clutch play down the stretch—including a vital Dirk Nowitzki jumper—was the difference. Even though he played, Brandon Roy is looking decreasingly healthy, and he sat out some important minutes while guys like Wesley Matthews and Nicolas Batum saw time.

Actual STATS: (I know, so clever.) Amar’e Stoudemire: 39 points, 10 boards, 3 blocks, 1 steal.

Moment of the Night: There were two. First, Manu takes no prisoners:

And, of course: The Truth shines under MSG’s bright lights, followed by STAT’s negated game-winner:

Anthony, see how Manu took that step back first?
That’s perfectly legally. See how he realized that step back was not going to create enough space, and then jumped back again another three feet? That’s completely illegal. Completely and totally illegal. You can’t take a step, then do a jumpstop. The jumpstop counts as both of your alloted steps. This is the same thing that happened with the crab dribble, only much, MUCH worse.
I’m not hating, I just like for things to be stated as they are. Calls will be missed in any game, and that call was clearly missed.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Yes you do, JT21. But I don’t hold that against you, lol. It’s only natural because I can’t front, it’s pretty cool. I’d be lying if I said that it wasn’t. Who wouldn’t want to be close to the game like that and have an opportunity to talk with people that most will only get to see on TV or chop it up with folks behind the scenes that the average person doesn’t even know exists? Trust me, if you really love basketball, it’s the coolest thing ever. I don’t take it for granted one bit. And at least you’re honest about it… I respect that. And we’ll be fine without Noah. Yeah it sucks, but we’ve been here before.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Max
You can gather off one foot and then do a jump stop. You can’t excute a stepback, which involves moving both feet, and then do a jump stop. You really, really can’t. That’s three steps, because the jump stop counts as two.

  • Max

Allenp, just stop, you are making a fool out of yourself.

  • http://www.peopleofwalmart.com/ Jukai

@Bryan: I actually think the Bulls are gonna hurt without Noah. They have a deep frontcourt, but it’s mostly comprised of power forwards. Noah was one of the best defensive 5s in the L, that always smarts. I’d say a good 5 games will be lost without Noah. Admittedly, you watch way more Bulls games than I do.
@Max: Allenp argued his point with a high level of respect and intellect. You made a fool out of yourself for responding the way you did. If you either believe Allen is wrong or you saw things differently, say so. Why in the world would you respond in that way?

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

    Manu did not travel

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Jukai – I think an easier December/January schedule helps the Bulls. The streaking Knicks play Amare at center at 6’9″. Other than Orlando and Boston, I don’t think there’s any center in the east that Boozer can’t handle. Or at least that the Bulls can’t handle by committee. We’ll suffer, but not as much as we did when Noah was out last year

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp
  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

5 games lost in 8-10 weeks? I’ll take that, Jukai. Who wouldn’t? Yes, we’ll lose something on defense, but as I’ve said before, Noah is a hustle guy, not a skill guy. You can make up for what he does on the floor collectively. It’s not like DRose is down for 8-10 weeks, then we’d have no chance. And keep in mind, Taj Gibson is no slouch offensively or defensively and Omer Asik is a very solid rebounder, and he’s 7-feet tall. Trust me, Chicago will be fine.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

I think he’s saying 5 additional games on top of what the Bulls normally would have lost.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Oh, and word to Enigmatic too at 2:33. I haven’t been around for as long as a lot of people here have, but as it was explained to me when I first started, Ryan and Russ used to GO IN on people on the regular. It’s funny how all of a sudden the comment section was as peaceful as Pandora and then I showed up and turned it into a war zone. Revisionist history…

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Diesel, we lost 10 in a row last season in the middle of a run for the 8th seed with Joakim out. I’d all but given up any hope to make the postseason, but we did. We’re a stronger and deeper team now though. No worries…

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Oh I agree. We did just fine without Boozer. I think we’ll do just fine without Noah. Especially since I read something like out of the 35 games Noah will miss, 9 will be vs teams above .500.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

it was crazy confrontational when I started commenting on here like 2 years ago. And I mean brutal

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I think y’all are undervaluing how much Noah does for our team. I’m not just talking about stats. He’s their vocal leader, their defensive leader, their best hustler. Taj is nowhere near as consistent, Asik nowhere near as talented, and Thomas nowhere near as young.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

I think Noah being gone will hurt Chicago’s overall record, but I doubt it affects playoff seeding. Chicago will be 4th, Atlanta or Milwaukee will be 5.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Max
I’m fine with the points I made. If folks disagree, they disagree. Dude did a stepback, then broke off the step back to hop backwards. If folks think that’s legal, fine. But I remember the outcry over the crab dribble.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

    Max at 235 FTW

  • Max

@ Jukai did you not read what i posted just a few moments before Allen responded? I told him to stop, because he was trying to argue with something that clearly wasn’t there. So my last post was right on the money, just like Manu’s game winner.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

the crab dribble was before they revised the traveling rule wasn’t it

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Didn’t Henry Abbott run a piece recently criticizing Dwyane Wade for jumping off one foot and then landing on that same foot because he believed that was a direct violation of the rules?…
Also, as for the comment section. I’ve been here a really long time. If you do a search for my name, you’ll see it on here for years. The comment section has been harsh at times and it’s been calm.
I don’t complain too much about people’s ridiculous comments because overall, I’ve found that if you refrain from name calling and inflammatory statements, 99 percent of people will respond to you in kind. When I first started commenting on here I butted heads with folks a lot more about race and basketball, and even then, we rarely started calling each other names even when we might not have been totally polite.
If everybody wants things to be a certain way, then behave that way EVEN WHEN PROVOKED. This is just the internet. If someone calls you a name, or questions your manhood, it doesn’t actually affect you in real life. You don’t even know these people.

  • JTaylor21

I think that y’all are really underestimating what Noah brings to the bulls. Dude is their best defensive player by far, he’s their best defensive frontcourt, he erases a lot of the bulls mistakes on defense, and he’s their heart and soul and the one player you can count on to bring it every night. Now CBooz is the guy that’s going to have to anchor the back-line defense, is that okay with bulls fans? Also just because they have an easy schedule coming up, doesn’t mean that they will win the majority of them.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Sorry it wasn’t Abbott himself, but the cat at Hardwood Paroxysm. Here is what he said :
For those who have been following this series, the travel here should be obvious…yet it isn’t called. The NBA’s video rulebook is quite clear on this move: “an offensive player with the ball may not hop consecutively on the same foot upon ending his dribble.”

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Never, ever doubt me suckers. Lol.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

The bottom feeders in the leastern conf are :toronto, nets, pistons, cavs, wizards, bobcats. Indy is barely above that group. Then theres mil, atl, and chi. Then orl mia bos. West worst are : clips, lwolves, kings. Ws, suns, rockets, blazers, buggs, grizz right above that. Then denver, jazz, okc, lal, mavs and spurs at the top. …… Even the worst teams in the west are capable and present problems. Gordon and blake, love and beas, evans and cuz. The disparity isnt as large as it used to be, but it still exists.

  • JTaylor21

AllenP, I’m not really worried about the name-calling itself because like you said none of us will ever met each other in real life but what happened to strictly talking basketball and leaving the BS aside. Isn’t that what this site was made for?

  • Max

It was a backwards jump stop.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

Allen did Manu plant his right foot before that stepback? I can’t tell, but now that you brougth it up it really may have been a travel.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

I dont recall ever seeing dwade pick up his dribble, then hop on the same foot twice. Although, that would be pretty funny to see.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Ryan basically called out all the commentors one time for having no lives.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Last year Derrick and Joakim were all we had. Losing one crippled the team severely. C’mon people. Not to downplay the importance of Joakim, but DRose and Booze are more than capable of doing the heavy lifting on O and this is not a VDN coached team. And I’m sorry that we’re not the Heat who apparently are the only team who can capitalize on an easy schedule missing key roster pieces. I see you, JT.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Tarzan do an internet search for Wade’s name and traveling and the clip will pop up. The difference between what Wade did and what Manu did was that Manu jumped backwards.
Look at the move and watch his left foot again.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

haha that’s what I meant Left Foot, it did plant before the actual stepback/hopstep landed?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    NBK
Unless he has the ability to levitate it did.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Oh, and I don’t know if y’all noticed, but I posted another link to a story breaking down the difference in shots for Amare and Bosh and basically recapping the discussion we had yesterday about who would be better on the Heat.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

hard plant with the right foot, hop back on the left foot, then an additional hop for more space.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

For sure, I am on a pretty sh*tty computer at work, youtube videos do not come through very clean.

  • JTaylor21

Touché BC touché, I understand where you’re coming from, CBooz and DRose are more than enough to get some wins but their defense is going to suffer alot with Noah out. You can score all you want but to win games vs good teams you’re going to have to lock down on defense and the bulls two remaining best players play turrible D. Also are we now comparing booz/rose to wade/bron?

  • T-Money

nbk – the travel ruling was modified to reflect the way it has always been called since at least the 50s (as far back as true hoop went in their articles about the subject). the archaic ruling allowed for one step after gathering the ball whereas two steps after gathering have always been allowed in basketball at any level in any country. so technically the ruling did change but practically, not at all.

  • http://slamonline.com ShadiestBen

Nbk – Why don’t you have Nawlins making the play-offs? You think Phoenix, Memphis (or someone else) will finish with a better record? I’m assuming you have Portland finishing above them as well.
They haven’t played great lately but they are a play-off team, especially if Monty starts using Marcus Thornton in the Jamal Crawford role. Any team with Chris Paul for 82 games (even at 85%) will fight and scrap their way to an 8 seed.

  • T-Money

“Bosh has allowed just 36 points on 53 shots this season, ranking him among the league leaders with Dwight Howard and Anderson Varejao. Stoudemire? He’s allowed 79 points on 75 shots from the post.” Damn, I didn’t know that. Bosh just looks so soft sometimes – that’s why you can’t always trust the naked eye.

  • http://slamonline.com ShadiestBen

    I’ll rephrase, if CP3 plays 75-82 games this year, Nawlin’s are a play-off team.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

i’m aware of why they changed the rule, I was just asking if it happened before or after “the crab dribble” – but, the new rule does allow a player to sneak in a “third step” which is actually an extension of your last dribble. If a player uses it correctly (Manu Ginobili, Tyreke Evans) then they can change direction 2 different times between their last dribble and the end of the move. Which is a biproduct of the revision, even though it hasn’t really been written about

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

Well first of all I don’t see Chris Paul playing more then 65 games, I know you say he is getting healthier, but I just don’t feel good about it. And since their 11-1 start, what’s their record? And yes I have Memphis and Phoenix finishing with better records then New Orleans. I don’t like portland at all, especially considering I have them moving Marcus Camby if they can get picks

  • http://slamonline.com ShadiestBen

If CP3 plays less than 65, their not in the play-offs. Like I said if he plays 75 plus they are in for sure. Come on the NBA season is all swings, they could make a run after their comeback victory last night. Friday night at home to Utah is gonna be a great game!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That comment from bryan on manu was actually me.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

If cp’s history tells you anything it’s that Friday against deron williams will not turn out in chris pauls favor

  • http://slamonline.com ShadiestBen

Looking at career stats, CP3 is better hands down. Looking head to head isn’t a clear barometer as Deron has always had a superior roster.

  • blackice87

    No travel.

  • tRay
