How the King stole Christmas.

by Anton Kudriavtsev/@TheDiesel

Bulls 95, Knicks 103

Kicking off the first of five prime-time games, the Knicks threw on some throwback jerseys and played some throwback defense in the fourth quarter to get a win over the Bulls in Madison Square Garden. Shooting until your clip is empty was a good idea if you play for New York, as the team shot 53% from the field including an astounding 55% from three-point land. Amar’e had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and an impressive 6 blocks while Raymond Felton added 20 points, 12 assists, and 5 steals. The Knicks turned up the defense in the 4th quarter, smothering Chicago and only allowing two baskets in the first 10 minutes of play as Rose (25 points, 8 assists) struggled to convert some lay-ups and get to the line. Carlos Boozer played well (26 points and 19 rebounds), but when Booz and his Santa-bushy eyebrows are getting to the line more than your franchise player, you have a problem. Regardless of whether Rose should get more foul calls at the rim, some consistency couldn’t hurt at the line. Santa recommends working on executing plays out of double teams and getting to the line to have a happier holiday season.

Celtics 78, Magic 86

After opening their early Christmas present in the form of the league’s biggest trade this year, the Magic continued their winning ways as they snapped the Celtics’ 14-game winning streak. The lack of personnel for the Celtics (without Rondo this game) finally caught up with them as they couldn’t get stops down the stretch and didn’t execute on the offensive end. A close game down the stretch, oversized pet hamster Jameer Nelson hit a three before J.J. Redick mocked Paul Pierce by doing a version of his step-back jumper to seal the game for the Magic. Dwight was in foul trouble for most of this game, and flopped to make Shaq foul out but Brandon Bass also had 21 points while the Big Turk added 16 points and 4 assists as he starts to settle back into the pizza scene in Orlando. For Boston, Garnett led with 22 points but Nate Robinson’s thirst for contested three-pointers hurt the team in the end. I was surprised to see Nate playing at all, he must have been exhausted from staying up all night and building toys along with the other elves.

Dwyane Wade

Heat 96, Lakers 80

Unless it’s pre-season or early April, this was a statement game and the Heat used the opportunity to make their statement in a blowout win over the Lakers. I was watching the game at a sports bar, when “real” NBA fans asked me who was on the Heat besides the Big 3, I was cut off as I started to list the players with a simple statement: “Yeah, but those three are all you need, right?”. It was hard to argue this (at least to causal fans), as Miami’s Big 3 have been scoring over 60% of the team’s total points and their outstanding play continued today with LeBron smearing his talents into his third triple double of the season with 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists while Wade added 18 and dished six. Despite looking like a weak deer in Sarah Palin’s rifle scope, Chris Bosh quickly quieted critics with a strong game on the biggest stage this season, posting up 24 points and 13 rebounds as he exposed Gasol’s softness, got on the glass and even had the dunk of the game. Kobe had 17 points but on 16 shots, his Lakers looking flat and simply out-executed in half-court sets. LeBron and Kobe had a dicey war of words late in the game, if you read their lips you can clearly see each arguing over whose signature shoe is uglier. This win what Pat Riley was thinking about when he applied the BP oil spill residue into his hair before his meeting with LeBron: a team with premier perimeter defensive ability and multiple offensive options. While unconventional, the formula is finally starting to show signs of success. For my money (maybe after some better games against the Celtics), contenders need to start fearing the Heat a little bit more.

Nuggets 106, Thunder 114

Durant showed why he’s the league’s leading scorer by dropping a season-high 44 points and leading his Thunder over the Nuggets. KD was a ridiculous 14-of-20 from the field, including 21 points in the third quarter alone and 4-of-7 from 3-point range. The Durantula had 40 points after three quarters but didn’t gun to beat his career-high 47 points, passing out of the double teams Denver threw at him to maintain the flow of the game for his team. The Thunder pushed their lead into double digits with just under 9 minutes to play and the Melo-less Nuggets didn’t get closer the rest of the game. Chauncey Billups led the Nuggets with 30 points and Nene added 21 while James Harden caught some of Durant’s sparks to score 21 points off the bench for Oklahoma City. It’s a shame Carmelo didn’t play, as this would likely have been a 50-point shootout for both stars.

Blazers 102, Warriors 109

The final Christmas day game saw Monta Ellis scoring 39 points and dishing 7 assists for the Warriors in a win over the Blazers. Portland collapsed in the 4th quarter, coughing up a six-point lead as the Warriors scored 11 straight points and earned the win. David Lee added 21 points while Dorell Wright (16 points) including a momentum-shifting dunk for Golden State in their late rally. Wes Matthews led the Blazers with 25 points while Nicolas Batum added 18 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Ellis is my undisputed favourite scorer, his shots ridiculous-looking but smooth, going down easy like a chaser.

Overtime

“Check My $tats” of the night: LeBron James – 27 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, 4 steals. The creator of the category re-claims his statistical throne.

Separated at birth of the day: Josh Smith and The Game.

Seeing Dwight take 6 hours to prepare himself at the line reminded me of this free throw.

I’m out like three-peats.

This should be the quietest comment section ever! Merry Christmas, LA! Merry Christmas, Kobe! Merry Christmas, morons!!!!

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

“You’ve got to beat these teams at home especially, and we did,” said Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni. “It’s just good to bounce back, after the three we lost in a row, that it WASN’T A FLUKE thing we won a few. It’s a good feeling game, that’s for sure.” LOL…somewhere somebody is making excuses and lamenting over the Knicks winning and grinning at the Bulls expense for the 2nd time in a row. In the end, it was a GREAT CHRISTMAS for us KNICKS fans, and it was NOT a FLUKE! :)

  • namik

The most impressive thing about Miami is how well the supporting cast is playing. They’re making their open shots, setting good screens, making crisp passes and playing swarming defense. Really opens up the court for LeBron and Wade. Oh and Bosh ate the Lakers frontline up. Meanwhile, there was nothing impressive about the Lakers. At all.

  • namik

And despite the loss, the Celts looked scary good at points last night.

  • http://studmuff73.blog.com/ Zabba

Bosh traveled on that “dunk of the night.” Obvious as hell. And yet that play is #1 on ESPN’s top 10 plays of the day. Am I the only one who cares that Bosh walked on that dunk or am I just a cranky old fart with a wicked hook shot?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Cranky….yet cool.

  • http://bassbesteck.wordpress.com Bassbesteck

wtf? he takes two steps. big ones though but still only two.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Boston – Orlando was great. Boston are the best team in the L (when they have their first 8), and the top 3 in the East is looking tougher than the top 3 in the West. Miami dictated everything against LA, and it looked eerily similar to last xmas.
It was good to see Bron/Kobe get into it, get the bad blood flowing for what would be a great series if they met in the Finals. Unfortunately for Heat fans, I can’t see any team (East or West) beating the Celtics in 7.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

Respect to the Heat, they gave it to the Lakers last night. No excuses just an old fashioned beat down. Newsflash: The Heat is the real deal. Ron Artest almost had me throwing candy canes at the t.v with those two missed lay-ups and him dribbling off his foot in transition. The Lakers pick-and-roll defense is what killed them…they should have fought over the screens instead of switching and expecting help-defense to save them. There were way too many open shots yesterday. Why was Kobe trying to post up d-wade almost every possession? He should have stopped doing that after Flash stripped him the first two times. Big Z and Super Mario played great last night respect to them as well…. I’m disappointed in my Lakers but we will bounce back…

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Wade was splitting the P & R so easily yesterday.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

Kobe looked old defending and being defended by Wade. Couldn’t get separation from Wade on O and couldn’t contain him on D at all, especially on Pn’R's.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

Was I the only one who found it funny how Kobe constantly tried to D up aggresively and go hard one-on-one when matched up with LeBron, while LeBron just kept his team play going without seemingly being caught up in the individual match-up and still had a way way better floor game. Is this a sign that the torch has been passed? (Kobe feeling he needs to prove himself when it by my logic should be the other way around) thoughts people?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Really impressed by the Heat and I’ve been underrating Chris Bosh as hell. He’s a very good PF and he’s really playing great basketball for Miami. Mario Chalmers is a good backup PG for the Heat, I like what he is doing for them on offense. The defense by the Heat was great, the Lakers just couldn’t get a uncontested shot. LeBron was hot from 3 and I think he will start to get back in that top 3 MVP discussion, he’s certainly playing like one. This may sound wrong but Kobe wasn’t that bad, he wasn’t shooting too much when things werent going well, just 16 shots, he passed out of double teams. He was getting alot of criticism during that losing streak that he was shooting too much, they showed all those stats that when Kobe shoots this amount of shots the Lakers have this record and the last 7/8 games or so he hasn’t shot more than 20 times.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Lz, I noticed that too, Kobe was really bodying up on Lebron, super agressive and like you said LeBron didn’t try to force something at all.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

Exactly Jahmai. Imo Kobe really seemed to be missing a step when matched up with the younger two of the top 3 talents in the L. I mean he has looked pretty good or great in most of the games this season and all the talk about him being on the decline really seemed exagerated up until this game. But last night – arguably the biggest game of the season yet – he looked really ordinary on O (except that he did a real good job moving the ball and passing out of double-teams) and below average on D. Compared to James and Wade I guess he just simply looked old.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Jahmai – Your right, Kobe didn’t play bad yesterday. He was outplayed by Wade (his main match-up for the game), and Bron had a lot better game than him too. However, Kobe played solid, 17,7,5. After watching the game 16 shots was not a bad number of attempts for him.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Lz – He was outplayed, but it was one regular season game. Lets not make too much of this. I don’t think any kind of ‘passing of the torch moment’ will happen until Bron beats Kobes team in the play-offs, or Brons team wins a title.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

SLAM, Anton, Ryne whoever is in charge of the site; you should put this ‘Post Up’ on the initial SLAM ‘Home’ site if you want to get people talking and your ad-money ticking. Right now it is still that ‘Art-Miami’ that is the first in line on the site.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

I think Kobe’s great but it kinda feels like LeBron has his number and I don’t know if LA can beat the Heat IF they meet up in the Finals, Wade is just tough for Kobe, LeBron is too much and like the post up said Bosh is making Gasol look soft.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

+ Bynum will probably get injured.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

AllBall; I kind of agree with you. But watching the game it was just a whole other feeling one got. One was trying (and failing) to upstage the other every chance he got, the other was just playing his game and clearly outplaying his nemisis while just seemingly going about his business. One seemed kind of insecure (maybe that is a stretch) about the presence/play of the other, while the other just seemed focused on playing and controling the game.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

lz hit the nail… kobe did look like he was really trying hard. wade was having none of that, torching kobe whenever and taking his cookies….. miami is for real. this is a great season.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

What is he meant to look like?? Like he doesn’t care?? Thats how the rest of the Lakers (Ron & Lamar not included) were playing. As great as the Heat have been lately, and as good as Bron has been (I have him firmly in the MVP race after the last few weeks) it seems like a lot of people are taking any opportunity to hate on Kobe. Its one regular season game guys.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

AllBall; you can keep saying that it is one regular season game, that is very true. It is also very true that barring a LAL-HEAT finals this is one of the two games Heat and LAL will play during this season. If you really think these guys don’t want to go out and dominate this game, you are seriously underrating their competitive drive. Heck every thing about Kobe’s demeanor last night showed he wanted to win the game and match-up. Just one regular season game, yeah but so much more and everybody, especially the players know it.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Yes its an important game, the most hyped game of the regular season. How ever, its still just that, a regular season game. I’m not questioning how much Kobe wanted the game, thats the reason it was evident how hard he was playing. What I am saying is the ‘passing of the torch’ or the declaration that the Heat are now favourites for the title or any other hyperbolic statements are just thatm hyperbole. I’m sure a lot of those kinds of statements were made last xmas too. Why don’t we wait and see if MIA/LAL make it out of their conference first. These regular season lapses and passiveness are nothing new for the Lakers. Neither is Brons team having major regular season success.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

    Very true.

  • http://www.danchamb.com.br Lz – Cphfinest3

    True.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

The Knicks have beaten two good teams in a row.

  • http://Www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Ok Orange, as usual way to diss me on the low without calling out my name like you’re scared or something.
Anyways, no excuses. Can’t call it a fluke if the Knicks beat the Bulls twice and shoot a crazy % from 3 in both games. I’ll call it sh*tty 3-point defense on our part and great defense on theirs.
You’re still stupid for thinking Raymond Felton is better than Derrick Rose, though, no matter how many times they beat us.
Also keep in mind Knicks haven’t played the Bulls with both a healthy Noah and Boozer. Trust, that makes a huge difference.
Until then though, I’ll grudgingly tip my hat off to your names. Though I hate them all… Except my dude Wilson Chandler (DePaul!!!!)

  • http://Www.bulls.com Enigmatic

*Tip my hat off to your KNICKS, f*ckin iPhone autocorrect..

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Noah wouldn’t help defend the three point line, or score on us.We already got crushed on the boards and didn’t do much scoring in the paint which is where Noah would have made a difference. Derrick Rose is the MF truth though. No way Felton is better than he is.

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

Allenp said a while ago that he thinks the Heat match up very well with the Lakers. I actually agree now. Gasol is too finesse and can’t wear down Bosh, Wade is too annoying for Kobe and because of Artests’ struggles, he can’t stay on the floor to stop Lebron. Unless Bynum totally re energizes, Miami’s three-headed center spot can deal with him.
It’s a pity, because I don’t think the Lakers at this point can beat the Spurs, and I don’t think the Heat at this point can beat the Celtics.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Anybody else catch that MASSIVE Pierce travel at the top of the key where he took three steps then jump stopped? I just found it funny that the refs didn’t call that but they did call a 10 second FT violation on Dwight…

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

Bryan: Not saying the result wouldn’t have been the same, but a lot of those threes were a result of kickouts from collapsing defense. If Noah was there, he could anchor things and those threes would be less plentiful.
Once again, I’m not saying that the Knicks would not have won if Noah was there, I’m simply saying the massively high percentage of threes was mostly a product of people having to collapse on cutters

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

The Lakers are their own worst enemy just as the Heat were when they struggled early. They play with no urgency at all. Classic case of championship complacency. They look awful and you’re right the Spurs would scrub them up right now. Unless they get some injection of heart , they’re an easy out come playoff time. I personally think by the time May rolls around though, they will be a totally different team. Phil is letting them take their lumps the way he always does and eventually they will come back around to his way of doing things.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Eh, I can see what you’re saying. Although I think most of their high percentage threes came in transition which again Noah would have had no effect on.

  • JTaylor21

I like how people are trying to find excuses for Kobe’s play last night. Do you think that MJ would have layed an egg on such a huge stage and nationally telivised game with everyone watching? That’s the difference between MJ and Kobe, MJ always played big in the big games whether it’s a regular season or playoff game. Also kobe never had the torch, because it belonged to TD in the first place.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Yeah MJ NEVER played badly. EVER.

  • http://juanm.garcia@comcast.net Miami King

As nice a win as we had I can’t get to excited as the Celtics still own us.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

In the 1996 closer against Seattle (game 6), Jordan won on Father’s Day, and capped off a comeback like no other finishing off a 72-10 season. But in that last game he didn’t put up impressive individual stats…well he did, but just not compared to himself. He was rather Kobeish in this one. Jordan had a career Finals low 22 points on 5 of 19 shooting. He did make 11 of 12 from the line and added seven boards but he did have five turnovers.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Hmm sounds similar to 6/24 game that Kobe and the Lakers won. Where Kobe grabbed 15 rebounds. The same game he gets killed for. The same game that all you people say Jordan would never have. Do some research before you talk sh*t.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

17,7,5 on 6-16 isn’t laying an egg. We are all saying rightly that D Wade outplayed him, but he only finished with 18,6,5 on 6-17. Not that much of a difference there. Also, if you really think TD had any ‘torch’ then your showing your hatred towards Kobe. Kobe has 5 rings the decade just gone, TD has 3. Bring up the inevitable ‘he wasn’t always first option’ argument, they have two finals MVPs each, and TD hasn’t been the first option in San An for a couple of years now, whilst they have the best record this year he is clearly not the first option.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

    Co-sign Bryan, 100%.

  • T-Money

Let’s get this straight: Miami can beat anybody. Absolutely anybody, including Boston. Not saying that they will, but it’s ludicrous to affirm with any kind of uncertainty that there’s a team out there that they can’t beat 4 times in 7 games. / Jukai: Do you honestly think it matters whether Ron stays on the floor or not? Bron kills Artest, he’s not quick enough to have a chance to body him anymore.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Looking at Basketball Reference, I found this from Jordan. During the 98 finals he shot 9-26 in a loss in game 5, the next game in a win he shot 15-35. In either of those games he didn’t have more than 4 rebounds or 4 assists. That was in 1 finals series I looked at.

  • JTaylor21

What does MJ’s bad playoff games have to do with anything? This is MJ about not going out and laying an egg vs a player that people think he’s equal or better than him. The same equates into Kobe and LeBron; people think that bron is just as good and some think he’s better than Kobe, so kobe should go out there to prove them otherwise. Two games now on the biggest regular season stage vs Bron, and he’s gotten dominated.

  • JTaylor21

When people thought that Clyde was just as good as MJ, what did MJ do? He went out there to show them that they were all wrong and outright dominated Portland. Even though MJ played a team game later in his career, there were nights when he showed people he can still dominate a game like few others can.

  • T-Money

And this is happening without Haslem and (for all purposes) Mike MIller. Miami’s end of quarter lineup will all the subs will be Chalmers-Miller-James-Haslem-Dampier — that’s a playoff team! / Knicks looked good yesterday but it still feels gimmicky to me to have Chandler at the 4, and I love Chandler as a 2-3. / I was pleasantly surprised with SVG only playing 8 guys, Q-Rich has done nothing to deserve playing time so far.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

When was the other? Last xmas Kobe had 33, 10 and 8. You said Michael never laid an egg on the big stage, which is false.
Look at these stats without any bias, 17,7,5 on 6-16. 18,6,5, on 6-17. Not that much difference. Basically no difference. Kobe has 5 championships. Why is he hated so much?

  • T-Money

Kobe didn’t have a terrible game yesterday but not a good game either, just like Wade. But his offensive production is more vital to the Lakers that Wade’s is to the Heat so it stands out more.
