Report: Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace on Trade Block

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Despite Michael Jordan’s preseason optimism, things aren’t exactly looking up in Charlotte for the Bobcats. The team is seven games below .500, and Larry Brown is even more miserable than usual.

Luckily for them, it’s trade season in the NBA, and according to the local paper, the team’s top two players are being shopped.

Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace could soon be wearing different uniforms.

The Observer
reports:

The Charlotte Bobcats have been gauging the trade value of various players, including co-captains Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace, two NBA sources confirmed Thursday. “I had to get on them at halftime – beg them to play. That’s not what I’m supposed to be doing,’’ Brown said. “No effort, no teamwork, guys don’t run back. They blame it on the referees.’’

With that as a backdrop, Bobcats management is apparently assessing its trade options. The two sources – executives with other NBA teams – spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject. “It would not surprise me at all’’ if the Bobcats move one of their top players, one source said. “I will say I think they’re asking for a lot.’’ … “I’d think they’re proposing different scenarios to different teams; maybe 15 or 20,’’ said one of the sources, adding that Chicago and Detroit might be two teams receptive to making a deal.

Jackson and Wallace are owed close to $60 million combined on their current deals, and their respective numbers have taken a noticeable dip this season.

The two big names aren’t the only ones Michael Jordan is looking to unload; the report claims that basically anyone on the roster (with the exception of Tyrus Thomas) could potentially be moved.

    Who would want Jackson?

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Orlando, offer Vince, Rashard, Gortat, and a 1st Rounder for Jackson, Wallace, Mohammed, and a 2nd Rounder.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Or Sacramento, offer Beno, Landry, Dalembert, and Donte for Jackson, Wallace, and Mohammed.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

So this means that they are ready to gut their team. What they need to do is get a point guard in return if they make a trade. Augustin is better this year but is just not cutting it as the starter. I think there should be a lot of interest in Jackson as he is a hard nose veteran with plenty of playoff experience.

  • Tyquez

Caboose hell no rashard lewis is better than all them niggas /i would trade jackson and wallace for brandon bass and mickael pietrus and draft pick

  • Joe

    Go Orlando, go!

This is actually kind of interesting, because hoopshype.com was reporting that Charlotte was interested in Rip Hamilton (they referenced espn, but I couldn’t find it on their site). It’s interesting because during Detroit’s Allen Iverson acquisition, a lot of folks that comment on here (the smarter ones) thought that Detroit’s offense would have flowed better if Detroit had also unloaded Rip Hamilton to Golden State for Jax. I disagreed at the time, but in hindsight I was probably wrong. That said, the last thing Detroit needs right now is another 2 or 3. I would like to see Rip in Charlotte, though.

I still say Rip Hamilton for Gilbert Arenas, straight up!

  • http://nicekicks.com Meloman2.0

@kobe… Wtf, who WOULDN’t want Jackson

  • ClydeSays

Is it just me, or do MJ & LB never seem to know what they want? Brown just recently regretted letting Felton go now that he’s playing well in NY.

Would be funny if MJ traded for Rip, a player he feuded with on the Wiz and then shipped off to the Pistons where Rip picked up some jewelry.

Being a great player or a great coach doesn’t always translate into knowing how to run a franchise…

  • Crustified-Jalepino

He must have felt for Thomas after the SLAMADADAY incident.

    @meloman: indy

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

    and detroit

  • http://bugmarley.com LeoneL

    tyrus thomas, franchise player…

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

The only exception is Tyrus? Really? They barely play the dude…

  • MikeC.

Stephen Jackson looks like he’s getting old really fast. It looks like he can’t bend his knees or bend at the waist sometimes.

  • MikeC.

Glenn Robinson had that “can’t bend at the waist” shuffle for a couple years before the wheels really came off his career.

  • obo

cmon guys, jackson can still play. all he needs is a challenge and some guys he can run with. its kind of the same thing with baron davis in la.
charlotte messed up over the summer, when they didn´t improve the roster after the teams 1st playoff run. they even got worse by losing felton. thats not the way to motivate a team

  • TOTO

Allen iverson + Larry +Bobcats = NBA finals

  • flimo

    me suck

  • add

i dont believe that gerald wallace isnt hustlin, he’s the definition of it

  • tRay

    @TOTO nice equation

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

MJ’s putting way too much faith in Ty. So glad the Bulls got rid of him. Dude’s been an underachiever for a minute now.

  • http://bulls.com airs

whoa whoa. with the EXCEPTION of tyrus thomas? bizzaro land.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Anon e Mouse

Thank you Meloman. OK Jackson seems like an old 32 but he has has been so underated throughout his carreer its a damn shame. The man has a ring, good playoff experience and can shoot a damn 3. Seems like he’s got an undeserved rep cos people will never let him live down the Indy fight, SMH. The one thing that struck me about this story is those are the 2 last people I would ever think wouldn’t hustle. I call shenanigans on this one. Come on Slam fam let’s here some insider opinions on this one.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

@MikeC Jackson has always looked like that. He doesn’t really run, he kind of quickly shuffles his feet across the court. Its just more noticable when he’s playing like crap and the team is losing.

  • http://zenguuuu max

@Tyquez, Rashard Lewis is not better than captain Jack or Gerrald Wallace ;)

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

@Clidesays: MJ didn’t “feud” with Richard Hamilton. Rip loved playing with Jordan. He traded him for Jerry Stackhouse, a player that averaged over 29 points per game two years before.

  • doyouwantmore

Gerald Wallace would be great in Sacramento.

  • basketblogger

not sure if basketball can survive in charlotte…

  • Anonymous

Guess signing with Team Jordan is more of a guarantee you’ll be traded soon than a guarantee of loyalty. Or maybe this is a diabolical plot from the league to get CP3 (another Jordan guy) some help and keep a team in New Orleans? Ariza and West for Jax and Crash? Throw in some filler to make the math even? Let the Cats move to Vegas after the season, MJs not so secret wet dream….

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

I really hate saying Crash needs to go but he does. Jackson is far more productive this year, but teams will be willing to give back less because of his tech issue and his history of off the court problems. He has found a home in Charlotte. Wallace has too, but he will bring back more in return. Ever since he made the all-star break, I dont see as much intensity in Gerald’s game. He still plays harder than most players do but he has taken a step back from what he once was. That being said, his stock is still up and I know he will get us something that will put the team back on the right course. It is going to be harder seeing him in another uniform if it happens but after the Grizzlies destroyed us it isnt something I would be opposed to.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Anonymous I can see why you want to stay anonymous. Very ‘interesting’ view of things.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

Might as well. Better to start over than be stuck just outside the playoffs the next several years.

  • JD

    Melo anyone?

  • Shem

Id want my Raptors to jump on this as our starting sf is the weakest position but Gerald seems to be on the back end of his career and the athleticism he really relies won’t be as explosive in a year or two. His concussion history is another reason why I wouldn’t want this to happen. Wallace still has game and would make great for a team trying to contend for a title (like the Bulls) but as a team rebuilding like the raps (or as mentionned sacramento) I don’t think this would be a good deal.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Looks like jordan is planning a youthy rebuild. Good luck! …. Sorry betcats(the commenter, not the team.(that doesnt apply anymore as johnson is gone.))

  • iLL wiLL

The entire franchise should be on the trade block.

  • Jose

Jersey or NY could go for em if Melo plan fails…The Wiz would also be nice, they get arenas and then see what tey get for Augustin

  • D12FSU

i dont want gerald wallace, but i’d love jackson: VC, Gortat 1st rounder for Jackson and Muhammed

  • http://slamonline.com rudy

i would love for the kings to get gerald wallace back. should have never let him go in the first place.

  • max

arenas, mcgee and young for wallace and jackson and mohammed

  • tRay

Looks like Jordan is ready to really shake things up again huh? lol

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

D12FSU, you and I think alike again.

  • Ptown

I smell a hometown deal brewing with MJ sending Jackson to the bulls for minor value in return. Rose, jackson, deng, boozer and when noah gets back, man that’s a squad….

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

It always strikes me as, whats the word??……. RETARDED! when a team loses quality important pieces, replaces them with no one, then wonders whats wrong. Bobcats as a franchise are in a bad spot. Mj has to decide whether to try to add vets(dre miller!) to current group and make a run for mediocrity, or blow it up and try to hit draft lotto. ………. Im sure ramon sessions would love to be a full time starter.
