Post Up: Magic Hour

Plus, Silas wins debut and our readers/commenters take centerstage.

by Ben Osborne / @bosborne17

The litany of obstacles facing those who could be bringing you Post Up this week includes but is not limited to: a closed office, an insane blizzard that rocked the east coast, freelance assignments and cancelled flights. Showing that I can, on occasion, “generate” content as opposed to “curating” it, Mr. Continuing Ed is following up a BlogTalk Radio appearance this evening by actually writing a Post Up.

Usual weekday Poster Upper Adam Figman was at Magic-Nets (and killing it on Twitter, as usual. He’d be underrated on there if he had 10 times as many followers. Fix that.) while some potential replacements were befelled (word?) by the above circumstances. So here I am. Between shoveling, getting my daughter to bed and doing the aforementioned radio show, I didn’t actually watch that much basketball last night. But I saw highlights, and I know how to read a boxscore. Besides, like I said in the dek to this story, the Post Up is about you all anyway. As good as Holly was and Adam and Anton are, the Post Up is really only as good as those who read and then participate below. So without further ado, a perfunctory Post Up by the E-i-C that should mainly just serve as a place for our amazing readers to talk about last night games.

Memphis 96, Toronto 85

The Grizzlies have been a disappointment this season. The Raptors have been a disaster. Z-Bo led the way for the Grizz with 21, while Tony Allen had 6 steals. Toronto was without Andrea Bargnani and Sonny Weems, making an already punchless lineup even worse.

Minnesota 113, New Orleans 98

One of the best wins of the season for a Timberwolves team that is showing some spunk, at least at home. Mike Beasley led the way with a nifty 30-9-7 line (the 7 assists marking a career high), while rookie Wesley Johnson set a career high with 24 points. Chris Paul, who had 22 and 13 for the Bugs, called it a “bad, bad, bad loss.” He and Kobe can bemoan losses to the Wolves all they want, but I don’t think a loss in Minny is all that shameful these days.

Atlanta 95, Milwaukee 80

Where have you gone, Brandon Jennings? The continued absence due to injury of one of my favorite players and definitely my favorite Twitterer in the League may be starting to take a toll on the undermanned Bucks, who lost this rematch of last year’s exciting first-round Playoff series. The Hawks ended a five-game road losing streak behind 18 points and 12 rebounds from super-steady Al Horford and 51 percent shooting from the floor as a team, while Milwaukee was done in by a 13-point 4th quarter and just 37 percent shooting as a team.

Dallas 103, Oklahoma City 93

Nice road win for the Mavs, with one big caveat about each team. For Dallas, the issue is that Dirk Nowitzki limped off the floor early in the second quarter and did not return. He is scheduled for an MRI on his now-sore right knee tomorrow morning. In Dirk’s absence, Jason Kidd did what Jason Kidd does (10-9-10-4), while Shawn Marion notched 20 points and 9 rebounds. Re. the Thunder, while I didn’t watch tonight’s game, I did watch their game with the Knicks last week and a few other games before that, and I don’t know, something just seems funky with them. Sure, they’ll make the Playoffs and Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook alone will be good for sick highlights and some great wins this season, but they don’t seem one iota better than last year and they don’t seem to be having nearly as much fun, either. Call me super-overreactionary, but I started a Scott Brooks Watch last week, at least in my own mind.

Orlando 104, New Jersey 88

Yes, the game our man Adam was at in person. From what I’ve gathered, snow made the Magic get to the arena late and start the game slowly, while the bodies in attendance were at a minimum. None of the above kept Orlando from heating up in the second half, perhaps inspired by the crazy Gilbert shot right before the half (disallowed but awesome) that Tzvi posted. Leading the way for the Magic, as usual, was Dwight Howard, who had 19 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 blocks. A Beast, indeed.

Charlotte 105, Detroit 100

I want to extend a big congratulations to Paul Silas for winning in his debut as Bobcats coach (but not “Charlotte” coach; you guys should remember what a nice job he did with the Hornets). Coach Silas is one of the great gentlemen in the NBA, and the father to Stephen Silas, lured from the Warriors to once again coach under his father. Steve is a real friend of mine, not an industry friend (nothing wrong with the latter, just saying), and I’m happy for him. As for the actual players on the floor—though the one I want to focus on is tied to the coaching change—DJ Augustin scored a season-high 27 points on 10-15 shooting from the floor to lead the Bobcats. There was probably no player forced to listen to more of Larry Brown’s tirades than DJ, so we’ll treat this line as his parting gift to LB.

Golden State 110, Philadelphia 95

The Warriors got 20+ points from Monta Ellis, David Lee and Dorell Wright in an easy win over the visiting Sixers, who were led by Jrue Holiday’s 23 points and 11 assists.

L.A. Clippers 100, Sacramento 99

The Game of the Night, in closeness if not at all in relevance to the League at large. Tyreke Evans, who had a season- and game-high 32 points, was fouled shooting a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds left (been a lot of these fouled-on-triples lately, it seems to me) with the Kings down three. He made the first two but missed the third, and then missed the putback. End result? The Kings’ eighth straight loss and 22nd in 24 games. Yuck. The entertaining Clips, on the other hand, got 31 points from Eric Gordon and 14 rebounds from Blake Griffin while notching their fifth win in six games.

Portland 96, Utah 91

Hey, I had it Utah over Portland in my rough draft of this piece. Very surprised to see the perpetually banged-up Blazers, who lost Marcus Camby to an ankle injury, win in SLC. Leading the way for Portland was LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 26 points and 7 rebounds. Deron Williams scored 31 to lead the Jazz, who lost their own skinny shotblocker when Andrei Kirilenko left the game with a lower back strain. In an unfortunate coincidence, both Camby and AK are on my fantasy team.

Houston 100, Washington 93

Saw a fourth-quarter tweet from Wizards beat writer and SLAM friend Michael Lee about how last time the Wiz “won a road game, LeBron James was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. They’re up 10 with 10 mins left.” Part one of the tweet is still true.

Bonus College Score (y’all know we have every DI score and player on the site now, right???): Pitt 78, UConn 63.

It got a bit overshadowed in today’s sports calendar by the full NBA slate, Monday Night Football and my Arsenal squad putting it on Chelsea, but the Big East kicked off its title chase with the rugged Pitt Panthers beating up on UConn behind 21 points and 7 assists from Ashton Gibbs. My question for Pitt will be the same as it has been since Ben Howland was the coach: can they do it in the NCAA Tournament?

Post-Game: This was more long-winded than I expected. Sorry, or your welcome, depending on how you found it. Commence the conversation!

There was no Kevin Love reference in this piece. Unacceptable.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Scott Brooks is not gettin fired. No way. Can’t believe I was actually watching Clippers-Kings yesterday, can’t imagine doing that a year ago. But Griffin is just incredible, EG was great too, he was 6-7 from three, every shot he takes it looks so easy, like he can hit em from halfcourt with ease. 2 good games tonight, Lakers-Spurs, Knicks-Miami. This is a little off-topic, but I hope LeBron grows that mini-afro back, it looked so cool. The top of his head looks really flat when it’s this short.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

@Ryan: is that a rule for everyone, or just me?
@Jahmai: not this season, no. But before next season, whenever that may be? I think that’s possible.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Michael Beasley…..that is all.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Yeah, that’s pretty messed up for a guy like LeBron, that when he’s in his prime 26-27 for next season, he can’t play because of the lockout. A whole year of his prime just thrown away. Kobe doesn’t have THAT many years of the no 1/2 best player in the league left, he’ll be 34 when the next season starts, 2012-2013

  • Scott

How about Houston getting to .500. They started the season looking like they would be lucky to get 35 wins. They might finish in the top eight out west after all.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Watched the first half of NOH/MIN on DVR, then found out via twitter Wolves won. Couldn’t bring myself to watch the rest as CP3 was so in control, I didn’t want to picture his team with an L.
Dallas in OKC was a great great game. The MAVS are for real this year, JET was huge down the stretch, Marion was huge on both ends, and Tyson Chandler is just a game changer. The MAVS have four guys (Stevenson, Marion, Butler & J KIDD for short stretches) that can guard the other teams best perimeter guy. They did a good job on KD. OKC are also for real, but not as much. They just keep coming & coming, but Dallas are too much of a veteran team. James Harden is starting to put it all together, and Jeff Green is underated and as tough as nails.
Portland had a very solid win in Utah. D Will was phenomenal in the 1st half, but turned the ball over and missed some key shots in the 2nd half (before hitting those two threes to keep it tight). Without Andre Miller Portland would be at the bottom of the West, & Aldridge could possibly be an all star. His numbers would definitely be at an all star level if he was the first option consistently.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

The Bobcats looked like a completely different team last night. First time I have seen any of them smiling the entire season.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Any truth to the rumor of J-Rich getting traded to the Magic for Diaw and Diop? I guess Richardson would be a stop gap if MJ moves Wallace or Stack Jax.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    *traded to the Bobcats.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Hi ben. ……….. Whats the over under for spurs lakers tonight? 17?

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Eboy that isnt going to happen unless the team continues to play bad. Supposedly the Bobcats have the framework to several trades in place and will pull the trigger if the team continues to suck. Another rumored trade that would follow if we reaquire Richardson was Jackson to the Bulls for Taj Gibson and James Johnson plus a possible draft pick. I think MJ is going to let this group play together a little longer and if he trades for anything it will be younger players for the bench.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Dallas looks really zoned in this season, but Dirk getting an injured knee is worrisome. Given his tendency to shrug off injuries (see his early comeback from a high ankle sprain 2 seasons ago to help the Mavs in their late playoff push) he’ll probably be back in no time.
Just hope he doesn’t overdo it.
Ps: the move that led to the knee sprain, baseline spin to pump fake then bankshot from a steep angle? NICE.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

SA vs. LA is tonight? Yummy!

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

That was such a nice move that he injured himself admiring it.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

I’m still not convinced about Dallas. Every year they make another big roster move and every year they disappear in the playoffs. Until I see them holding a championship trophy I refuse to say they are favorites.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

I’m no Dallas fan, but they are a different team this year. They have great defenders at multiple positions, they have length, they have versatility, they have multiple scorers. Tyson Chandler is playing great basketball, Haywood might be the best back-up C in the L. Butler is used to the system now. Shawn Marion & Jason Terry would start for a lot of teams in the L, and the haven’t had Roddy B healthy yet. Also, JJ Barea is annoying as hell but he gets under peoples skin and draws charges all over the place.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Oh and I hear Dirk’s MRI was negative, which is a positive.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

It probably wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that the Spurs are going to beat the Lakers a*s tonight.

  • http://Www.bulls.com Enigmatic

That Stephen Jacskon for Taj Gibson/James Johnson and whoever else to make it work financially trade would be a last resort for the Bulls. They don’t want to give up Taj and their first choice is to acquire either OJ Mayo or JR Smith without having to give Taj up. I don’t want Jackson at all. I don’t care how good he is.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Probably wouldn’t be, but I think LA will win. I remember them getting a good win in San An last year, and although their playing way better basketball it’s essentially the same team.
My top 4 teams in the L right now would be DAL,MIA,BOS,LAL. Don’t know whether I would have MIA or BOS 2nd. Maybe Boston because Boston have beat them down twice. I can’t wait for the next MIA-BOS match-up, now MIA have got it together.

  • http://google c_cantrell

Griffin had another beast like game.. okc didnt show up to play

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

If my team had Bogans and Korver getting extended minutes, and I was trading essentially my back-up 4 man, I would jump at that trade. All this Chicago trade talk makes me wonder why NOH (who I follow the most) don’t make a trade for a starting caliber 2 guard, cos Marco Belinelli isn’t it.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

I disagree with that, OKC showed up for the majority of the game. It was tied at 1 point in the fourth. Dallas are simply a better team than them right now. Its not really arguable, DAL have won twice this season in OKC, and have half as many losses.

  • D12FSU

I really hope orlando doesnt trade JRich to the ‘cats because A) its too early to trade a guy you just traded for, and richardson has started playing solid ball for the magic, and B) I would HATE otis smith if he traded for Diaw, the guys a bum who wouldnt crack SVGs rotation. People are saying he could be a good back up center for orl, but first off, hes a PF who doesnt bang in the post or get that many rebounds… how would he be a good back up C? The only way you trade richardson for a back up C is if its for Haywood in Dallas…im done with my rant now

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Slam, when does the new mag come out? I’m excited.

  • keify34

Last time I visited slam, Holly Mac was the post up writer – where’s she run away to?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/blogs/farmer-jones/ Ryan Jones

I mean, to me, the phrase “Kevin Love” should be required to appear in every post on Slamonline ever.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Tzvi Twersky

Thanks for holding it down last night.

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

@Scott: I could not care less about the Rockets.
@Jahmai: New issue will debut on site and be in NYC next Thursday, probably nationally by Jan. 15 or so.
    @Tzvi: my pleasure

  • JTaylor21

BGriff does something that makes your jaw drop every game and he’s dropping 21-12 with ease while being double teammed, teams don’t even double DHow like they do BGriff and he’s putting up better numbers. Speaking of DHow, what happened to all the talk about him becoming an offensive force? The celtics shut him down without their best post defender. Dude may be able to do those sorry a** post moves vs a brook lopez but he has no chance vs the celtics in the playoffs. Also he needs to forfit the rights to that superman nickname because there will only be on superman because prime shaq would have dropped 45-15 on his head.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Why the hell isn’t my comment showing up?!

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

I always argue with anyone who says prime Shaq wouldn’t of dominated Dwight. It wouldn’t have been close, Shaq was/is the MDE for a reason. However, Shaq never cared as much about defence as Dwight does. When you add it all up Shaq still comes out comfortably on top.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

Shaq would have overwhelmed Dwight physically

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Superboy would have fouled out midway through the 3rd quarter in 99% of imaginary games played between him and Prime Shaq.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

If you had a pick, just for THIS season, would you take Amar’e or Blake?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Amare, for the veteran presence.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

    What would happen next season?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Michael Jordan is the REAL superman. Prime MJ woulda sh*tted all over a prime Shaq AND prime Howard frontcourt.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

couldn’t tell you, but that is irrelevant to the question. Basically do you want 26 and 9 from a 57% shooter, or 23 and 12 from a young sooper athlete. I just wanted to see what people say and why

    _____________________________________________

    @Eboy – Makes sense

  • greg

so are the bobcats still looking to get rid of jackson wallace and someone should tell the jazz to pick them up.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Probably take 26 & 9 on 57%. However, as good as Griffins stats are it’s how watchable he is that makes him great too.

  • http://slamonline.com adam figman

pinch hit home run! thanks, ben.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

I’d take Griffin. Amar’e's inability to control the boards and play solid man/on-ball defense erks me the wrong way. Griffin atleast tries on defense, and boards his face off

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

nbk, depends on the pieces around them. On my Bulls, if we didn’t have Boozer, I’d take Griffin. For the same reasons you listed. Better rebounder and defender, which are traits that are highly valued in Chicago.
    Plus Blake and D Rose!

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

haha, of all the places I wish Griffin ended up, I wish it was Chicago more then anywhere – and I was just having that exact same conversation on FB lol

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Maybe GarPax could somehow swing a deal – Carlos Boozer and James Johnson for Baron Davis and Blake Griffin.
I know it’ll never happen, but like I always say, it’s always fun to speculate.
Speaking of FB, man NONE of my FB friends care about the NBA, or basketball on any level. It sucks.
I need to add some of my Slam fam to FB!

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

get on the slam group on facebook man. I think I posted a comment on there, send me a request

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

What Slam group on FB? Just the regular SLAM page?

  • http://bleacherreport.com/articles/408237-bryant-vs-jordan-theres-still-no-debate-jordan-is-king nbk

No there is a slam group. Well it isn’t put on by slam, someone made it, but you can comment on the wall. My comment is down a little ways. You’ll know it’s right if Twi Tzersky (sorry for the mispell) is all over the page talking about the actual Slammagazine page

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

ima just post somethin about how overrated David West is in there

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Why try to organize a slam bookface to discuss basketball when you have slam already? And youre already here, discussing basketball. ………….. Am I missing something?

    ^Facebook is…

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I was just mentioning how it sucks that none of my friends on FB care to talk about basketball.
Oh and nbk – I added you. Thought about it. Then deleted you. LOL I guess I have this thing where I actually have to know someone on there to add them. My bad dude!

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Haha it’s cool no worries, @Tarzan idk Facebook doesn’t have to be reloaded, and you don’t have people just talkin trash for no reason or Internet gangsters

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

And Slam Online is dope but it has it’s flaws.
I can’t tell you how many times I typed up a long, gem of a comment and hit submit only to have it never showed up.
Or how many times someone commented as me.
Or how many times I accidentally posted as someone else.

    Sup guys I’m not Enigmatic.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

    ^^ that too

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

There are some crazies on here, just ignore them….. And I HATE it when I type up a long post and it never appears. So, I can kinda understand. …. Its funny you already deleted nbk. …….

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

If I had like, ten people I knew exclusively from Slam Online as FB friends it wouldn’t be so wierd. But just one is.
Plus nbk’s profile pic scares me a little. Just kidding…sort of.
And I’m guessing the 6:41 PM comment was Grizzly-the-bear. Cause of the troy blog link.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

    Hahaha

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Spurs/ Lakers is really good right now. I didn’t realize how well Odom was ballin this year.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

Kobe and George Hill is entertaining, the Kobe I’ve seen this season will either shoot LA or SA out of the game

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Spurs have.no fear of lobe or the lakers. But if la would force the ball inside with the twin towers they would kill the spurs. I wonder why phil is opposed to playing lamar at the three.with gasol and.bynumbfor.some minutes. Steve blake is getting.destroyed by Parker like he is back in denver. I lo e the spurs offense just beautiful basketball. So is the lakers when lobe isn’t chucking.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

    Kobe is chucking though

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

Kobe is chucking. I can’t tell whether the Lakeshow are going through their usual seasonal struggles, or if they are not the same team as the last two years.

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

I have a bunch of FB friends from this website.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Lakers are bad. Real bad, michael jackson.
Seriously though they are getting smashed even when they play hard these days. Because they played hard against.miami and the spurs.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Lakers are finished. So sad……LMAO!

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

I didn’t watch tonights game(Ricky Gervais show Marathon), but nobody showed up to play the Heat the other day.

  • http://www.twitter.com/AllBall247 AllBall247

LOL @ Eboy. I wouldn’t go that far, but they are not where they would want to be right now. Spurs/Mavs look good in the West. Tonights loss to Raptors was just complete lack of effort.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Lol yeah it was me Enigmatic. Good catch. I was going to come clean later tonight, hope you aren’t mad. Haha, happy holidays btw.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also, I’m not the one who keeps posting under Eboy, etc. That’s not me, fyi.

  • http://Slamonline.com Nbk

As I’ve been sayin though, George Hill is top 5 defensive guards in the league

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

Man, Lakers aren’t even a top-5 team anymore. What happened? Fisher, Kobe, and Artest have all lost a step and Barnes/Blake are too uncomfortable in the triangle to play major minutes.
But they shouldn’t be THIS bad.
Any Lakeshow fans want to keep talking about how the Spurs aren’t for real?

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

ALSO not to rub it in, but anyone want to apologize to me when I said that the Heat were better off running with a 1-2-3 instead of two off guards and a forward? Anyone?

  • http://Www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Nah Teddy I’m not mad at all. Hope you and yours are doing well this holiday season.
Oh and hopefully you’re not the guy who posts as JTaylor21 and keeps asking other commenters out on dates. LOL just playing dude.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

i said a long time ago the lakers are slow. manu played great but didnt shoot well. tony was amazing, jefferson, blair and hill were good. if the spurs would have hit just a couple more of those open shots throughout the game, it would have been a blowout the whole way. lobe(word to allenp) got his cookies took MANY times tonight, he should be embarassed. spurs played great defense.. tim duncan was said to have been spotted lightly jogging one lap before taking a nap.,,,
