Blake Griffin Doesn’t Mind Angering Opponents

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

NBA players are large, prideful men. No one likes to get shown up, especially not in front of 20,000 people, and certainly not by some rookie.

Unfortunately for the poor souls who must contend with Blake Griffin on a nightly basis, getting publicly humiliated by a rookie is something you just have to accept.

Griffin lit up the Indiana Pacers for a season-high 47 points and ripped down 14 boards yesterday. There are no statistics for punking defenders, but needless to say, no one on the Pacers’ roster was smiling or particularly happy with Blake following the game. The young man understands the salty feelings, but he doesn’t care (no should he.)

FanHouse has the quotes:

James Posey took the baton from Lamar Odom, who had sparked a physical round of do-si-do and four ejections on Sunday after taking exception to Griffin’s fight-to-the-finish exuberance. Posey was assigned to guard Griffin late, then grew frustrated when his presence had no positive effect.

The two players had one tense exchange in the third quarter, when Posey appeared to get hit by a Griffin body part and showed his disapproval by puffing his chest and circling Griffin before he went to the line. By the time Griffin had closed strong in the win, and Posey nor any other Pacers players could do anything to stop him, the animosity remained after the buzzer sounded.

Griffin walked some 15 feet out of his way to offer Posey a conciliatory fist-pound, only to see the 13-year veteran shrug him off and walk the other way. Griffin smirked, then stared at the back of Posey’s jersey as they went their separate ways. “Yeah, I’ve got a thing for rubbing people the wrong way I guess,” Griffin said. “I didn’t think we got into it. I know he came in to guard me, so I don’t know. Sometimes you’re frustrated after games like that. Maybe next time he’ll give me a high-five.”

Veteran NBA defenders are going to learn sooner or later to get over their petty beefs with Blake Griffin. It’s not like they can challenge him physically.

No Country for Old Men and all that.

I like the dude and I like his attitude but somewhere, sompeplace, some dude’s going to take him out and I hope for his sake it won’t come with a major injury. I’m looking at those Boston cats if Blake tries that with them.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

I love it. Great last line. If everyone hates playing against you then everybody will want to play with you.

  • diego

white man can jump i guess

Blake will shredder the Boston bigs. Kg will be foolish to try and stop him. Maybe slow him down but won’t be able to stop him. At this time of the season, Griffin took over the PF spot and no one is better. we’re still talking about a rook righttt

  • KB8toSG8

I hope for his sake Blake doesn’t try this kind of ish vs Boston.

  • http://slamonline.com riggs

why would james posey (or even the pacers coach) think that he could stop blake griffin? has he not seen sportscenter’s top 10 every night dude plays?

he is actually half white half black dude

  • http://twitter.com/smileyoufckers Bryan

Doesn’t try what? Try to score when he has the ball? If opponents don’t like it, stop him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

It’s funny cause everyone wants a player who plays hard til the buzzer sounds. Yet all these veterans are complaining about him playing hard.
Didn’t SLAMonline recently have a post showing that Blake ran out of gas in the 4th quarter? I guess he was just trying to prove SLAM wrong =P

  • 1982

@Eboy, I was thinking the the exact same thing. One vet pulls a Karl Malone and he’s out for a few weeks…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

If dude stands face to face with Shaq, if they were to have a confrontation of some sort, (’cause I’m pretty certain Shaq ain’t taking a dunking from the dude), I’ll say he ain’t afraid of yapping with anyone.

  • Jer-Dawg

Already waiting for next Clippers game. Fans happy to have THIS great season by far. Clipper fans never had anything to cheer about for a long while. Living in the NOW with Blake Griffin and LA Clippers because judging Sterling’s f’ed up ways never will this season be better again.

  • Jer-Dawg

Oh yeah, I hope Blake eventually goes to Lakers. They’ll treat him like the superstar he is. Clippers history says he won’t succeed so i want him to leave Clippers. Don’t sign that extension when it’s time, Blake! Go across that hallway! Where’s the PE Nikes already for this guy?!? It’s only because he’s a Clipper. Smh

  • rich

his playstyle is so unique. he gets the ball at the top key like bosh, attacks like amare, finishes like duncan, withh handles like only blake griffin can. if he was 6 ’2 hes stilll be in the league

  • diego

he is more white than me

  • westeves

(side note) i was drinking some milk the other day and saw Blake Griffins brother on the side of the milk carton….. What’s up with that? lol…

  • http://slamonline.com riggs

he’s more black than you also

It’s all fun and games until somebody gets clotheslined.

cause his mom is a red head…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Griff has a habit of banging into people full speed from behind and throwing elbows. Lots of cats don’t like that. If you were playing pickup, you wouldn’t like it. That doesn’t mean he should stop, but people are going to continue to get pissed.

  • http://slamonline.com THE REAL RIGGS

Odom cant punch his way out of a wet paper bag. man please.

  • C.B

@diego not that it matters, but he’s father is actually black lol xD..again doesn’t matter just thought its funny

  • robb

Players may hate him but basketball fans definitely love him. Überbeast

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Blake is not doing anything outside the parameters of clean play.

    Physical? Of course.
Relentless in a game where guys “coast?” Definitely.
Dirty or potentially hazardous? No way.

C’mon, guys like Charles Oakley have to laugh at this kind of stuff. It’s also kind of funny, because this was never mentioned in college and Blake played the same way back then.

  • snasty10

i dont know why a few of you are saying he shouldnt try this ish on boston. I cant wait till he sh**s kg and big baby. F*** the celtics

  • http://www.double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Funny thing about this is no one would be talking about Posey for any other reason. That’s the real reason why he’s salty.

  • onlyclipsfanonslam

lot of Laker fans being haters. Give us something damnit!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Griffin doesn’t do anything wrong, he competes hard, he’s def not a dirty player and he’s pretty much dominating everyone, so don’t get mad because you’re not Blake griffin, just appreciate talent, BTW Shaw wouldn’t do anything to Blake, he said to his son that he can only watch kobe, lebron and blake, ’cause Blake’s next and Shaq knows it, he respects him.

  • R. Deahn

James Posey is bum juice. Keep banging on them fools Blake.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

so is there any chance he doesn’t make the all-star squad this year?

  • robb

@snasty10 man, I can’t wait til Blake takes a dump all over pig baby

  • benno

can u black people just let us whites have one person who can dunk, you’ve got loads of people who can dunk, just let us have him!!!!

  • fruizm

i dont care where lamar is from…..ill put my money on blake any day!!

  • Jetstar7

When a dude goes hard in constant Beast Mode, there’s simply no time to apologise. Beast Mode Blake, anyone?

thats right the men is white, and you see him and he has nothing of black, red hair snowing white skin

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

practically the exact situation with Dwight Howard

  • zoom

I hope Blake damn near rams the ball down KG’s throat when they play the Celtics. If vets have a problem with him playing hard for 48, then that says more about them than Blake. Even Kobe couldn’t co-sign Odom’s b*tching…BTW, Blake is half white half black. So what if his skin is light and his hair is red? It doesn’t change what he is genius. Hell my brother is light skin with red/brown hair; it doesn’t make his race different from mine.

  • http://bulls.com airs

LA Blakers are nothing without professor griff. and it looks like we need another racial draft. but we will not let the black people take back the wu-tang clan, you can keep tiger.

I love this. No more of this stuff that’s been going on lately with everybody being friends and eventually playing on the same team.

I want rivalries. I want Magic vs Bird. I want Wilt vs Russell. I want Jordan vs …everyone. Hell yes, Blake. Piss people off, start rivalries, and know that they are just pissed because they can’t beat you on the court. Being hated and being great seems synonymous.

  • izzo

Posey should be angry at whoever told him to defend Griffin

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

I enjoy watchn blake as much as anyone else, but he does do a lil extra. .. Hitting lamar in the back when the game is over, and just running into people from behind. Its close to dirty. One day, hes gonna do it to the wrong person(zbo?) who will check him. The thing with lamar was totally blakes fault. Its a nice corny lil grade school thing to say to play til the buzzer, but the game was well over.

  • MikeC.

I enjoy the tenacity. When the Clips play the Celtics, maybe KG will give Blake a little talk about how to get under the skin of other players while still be universally praised for hard work and intensity. Except Blake takes it to big dudes too.

  • http://www.double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

@beno, um Blake is black and white. How do you think he has his hops? Peep his back story before you post dumb sh@#. Tommy Griffin. Look it up.

  • youngmuggsy

Come on Tarzan, Blake tripped on Shannon Brown’s foot and stumbled into Odom, it wasn’t intentional.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

    I’m with izzo.

  • T-Money

i would LOVE for kg to try his antics on blake and have blake dunk all over him and look him straight in eye with a blank stare while chewing his mouth piece. boston dudes are just loud, not that agressive and they certainly don’t throw down. except shaq, you can say whatever you want to say about his declining skills but nobody’s trying to get on shaq’s bad side. ever.

  • bnets

The only player that shut down that Ginger is the Net`s Kris Humphries when the Nets beat them in LA

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

Right now Blakes playing more like leauge MVP than ROY.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

KG was yapping at all of Orlando’s bigs last night. He didn’t appear to be afraid of them.

  • http://slamonline.com THE REAL RIGGS

loved how this turned into a KG bashfest, it seems when one doesnt win a ring its intensity but as soon as he gets one he becomes a douchebag. good to know.

Blake doesn’t mind angering opponents and that’s good. Do ya thing BG

I do think Blake is a little extra. Not dirty, just extra. and extra bow here, and extra shove there. I mean Andre Miller, who is the most even keeled, mild mannered dude I’ve seen in the L, ran full court to ram BG in the back, that wasn’t because Blake was playing too hard, he took exception to something. Howard is the same way, he’s always flailing those arms around after the play, it gets to you after a while.

  • bravo

  • KH10

It was actually a close game last night it’s not like they were up 30 and he was playing hard, the clips needed all of those buckets and the pacers were too dumb to send a double team, quit whining

  • barnabusb

I love Blake Griffin and I’d love to see someone foolish enough to try to mix it up with him. Griffin is a stone cold killer, man. Dwight Howard needs to learn a thing or two from Blake’s intensity and drive.

  • Omar

    Cosign Izzo.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

dfrance21 – The moment Andre Miller took a running torpedo charge to an unsuspecting Blake griffin, he no longer became a member of the “even keeled, mild mannered” NBA team…

  • DeeDre

How long before this guy starts entering legit MVP discussions? im not saying that he is but the way the Clippers have been playing of late they have a good chance of getting the 8th playoff spot in the West. Maybe the 7th if Carmelo gets traded soon.

  • QuinnTheEskimo

I dunno..after watching Blake destroy both Miami and LAL, i gotta say I love this kid. He may well be my fav player in the whole league right now. And for the record he is black..

    yea Blake is Haitian/White.

But yo can we at least safely say that he is an all star…..

  • http://www.5linx.net/teamsvp Jesse Dunns Ghost

Griffin approached Posey after the game to shake hands. The Pacers forward spurned his attempt.

“He tried to, I declined,” Posey said. “He already gave us 40 something and I’m going to shake his hand and thank him? I’m good.”

    Too funny!

  • http://www.5linx.net/teamsvp Jesse Dunns Ghost

  • Hubert

    @bravo, I beg to disagree.

  • JC

I don’t mind Blake angering opponents either, I love it! Old dudes complaining that the young guns play to hard, no country for old men indeed….

  • Justin

cosign T-Money. No way is KG going to start talking smack to Blake Griffin. KG only does that if you’re 6’7″ or smaller and no threat to physically put him on his ass with his savage dunks. AllenP, I saw KG doing a lot of talk but it wasn’t to anyone in particular. It wasn’t like he was looking someone in the eye and saying it. Not to the bigs anyway. Shaq can talk all he wants but it won’t stop Blake from just doing what he does. As for “someone’s going to take him out” line…uhhh…who? Dwight? Doubtful. He’s too busy staggering backwards looking for the charge. Amare will be getting out of the way because we all know, unless it’s from the blindside, he’s not going to do much to stop him.

  • rayray

blake griffin is samoan – definitely samoan just like my homie james johnson

  • el_larsen

    the incredible griff

  • PapaBearATL

These old players looking like Larry Holmes flabby and sick, lol! You play the game to win, if you ain’t trying to compete to that final buzzer then check yourself, not the dude running through, around and over you. Dad’s black, mom’s white. Historically 1 drop of Negro blood makes you…

  • kelseytiny32

why does it matter which race he is? he is a beast that kills anybody in his way, that’s all there is to it. don’t matter if he black, white, yellow, purple, blue, or green. so y’all just appreciate him alright.

  • Tav

I think the word “proud” is what you’re looking for, not prideful. Stupid Americans.
