Clippers GM: Blake Griffin Will Never Leave

Because of his team’s miserable history, most hoops fans — Clips supporters exempted — would like to see Blake Griffin in another situation soon, but according to the Clippers’ front-office, he ain’t going anywhere. Ever. ESPN has the quotes: “It’s impossible to predict where Blake Griffin will be in the summer of 2014, when he will become an unrestricted free agent. But as far as the Los Angeles Clippers are concerned, he’s not going anywhere. ‘I can guarantee you he will only ever be a Clipper,’ general manager Neil Olshey said of his prized rookie. ‘If [Oklahoma City Thunder general manager] Sam Presti arrived on Kevin Durant’s doorstep at midnight on July 1st with an extension, understand that Blake Griffin lives two blocks away from me in Manhattan Beach so it’s going to be a much shorter commute for me … When it comes time for him to be a free agent, we won’t be losing,’ Olshey said. ‘We’re not losing now. We’re 10 out of 14 now with our All-Star center [Chris Kaman] sitting around in a suit. The future looks pretty good. The only question will be, in two or three years with Blake, is how much more we’ll be winning.’”

No one stays a Clipper forever, pretty sure its illegal

  • irondan21

Dan Gilbert is smirking somewhere and saying, “Ya, that’s what we that too.”

  • Flight

    @Max haha nice.

  • Kent Kanada

I think he is just giving Griff the praise he deserves by saying that his business (the Clips) considers him the top asset and wants to keep him around for as long as he can. If you have someone like him…wouldn’t you want to put all your eggs in one basket? I mean if you dont, then you chances of keeping him forever aren’t going to get any better.

  • MUBWAR

So many NBA franchises for this type of player. Wiz take on Wall, clips get a savior in Griffin and my raptors gave a 1st overall to Banana. Oops i mean Bargnani. What a waste.

  • http://www.laumol.nl/weblog Laumol

Come on. Griffin is too good to stay with the Closers… euh, Clippers (my bad)

  • First & Foremost

LOL… Stay a Clipper or take less money for a legit chance to win a championship?

  • fitzy

    lol @ irondan

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

He’s gonna stay in LA but he’s not gonna stay a clipper. Lakers or Clippers? I wonder which would he choose. BTW…Lakers have like no one one the books in the summer of 2014 as of now.

  • max

@kent, no you don’t put all your eggs in one basket, that’s what cleveland did and look at them. Saying that blake will be a clipper forever means nothing, they have to surround him with talent, make moves, draft smart, otherwise its going to be blake with scrubs vs the nba.

  • Jer-Dawg

Good PR move by outright stating that, bad people doesn’t deserve great things, DONALD STERLING, and it’s the CLIPPERS! never will Griffin move units in a crap team with crap ownership. Clippers were lucky that Elton Brand didn’t re-sign.
Sterling lucked out again. Griffin comes to LA; lucked out again.
I hope trashing Baron Davis helped, Sterling. Now, you’ve lucked out again by having an awesome floor general out there directing the show at precision pace. Let’s go, players on LA Clippers! Go beat the Trailblazers tonight on TnT and show that Clipper ownership that you are good and deserve better. Fans deserve better, too. F ownership!

  • Kokane

As long as Donald Sterling is there no prized player will remain with the Clips

  • MikeC.

Clipper contracts = blown out knees.

  • Clipperfan

LAKERS FANS ARE IDIOTS! He will not be a Laker in 2014! When was the last time the Lakers had enough money under the Salary cap to sign a max player? Whenever the Lakers get expiring contracts they’ll flip them for a better player, ex; Kwame for Gasol. Look at the teams that had max-player money this past summer. Do you ever see the lakers giving up on a season and giving away players for expiring contracts?!?! Keep in mind they are 44 mil OVER the cap right not and the new CBA wont help.

@Clipperfan…that’s how the Lakers signed Shaq. They were under the salary cap. All their contracts except for Steve Blake’s come off the books during the summer of 2014 or before.

  • Clipperfan

@Kap……They weren’t this good before they got Shaq. They’ve been competing for championships the past few years and will continue to do so. Competing for championships means spending $$$. Don’t think Kobe will be too happy with the Lakers just staying the same just so the lakers can sign his replacement in 2014. Guarantee this team doesn’t look the same in 2014

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Blake will not be going anywhere, Clippers will compete in the near future for a top six record in the West. If Clippers are winning, Blake is staying.

  • http://www.redraidersports.com Nicolas Fleming

How can i put this GINGERly…? Ahem, the CLippers couldn’t even keep The Staples Center.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

Well, since the next CBA threatens to be less lucrative for players, (if he manages to avoid the Clipper curse) I can see him going home to team up with Durant challenge what would likely be a weakening Miami Dynasty.

  • flipnoyce

In 2014 Boston will have enough money to sign Blake and two more allstar after the Big Three retires. Plus Rondo would still be the floor general with a better jump shots, I hope. Just stating the possibilities! green and white is a better color for you!!!

  • http://www.adrianbondmemphis.blogspot.com Adrian Bond

Griffin is a Bona Fide Allstar, and I got to see him play a NCAA Tournament Regional Gm in Memphis while he was in college at Oklahoma, and jumped so high coming from the baseline that he hit his head. I knew he was going to be special at that point and he hasn’t disappointed yet!

The Clippers- where max contracts DOES NOT happen

  • Towelie

Why are teh Clippers still in LA!?!?!

  • http://www.sonicbids.com doyouwantmore

LOL @ our ‘all-star’ center Chris Kaman. This is right up there ‘manna from heaven’ Darko Milicic. Kaman’s good, but he’s not that good.

The SLAMonline forums – where opinionated fans make worthless predictions…

For some reason I am always surprised at the idiocy of some NBA management. Whats wrong with being rational, Neil Olshey?
Blake is obviously one of the best players in the league right now, and his ceiling is as yet undefined. Of course you want him to stay a Clipper, but “I can guarantee you he will only ever be a Clipper” is kind of disrespecting to BG, seeing as the decision on where to go is his and all.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Wishful thinking!

  • Joe

Blake will be in Boston…its just the perfect story, All of those Celtics contracts are expiring in 2 years, KG, Shaq, Ray, JO, Delonte, Nate,…Future Era of the C’s, with Rondo and Blake Griffin!

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Can we please not start counting the days until free agency 2014?

  • andre anglais

    amen Michael NZ

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

In 2014 he will sign as a free agent to replace the just-retired Tim Duncan.
Nah, I have no idea, and as long as he’s in the NBA and unless the Bulls have a chance at him, I don’t really care where Blake Griffin goes. Or stays.

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

@doyouwantmore: Kaman was an All-Star last season.

  • flipnoyce

As a superstar only Kobe, Pierce and Dirk has played under only one organization in their own respective team for more than a decade. SO, the chance of Blake leaving the Clippers is already more than 50%.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    ^ Tim Duncan?

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

I think I’d rather read about potential MeloDrama trade scenarios.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Glad to see Blake getting so much love, seems no one has a single bad thing to say about him, this won’t last forever, every celeb (actor, athlete, musician, etc.) eventually will have its haters. Maybe Blake’s will come once the Clips are no longer the “underdogs”.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Eric gordon is up first. Will sterling fork over the cash for eg??

  • Justin

@Michael NZ…no kidding about counting down free agency 3 years from now. Enigmatic, was thinking the same thing about Tim Duncan. Not much of a glaring oversight there huh? lol It would be good for the league if Griffin, or any of these superstars stayed in one place and didn’t go title hunting, *cough* Lebron *cough*. Ahhh, how I miss the days when players tried to win titles with their teams and if they lost, busted their a$$es in the summer time to get better.
